Toledo Signs Clayton Sterling

TOLEDO, OH - Head Coach Gene Cross announced on Tuesday that Clayton Sterling (Brooklyn, NY) has joined the University of Toledo men’s basketball program. Sterling’s addition brings the Rockets’ incoming recruiting class size to five with Sterling joining Stephen Albrecht (Crown Point, IN), Larry Bastfield (Baltimore, MD), Ian Salter (Fairfax, CA) and Zac Taylor (Oregon, OH).

“I’m really looking forward to having Clayton as part of our program,” Cross said. “He brings great leadership and a winning attitude to what is already a strong group, and it’s always important to have a point guard who comes from a winning background and is a good leader.”

A 6-2, 180-pound guard, Sterling averaged 16.8 points, six rebounds and five assists per game for Boys and Girls High School as a senior and was named to the New York Daily News All-Brooklyn First Team and also was a second-team all-city selection. In addition, he helped the Kangaroos to back-to-back appearances in the Public School Athletic League title game and was named his team’s Most Valuable Player each year. As a junior, he was named his team’s Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 6.2 points, three rounds and two assists per game.

Cross said Sterling’s ability to play both guard positions in the backcourt will be valuable for the Rockets in the upcoming 2008-09 campaign.

“Clayton played the point for his team in high school, but I also feel we’ll be able to play him off the ball and play him and Larry (Bastfield) together,” Cross said. “I want to be able to play two point guards at times to run our offense more efficiently and push the ball up the floor.”

FAU Announces Four Recruits

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's basketball Head Coach Mike Jarvis has received commitments from four players who will attend the university and be part of the Owls' team in 2008-09. The recruits include a pair of the nation's top prep school guards, Alex Tucker (Redondo Beach, California), Shavar Richardson (Bronx, New York) and sharp-shooting high school standout Nick Gagel (Jeffersontown, Kentucky).

Richardson, a 6-foot-2-inch combo guard, averaged 17.6 points per game at New Creations Christian School in Richmond, Indiana last season. Originally from New York's Bishop Laughlin High School, Richardson helped New Creations prep go 41-9 and helped the Flyers win the 2008 Pennsylvania Prep School Invitational National Championship. A true two-guard and excellent shooter, Richardson also played point guard for a Flyers team that had five players average double-figures in scoring.

Speedy 6-foot point guard Alex Tucker, a product of Redondo Union High School, committed to FAU after attending Summit College Prep in Simi Valley, California, playing for Summit's elite prep program which is recognized as one of the best nationwide. Tucker was an All-CIF guard at Redondo Union, helping the Sea Hawks compile one of the best records in school history during his senior season in 2006-07.

Jarvis also has signed Nick Gagel, a 2008 graduate of Kentucky's Jeffersontown High School. Gagel had a phenomenal career at J'Town, playing a key role on the Chargers' state championship team of 2006. He finished his prep career with 1,277 points and set school records by making 210 three-point shots and shooting 49 percent from a three-point range as a three-year starter. Gagel averaged 15.8 points per game as a senior at J'Town, and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) named him its 2008 Region 7 Player of the Year. The Associated Press named Gagel to its Kentucky High School Boys' All-State basketball team, one of just 21 prep players in Kentucky to be recognized by the AP in 2008. Gagel's 16 points from the 2008 Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game also earned him game MVP honors.

Justin Davis (Jacksonville, Florida), a 6-foot-9-inch post player, will transfer to FAU after playing at Mercer University as a true freshman in 2007-08. Davis was a two-time team MVP at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville where he averaged 20 points per game and 11.6 rebounds as a senior. Davis totaled 10 blocks and 36 rebounds in 21 games at Mercer last season.

St. John's Signs Phil Wait to NLI

QUEENS, N.Y. (June 9, 2008) – St. John’s head men’s basketball coach Norm Roberts announced the signing of English big man Phil Wait to a national letter of intent to join the Red Storm for the 2008-09 season. Wait, a 7-1, 245-pound center originally from Manchester, England, is the third spring signee for Roberts’ squad, in addition to guards TyShwan Edmondson (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights Academy) and Quincy Roberts (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg), who both signed in late April.

“Phil is a great kid with great size and an unbelievable basketball I.Q.,” said Roberts, entering his fifth year at the helm of the Red Storm. “He will certainly add size to our program and the kind of skill level in the low post that can make an impact for us next season.”

A long and talented true big man, Wait can score over both shoulders, is an adept passer out of the post and owns a solid jumper to 15-feet. The skilled center spent the 2007-08 season at the Gran Canaria Basketball Academy off the coast of Spain, following two years in prep school at Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire.

Wait played for coach Gregor Makechnie for two seasons at Proctor in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), the same league as former Bridgton Academy (Maine) stars and current St. John’s teammates Justin Burrell and Paris Horne. As a junior in 2005-06, Wait helped the Hornets to an appearance in the NEPSAC championship game, while playing alongside Proctor teammate and current UConn guard Jerome Dyson. Wait averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds as a senior at Proctor in 2006-07.

“Phil is a big, long guy that is very mobile and athletic for his size, and by all accounts he added more strength during his year in Spain,” said Makechnie. “He is a delightful young man. I think people at St. John’s and fans of the program will enjoy getting to know Phil.”

LMU Adds Vernon Teel to Solid Class

Los Angeles, CA -- The Loyola Marymount University men's basketball team continued to add to its roster for the 2008-09 season under first-year Head Coach Bill Bayno with the signing of junior college transfer Vernon Teel and Great Britain National Team member Ashley Hamilton.

With Teel and Hamilton signing National Letters of Intent, it brings the Lions' recruiting class under Bayno to five. Teel joins the Lions from Chipola College in Florida while Hamilton comes from the Gran Canaria Basketball Academy in Spain. Teel will be a sophomore athletically while Hamilton will be a freshman. Both will be eligible to play in 2008-09.

"The commitment from both Vernon and Ashley were important to the building of our program," said Bayno. "This gives us two players who have the ability to be high major players eligible to play right away. Both are very talented, athletic players who could provide a huge impact in the WCC right away."

The 6-4 Teel, a native of Jamica, New York, averaged 35.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game as a senior at Flushing (NY) High School. He was named the IS8 Most Valuable Player, was an ABCD Camp All Star and a McDonald¹s All-America nominee. He left as Flushing High's all-time leading scorer and the NYS leading scorer.

"Vernon is a multiple-position type player who can be effective with aggressive defense and his ability offensively create," said Bayno. "He was a prolific scorer in high school but was able to change and grow as a player at the junior college level. He has become very good in the ability to get his teammates great shots.²

Following high school, he went to Long Island University for one season where he did not play. He then transferred to Chipola. While at the junior college in Marianna, Fla. Teel helped the team to a No. 2 national ranking in the NJCAA and helped them win the Florida State Championship and earn a bid to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

As for the 6-7, 210-pound Hamilton, he played for the Great Britain Under-20 National team, helping them to the quarterfinals of the European Championships. He had 19 points and eight rebounds against Finland in the quarters.

"Ashley is a major college athlete that will not only bring incredible leaping ability, but a tough, unselfish style of play that will allow us to be successful," said Bayno. "He has the ability to guard at multiple positions. Offensively, he uses his strength to get to the rim while also being able to score in the post. He should be able to have a big impact at both ends of the floor in rebounding the basketball."

Teel and Hamilton join incoming Lions LaRon Armstead (Fremont HS), Larry Davis (Seton Hall) and Drew Viney (Oregon). Davis and Viney will sit out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

ORU Signs Maryland's Beloved Rogers

TULSA -- Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md.) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play basketball at Oral Roberts University beginning next fall, ORU head coach Scott Sutton announced Wednesday.

Rogers, a 6-3, 200-pound guard, comes to ORU from Princeton Day Academy in Lanham, Md., a Washington, D.C. suburb. One of the top seniors in Maryland, Rogers led the state in scoring at 27.8-points per game, and was also the state leader in 3-pointers per game (3.5) and steals per game (3.6).

"This is a great pick up for us, especially this late in the spring," said Sutton. "Beloved has the size, strength and skills to be an impact player. I love his intangibles. You can'?t teach speed, quickness and athleticism. He has chance to eventually be a great player for us."

Roger's standout senior season was highlighted by five tournament championships and five tourney MVP honors, including top player awards at the South Shore Thanksgiving Shootout in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Western Hills Holiday Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Crossin Memorial Holiday Classic in Plymouth, Pa.

The team captain also posted 13 games with 30 or more points, 6 games with 30-plus points in the second half, two 40 point games and a post-season masterpiece win where he nailed 10 three-pointers and scored 46 points at Friendship Edison HS in Washington, D.C.

Princeton Day's first-year basketball program finished as the 4th-ranked Christian School in America (National Christian School Athletic Association). The National Association of Christian Athletes ranked the Storm No. 8 among Christian school teams in America. And Hoopsusa.com tabbed the Princeton Day squad as the 35th-best squad amongst all Private School teams in the country.

Also an excellent student, Rogers nears graduation with a 3.7 grade-point average while taking mostly honors courses his senior year.

LBSU Signs Former Providence G Dwain Williams

Long Beach, Calif.--Long Beach State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dan Monson announced today that Dwain Williams (Guard, 6-0, 170, San Diego, Calif., Providence College, Vista Murrieta HS) signed a National Letter-of-Intent. Williams, who attended Providence College for two years, will have two years of eligibility remaining with the 49ers.

“Dwain Williams is a great addition to our program,” said Monson. “His success in the Big East Conference demonstrates that he is a proven high-level point guard that will help solidify our backcourt.”

“I felt that Long Beach was the best place to go in that league,” said Williams. “It’s close to my mother and I have a single parent, raising five kids on her own. To come back home and be near my family and help put Long Beach on the map were the main reasons I chose Long Beach State. Coach Monson and the coaching staff are a good group of guys and good recruiters. They told me I’ll have an opportunity to come in and be a leader on the team and bring my “A” game every night and to practice every day and bring leadership. They were really real. Everything was up front. They are a good group of guys and my mom loved them.”

Williams lettered two years at Providence College. This past season he averaged 11.0 points per game, third-best on the Friar squad, while adding 2.3 assists per game. He shot an impressive .902 (46-51) at the free throw line and .407 (48-118) from three-point range. In Big?East Conference games he averaged 13.0 points and 2.1 assists per game. Williams appeared in 21 games, starting 17 times. He scored in double figures 10 times, including a career-high 23 points at Connecticut (1/17/08). He also had 21 points at Syracuse, and 20 points against both Notre Dame and DePaul.

Eastern Washington Signs Mark Dunn

Cheney, WA - Mark Dunn, a 6-foot-8, 280-pound forward from Danville Area Community College in Illinois, has signed a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and play men's basketball for the Eagles. He is from Trafalgar, Ind., and is a 2006 graduate of Indian Creek High School.

Dunn averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Danville, helping the Jaguars to a fourth-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament.

"Mark not only provides us with much-needed size and strength, but he also has a very high basketball I.Q.," said EWU head coach Kirk Earlywine. "He has a skill level that will allow us to utilize him facing the basket as well as in the post."

Dunn played in 32 games this past season at Danville, averaging 13.7 minutes per game as a 12-game starter. He made 59-of-104 field goal attempts for 56.7 percent, and 57-of-77 free throws for 74.0 percent. He had 124 total rebounds, including 50 on the offensive end.

As a freshman in 2006-07, Dunn averaged four points and four rebounds with his career highs for points (26) and rebounds (13) coming in the same game against rival John Wood.

"I'm excited for Mark and happy for him to choose Eastern Washington and play for coach Earlywine and (assistant coach) Jamie Matthews," said Danville head coach Mike Carpenter. "They have that program going in the right direction. He'll be a good fit and his best basketball is ahead of him. He's a hard worker and dedicated to the game, and he's a great person and a good student."

Dunn scored in double figures eight times, including a season-high 19 in an 88-51 win over Wabash College JV when he made 9-of-12 shots from the field. He had at least eight rebounds on five occasions, including 10 when he had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards in a 67-58 win over Spoon River.

He also made 7-of-10 shots from the floor to finish with 18 points and nine rebounds in the school's season-opening 67-62 loss to Lincoln Trail. He missed four games during the year because of a high ankle sprain.

Danville finished 24-12 and hosted the national tournament where it recorded a 73-66 quarterfinal victory over Penn Valley, Kan., before losing its final two games to finish fourth. The Jaguars were 9-5 in the Midwest Athletic Conference before winning the Region 24 championship and national berth with three-straight victories.

"We got hot at the end of the season and Mark was a big part of that," said Carpenter. "He provided leadership and scoring punch inside. His defense was outstanding down the stretch."

On their way to the national semifinals, the Jaguars defeated, in order, 11th-ranked Illinois Central (78-71), sixth-ranked Lincoln (76-71) and eighth-ranked Penn Valley (73-66). Danville was ranked 16th entering the post-season.

"Mark has played against some very good competition in his time here," added Carpenter "That's going to prepare him well moving on to the next level."

Dunn lettered four years in basketball at Indian Creek and twice was selected to the All-Mid Hoosier Conference team. As a senior, he was a Top 100 selection by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) and was an Indianapolis Star player of the week. As a junior at Indian Creek, Dunn averaged 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds, with highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Dunn's high school coach was Rex Wilson, who is from the same hometown as Earlywine (Fortville, Ind.) and played basketball for Earlywine's father at Mt. Vernon High School.

Arizona Cactus Classic Scouting Reports: John Wall, Renardo Sidney & More

The third annual Arizona Cactus Classic is now in the books, with the Houston Hoops winning the crown thanks to a 70-67 win over the Compton Magic Sunday afternoon. On a weekend in which the Class of 2009’s top prospect (LA Dream Team’s Renardo Sidney) showed up, along with quite a few others, it’s unfortunate that the Wear twins, Reeves Nelson and Keith “Tiny” Gallon weren’t on display. But there were plenty of other top-notch prospects, along with some other youngsters who have been under the radar for most of the year.

Here are some scouting reports (broken down in three parts due to the number of reports) on a few of those quality players, and thanks to tournament director Jim Storey for running such a quality event this past weekend.

--Players are from the Class of 2009 unless noted otherwise.

--Ranking within the class and school choices are according to Rivals.com.

--Since members of these classes (2009-12) aren’t allowed to sign a National Letter of Intent at this time, any commitments as of this time are strictly verbal.

Part One: Players #1 to 60 Nationally

PG John Wall (Raleigh, NC; D-One Sports; Rivals #1)

Recruiting experts have made the comparison between Wall and Derrick Rose, and with good reason. Wall (6’4, 184) is explosive in getting to the basket and is a more than capable finisher. And he’s also very adept at setting up his teammates, a requirement for any reputable point guard. Two issues for John: the outside shot is still a work in progress, almost mechanical at times. And on the defensive end of the floor, times of focus are followed by moments in which you wonder if he even knows who he should be guarding.

Still the best pure point in his class, look for Wall to possibly be one of the movers up into the top five in his class with a good summer. Like Sidney, he’s also got a broad list of schools to look at, with just about the entire ACC looking to acquire his services.

F Renardo Sidney (Los Angeles; LA Dream Team; Rivals #4)

Standing at 6-10 and 230 pounds, the rising senior from Fairfax HS can dominate a game due to his size alone. But don’t let that fool you; the young man is skilled, with the ability to make his way to the basket when guarded by one defender or find the open man when doubled. On the other end of the floor, it’s extremely tough to score on him straight up and he does a good job of helping weak side.

The issue with Sidney: sometimes the game can become so easy that he loses focus. As long as he focuses solely on dominating the game from start to finish, he’ll remain atop the ranking for his class. He’s got a broad list of schools to choose from right now, dominated by Pac-10 schools.

F John Henson (Round Rock, TX; Franchize All-Stars; Rivals #5)

Coming in at 6-10, 200 pounds (I think the weight may be a tad inflated) the North Carolina commit has the athletic ability to make his mark on a game. Possessing extremely long arms, Henson can get across the lane on defense to either block or alter opposing teams’ shots. His back to the basket game is decent for a player of his build, something that will only improve as his body matures and fills out.

John also does a good job of attacking the offensive glass, but he needs to be more assertive in regards to defensive rebounding. Combined with the Wear twins and whichever experienced bigs remain in Chapel Hill, head coach Roy Williams won’t be lacking interior options in 2009.

PG Abdul Gaddy (Tacoma, WA; Northwest Panthers; Rivals #14)

Right behind Wall in the point guard rankings is Gaddy, a lead guard (6’3, 170) who has a very good feel for the game. If his team needed scoring, then he brought that to the table. And when they simply needed him to get the ball to the right people in the right spots, he did that as well. One of the early treats of the tournament was the matchup in pool play between Gaddy and Wall, and neither disappointed. The game, however, did show that Gaddy has to improve on the defensive end of the floor.

A verbal commit to Arizona, Gaddy stated this weekend that he’s still a go to Arizona as of now, even with the departure of assistants Miles Simon and Josh Pastner (Pastner hasn’t left just yet, but many expect him to take a position at Memphis).

G Avery Bradley (Tacoma, WA; Northwest Panthers; Rivals # 17)

Along with Abdul Gaddy, Bradley (6-3, 175) helped form one of the tougher backcourt tandems in the event. Of the seven games he played, the combo guard went for at least twenty in six of those contests and scored thirty or more in consecutive games. Suffice it to say, when Bradley decides that he’s going to score then you may as well mark the points down in the scorebook. Three of the four Pac-10 Northwest schools have offered Bradley (not Washington), with conference foes Arizona, Cal and USC following suit. The list right now is a long one, so it’s anyone’s guess where he could end up.

G Nolan Dennis (North Richland Hills, TX; Dallas Mustangs; Rivals # 36)

Yet another spectacular guard who was on display this past weekend, Dennis (6-5, 185) would best be described as a combo guard at this point in time. He can fill it up from just about anywhere on the floor, although he did struggle from behind the arc in the Mustangs’ four games. Also good at finding the open man, Dennis displayed himself as a player equally comfortable on or off of the ball on offense. And when the ball’s in his possession, you may as well forget about taking it from Nolan; his handle is that good. He’s already received offers from a number of schools, most notably Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA.

F Marshawn Powell (Crozet, VA; Boo Williams; Rivals # 45)

Powell (6-6, 230) wasn’t 100% this weekend, but there were some flashes of the skills that have him in the same boat as club teammates Painter and Spurlock in regards to his recruitment. He’s got a quick first step, allowing him to get to the basket off the dribble, and if you play off of Powell he can knock down the open jumper. He’s the type of player that won’t wow you with individual plays, but when you look up he’s on the verge of a double-double. Powell can also be effective with his back to the basket, and he’s a solid defender. With an offer from Arkansas in tow, look for Powell to sift through a few more offers as the summer season progresses.

F Jamil Wilson (Racine, WI; Wisconsin Playground Elite; Rivals # 58)

Wilson (6-7, 211), like a few of the other top swingmen in the Class of 2009, has an impressive wingspan that helps him out on both ends of the floor. He’s not a speed demon, but he does have the handle necessary to get to the basket. He can hit the outside shot when it’s given to him, but he’s more comfortable either at mid-range or close to the basket. On defense, Jamil is a good weak-side defender and can also attack the passing lanes thanks to his length. He’s got quite a few offers on the table right now, with in-state powers Wisconsin and Marquette both hoping to keep him in the state.

F Tristan Spurlock (Rockville, MD; Boo Williams, Rivals #66)

Spurlock (6-6, 216) is an athletic wing who at this stage in his development may be more comfortable as a slasher than an outside shooter. This past weekend he struggled somewhat with his offensive game, but Spurlock is a “stat sheet stuffer” who can find a way to contribute even when his shot isn’t falling. This also highlights his versatility, possessing the strength to go inside along with the ball-handling to be more than capable of playing on the perimeter. With offers from Georgetown, Virginia and Maryland already in tow, look for Spurlock to accumulate even more (Wake Forest?) as the summer progresses.

Marist Signs Hall & Vouyoukas to National Letters of Intent

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ? Marist head men’s basketball coach Chuck Martin announced the signing of R.J. Hall and Alex Vouyoukas to National Letters of Intent on Friday. Hall and Vouyoukas, who will attend Marist in the fall of 2008, are the first two players to sign with the Red Foxes since Martin was hired as head coach on April 17. “We are bringing in two quality people with the potential to be outstanding players in this league,” Martin said. “Both come from winning programs, which is extremely important to me and my staff at Marist.”

R.J. Hall ? 5’10” / 170 ? Guard ? Bloomfield Tech ? Bloomfield, N.J.

Hall, a pure point guard, averaged 14 points and five assists per game this past season. His teams at Bloomfield Tech combined for 103 victories in his varsity career. Hall was named First Team All-Essex County and an Essex County Scholar-Athlete.

Martin on Hall: “What I like about R.J. is that he owns speed. It belongs to him. Regardless of who his opponent is, they can’t take that away from him. The way I want to play, that is extremely critical to our program.”

Alex Vouyoukas ? 6’9” / 225 ? Forward ? Blair Academy (N.J.) ? Greece

Vouyoukas, a native of Greece, played this past season at Blair Academy in New Jersey. He helped lead his team to the state prep tournament final this season. Vouyoukas (pronounced Voo-YOU-kas) is trying out this summer for Greece’s 20-and-under national team.

Martin on Vouyoukas: “Alex is a skilled big man who is not afraid to rebound in traffic. With hard work, he can blossom into a very good player in the MAAC.”
