College Basketball's Best Coaches
Ah, the old floor general; the point guard. He is the player responsible for standing at the helm of his team and guiding them as an offensive catalyst, while also serving as the first line of defense on the other end of the floor. Is it any wonder then that seven of the last nine national champions have seen their point guard drafted in June? Probably not.
Point guards are the quarterbacks of their respective teams. This comparison is often said because of the similarities and responsibilities that lie within each position in their respective sports. Besides a solid quarterback, the five best backcourts in the country also have depth, experience, and athleticism. Watch for these five teams to make deep runs this year because of their great backcourt play:
CollegeHoops.net's Preseason All-Freshman Team is led by a pair of unanimous selections: UCLA's Jrue Holiday and Ohio State's BJ Mullens. Holiday, a West Coast point guard and Mullens, a Mid-West big man come from the opposite ends of the college basketball spectrum.
PAC-10 FIVE-YEAR STANDINGS
This ranking tries to answer a simple question: Who has been the best team in the Pac-10 over the last five years?
It’s the same old story in the Pac-10 this season. UCLA should once again dominate the conference and a boatload of departed talent is being replaced with a boatload of new talent.
North Carolina senior Tyler Hansbrough, CHN's reigning Player of the Year, is the dominating force leading CollegeHoops.net's 2008-09 Preseason All-America Teams. Besides Hansbrough, other returning CHN All-Americans include Luke Harangody (2nd Team last year), Darren Collison (3rd Team), Stephen Curry (4th Team), and AJ Price (4th Team).
Unlike the NBA, where most starting lineups are set in stone weeks before the
season, NCAA starting fives are highly unsettled and constantly in flux. Going
through the BCS leagues this week, I'll be projecting the starting fives for
each team. Also included is the team's most important bench option, and some
notes on other possible lineups.
