PetroSun Independence Bowl preview

December 30th, 2007

PetroSun Independence Bowl (Shreveport, LA)
Alabama (6-6) vs. Colorado (6-6)

Two 6-6 clubs will meet in the Independence Bowl, and they show up in difference moods. Colorado closed out the regular season with a blowout of Nebraska in a game that essentially had a berth in this game on the line. Alabama, on the other hand, lost again to rival Auburn, their sixth straight defeat in that series. Interesting thing about the Crimson Tide is that they ran Mike Shula out of town for going 6-6 and playing in this same bowl last season...only to hire Nick Saban and end up 6-6...and back in Shreveport.

Alabama brings one of the better running backs in the SEC to the table in Terry Grant, and wide receivers DJ Hall and Keith Brown are capable targets for John Parker Wilson. But the young Buffaloes have the ability to put points on the board, led by QB Cody Hawkins and RB Hugh Charles. The trend for this season has been as Charles goes, so go the Buffs. And head coach Dan Hawkins could have a few wrinkles in his back pocket to spring on the Tide at any given time. If Colorado's defense can limit Grant's yardage, they can put the game on the shoulders of Wilson, and that has had mixed results this season. But I like Bama's defense to carry the day, getting the win tonight.

Who am I kidding? Most people will be watching the Titans/Colts game at the same time.
