Final Four: Player & Position Ranking

April 3rd, 2009
Ty LawsonThis is a straight-forward list: a ranking of the remaining Final Four players. Most of the teams go about 8 deep now, so the top 8 from each squad is included. Only 3 others players (2 on MSU and 1 on UNC) get meaningful minutes beyond the top 8. Below, the players are ranked by position.

A couple things to note: Look how weak these teams are at small forward, and mostly at power forward as well. On the flip side, look how great all 4 of these teams are at point guard and at center (especially if I swapped Hansbrough as a center in place of Thompson).

2009 Final FourThe Final Four gets started Saturday evening with the home-state favorite #5 (overall) Michigan St (30-6, 15-3) facing the champions of the West Regional, #2 Connecticut (31-4, 15-3).

Season Rewind: The Big Ten regular season champions, Michigan St had a relatively poor start to the season, taking big losses to both Maryland and UNC, and while it was clearly the conference's top team, fell by double-digits to Ohio St. in the Big Ten tourney semifinals.

2009 Final Four

Most of the talk heading into Sunday’s Midwest Regional Final centered on the hot Louisville Cardinals and their chance to give the Big East three teams in the Final Four.

Turns out someone forgot to tell Louisville that their work wasn’t done with that 103-64 beating of Arizona on Friday night.

GameNight: Louisville vs Michigan St

Mar 29 2009 - 2:20pm

Louisville dominated Arizona like the Wildcats were a D2 team. But Michigan St is a much more sound team, that will try and control the pace and defend with purpose. In Louisville's 5 losses, the game was played at a slow place and the Cards never topped 64 points (51, 54, 55, 57, and 64). That's pretty much the recipe for Michigan St, control the pace, make Louisville beat you in the half-court, and hope for the best.

Everybody fears losing their Elite Eight or Final Four team by the second round (did anyone besides me have Syracuse going to the Final Four in the 2005 tourney?).  However, when an early upset is picked correctly, you can have a serious advantage over the rest of your competition.  Let’s take a look at a few teams that could be packing their bags early on.
