James Gist: NBA Draft Profile

June 8th, 2008

James Gist

College:  Maryland

Class:  Senior

Position:  PF

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 235lbs

Accolades:  Second Team All-ACC (08), ACC All-Defensive Team (08), Honorable Mention All-ACC (07).

Scouting Report:  A big-time athlete who would be great on a run-and-gun NBA squad.

Strengths:  Tough defender.  Huge wingspan – 7’4”.  Big-time athlete.  Can really run the floor.  Great at finishing on fast breaks.  Very good shot blocker.  Finishes strong and above the rim.  Can knock down the occasional three.  Experienced – played four years in the ACC.  Capable of big scoring games – had 30-plus points twice this season, and 20-plus nine times.  Decent rebounder.

Weaknesses:  Size – measured in at 6’7” without shoes at pre-draft camp – will be undersized for the post in the NBA.  Doesn’t really possess good enough wing skills to slide over to the small forward spot.  Foul prone.  Needs to keep improving post moves and face up jumper.  Turns the ball over too much for a post player.

Projected 2008 Draft Range:  Mid to late second round pick.

Consensus:  Gist’s athleticism and length will get him into the NBA, and if he ends up on a fast break oriented team he could become a solid contributor.
