Greivis Vasquez: NBA Draft Profile

February 3rd, 2009

Greivis Vasquez

College: Maryland

Class: Junior

Position: PG/SG

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 190lbs

Accolades: Second Team All-ACC (08), Honorable Mention ACC All-Freshman (07), Venezuelan National Team.

Scouting Report: A versatile, stat-stuffing guard.

Strengths: Very good ball handler. Good at pushing the pace. Versatile - can play spots one through three. Great height/length for the point guard spot. Can slash to the hoop with either hand. Good at moving without the ball. Very creative passer. Very intense/passionate player. Good defensive potential - gets lots of steals. Fantastic free throw shooter. Great rebounder for a guard. Has three-point range. Experienced - three seasons of big minutes in the ACC. Good leader & floor general.

Weaknesses: Very thin - needs to get stronger. Not a big-time athlete. Questionable shot selection. Risky player - takes too many chances - doesn’t always make the smart decision. Lets emotions get the better of him sometimes. Turnover prone. Shoots for a poor %. Needs to improve his consistency in knocking down threes. Hasn't really improved over the years.

Projected 2009 Draft Range: Late first round to mid second round pick.

Consensus: Greivis Vasquez might not have the NBA potential that his high school teammate, Kevin Durant, possessed coming out of college, but he does have a very intriguing game. If he can cut down on the playground/YMCA plays he makes, bulks up a bit and works on his outside shot, he could find himself long term employment in the League.
