BubbleBoard: Michigan Rises, Minnesota Sinks
RPI #'s updated as of 3/08/09, 1:10 pm.
The BubbleBoard is a new feature on CHN that ranks at-large contenders using a variety of standard resume components. The core of the ranking is the RPI, and like the RPI, the better you are, the lower your total score is. Bonus points are awarded for Top 50 success (particularly) & Road/Neutral wins. Further bonuses are awarded for playing challenging schedules, and to a lesser extent, challenging schedules in non-conference play.
The key reason the BubbleBoard exists is to expose teams that have performed extremely poorly in Top 50 games and games away from home. Ultimately, you want tourney teams capable of competing with the best away from home.
Interesting changes since previous update on 3/06
- Note that the latest update does not include any Sunday games beginning 2pm or later.
- I made a slight tweek in the formula today. Teams with a lot of Top 50 wins, but with sub-.500 records in those games were being overrated a bit too much.
- Texas A&M moves closer to lock status, while Dayton & Creighton actually improve due to former opponents moving into the Top 50.
- BYU is a virtual lock at this point along with Butler.
- Big losers include Oklahoma St (loss to OU not a huge deal, but earlier wins losing value), Minnesota (loss to UM), Cincy (devastating home loss to SHU), and Rhode Island.
Faker teams: Florida, George Mason, Maryland, Miami, Oklahoma St, Providence, San Diego St, South Carolina, Siena, Temple, UAB, USC
Dangerous teams: Boston College, Butler, BYU, Dayton, Northwestern, Penn St
- Auburn, Illinois St, and Northwestern added to BubbleBoard for the first time.
