The first week of March is always one of college basketball's best seven-day stretches. There is the end of the regular season in many conferences, including all the major conferences, and plenty of conference tournament action. Furthermore, five bids were handed out for the NCAA Tournament. With a week that jam-packed, there is bound to be an abundance of top-notch performances from around the country. Of course, this week certainly fit that bill.
PITTSBURGH - Duquesne senior guard Aaron Jackson (Hartford, Conn./Worcester (Mass.) Academy) earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors for a school record fourth time this season and freshman guard Eric Evans (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for the fourth time following wins at La Salle and at Massachusetts this past week.
IRVING, Texas - Guards Sherron Collins (Kansas), James Anderson (Oklahoma State) and Willie Warren (Oklahoma) have been chosen as the latest Phillips 66 Big 12 Players and Rookie of the Week for Feb. 16 - 22 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is the second player accolade this year for both Collins and Anderson. Warren has been the top rookie seven times in 2008-09.
CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Sherron Collins, Kansas, G, Jr., 5-11, 200, Chicago, Ill./Crane
Brandon Ewing - Wyoming
2 Game Averages: 25.5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 52% FG, 61.5% 3P
Ewing has been one of the top performers in the Mountain West Conference all season long and this week was a prime example of what he can do. The 22 points on Saturday at San Diego State were nice, but the Cowboys came up short in that contest. Wednesday night though was a surprise upset of UNLV with the senior dropping 29 points on 8-16 shooting, including 5-8 from beyond the arc.
Three league teams still have a shot at the league's regular-season title. UNI (12-3), Creighton (11-4), and Illinois State (10-5) are the only schools mathematically alive for a regular-season crown and No. 1 tournament seed. Notes on the leaders ....
