Canisius Canít Pass First Road Test

With some strong games at home, but with only one win in four games to show for it, Canisius hit the road on Saturday for the first time.  Their opponent, Eastern Michigan from the Mid-Atlantic Conference, would not be an easy team to beat, as the Eagles were picked by some to finish near the top of the MAC.  The Golden Griffins entered the game on a three-game losing streak, falling to conference rival Niagara, 81-80, a week earlier.

However, the Griffs did little to help their cause, losing 86-72 to the 5-1 Eagles to drop to 1-4 on the season.  One reason that Canisius came up empty was the number of turnovers they gave up.  Sixteen of the Eaglesí points came off of the Griffsí 22 turnovers; certainly less miscues on offense could have helped the Griffsí cause.  However, there were some positives in this game.  Sophomore Chuck Harris had a career-high 15 points; Kevin Downey also pitched in 15.  Freshman Marcus Vanderheide had another strong game, scoring 12 points, a career-high for him.  The Griffs did shoot a solid 46.7 percent from the field but could only manage 50 percent (8-16) from the free-throw line.

Leading all scorers was the Eaglesí Markus Austin with 25 points, while Danny McElhinny pitched in with 20 points.

It doesnít any easier for Canisius as they take on another MAC opponent in Buffalo (5-2).  The Bulls are coming off a double-overtime victory over Niagara and will visit the Griffs at the Koessler Athletic Center on the 18th.  The game will be part of a doubleheader that sees the UB women take on the Canisius women at 6:30, with the menís game set for 8:45.  After that, Canisius heads to the MSG Holiday Festival to take on Big East member St. Johnís on the 28th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
