Wake Forest Basketball Schedule: 2008-09

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's 29-game regular season schedule was released by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The schedule is highlighted by 15 home games at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a Thanksgiving trip to the Anaheim Classic and nine appearances on the ESPN/ABC family of networks.

The Demon Deacons, who will be led by second-year head coach Dino Gaudio, will face 11 teams that participated in postseason play in 2007-08, including seven that made the NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest will appear on television 21 times, including 13 national telecasts on the ESPN/ABC family of networks (nine times) or on Fox Sports Net (four times).

The Deacons will get their share of national television exposure when they compete in the 2008 Anaheim Classic, held Nov. 27-30 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. ESPN is the host for the tournament, and all three of Wake's games will be televised on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Wake Forest opens the season with three straight non-conference home games, beginning with North Carolina Central on Nov. 14. The Deacs will also play host to in-state rival UNC Wilmington on Nov. 19 and city-rival Winston-Salem State on Nov. 24.

From there, it is off to the West Coast for the Deacons where they will open the Anaheim Classic against 2008 NCAA Tournament team Cal State Fullerton. The Titans earned a surprise berth to the Big Dance last season by winning the Big West Conference Tournament.

Wake will either play St. Mary's, another 2008 NCAA Tournament team, or UTEP in the second round of the Anaheim Classic. The Deacs will face Arizona State, Baylor, Charlotte or Providence in the third round of the tournament. Baylor made the 2008 NCAA Tournament field, while Arizona State and Charlotte participated in the NIT.

The Deacs will return home to open the month of December by hosting Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3. Wake Forest is 7-1 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which includes a 2003 defeat of the Hoosiers in Winston-Salem.

Wake will then host Bucknell on Dec. 6 and Wright State on Dec. 14. The game with Wright State is set to be televised on Fox Sports Net.

The Deacons will hit the road for their first true away game on Dec. 19 at Richmond. Wake will then play at in-state rival East Carolina on Dec. 22 before returning home to host Radford on Dec. 30.

Wake is set to ring in the New Year with a tough road test at Brigham Young on Jan. 3 in Provo, Utah. The game will be played at the Marriott Center, where the Cougars have won 47 straight contests. If BYU is able to keep the home winning streak intact heading into its matchup with Wake Forest, a 58-game streak will be on the line. It will be Wake's first-ever trip to BYU and just the second such trip by an ACC school (NC State in 2004).

With its 13-game non-conference schedule wrapped up, Wake Forest will open ACC play on Jan. 11 by hosting defending ACC champion North Carolina.

In its 16-game conference schedule, Wake Forest will play five opponents twice in home-and-home series. Those opponents include Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech and NC State.

The Deacons will travel to Boston College (Jan. 14) and Clemson (Jan. 17) before hosting Virginia Tech (Jan. 21) and Duke (Jan. 28) to finish up the month of January.

February sees the Deacs traveling to 2008 NCAA Tournament team Miami on Feb. 4 and then hosting Boston College in a return trip on Feb. 8. Wake will then play at NC State (Feb. 11) and host Florida State (Feb. 14) and Georgia Tech (Feb. 18).

Wake Forest visits Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. for the first time since 2007 on Feb. 22. NC State comes to town for a Feb. 26 matchup to wrap up the month of February.

The Deacons will play at Maryland on March 3 before hosting Clemson on March 8 to finish the regular season.

The 2009 ACC Tournament is set for March 12-15 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. It will mark the first time since 2001 that the conference tournament has been held in Atlanta.

Like civilizations, all great basketball programs eventually fall.. replaced by an upstart newcomer. In this week's Rise & Fall series, we'll take a look at which BCS programs are rising, falling, or merely treading water.

ACC

BOSTON COLLEGE - STATUS QUO
Expect more out of the same from the Eagles in coming seasons.. a step forward here and there followed by another step back. Al Skinner is a good enough coach to keep the program from bottoming out, so they should hover in the 15-20 win range for awhile.

CLEMSON - RISING (slowly)
Amazingly, the Tigers RPI has risen every year since 2001. From that low of 168th to 19th this past season. Another gain isn't likely in 08-09, but its hard to imagine that Oliver Purnell and Co. will break through the Top 10 in the neat future. Mays and Hammonds are gone, and KC Rivers just has one moe season left. Still, give Purnell credit for quieting the doubters and getting Clemson back on the rise.

DUKE - STATUS QUO
If anything, it seems like the Devils are slightly on the downwards turn, as they peaked at #1 in the RPI in both '04 and '06. Still, this year's group has top 5 potential and I see no reason why Coach K won't keep loading up on 5-Star prospects in the near future.

FLORIDA STATE - STATUS QUO
Hope and promise. Two things that FSU has had a lot of recent seasons, but they continually manage to avoid the one thing that matters: success. Once again, big time recruits like Chris Singleton join the fray, but another 17-20 win season is likely.

GEORGIA TECH - STATUS QUO
The Jackets have been a middling team for the past two seasons, and change is unlikely this time around. Iman Shumpert was a nice catch for Paul Hewitt, and he should be a major contributor for the next few seasons.

MARYLAND - DECLINING (slowly)
Last year was the 3rd time in 4 seasons that the Terps finished below the top 40 RPI.. disappointing numbers from a program that was once right there with Duke and UNC. Outside of Vasquez, there's not too much to get excited about this year, and its not like there's any monster reenforcements waiting in the wings. The only thing stopping Maryland from a fast decline is that Gary Williams usually manages to get the most out of his team.. he's just not brining in the talent like he used to.

MIAMI - RISING (slowly)
With the exception of Anthony King, most of last year's important contributors return from a 23-win team. Though that total was kind of flukey considering how weak the program had been in recent seasons, more important is the new arena and the signing of DeQuan Jones. More Top 25-50 signings like Jones are needed if Miami wants to seriously solidify its claim as an ACC contender.

NORTH CAROLINA - RISING (quickly)
Simply put, UNC is blowing up into the nation's premier program. Forget last year's #1 RPI ranking, the huge amount of returning talent, and another solid incoming class.. the future could be even brighter. The 2009 recruiting crop of Henson, Strickland, et al is sick, while Roy Williams has already locked up two of 2010's Top 20 prospects.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE - STATUS QUO
Last year at this time, many thought NC State was in the same hyperspeed improvement mode as Wake Forest. But JJ Hickson bolted after a season, Gavin Grant graduated, and Costner and McCauley's production split in half. Suddenly, another last place (or close to it) finish seems likely.

VIRGINIA - DECLINING (slowly)
The Cavaliers have had about one legit Top 25 team in the last decade.. so their current mediocrity isn't terribly surprising. But managing only 5 ACC wins despite a consistent 20 ppg from Sean Singletary was definitely a downer. All hope isn't lost as Dave Leitao has some emerging talents like Jones, Landesberg, and Brandenburg to work with.. but in the ACC, those names are merely par for the course.

VIRGINIA TECH - RISING (slowly)
While the Hokies weren't amazing last year and only project to be in the 30-40 range this year, that's still a major improvement from a team that was one of the worst in major conference basketball just a few years back. Seth Greenburg is proving to be one the best coaches in the league, not necessarily in terms of recruiting (though Jeff Allen was a big deal), but in terms of mastering a system that works.

WAKE FOREST - RISING (quickly)
Perhaps the country's fastest rising program, Wake Forest is on the verge of reaching heights beyond the grasp of Tim Duncan's lengthy arms. Last year's
average 7-9 ACC squad was full of freshman and sophomores, and would have been in line to win 9 or 10 league games even without new enforcements. The addition of three stud prospects though, including the future pro Al-Farouq Aminu, could push the Deacons into the basketball stratosphere.

Wake Forest's Jamie Skeen Suspended for Fall Semester

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest men’s basketball player Jamie Skeen will not be with the Demon Deacon team during the fall semester, as announced by head coach Dino Gaudio on Tuesday. Skeen has been suspended by the University due to a violation of academic policy.

“Jamie is an outstanding young man with much to contribute to Wake Forest, both on the basketball court and to the University,” said Gaudio. “However, sometimes good people make poor decisions, and that is what happened here. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience for the young man that will help him grow as a person.”

Skeen, who recently completed his sophomore season at Wake Forest, is a two-year letterwinner for the Deacons. In 2007-08, the forward from Charlotte saw action in 29 games with six starts. Skeen averaged 5.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Turnarounds: 31 Teams to Watch For in 08-09: Part One

With the off-season now upon us and the spring signing period well under way, this is a good opportunity to attempt to forecast some of the teams who could make the jump next season. Is there a team out there like this past season’s Drake Bulldogs, who went from ninth place to a dominating run through the Missouri Valley? Or how about Arizona State, a team that went from dead last in the Pac-10 to fifth place and could have the makings of a conference title run this season? With one pick for each conference, here are 31 teams you should keep an eye on next season.

America East: Maine

2007-08 Record: 7-23 (3-13)

With their top three scorers from last season all returning (as tri-captains no less), I think the Black Bears have a chance to make a move up the America East standings. Mark Socoby, mid-season transfer Kaimondre Owes and Junior Bernal will lead the way for head coach Ted Woodward next season, giving Maine a three-pronged attack on the perimeter. Their ascension up the standings will depend on what they can get from the frontcourt, most notably Phil Tchekane Bofia and Sean McNally. I’d say a move to the middle of the pack at least from Maine, but a title? Maybe a little premature on that, but you never know.

ACC: Wake Forest

2007-08 Record: 17-13 (7-9)

Not like this pick is a surprise, but the combination of a highly-touted recruiting class led by Al-Farouq Aminu and returnees such as Ish Smith, James Johnson and Chas McFarland could mean a top-four finish in the ACC for Dino Gaudio’s Demon Deacons. They weren’t too far off this season either, with five of their nine league losses being by seven points or less. And given the muddled picture that was the middle of the ACC standings last season, snatching a first-round bye in the 2009 ACC Tournament certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Atlantic Sun: Campbell

2007-08 Record: 10-20 (5-11)

Even with two of their top four scorers out of eligibility (Reggie Bishop and Jake Wohlfeil), the Camels have a good shot at improving their 5-11 league record. Only provisional members USC Upstate and North Florida were below them in the standings (Upstate actually had five wins as well), and Florida Gulf Coast had one more conference win. But they do return forward Jonathan Rodriguez, who averaged twenty points per game on his way to snatching up Mid-Major All-America honors from CollegeHoops.net and CollegeInsider.com. And with the solid recruiting class being brought in by head coach Robbie Laing, Campbell should have the tools necessary to make a move in the A-Sun.

Atlantic 10: George Washington

2007-08 Record: 9-17 (5-11)

I don’t think there’s any way the Colonials can be as bad as they were in 2007-08. From an Atlantic 10 Tournament title to not even reaching the conference tournament, GW couldn’t continue the momentum. Even with three players gone (Maureece Rice to graduation; Cheyenne Moore and Miles Beatty were dismissed on Wednesday by head coach Karl Hobbs) from last year’s team, the Colonials could make a move up the standings with many of the teams ahead of them going through roster turnover as well. Whether or not they get to the middle of the A-10 pecking order will depend on who becomes their go-to guy on the offensive end of the floor. But they should be a balanced group, which may work out just as well for the Colonials.

Big East: Providence

2007-08 Record: 15-16 (6-12)

Another season of underachievement led to the departure of longtime head coach Tim Welsh, who was replaced by National Coach of the Year Keno Davis last month. Just as important a development for the Friars may be the return of guard Sharaud Curry, who was a medical redshirt last season. As seen with Drake last season, Coach Davis puts a high value on perimeter players who can shoot the ball from the perimeter. Guard Dwain Williams has received permission to talk to other schools, but even with his loss the Friars should be well-stocked on the outside with the likes of Curry, Weyenmi Efejuku, Brian McKenzie and Jeff Xavier.

And don’t forget about jack-of-all-trades Geoff McDermott and pivot Randall Hanke. The hype for this team won’t reach what it was a couple seasons ago, when a team featuring Ryan Gomes thought to be a player in the Big East didn’t even reach .500, but they will be good. The question is just how far they can go in a loaded Big East.

Big Sky: Eastern Washington

2007-08 Record: 11-19 (6-10)

Last season was indeed a tough one for the Eagle program. Head coach Kirk Earlywine didn’t get the job until late June, and under his command was a nine-man roster featuring six players with no previous Division I playing experience. While they didn’t qualify for the Big Sky Tournament in 2007-08, six of their ten conference losses were by five points or less. Granted, replacing an all-conference player like Kellen Williams will have an effect, the four transfers who sat out last season along with the returning experience should make for a better season in Cheney, Washington.

Big South: Charleston Southern

2007-08 Record: 10-20 (4-10)

With the return of rising sophomores Omar Carter (Big South Freshman of the Year) and Jamarco Warren (member of the Big South’s All-Freshman Team), the Buccaneers should be a good bet to improve their last place finish of a year ago. Guard Chris Moore has graduated, but he’s the only loss of note for head coach Barclay Radebaugh, who has also signed a solid recruiting class. Guard Jaden Isler (Clovis, NM) could fit right into the guard slot left open by Moore’s departure, and the other three commits are no slouches either. Competing for the conference title may be a year away, but some of the teams who finished ahead of them in the standings last season have taken on some key losses due to graduation.

Big Ten: Illinois

2007-08 Record: 16-19 (5-13)

Once Eric Gordon decided to head to Indiana instead of Illinois, things went downhill for Bruce Weber’s Fighting Illini. With the cornerstone of last year’s recruiting class gone, Illinois scuffled on the offensive end of the floor, but the fight was still there as this group was a mere forty minutes away from an NCAA Tournament berth. Shaun Pruitt and Brian Randle are both out of eligibility, but every other key contributor from last season is slated to return, along with three newcomers. Stan Simpson was a standout performer at Chicago Simeon, and Coach Weber also received a commitment from Top-20 junior college talent Dominique Keller. After the first semester, Kentucky transfer Alex Legion will also be eligible. I don’t see this team losing thirteen conference games again this season.

Friday Report Card: Butler Locks Up the Horizon

A - Luke Harangody

I don't care that ND lost to Louisville last night.. or that Harangody isn't the best looking guy out there.. or that the Irish haven't won any huge road games. The simple fact of the matter is that Harangody has to be the Big East Player of the Year. His 40 point, 12 rebound effort last night was just one in a string of amazing performances this season. His averages of 21 ppg and 10.6 rpg are impressive enough, but when you consider that he barely played against ND's early season opponents and is only averaging 28.9 mpg.. then his numbers are that much more impressive. For a quick example, Donte Greene averages 17 ppg, but in 35 mpg.. good for .48 points per minute. Harangody averages .726 points per minutes.. meaning Harangody is 50% more productive.

B - Butler

Congrats to Butler for locking up another Horizon League title. Except for a rough stretch in 04 & 05, the Bulldogs always hover around the 20 win mark and always contend for a conference title. Making it more fun is that they manage to do it despite a revolving door of coaches. Yet, its not the coaches, but the senior class (Graves, Betko, Campbell & Green who joined as a transfer) which deserves all the love. In 2005, Butler's final RPI was 241.. in 2006 it was 82.. in 2007 it was 27.. and right now they have an RPI of 18. That's progression.

C - Wake Forest

The Deacs had a golden chance to make a claim for a tournament bid.. hosting Maryland, a fellow ACC bubble squad. Had Wake won, they would have had equal overall wins, equal ACC wins, equal Top 50 wins, and a better RPI than the Terps. And with a 14-1 home record, you figure the game was there's to lose. And lose they did, as Wake trailed just about the entire game after scoring the first basket. Wake is now a Tournament afterthought, especially considering they have two road games coming up, where they're just 1-8 on the season.

D - Michigan State

Maybe my expectations for this team were too high to start the season, but the Spartans season can be described as.. eh. There was the early win over Texas at home, but otherwise they've been so so. 2-5 in Big Ten road games is brutal.. especially considering that one of those wins was against Northwestern and the other a close win over Minnesota. I don't want to bash Izzo and the program too hard.. they're still 22-6 and still going to be a 5 seed, but I thought this group had a chance to be special.

F - Arizona

I think it would be sickening to be an Arizona fan. I mean how many teams that are considered NCAA Tournament locks have lost 3 of 4 home games.. let alone to non-Top 25 teams like USC and Arizona State. The Wildcats resume is based on three things: a) They've owned Washington State, b) They fattened up on overrated 2nd tier teams with inflated RPI's (UNLV, SDSU, Houston), and c) they played Memphis & Kansas (losing to both), which boosts their SOS. Because of this, Arizona still has an RPI of 21. Two years ago, Missouri State was denied a bid despite having an RPI of 21. Yet its hard to imagine that happening now because one is from the Pac-10 and the other the MVC..

Games of the Night: Maryland at Wake Forest

Maryland (17-11) at Wake Forest (16-9)

8:00 PM

Considering there are multiple games featuring ranked teams tonight on national TV, it might be odd to put Maryland/Wake as the Game of the Night. But no matchup has bigger NCAA Tournament implications. Most analysts, including Lunardi, have Maryland in the field of 65, but Wake on the outside. Yet Wake has a better RPI (65 to 69), more Top 50 wins (3 to 1), and virtually the same record. Though Wake doesn't necessarily deserve to be a Tournament team, once Wake wins tonight, there really can be no justification for why the Terps are still inside the bubble.

Prediction: Wake Forest

#4 UCLA (24-3) at Arizona State (17-9)

10:30 PM

Arizona State is certainly on the bubble.. and a win tonight would go a long way towards securing their tournament bid. The problem is that ASU hasn't beaten UCLA since February of 2004, and the last time these teams met.. the Bruins just romped. This why the Sun Devils are 7 point home underdogs. I think this game will be close and I might take ASU against the spread, but UCLA is a far superior team.

Prediction: UCLA

#17 Notre Dame (21-5) at #18 Louisville (22-6)

7:00 PM ESPN

It came down to this game or MSU at Wisconsin for the final spot. Both feature ranked teams near the top of their respective conferences. But the problem with both Notre Dame and Michigan State is that neither has proven they can get it done on the road. Both teams have beaten lesser teams on the road, but failed to come close against the top contenders. Thus there's little reason to think ND can win tonight (or that MSU can win at Wiscy).

Prediction: Louisville

Team of the Week: Wake Forest

The tragic death of Skip Prosser thrust Wake Forest (16-8, 6-5 ACC) into the spotlight during the off season. However, the spotlight of tragedy faded into a mediocre season for the Demon Deacons.

For Wake Forest, this week started off with a punch, literally. Florida State Seminole Ryan Reid was ejected in the first half of the game when he landed a right cross on Chas McFarland. After rolling around on the ground in pain for a couple of minutes, McFarland responded with his first career double-double, leading the Deacons to a 78-70 win over the Seminoles.

Wake Forest ended the week with an 86-73 upset of #2 Duke, led by freshmen James Johnson and Jeff Teague. Johnson exposed Duke’s lack of a post presence by grabbing a career high 16 boards, including five offensive rebounds. He also added 24 points. Teague was one shy of tying his career high, scoring 26 points, which included going three of three from the three point line. Wake Forest was assisted by the Blue Devils shooting 52 percent from the free throw line.

The untimely death of a coach is not the ideal way to toughen up a team; however, this week may have signaled a shift in the young Demon Deacons. They battled through adversity, gained a signature win, and put themselves into position to challenge for third in the ACC.

Honorable Mention: Drake (23-2, 14-1 MVC) clinched the Missouri Valley Conference for the first time in 37 years with a win over Northern Iowa. Don’t miss their Bracket Buster game next week against Butler.

Washington State (20-5, 8-5 Pac-10) created distance between themselves and the bottlenecked Pac-10 by securing two wins on the road, in the toughest conference in college basketball. The Cougs started the week by not “Coug’ing” it against Pac-10 doormat Oregon State, and finished it with an impressive win at Oregon.

Last Week's Winner: Duke
