Illinois State's Sampay Undergoes Surgery

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior forward Brandon Sampay underwent surgery Monday to repair a congenital condition in his left
hip, and as a result, will be sidelined for four-to-five months.
Sampay's surgery went well, and he has already begun the rehabilitation
process.

"We feel very badly for Brandon, as he finished last
season so strongly and has had a tremendous attitude, work ethic and
desire to have a great senior season," said head basketball coach Tim Jankovich.
"This will definitely set him back, but we're hopeful and optimistic
that he will have a full recovery and still be able to maintain the
momentum that he was enjoying."

Sampay averaged 4.1 points and
2.6 rebounds per game last season, while seeing action in 31 contests.
In addition to losing the 6-foot-8 Sampay for the early part of the
season, the Redbirds' Bobby Hill, another forward, is currently rehabbing following his knee surgery.

"Obviously
this surgery, along with Bobby's ACL surgery, is a big blow and setback
to our team, particularly in the early part of the season," said
Jankovich. "We will have many more challenges than normal because of
this, and yet, I'm still optimistic that in the long run, we could
become an outstanding team."

Georgia Tech's Dickey Taking Red-Shirt

ATLANTA - Ra'Sean Dickey, a senior center for Georgia Tech's men's basketball team, has decided to red-shirt the 2007-08 season.

The 6-10, 250-pound Dickey, who has missed the first eight games of the season due to academic ineligibility, also has been forced to miss considerable practice time because of acute tendonitis in his right knee and is not yet able to play.

"Ra'Sean is just not healthy, he's experiencing severe tendonitis in one knee and also has problems in his other knee from a past injury," said head coach Paul Hewitt. "It is in his best interest at this point to get healthy, and he is assured of graduating in the spring of 2009 if he continues on his current schedule academically.

"He has missed several practices in the fall and had to pull out of a practice as early as Sunday because of his knee problems. So we've decided it is in his best interest to red-shirt."

Dickey, from Clio, S.C., has averaged 8.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in his three seasons at Tech, and has made 60.1 percent of his field goals. He averaged 5.1 points as a freshman, 13.2 as a sophomore, and 8.1 last year.

"I've decided that it's best for me to stay on my present course, concentrate on my academics and do everything I can to get healthy so, hopefully, I can play another season and get my degree," said Dickey, who majors in Management.

Syracuse Guard Devendorf Done For Season

Syracuse junior guard

Eric
Devendorf will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL
in his left knee, the university announced yesterday. The injury occurred when
Devendorf landed awkwardly on his left leg after making a pass during the second
half against East Tennessee State on Saturday. "You can't afford to lose guys
like Eric," Boeheim said following Saturday's game." He's a tremendous player.
There's nothing you can do. You try to make it up as best as you can." Devendorf
is the second Orange guard to tear his ACL this season; fellow starter Andy
Rautins tore his in August. Along with the loss of guard Josh Wright -- who
didn't attend practice last week and of whom Boeheim said: "I assume he's not
going to play basketball any more this year" -- Syracuse is down to just seven
scholarship players. Devendorf averaged 17.0 points and 3.9 assists per game.

Tasmin Mitchell Likely Out For the Season

As reported by numerous
media outlets Monday, LSU junior forward

Tasmin Mitchell is likely out for the
season after it was decided he would need to undergo surgery
to repair a stress fracture in his left ankle that has kept him out for the
majority of this season. “It’s the best decision to go ahead with the surgery
and there is a good chance I will probably not be back this season,” Mitchell
said. “As of right now, I haven’t really made the decision yet. What I think I’m
going to do is redshirt.” Recovery will take at least six-to-eight weeks. Junior
Garrett Temple said the loss of Mitchell affects the team more than the numbers
indicate. “He’s really the heart of our team in a lot of ways,” Temple told
The (Baton Rouge) Advocate. “It changes us a whole lot to not have him out
there with us.”

Spencer Hawes to Have Arthroscopic Surgery

SEATTLE -- University of Washington freshman Spencer Hawes (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to remove a loose particle in his right knee, men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced Tuesday.

The 7-foot center is projected to be sidelined for two to four weeks, but a true timeline for his return won’t be available until the day after the surgery at the earliest.

“This is obviously a setback for Spencer and our program,” said Romar. “But, we are very optimistic based on what we have been told that he shouldn’t be out for very long. It also helps that he was already in great condition.”

Romar served as the head coach of the United States’ team during last summer’s FIBA Americas under-18 Championships. Hawes was a member of that team that won the gold medal in San Antonio, Texas.

“We spent time together in July with the USA team to where he learned a lot of the things we’ll be going over during preseason practice,” explained Romar. “So, he’s already somewhat familiar with our system. We don’t anticipate him being too far behind.”

A McDonald’s All-American, Hawes led Seattle Prep High School to the 2006 Washington state Class AAA state championship. He averaged 19.9 points and 11.3 rebounds as a senior and received the State Player of the Year award.

All-Star Sports labeled Hawes as the No. 2 high school player in the class of 2006, the top signee by any Pac-10 school. He was announced as the top prospect in the Best in the West poll of coaches and scouts conducted by the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

Hawes is the son of former Husky basketball player Jeff Hawes. His uncle, Steve Hawes, was a two-time All-American and Husky Hall of Fame inductee who played 10 seasons in the NBA.

The Huskies begin preparation for the 2006-07 season with their first official practice on Friday. The first game is Nov. 3, an exhibition contest against Saint Martin’s.
