Daily Bracketology

I'm going to be projecting the Tournament field on a close to daily basis for the rest of the year (and no Saturday's since there's little action Friday). This is a field based on how the tourney looks as of this moment. Note that for one-bid leagues, I simply include the conference leader at the time of publishing. In case of ties, I use my projected winner.

Arrows indicate team that moved up or down based on last night's performance.

Note on Monday's Movement: Despite a lot of upsets and wild games yesterday, there were actually not that many big changes in today's field. Tennessee moves up to a 1 seed due to UCLA's loss, where some suggest they should have been anyways due to their gaudy RPI. Clemson remains a 7 seed despite the loss to UNC, while Arizona dropped from a 7 down to the 1st 8 seed. No doubt others will have Arizona slightly higher due to their high RPI. In the A10, UMASS & Saint Joseph's both lost close games, but still manage to hang in the field. UMASS though drops to the last team in, while Arizona State moves into the first team out position after beating Arizona.

Georgia Tech's Dickey Taking Red-Shirt

ATLANTA - Ra'Sean Dickey, a senior center for Georgia Tech's men's basketball team, has decided to red-shirt the 2007-08 season.

The 6-10, 250-pound Dickey, who has missed the first eight games of the season due to academic ineligibility, also has been forced to miss considerable practice time because of acute tendonitis in his right knee and is not yet able to play.

"Ra'Sean is just not healthy, he's experiencing severe tendonitis in one knee and also has problems in his other knee from a past injury," said head coach Paul Hewitt. "It is in his best interest at this point to get healthy, and he is assured of graduating in the spring of 2009 if he continues on his current schedule academically.

"He has missed several practices in the fall and had to pull out of a practice as early as Sunday because of his knee problems. So we've decided it is in his best interest to red-shirt."

Dickey, from Clio, S.C., has averaged 8.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in his three seasons at Tech, and has made 60.1 percent of his field goals. He averaged 5.1 points as a freshman, 13.2 as a sophomore, and 8.1 last year.

"I've decided that it's best for me to stay on my present course, concentrate on my academics and do everything I can to get healthy so, hopefully, I can play another season and get my degree," said Dickey, who majors in Management.

Georgia Tech has nearly all the pieces in place for an NCAA Tournament run. There is plenty of talent, plenty of experience and plenty of scorers. However, they are missing the one key thing that every team needs…a quality point guard. When Javaris Crittenton opted to go to the NBA, the Yellow Jackets went from the NCAA to the NIT according to many prognosticators and unless one of the new point guards can step up, the NIT is where the team is headed.

Who’s Out:

Crittenton was no experienced point guard, but he was very good. His only year at GT he averaged 14.4 points and 5.8 assists and he certainly got the job done. The 21^st overall pick in the NBA Draft, Crittenton will be missed, but it is not just his departure that has Georgia Tech on a one year downward spiral. The early departure of Thaddeus Young is not quite as big of a deal thanks to the depth of the frontcourt, but Young averaged 14.4 points and 4.9 rebounds last season and had plenty of room to improve and become a great forward in the ACC. Mario West provided some depth to the backcourt and little used Paco Diaw has opted to transfer.

Who’s In:

Calling all point guards. Walk-on Matt Causey has the experience after spending some time at Georgetown and North Georgia, but it is Maurice Miller who has more talent. Causey, now a senior, is a decent shooter, but Coach Paul Hewitt just needs somebody who will get the ball to the scorers in a safe manner. Miller may be that guy. He is not a great scorer at this point in his career, but he is a good passer and was a solid floor leader at the high school level. Neither of these point guards are Crittenton and they will likely share minutes until one can separate himself from the other. Shooting guard Lance Storrs has a nice looking shot. He can drain a ton of three balls when he is on and once he uses his 6-4, 212 pound body to get to the basket more, Storrs will be a good player. The big new name in the frontcourt is Gani Lawal. The 6-8 forward is a great athlete who will do a little bit of everything. Once Lawal adds some strength, the McDonald’s All-American will be very difficult to stop. Redshirt freshman Brad Sheehan has plenty of potential of his own. He is a solid rebounder and the 6-11 center will spend most of his time in the paint.

Who to Watch:

The frontcourt has potential with Jeremis Smith, Ra’Sean Dickey, Zach Peacock, Mouhammad Faye and Alade Aminu returning. The tough hard-nosed Smith led the team with 5.9 rebounds per game last season. He is also the most prolific scoring option among the group of forwards. Dickey would likely be starting beside Smith, but he is ineligible for the first semester. Dickey can find an open shot even in a crowded area around the basket and may be starting once he is eligible. That is, of course, unless Zach Peacock does not want to give up his starting position. Peacock is not a banger under the basket like Dickey, but his offensive versatility could prove to be a valuable asset. No matter how it all shakes out, players like Peacock will see important minutes while Dickey is out and that can only help the overall depth down the stretch of the season. Lanky small forward Faye and rebounding threat Aminu will be benefactors of Dickey’s absence as well and both will get the opportunity to prove they deserve more minutes.

Final Projection:

If Lewis Clinch was not back, Georgia Tech would be nowhere near the bubble. Clinch only played in 14 games last year before running into academic issues and that really hurt the offense. Clinch is a terrific shooter and shot nearly 48 percent from beyond the arc in those 14 games. He will use his athleticism to get to the basket as well and will be the team’s best scorer this year. Yet, Anthony Morrow will not be too far behind. Morrow, who averaged 9.9 points per game last year, can hang with Clinch in a three-point shooting contest. D’Andre Bell is the only other returning guard. Depth is not a major concern though since the versatility of the forwards allow for many of them to see significant minutes on the wing. Obviously the point guard issue is the big question mark. If Causey or Miller can simply run the team without causing too many problems, Georgia Tech will be alright. However, It is asking a lot of a freshman not named Crittenton or a walk-on to lead a team through the ACC.

Georgia Tech's Dickey Ineligible for Fall Semester

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech center Ra’Sean Dickey has been ruled academically ineligible to compete in basketball in the fall semester, head coach Paul Hewitt announced Saturday.

“Ra’Sean realizes he has fallen short on his academic responsibilities and knows he has work to do in the fall in order to play,” said Hewitt.

The 6-9 senior from Clio, S.C., who started 23 games last year, was Tech’s fourth-leading scorer (8.1 points per game) and second leading rebounder (5.3 per game), while tying for the team lead in field goal percentage (59.6 pct.).

Unsubstantiated Speculation: Today's NBA Draft Rumors

With all the excitement of a lead-in to Jeopardy! the NBA Draft Lottery takes place tonight. It is always a glorious event. Where else can we watch the usually cocksure (and by “cocksure” I mean oblivious) NBA executives sweat through their suits and smile nervously while clutching some sort of lucky charm — like a lion’s tooth or gypsy tears or something — knowing that some stupid Ping Pong balls could savage their respective careers. Only in the NBA could this become not only a relevant event, but a weirdly entertaining one, even if only a few teams actually have a shot at No. 1 and the top prospects are usually guys like Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi and Andrew Bogut.

Luckily Greg Oden and Kevin Durant add a nice little twist to this year’s lottery with the teams landing in the top 2 instantly rejuvenated and teams on the outside planning for relocation.

Most importantly, the lottery marks the start of Draft prep, which comes at a perfect time given the plodding slop that is the Conference Finals (I’m way more interested in Oden vs. Durant than Spurs vs. Pistons). So as part of CHN’s NBA Draft coverage I’ll sift through the wide expanse of the Internet and try to stay up to date with all the latest ~~unsubstantiated speculation~~ buzz. And if that’s not enough, I’ll throw in my two cents as well.

· It’s really no joke that the jobs of some NBA executives are on the line as David Aldridge writes of Sixers GM Billy King (I’m a big Sixers fan which is why this leads off the list). King has been hopelessly inept in most of his roster moves (with the exception of 2000, a year he actually made very few moves), but he’s been decent in the Draft (Iguodala, Korver in the 2nd round). If they can’t get a PF like Brandan Wright, Al Horford or Joakim Noah, the next choice should be PGs Conley or Law. That would be the logical move at least. But the pressure is as high as ever on King and I smell desperation (which smells a lot like Spencer Hawes by the way). He could take a flier on someone realizing it’s make or break time for the Sixers, who have three first-round picks and only one top 50 NBA player. Good thing us Philly fans are so accepting.

· Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune “broke” what some would consider “news” yesterday writing that Greg Oden would like to play with Mike Conley, his high school and college teammate. First of all, no s**t. That’s like me saying I’d like my next relationship to be with Jessica Alba. The problem is it’s not going to happen. The only team with a chance at landing the two without a trade is Atlanta. If they can land the No. 1 they should also have Indiana’s pick at 11. It’s a long-shot but so is any scenario that makes the Hawks relevant again.

· Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer says in this excellent column the lottery is another example of the problems in the NBA today. He makes a great point: The NBA has tinkered with the lottery like they have dozens of other aspects of the game to the point where the competitiveness of the league has been compromised.

· Speaking of the Hawks, Sekou Smith of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution gives the fans — whether they asked for it or not — a look at their hapless yet resilient GM Billy Knight. The Hawks could have any number of results of lottery night but the No. 11 pick appears to be a sure thing (the Pacers have it top 10 protected). I fully anticipate they will promise that selection to Nick Fazekas.

· Mark Bradley, also of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, takes an interesting look at the lottery’s implications on Georgia Tech and its coach Paul Hewitt. Javaris Crittenton and Thaddeus Young both are in the draft but without agents. While the lottery won’t really affect those two — they are projected to be mid first-rounders — the Draft’s affect on college coaches must be difficult at times. Whether players withdraw or not probably doesn’t affect recruiting, but it certainly affects the playing time of incoming recruits and current players. It’s interesting stuff and yet, it seems the story goes mostly untold. Hewitt probably has more uncertainty regarding the draft than any other coach in the country. John Thompson III probably knows his guys are gone and Mark Fox could lose his backcourt, but not players like Crittenton and Young.

· In what could be considered either very creative or the bastard child of a slow news day, Kent Youngblood of the Minneapolis Star Tribune asks some experts in probability to asses the Wolves lottery chances. He enlists a psychic named Moonrabbit to foresee the Wolves future. Here’s a snippet: “The stars indicate a major disappointment. I'm afraid there is no immediate change in store for them.” If only Moonrabbit was Kevin Garnett’s agent…

· Down in Memphis, where they have the best odds at No. 1 but no head coach and will soon have no GM, they know it only takes one player to turn around a franchise. Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan and Lebron James are all perfect examples lottery-induced turnarounds. Pau Gasol was nowhere to be found on the list.

· The winner for most delusional, contrived lottery interest goes to this writer in Oklahoma City who is actually rooting for Seattle to win the lottery because they are a possible relocation destination for the Sonics.

· The increasingly more fantastic AOL Sports Blog site has The Big Lead’s list of who will be most doomed by any lottery injustice. They have Atlanta on top but I’ve got to think it’s Boston. The Red Sox should take the city’s mind off the tanking travesty that is the Celtics, but with the way they intentionally mangled the end of their season and the fact they renewed Doc Rivers contract, not getting Oden or Durant could be the final disappointment for those in Boston who care about basketball. The Sporting News decided to further torture the city with its recent cover featuring Tim Duncan in a Celtics jersey, an ode to the last time Boston tanked and were failed by the Ping Pong balls (you can see the cover on the right side). Rick Pitino is still bitter about it in this piece by Steve Bulpett of The Boston Herald.

· Sean Deveney of The Sporting News needles Boston some more in his decent, but excessively long piece, on the pitfalls of coming up short in the lottery.

· In Denver, although they have no first-round picks, Marc Spears thinks this draft has the look of the 2003 Draft that featured Lebron, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. I see the similarity but this draft seems more top-heavy than that one. Looking past Oden and Durant, I’d be shocked if this draft produced players with the caliber of those in 2003. Chris Bosh, Kirk Hinrich, Chris Kaman, TJ Ford, David West, Leandro Barbosa, Boris Diaw, Kyle Korver and Mickeal Pietrus all came out of that draft as well.

· If they don’t get one of the top two picks, I really think Seattle could enter the season as the worst team in the NBA. They have no coach or GM right now, they will probably lose Rashard Lewis to free agency, Ray Allen has to be dying to leave and the city can barely support a team. It’s gotten so bad that they are pleading with David Stern to fix the lottery for them, just to save the franchise. That’s asking a lot. I mean, you need to play in a much bigger market than Seattle to have the lottery rigged for you. They have an 8.8 percent chance of winning though, with some optimists in the rainy city noting Toronto’s similar position last year. Could be the Starbucks talking.

For a more realistic look, here’s an outstanding column by Ted Miller of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who says the Sonics have put the fate of their franchise in the Ping Pong balls.

Since it seems everyone will be happy with either of the top two picks, here are the odds each team will land there:

Memphis: 46.5 percent

Boston: 38.7 percent

Milwaukee: 31.3 percent

Atlanta: 24.5 percent

Seattle: 18.5 percent

Portland: 11.3 percent

Minnesota: 11.3 percent

Charlotte: 4.1 percent

Chicago (via New York): 4.1 percent

Sacramento: 3.9 percent

Indiana: 1.7 percent

· Jay Bilas thinks Greg Oden is dreamy for what it’s worth. But more interestingly, the ESPN draft analyst tells the Charlotte Observer Mike Conley won’t make it to the Bobcats probable pick at No. 8 but Corey Brewer, Julian Wright or Jeff Green will be available. Interesting quandary for Bobcats fans: Do you get excited about the prospect of selecting one of those three players or do you take any NBA-related analysis by Jay Bilas for what it’s worth and embrace reality? Hmmm…

· Apparently Bucks GM Larry Harris already has made his mind up on the Oden-Durant debate. Speaking of Harris, if anyone remembers back to the 2005 lottery, you know that the Bucks won the No. 1 pick and Harris was shaking and stuttering during the ESPN interview like he had just won American Idol or something. And I guess it’s alright to be excited, but do you really want to see your team’s GM completely breaking down because he won a draft lottery? I mean, they got Andrew Bogut . Let’s say Kevin McHale calls this offseason and offers Kevin Garnett for Charlie Villanueva and Mo Williams. If Harris starts panting and trembling, don’t you think that would be a dealbreaker? I think that sums up the state of the NBA GM pretty well. They are so insecure about their jobs that if some Ping Pong balls fall their way, they are helplessly overcome with excitement. Anyways, it says in this notebook that Harris is going to be back in Jersey tonight and he vows to not act like a schoolgirl that just got asked to prom.

· The winner for most thick-headed denial of your franchise’s impending doom (a highly competitive award, by the way) goes, once again, to Isiah Thomas who says he’s happy with Eddy Curry and isn’t too interested in the results of tonight’s lottery.

The One and Done Club: Freshmen in the 2007 NBA Draft

Any serious discussions concerning the 2007 NBA draft must begin with talk of the fabulous freshman class entered in it. In all, eight NCAA freshmen have thrown their hats into the ring for this year's draft, which is not an overwhelming number. However, the talent level of some of these frosh is what sets this year's draft class apart.

A freshman entering the NBA draft isn't a totally new phenomenon. Two of the best "one and done" club members both were top five picks in the historic 2003 draft - Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony and Georgia Tech's Chris Bosh. The next year Duke's Luol Deng surprisingly bolted Coach K's clan and the Chicago Bull's are better off for it, as Deng has blossomed into one of the League's best young talents. However, buyer beware - for every CB4 or Melo there also lurks as many Kris Humphries or Rodney Whites - both freshman lottery pick busts.

Which brings us back to this draft. The historic significance of this year's draft is that there are far more potential studs than potential duds. At the head of the stud list is the projected top three picks in the draft - Ohio State's Greg Oden, Texas' Kevin Durant and North Carolina's Brandan Wright. Oden has been the projected #1 pick in the NBA draft since he was an underclassman in high school and he didn't disappoint in an injury-marred freshman campaign with the Buckeyes. He is a once in a decade prospect and the best big man to enter the draft since Tim Duncan entered the NBA, fittingly, a decade ago. The fact that Durant is even making some NBA scouts consider drafting him ahead of Oden shows what type of talent the young Longhorn possesses. Carolina's Wright is a high enough level of prospect that in many other draft years he would be given serious consideration by the team holding the #1 pick.

A level below the big three are another group of freshmen projected as potential lottery picks. Washington's Spencer Hawes is a gifted big man that just needs to add some strength and experience. Oden's buddy Mike Conley Jr. had a breakout year for Ohio State and is mature beyond his years. While both of these players could benefit from some more seasoning in college, they are good bets to be very solid pros down the road.

The jury is still out on the last three freshmen draft prospects. Georgia Tech's Javaris Crittenton surprised many people with his strong play this past year and is considered a good guard prospect. On the other hand, teammate Thaddeus Young had a disappointing year and his draft stock is riding on his considerable "upside". Another Buckeye, Daequan Cook, had an up and down year on a stacked Ohio State roster. All three could use at least another year in school, but of the three Crittenton appears to be the most ready.

If you were to construct a Mount Rushmore of the all-time best freshmen draftees, you'd probably have Georgia Tech's Stephon Marbury at the point, St. Louis' Larry Hughes at the two spot, and Deng, Anthony & Bosh up front. It is no stretch to predict that within a decade this squad will look very different. The NBA's age limit rules will make freshmen draft prospects all the rage, similar to the effect high schoolers have had on the League over the past two decades. Clear some space Carmelo, the One and Done Club is bound to get a little more crowded in the coming years.

Height: 6”8”

Weight: 217lbs

Accolades: McDonald’s All-American – high school (06), Second Team Parade All-American – high school (06), Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year – high school (06), Tennessee Class AA Mr. Basketball – high school (05), Second Team All-American – Street & Smiths – high school (05).

Scouting Report: A physically gifted inside/outside threat.

Strengths: Tremendous “upside”. Very athletic. Good size for the small forward spot. Can score off the dribble – utilizes floaters. Very long – has a 7-foot wingspan. Has three-point range on his jumper. An explosive scorer – topped the 20-point mark six times his freshman year. Can post up smaller men or take advantage of larger defenders out on the perimeter.

Weaknesses: Very inconsistent – 30 points one game, eight points the next. Still very young – will only turn 19 right around the time of the draft. Questionable shot selection at times. Should be a better rebounder due to his size and athleticism. Could use his length better on the defensive end – doesn’t block shots.

Projected 2007 Draft Range: Mid first round pick (2007 or 2008).

Consensus: Young is still far from realizing his vast potential and a solid, yet unspectacular, freshman season seems to have hurt his draft stock a bit. The physical tools are there to make Young a special NBA player – his game just needs some more seasoning before he is an impact player in the pros.
