11/16: Daily Dribble

November 16th, 2006

Marchello Vealy.. not a dish at your local Italian joint, but a player who just walked into Lawrence, KS and busted the Jayhawks with an improbably 7 threes. The Oral Roberts sophomore had hit just two threes in his 31 previous career games. For Kansas, the effort was reminiscent of a Bill Self NCAA Tournament loss, but at least this one came early in the season. Kentucky struggled in their first game of the season last night.. escaping with a 57-46 win over Miami OH. Kentucky held Miami to just 31% shooting, and a crazy low 19% in the second half.. but like last year Tubby's boys just struggled to hit a shot.

Nevada gets no respect nationally.. but the 23rd ranked Wolfpack put a spanking on a weak Oregon State team last night. Nick Fazekas, a potential All-American, had 19 and 18 boards in the 28 point win. Nevada has a relatively easy non-conference schedule and should be able to pile on the wins this season. Gonzaga's win last night over Baylor sets up what should be a fun battle with North Carolina out in Madison Sqaure Garden. There's something about college basketball in the Garden which gets me excited.

Besides Kansas, last night's other flagrant performances of the night: Aaron Bruce shooting 0 for 12 in the loss to Gonzaga and Stanford getting absolutely rocked, at home, by Air Force 79-45. Air Force is a probable NCAA Tournament team while Stanford was expected to lose.. but Pac-10 teams aren't supposed to lose by 34 at home. Oh wait, so did Oregon State last night. Maybe its time we give leagues like WAC and the MWC some respect. Yes, I always choose the namebrand Crest toothbrushes too.. but sometimes the unknown generics simply do a better job.
