It’s no secret that Jodie Meeks has been having a breakout year. Kentucky’s junior shooting guard was averaging 24. 2 points per game entering Tuesday night’s showdown against SEC favorite Tennessee, and was fifth in the country in scoring. With a number of long, rangy, athletic wingmen, the Vols figured to give Meeks some trouble in getting his shot off.

A rare Sunday morning version of the ever popular 20 Random Thoughts & Observations by CollegeHoops.net editor Shawn Siegel.
1 - Villanova's failed attempt to score from close range at the buzzer had to remind you of Charles Smith's Epic Fail with the Knicks. (1993 Playoffs, Knicks vs Bulls, Game 5. Still hilarious.)

"You've got to be kidding me!!"
That was my, along with probably thousands of other UK fans, reaction to Edgar Sosa's 25-foot 3-pointer with two seconds left that secured the Cardinals win over UK on Sunday. Of all people, it was the hot-and-cold Sosa that buried the Cats in Freedom Hall, yet another frustrating big-game loss for Billy Gillispie and the Cats this year.

2009 is finally here, and that means the rush and stress of the holidays are finally over.. which means there’s no better time to grab a comfortable chair and take in some hoops. The first weekend of the year offers some great match-ups, and it’s time to start separating the contenders from the pretenders as conference play is getting geared up. Happy New Year! The first day of 2009 offers up some intriguing matchups on the gridiron, but given the recent phenomena of spreading out bowl games over an entire month New Year's Day can seem a bit barren to some. Bragging rights for conferences are on the line as well, most notably in a couple of matchups between the Big Ten and SEC along with a traditional showdown in Pasadena. The league/team with the most to lose: Virginia Tech, champions of the ACC.

I was going to start this column with some kind of witty, creative statement...something along the lines of Jodie Meeks certainly isn't meek, or Meeks is making opponents weak... something like that.
But to get too wordy or creative might have taken away from what the main focus is...namely that Jodie Meeks is pretty freakin' good.
