Dartmouth Wins First Game

HARRISONBURG, Va. Junior Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) scored 14 of his game-high 16 points during the second half as Dartmouth held on to beat James Madison, 74-70, in men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.

Ball was a perfect six-of-six from the floor for the game and converted on three of four free throws during the final 1:19 of play as the visiting Big Green earned its first victory of the season, coming out of Dartmouth's final exam break.

JMU fell to 2-6 for the season with the loss in its final game before semester examinations.

Dartmouth shot 62.5 percent both overall (15-24) and from three-point range (5-8) while taking a 36-23 lead during the first half, and the Big Green finished with a 57.4 percent shooting effort from the field for the game.
Dartmouth scored its final 11 points from the foul line, connecting on 11 of 14 free throws, after JMU pulled to within 63-58 on sophomore guard Colbey Santos' follow shot with 1:19 remaining.

JMU was called for an intentional foul on the in-bounds play following Santos' field goal, and Ball hit both free throws for a 65-58 Dartmouth lead. He drained another free throw with 1:02 to play for 66-58 Big Green lead, and Dartmouth survived a three-point play from JMU freshman guard Pierre Curtis and a three-point field goal from Santos during the final 30 seconds.

A Santos layup got JMU to within 70-65 with 20.7 seconds left, but Dartmouth's Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) connected on two free throws at the 19.5 mark and the Big Green's Michael Giovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored a pair with 7.2 seconds to play following Santos' three-pointer at the nine-second mark. Junior forward Terrance Carter's layup for JMU at the closing horn provided the game's final points.

In addition to Ball, Dartmouth had two other players in double figures. In his first action of the year since suffering an ankle sprain, senior Leon Pattman (Memphis, Tenn.) had 15 points off the bench. Barnett had the Big Green's first double-double since March 3, 2006 when he pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with 13 points.

Now 1-6 on the year, the Big Green is home for the next two games, hosting Stony Brook on Thursday, December 14 at 7 pm and Quinnipiac on Monday, December 18.

Kansas Spanks Dartmouth by 51

LAWRENCE, KAN. – Sophomore DeVon Mosley tied a game-high 13 points, but couldn’t lead the Big Green men’s basketball team past the number five team in the nation, Kansas Jayhawks, as the Dartmouth squad fell 83-32.

The Big Green struggled out of the gates, being held to 13 points in the first half for the second game in a row. Kansas, coming off a thrilling win over then ranked No. 1 Florida, stormed through the Big Green off the tip.

Nine Kansas players scored in the first half, giving the Jayhawks a 40-13 lead going into the break. Leading the way for the crimson and blue was Brandon Rush who went into the lockerroom with nine points and three rebounds.

A rejuvenated Big Green team came out of the halftime talk armed for a comeback, but again the Jayhawks brought it strong to the undermanned Dartmouth team.

Mosley shined for the Big Green putting up 13 points and grabbing four rebounds, as well as having three steals.

Mosley’s 13 points tied the game high with two Kansas players. Both Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson provided 13 for the Jayhawks who ran away with the contest in the second half beating the Big Green, 83-32.

With the loss the Big Green remain winless in their first six games, while the Jayhawks improve to 6-1 on their season.

Dartmouth won’t tip off again until Dec. 9, when they travel to James Madison for another non-conference game.

What are your team’s goals for this season?

A:
First, to be competitive in the Ivy League on a nightly basis. We have two
returning seniors, and some underclassmen who are working very hard, so we hope
to be in the upper echelon.

2.
What are your team’s expectations for this season?

A:
There is no numerical measure for our expectations.

3.
What facet of the game is most important to your team’s success this season?

A: The
two keys will be rebounding and defense.

4. Who do you think will be your
team’s
most improved player this season?

A: There are a host of guys:
Brian McMillan should be vastly improved, and Johnathan Ball, Leon Pattman, and
Michael Giovacchini have all been steady.

5. Which non-conference
opponent do you think will be your biggest challenge this year?

A: After going 6-21 last year,
they are all challenging.

6. Which of your 4 incoming
freshmen (Elgin Fitzgerald, Kurt Graeber, Robbie Pride, and Brandon Ware) do you
expect to make the biggest impact this season?

A: It’s too early to tell.

7. In light of the success of
Ivy players from other countries, do you think it is crucial to specifically
recruit foreign-born players, or do you just want to get the guys who can best
help your team win?

A: Foreign guys are difficult
for us to get, but we do a good job recruiting in our respective areas.

8. Do you consider this season
to be the usual two-team race between Penn and Princeton, or do you think
another team can win the conference title this season?

A: I think the league from top
to bottom will be as competitive as it has been the last 2-3 years. It might
sound crazy, but I truly believe that any team can win the Ivy title.

9. How do you think the losses
of Mike Lang (All-Ivy 2nd-team) and Calvin Arnold will affect your
team?

A: They were both senior
captains who did a good job and brought a lot to the table. Arnold’s
shot-blocking will be missed a lot, and Lang was one of the best 3-point
shooters in the league.

10. What did your team get out
of the preseason trip to Costa Rica?

A: It was an opportunity for a
young team to have some practice in advance, spend time with each other away
from campus, tweak our offense/defense, and get some foreign competition.

11. What was your reaction to
the shooting of the Duquesne basketball players, and how do you try to keep your
own players safe when off the court?

A: We are all vulnerable to any
situation at any time: nobody is exempt. I talk to my players about what they
do in their spare time, where they go, who they go with, etc., and tell them to
use their best judgment. Coaches are like parents for these kids when they are
away from home, and we worry about them when they are out of our sight, because
they are our responsibility.

12. Who do you consider to be
the favorite for Ivy Player of the Year?

A: Ibby Jaaber of Penn
