Why
They Can Surprise:

For
many this is a year later than it was expected for Robert Morris to win the
Northeast Conference. With a balanced scoring attack, a high risk defense and a
whole lot of sharing the ball, the Colonials have worked their way into the post
season this year instead. Of course a high risk defense has plenty of drawbacks,
but it has worked pretty well for first year head coach Mike Rice. Guards Jeremy
Chappell and Tony Lee combine for over five steals per game and that leads to
plenty of fast break points the other way.

Chappell is also the leading scoring on the team and, along with Jimmy Langhurst
and Bateko Francisco, knocks down the long ball with consistency. Lee will
occasionally hit the outside shot, but the point guard is more effective getting
to the basket. Add forward A.J. Jackson, who can hit his fair share of three
balls, and RMU has five dynamic scorers who average at least eight points per
game. On any given night, the team has multiple players who could explode and
put up a ton of points in a hurry.

Why
They Can Disappoint:

There
are many reasons why Robert Morris allows its opponents to shoot about 45
percent from the floor. The aggressive defense gets the Colonials some easy
buckets, but it works both ways. The team does not just create turnovers, they
give them away too. Committing nearly 17 turnovers per contest has gotten the
team through the NEC, but it will not lead to any upsets in March. The other big
factor in creating a high shooting percentage for the opposition is a lack of a
defensive presence in the paint. The lone forward in the starting lineup,
Jackson, is only 6-6. Occasionally he will block some shots, but is not a major
deterrent for opponents getting to the basket.

Who
To Watch:

RMU
does not have much of a bench, but Mezie Nwigwe and Gary Wallace can do a little
scoring out of the backcourt. More important than adding more scorers is getting
some production out of Dallas Green and Freddie Harris. At 6-8, Green and Harris
will be the tallest players on the floor and helping out defensively and on the
glass is imperative during those dozen minutes or so they see action per game.

        Tony Lee

        Despite winning 10
in a row and 15 of 16, Robert Morris is still in a tight battle for the
NEC title. Senior guard Tony Lee is the Colonials best and most
consistent player.. and quietly putting up some of the best numbers in
the country. Averaging 7.0 rpg and 6.6 apg, Lee is one of the game's few
true triple double threats. He's already had two this season and came
close last night with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Amazingly,
he grabs all those rebounds despite being 6-1, and despite not even
playing 30 minutes per game. Lee averages 29.8 mpg and if you prorate
his numbers to 40 mpg, you get monster totals of 19 ppg, 9.6 rpg and 9.0
        apg.

		B
        - Bracket Busters

Granted,
most of the Bracket Busters event is rather useless.. but there are some
worthwhile games on tap. Perhaps more intriguing than even Drake/Butler,
is Davidson at Winthrop tonight. Davidson's been on a tear and Winthrop
is in the midst of the Big South title race. Winthrop is better
than their RPI of 107 suggests. They've beaten quality teams like Miami,
Georgia Tech, Akron, and Old Dominion. Such wins are much more
than Davidson can claim, despite the Wildcats 17-game winning streak.
Should be a fun game, especially compared to the usual Friday night
        slop.

		C -

        Atlantic 10

This conference is a mess
right now. Outside of Xavier at the top and Saint Bonaventure on the
bottom, the other 12 teams in the middle are good enough to beat each
other on any given night. This had led to a muddled ledger in which 10
teams are within 2 wins of each other. There's nothing wrong with parity
and depth.. but for NCAA Tournament consideration.. too much quality
might be a bad thing. If more teams were automatic losses, it would make
the records of the better teams look better.. and the selection
committee is easily fooled by looks. UMASS, for example, has as many Top
50 wins in league play as Arizona.. but the committee will be fooled by
        the letters PAC.

    	D -

        Arizona

Because of
the name on their jersey, Arizona's considered a virtual lock to make
the NCAA Tournament. But at 6-7 and with an upcoming game at Washington
State.. the Wildcats could easily be in second to last place in the
Pac-10 by the end of the weekend. And after that you have home games
against USC and UCLA.. by no means easy wins. Someone not named Jerryd
Bayless better step up soon.. or Kevin O'Neill's mini-reign in Tucson
        could be disastrous.

		F -

        Oregon State

It's nothing new to note the
Beavers struggles.. so that's not why they're on the list. What kills me
about Oregon State is that it's just a free win for the rest of the
Pac-10 and makes mediocre Pac-10 teams look good. Washington's 6-8
record doesn't look bad.. and gives a false sense that they have NCAA
possibilities. Take away Oregon State, and 4-8 looks hideous. The same
thing can be said for Cal.

Daily Dribble: Tuesday Report Card

A new
series of articles I'll be writing daily, the
		Daily
Report Card tells you all you need to know about the day in
college hoops. From good to bad and bad to worse, I'll be laying down
		the law.

		Robert Morris

No Robert
Morris is not a player, but an 11-5 team in the Northeast Conference.
The Colonials beat Boston College at Conte Forum last night, forcing the
Eagles into 20 turnovers and holding them to just 51 points. RMC came
extremely close to beating Seton Hall earlier in the year on the road,
losing in OT after blowing a 12 point half-time lead. They finally got
over the hump last night, beating a Top 100 RPI team for the first time
		since at least 1998.

		B
		-

		Matt Howard

Butler's
6-8 freshman gives the team a new inside presence they've lacked in
recent years. Against Loyola last night, he ended up with 19 points and
5 boards in 25 minutes of action. Not a dominant performance, but
he made big plays down low when it counted in the 2nd half, tipping in a
missed shot, and scoring an and-one to turn a relatively close game into
		an easy Butler victory.

		C -

		Austin Peay

The Ohio
Valley Conference is having a BAD year, ranked 30th in the RPI (ahead of
the SWAC), and with a combined non-conference record of 16-62. Austin
Peay's been the best of the bunch, starting 6-0 in conference play after
beating EIU last night, and 10-6 overall. But being the best of he worst
only gets you a C grade.

		D -

		Savannah State

4 points
in a whole half? Seriously? 1 field goal? Those numbers are hard to
imagine.. but that's what Savannah State put up in the 2nd half against
Kansas State. The final score was 85-25.. and it could have probably
been worse. Despite the 1-23 shooting effort in the 2nd half (the
worst of all-time.. in the history of the universe), I refuse to give
Savannah State an F. Why? Because they're Savannah State and they've
taken enough lumps over the past few years for losing games.

		F - College
		Basketball Schedule Makers

BCS
Championship game? Who cares. Give me some college basketball on ESPN
instead of World Series of Poker reruns. It doesn't even have to be a
great game. I would have taken Robert Morris at Boston College or Butler
at Loyola. Anything but watching a 2nd rate Ohio State team get blown
out. At least we have a Big Monday starting next week.

		Previous Best / Worst

January
		7th - Wayne Ellington / Illinois

January
		6th - Herb Sendek / Kentucky

Games of the Night: Robert Morris at Boston College

Games of the
Night

A companion to our
daily

Three Stars of the Day, we present the top three Games of the Night.

26 games on tap
tonight, but none are very intriguing. Here is the best of the bunch.

Robert
Morris (10-5) at Boston College (10-3)

7:00 PM

The only
game on Monday featuring two 10-win teams. BC is obviously a clear
favorite, but RMC can be dangerous and they did take Seton Hall down to
the wire on the road. Still on a normal night with a full schedule, this
game wouldn't even sniff top game honors.

		Prediction: Boston College

Butler
		(13-1) at Loyola (Ill) (5-9)

8:00 PM

The above
game features two 10-win teams, but this game features the only ranked
team. #11 Butler should cruise against this Horizon League foe that's
only beaten 3 D1 teams so far.

		Prediction: Butler

Tulsa
		(7-4) at Colorado (8-5)

9:00 PM

Tulsa
comes into the game having won 5 straight, while Colorado has won 3
straight, so something's got to give. My guess is that Tulsa's
streak will end because all their wins have been at home, and they
haven't proven they can win on the road.

		Prediction: Colorado

Northeast Conference Tournament Preview

In what has been a
topsy-turvy season for the majority of the Northeast Conference, it’s fitting
that seeds along with who would play in the league’s conference tournament were
not fully decided until the season’s last day. In a turn of events similar to
the good fortunes experienced by the Kansas City Chiefs, St. Francis (NY)
snagged the eight seed in the tournament by combining a win over Fairleigh
Dickinson with losses by both Monmouth and Long Island. Sacred Heart got the two
seed thanks to a win over Quinnipiac on the final day of the season, dropping
the Bobcats to the three spot. And in a three-way tie for fourth in the league
standings, Robert Morris was able to get the important quarterfinal home game
over both Mount St. Mary’s and Fairleigh Dickinson. The only two teams that knew
where they would be seeded were Wagner (seventh) and regular season champ
Central Connecticut State. Just like the regular season, expect some surprises
in this conference tournament.

Format: The
top eight teams in the NEC qualify for this event, with the higher seeds hosting
each game. After the quarterfinals, the four remaining teams are “re-seeded” so
the highest remaining team plays the lowest remaining team in terms of seeding.

Final (March 7th):
At highest remaining seed (7 PM, ESPN2)

St. Francis (NY) @ Central
Connecticut State

The Terriers found a way into the NEC
Tournament when it looked like Brian Nash’s group was doomed to another year of
missing out. They got some help in qualifying, but that would take away from the
fact that the Terriers have been playing some good basketball down the stretch.
They are the best rebounding team in the conference, something that they will
need to rely on in order to compete with the tenacious Blue Devils. Forward
Robert Hines has been one of the best players in the NEC over the past month,
and the coaches took note of this in voting him second team all conference. The
Terriers are the deeper team, but they’re going to have a tough time leaving New
Britain with a win, but they did manage to go 4-5 on the road in league play.

CCSU boasts the league’s player of
the year (Javier Mojica), two other members of the league’s first-team all
conference squad (Tristan Blackwood, Obie Nwadike), as well as the coach of the
year in the NEC (Howie Dickenman). As the top seed in the NEC Tournament, the
Blue Devils are a perfect 6-0 all-time, and they went 9-0 at home during
conference play this season. You don’t see much from this team in terms of sheer
numbers when it comes to their depth, but they get quality out of each player
expected to contribute. That’s why they’re the regular season champions. SFNY’s
chances will hinge on how they contain Blackwood and Mojica, as well as the
Terriers dominating the boards.

Wagner @ Sacred Heart

Wagner and Sacred Heart had two close
encounters during the regular season with the home team winning both. This isn’t
good news for a Wagner team that went 3-6 on the road in NEC play. Matt Vitale
is the only member of the Seahawks to have won this tournament, but junior
forward James Ulrich has been the team’s bell cow of late, and he averaged a
double-double against the Pioneers this season. Wagner is a better rebounding
team than the Pioneers, and this is an area that they will have to take
advantage of if they want to have a chance to win.

Sacred Heart is the NEC’s best
offensive team, leading the league in points per game (77.9) and three-point
percentage (38.3%) while finishing second in the conference in field goal
percentage (47.6%). First-team all conference selection Jarrid Frye has led the
team in scoring, but he’s received help from freshman backcourt partner Chauncey
Hardy. In their last game, and 87-84 win over Quinnipiac on Monday night, five
Pioneers scored in double figures. SHU is a very gifted team on the offensive
end with a plethora of options to turn to when they need a bucket. The Seahawks
will have their hands full on the defensive end, but they should be able to
score some points.

Fairleigh Dickinson @ Quinnipiac

In one of two games that are
rematches of quarterfinals in last season’s tournament, FDU visits the Bobcats
in a game that should go down to the wire like last season’s affair. A Gordon
Klaiber bucket saved the Knights, but they head into this one as the underdog as
opposed to the tournament’s top seed. Senior forward Andre Harris, a first-team
All NEC selection, has scored in double figures in every game this season, so
look for the Bobcats to focus their defensive efforts on him. Although head
coach Tom Green lost the likes of Klaiber and Andrea Crosariol from last
season’s regular season champs, he does have some experience on this team. Guard
Cameron Tyler, third in the NEC in assists this season, was a part of last
season’s success as well.

Quinnipiac has a pair of high-octane
guards in senior Adam Gonzalez and junior DeMario Anderson, but they also
receive notable contributions from forward Chris Wehye and center Victor
Akinyanju. Head coach Joe DeSantis has gone about ten deep throughout the
season, so foul trouble shouldn’t be too much of an issue for the Bobcats. Their
issue will be finding points outside of Gonzalez and Anderson if those two have
trouble hitting their shots. The two teams are about even on the glass, but
Quinnipiac tends to turn the ball over more at a clip of sixteen per game.
Turnovers and how much each team scores off their opponents mistakes will decide
which team moves on.

Mount St. Mary’s @ Robert Morris

These two teams will meet for the
sixth time in the past two seasons, and the games tend to be close affairs,
including a 67-66 win for Robert Morris in last season’s NEC quarterfinals.
Mount St. Mary’s went a putrid 3-14 on the road this season, with their only two
road wins in the NEC being over two teams (LIU, St. Francis-PA) that didn’t
qualify for the conference tournament. Senior guard Mychal Kearse is the team’s
leader, and he scored twenty-one in their 81-78 loss at RMC earlier this season.
Kearse, who was voted the league’s co-defensive player of the year, has help in
the backcourt in the form of freshman Jeremy Goode. The question for the Mount
will be how they do rebounding the basketball; they were the third worst team in
the NEC in that category.

Robert Morris, preseason pick to win
the NEC, has won the most conference tournament titles of any team in the league
with five. Unfortunately for the Colonials, however, none of which have come
after 1992. Sophomore guard Jeremy Chappell was the hero in last season’s
quarterfinal win over the Mount with a three pointer late in regulation. But it
was forward A.J. Jackson and guard Tony Lee who were voted onto the conference’s
second team due to their play this season. Of the two teams, the Colonials do a
much better job of holding onto the ball, and this along with having home court
should help them out.

NEC Weekly Honors

Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week

Tony Lee, Robert Morris
Jr., G, 6-0, 205 lbs., Boston, MA/Charlestown

Lee has stepped up his game considerably this season, and has been one of the key contributors in the Colonials’ 6-3 start. Last week, he tallied 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Robert Morris extended its non-conference home winning streak to nine with a 79-78 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. Lee hit 9-14 shots from the floor, including 1-2 from three-point range, in the contest. The 23 points was one shy of his career-high 24-point effort against Monmouth on January 5, 2006. After the Penguins closed the lead to 71-70 with 3:16 left on the clock, Lee answered back with a conventional three-point play to push the lead back to four, then helped seal the win by hitting two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to make the score 79-74. A Boston, MA native, Lee leads the NEC with 2.8 spg, and also ranks second in field goal percentage (.587), sixth in assists (4.2 apg) and seventh in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg).

Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week

Devin Sweetney, Saint Francis (PA)
Fr., G, 6-6, 180 lbs., Washington, D.C./Riverdale Baptist

Sweetney takes home his third Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week award after a near double-double performance in the Red Flash’s 70-56 win over Liberty on Saturday. With the score tied at intermission, he scored all 14 of his points in the second half and pulled down six of his nine boards as Saint Francis avenged an earlier loss to Liberty and snapped the Flames’ six-game winning streak. Sweetney hit all 12 of his free throw attempts in the contest and has now made 22 consecutive shots from the charity stripe. The Washington, D.C. product is averaging an NEC-best 6.3 free throw attempts per game and is the league leader from the line at 91.2 percent. Sweetney also paces all conference freshman with 14.2 ppg (eighth in NEC) and 7.0 rpg (fourth in NEC).

NEC Player & Rookie of the Week

Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week

A.J. Jackson, Robert Morris

Sr., F, 6-6, 230 lbs., Monessen, PA/Monessen
Jackson, a first team all-NEC pick in 2005-06, picked right up where he left off, putting up big numbers in the Colonials’ 2-0 week. He averaged 27.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and shot 52.8 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the charity stripe as Robert Morris stopped Florida International, 96-72, in its season opener on Monday, then travelled to Huntington, WV and downed Marshall, 73-69, on Friday. Jackson tallied a pair of game-highs with 25 points (10-18 FG, 2-4 3PFG) and eight boards as the Colonials broke open a close game in the second half with FIU. The Monessen, PA native followed with his signature game in a Colonial uniform with 30 points, 15 rebounds and three assists against Marshall. He scored 26 of his 30 points in the second half as the Colonials rallied from a 15-point deficit with less than ten minutes to play. Jackson accounted for 16 points - including the game-tying trifecta - in a 23-8 run that evened the score at 67-67 with 1:35 to play. The double-double was the 15th of his career and helped Robert Morris start the season with a 2-0 record for the first time in 11 years.

Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week

Jeremy Goode, Mount St. Mary’s

Fr., G, 5-9, 172 lbs., Charlotte, NC/Providence Day
A jet-quick point guard, Goode is off to a quick start at the Mount and sparked the team to its first win of the season last week. He averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals, while shooting 52.9 percent from the floor. Goode came off the bench to score eight of his team-high 18 points (4-7 FG, 8-10 FT), and added four rebounds and six assists in an 81-70 double overtime win over James Madison on Monday. His second three-pointer of the game with 3:36 left in the second extra session gave the Mount the lead for good. Goode made his first career start on Saturday, and finished with 12 points, six assists and three steals in a 66-60 setback at La Salle. For the season, the Charlotte, NC product leads the Mount with 4.0 apg, and ranks third with 10.0 ppg.

NEC Coaches Poll & All-Conference

Somerset, NJ -- Led by three returning starters, including a preseason all-NEC pick, defending tournament champion Monmouth has been tabbed as the 2006-07 NEC men’s basketball preseason favorite, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches. The preseason rankings, along with the league’s preseason all-conference team, were announced during a media teleconference with coaches this afternoon as a prelude to the NEC’s 26th season.

Looking to become the first league team since Rider in 1993 and 1994 to repeat as NEC champion, Monmouth earned six first place votes from league head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team. The Hawks narrowly edged out Robert Morris, which received the remaining five first place votes. With all five starters back, Long Island was chosen third, followed by Central Connecticut State and Quinnipiac tied for fourth. Wagner was picked sixth, while defending NEC regular season champion Fairleigh Dickinson landed in seventh. Rounding out the poll were St. Francis (NY) in eighth, followed in order by Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary’s and Saint Francis (PA).

This year marks the eighth time that Monmouth has been selected the NEC’s preseason favorite by league head coaches, the most in conference history by a wide margin. Of the seven previous occasions in which Monmouth was picked first, the only one that resulted in an NEC title came in 1996 when the Hawks defeated preseason co-favorite Rider, 60-59.
