NCAA Tournament BubbleBoard: March 2nd
Updated as of 3/02/09, 12:10 pm.
The BubbleBoard is a new feature on CHN that ranks at-large contenders using a variety of standard resume components. The core of the ranking is the RPI, and like the RPI, the better you are, the lower your total score is. Bonus points are awarded for Top 50 success (particularly) & Road/Neutral wins. Further bonuses are awarded for playing challenging schedules, and to a lesser extent, challenging schedules in non-conference play.
The key reason the BubbleBoard exists is to expose teams that have performed extremely poorly in Top 50 games and games away from home. Ultimately, you want tourney teams capable of competing with the best away from home.
Interesting changes since previous update on 2/25
- Tennessee (becoming a lock) & Illinois St (little chance) were removed from the list. Instead, probable at-large teams Dayton & Ohio State were added.
- BYU jumps substantially thanks to a good win over the weekend, and a good win by SDSU which gives the Cougars back those top 50 wins.
- Other gainers include Oklahoma St, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and Rhode Island
- Rhode Island was the weekend's big winner, as they jumped from last on the list to firmly in the bubble mix.
- Temple and USC had easily the worst weeks, while Davidson drops merely due to RPI/SOS calculations
Faker teams include: George Mason, San Diego St, South Carolina, Siena, Temple, UAB. (Temple replaces Oklahoma St.)
Dangerous teams include: Arizona, BYU, Kentucky, Ohio St, UNLV (BYU & Ohio State added. BC removed)
