NBA: Hurt by the Economy?

By:

Jason Fleming

The Economy and the NBA: The
poor economic situation seems to be hitting the sporting world. The NBA
has decided they needed to lay off about 80 workers, according to
Commissioner David Stern.

"We made a decision some months ago that the
economy was going to be a bit wobbly, so we began a belt-tightening
that will result in a work-force reduction of about 9 percent
domestically," Stern said Sunday, speaking before an NBA preseason game
at London's O2 arena.

"There is a season-ticket renewal rate decline,
and new sales are also being hit," he said. "My guess is when [the
regular season] kicks off, we will be down modestly in season ticket
sales."

That's an interesting forecast when juxtaposed
with history. In the past when there have been economic downturns like
this sports and entertainment have been the last to feel any effect,
and sometimes spending in that area actually goes up. The idea is
sports and movies are cheaper alternatives to big ticket purchases or
travel, so people still want a little something to distract them from
reality, but in smaller, cheaper doses – and as expensive as it is to
go to a game, it's still cheaper than a ski weekend or flying anywhere.

Today, though, that doesn't seem to be the
expectation. Baseball and the NFL have both discussed internally and
externally about the probability of making less money in the next year
or two, not just the NBA. Many expect this time to be different, that
spending on sports will go down along with spending in general instead
of maintaining.

Why is that?

There are a few reasons, in this writer's
opinion, most notably the prevalence of so many alternative outlets to
see the games. There are more games televised nationally than ever
before, so the casual fan can catch all the big names as much as they
like.

If you are more than a casual fan, you can get
NBA League Pass in most cable packages for $160. If someone would
normally take a family of four to a game, which might even cost more
than access to every televised game during the season. Plus, with
League Pass you get access to games online as well.

And what happens if you miss a game? In the past
you read about it in the paper, but now you can watch highlights online
and read about from any number of outlets, blogs, and discuss it with
other fans on various forums and messageboards.

In short, if you are a fan you can get access to
info, commentary and highlights much more easily than you ever could,
so if you are feeling a bit of a budget crunch there isn't any need to
spend your money at the stadium to satisfying your hoops craving. In a
good economy that doesn't really hurt the league because people will
always want to see the games and cheer with fellow fans, but in times
like now, it hurts.

What about you? Will you be spending less on the NBA this season? More? The same? Drop a line in the comments and let us know.

NBA: Big Preseason Surprises

By:

Librado Wright

The
summer has come and gone, which involved a lot of big names changing
their zip codes, coaches changing teams, and a few key trades that
should help teams improve this season. Now, it's all about the
pre-season. Unlike past years, where there hasn't been much to talk
about, this season already has a few headlines that are worth
mentioning.

"Stephon Marbury Accepts Backup Role"

Remember that player who was labeled as a guy
who only cared about his individual stats and wasn't a team player?
Well, all that has changed. With publicly stating that he is okay with
coming off the bench, Knicks guard Stephon Marbury has finally shown signs of maturity and
selflessness. The Knicks made the move to change coaches this summer by
bringing in Mike D'Antoni from the Suns and acquired point guard Chris Duhon from the Bulls in free agency. There were rumors that Starbury would be released or
even traded, but so far he is still with the Knicks . Marbury has been
in the headlines since being acquired by the Knicks for all the wrong
reasons, but he admitted he wants to win a championship and will do
anything to do so. This new resound change of heart by Marbury
definitely tops the list of surprises this preseason.

"Jamaal Tinsley Still With Pacers"

Whatever happened to Jamaal Tinsley being shipped out of Indiana because he did not fit in the offensive scheme that the Pacers
have? Just like most rumors this one did not flourish to be much of
anything. Maybe it's a hard trade for the Pacers due to Tinsley's
injury-plagued season a year ago, and with having three years still
left on his contract. One would only believe that Tinsley's days are
numbered. The Pacers definitely want to get something done and Tinsley
wants this resolved so he can start playing basketball. Right now everything is up in the year and all this speculation will remain a constant distraction.

"Vince Carter Wants To Stay In New Jersey"

After having a disappointing season a year ago
for the Nets, there were many talks that Vince Carter could be on his
way out New Jersey as this past summer approached. Instead, it was the
long time Net Richard Jefferson that packed his bags and was traded to
the Milwaukee Bucks. Carter signed a huge contract before the start of last season and the Nets were looking for the trio of Jason Kidd,
Vince Carter, and Richard Jefferson to lead this team to back to the
playoffs. But that never happened and with both Kidd and Jefferson
gone, Carter is left to help carry this team this season. At this point
the Nets can't afford to get rid of Carter with this roster depleted of
stars. Not to mention, he is the only true offensive threat the Nets
will have this season.

"Greg Oden Impressive In First Game"

If you were nervous that Greg Oden would not be
the same player that he was before his injury prior to the start of
last season, you may reconsider after Tuesday night when he displayed
his strong debut for the Portland Trail Blazers. Oden scored an
impressive 13 points in 20 minutes after coming into camp out of shape,
and only playing in two summer league games since being drafted.
Oden's ability to put up big numbers should not come as a surprise, but
coming out in his first official game for the Trail Blazers and making
a mark right from the opening tip is something impressive.

It's only safe to say that the mumbles and rumors in the NBA will continue as the regular season approaches. As always HOOPSWORLD
will make sure you are up to speed on everything that's going on. Stay
tuned!

Philadelphia 76ers 0-0 This is an "on paper" ranking. How much of a boost
will forward Elton Brand give the Sixers? Last year they won just 40 games but
were tremendous in the second half of the season. Can they up the win total by
10-12 games?

Dallas Mavericks
0-0 Last year the Mavericks struggled to find their identity - before and after
the Jason Kidd trade. A full training camp (with new Coach Rick Carlisle) should
lead to stronger continuity. The worries are talent, make-up and heart. Do the
Mavericks have enough of all three? On paper they certainly have the talent . .
.

Toronto
Raptors 0-0 Can forward/center Jermaine O'Neal resurrect his career? It
wasn't long ago that O'Neal was one of the top big men in the league. Paired
with forward Chris Bosh and a crew of solid role players, the Raptors could be a
force in the East. The key will be for O'Neal and his iffy knees to stay
healthy.

Portland Trail
Blazers 0-0 This may be low for the Blazers. Very low. Portland may make the
leap - like the Hornets went a year ago from the lottery to a 56-win team. This
crew seems to have issues staying healthy but the potential of guard Brandon
Roy, forward/center LaMarcus Aldridge and rookie center Greg Oden is off the
charts. Portland is deep, young, hungry - and dangerous.

15
Los Angeles
Clippers 0-0 Completely revamped, the Clippers have a high ceiling but a low
floor. They could hit 50 wins - or if health and chemistry get in the way - they
might get just half that number. Point guard Baron Davis believes and is ready
to lead the Clippers to the postseason. Power forward/center Marcus Camby - who
is absolutely crucial to what LA is looking to accomplish - has missed most of
camp with the flu.

Washington Wizards 0-0 If only the Wizards could get their roster on the
court. Knee problems hampered guard Gilbert Arenas all year and he may not be
back until at least December. The potential is high for Washington but until
they can go full steam - they're going to be just average.

Miami
Heat 0-0 The HEAT are hard to peg. They were absolutely horrid last year -
but now guard Dwyane Wade is healthy. With rookie Michael Beasley joining
forwards Shawn Marion and Udonis Haslem - Miami may have some talent to put
around Wade. The bigger concern is at the point with a number of interesting but
unproven options (Marcus Banks, Chris Quinn, Mario Chalmers and Shaun
Livingston).

Denver
Nuggets 0-0 The Nuggets won 50 games last year but gave up 107 points a game
(second highest in the league). Will that go down now that forward/center Marcus
Camby is on the Clippers? This may be too low for Denver but they have serious
question marks at point guard and center. Nene needs to earn his massive
contract in Camby's absence. Is Jamaal Tinsley really a trade target?

1 Los
Angeles Lakers 0-0 On paper they're the team to beat with center Andrew
Bynum finally healthy to join guard Kobe Bryant and forwards Pau Gasol and Lamar
Odom. Other than losing big man Ronny Turiaf (who left for Golden State), the
Lakers are returning almost the exact same roster that got six games into the
NBA Finals. Coach Phil Jackson has some serious rotation questions to resolve -
specifically moving Odom from starting power forward to either the three or even
the one - but depth is a Laker strength.

2
Boston Celtics
0-0 From HOOPSWORLD's last ranking (6/28/08) - "Obviously there are some
concerns that James Posey might leave. He was the one bench player on the squad
that truly made the difference against the Lakers in the NBA Finals. That's a
guy you've got to bring back." Boston aficionados might not agree - but can any
of their newcomers bring it like Pose on the big stage? The Celtics won't get
fat on their success - remaining in excellent position to defend their title.

3
Detroit Pistons
0-0 For a moment it sounded like the Pistons were going to rebuild but in the
end they just swapped out Coach Flip Saunders for Michael Curry. There's a
tendency to sleep on Detroit but they won 59 games last year. Kwame Brown will
help but not as much as the Pistons would like.

4
New Orleans
Hornets 0-0 Did the Hornets play above their heads last year or are they
legitimately part of the elite? Boston's loss is New Orleans' gain in role
player James Posey. The key will be maintaining health for a squad that
historically had trouble staying on the court - that is, until last year's
stunning breakout.

5
Houston Rockets
0-0 Houston is the big climber. As always, the worry is durability - center Yao
Ming has struggled to stay on the court and guard/forward Tracy McGrady already
has some shoulder issues. Before landing forward Ron Artest, the Rockets were
already a powerful defensive unit. Artest has a few personality quirks but he
loves playing for Coach Adelman. In a contract year, he should be a serious
boost in Houston.- and shouldn't be a problem in a contract year.

6
Cleveland
Cavaliers 0-0 Cleveland only won 45 games last year but the roster was in
flux with contract hold-outs and a major trade. The summer acquisition of point
guard Mo Williams will help, giving the Cavs a little more offensive balance.
Regardless, the team's success rides firmly on the shoulders of forward LeBron
James. The Cavaliers are built for playoff

basketball but
should have a better regular season than they did a year ago.

7
Utah Jazz 0-0
As great as the Jazz were at home (37-4), they were a poor road team (17-24). If
they want to return to the Western Conference Finals and beyond, they'll need to
find a way to win games consistently outside of Salt Lake City. Sometimes having
multiple players in contract years (forward/centers Carlos Boozer and Mehmet
Okur - forward/guard Kyle Korver) can hurt a franchise but the Jazz are
well-disciplined. The Northwest Division should be theirs for the taking.

8
San Antonio Spurs
0-0 The absence of forward/guard Manu Ginobili for the first two months of the
season is obviously a serious concern. San Antonio looked older in the playoffs
but it's easy to forget they advanced to the Western Conference Finals. Incoming
guards Roger Mason, George Hill and Salim Stoudamire should have the chance to
develop in Manu's absence. If Ginobili can return truly healthy, the

Spurs will have a
chance to continue their "title every other year" crusade.

9
Phoenix Suns
0-0 The Suns are playing on borrowed time as the clock winds down on some of the
most celebrated players of the past two decades. Center Shaquille O'Neal, point
guard Steve Nash, forward Grant Hill and the rest should have enough for another
50+ win season. The bigger question will be the transition from Coach Mike
D'Antoni to the more conservative Terry Porter.

10
Orlando Magic
0-0 Center Dwight Howard didn't overwhelm on the international stage but in the
NBA he's still an absolute beast. The Magic have shooters and

athletes - and the
continuing dilemma at the point. Jameer Nelson doesn't have as much support
behind him as he did a season ago. Orlando needs Nelson to bring it every night

NBA: Sunday Training Camp Scoop

By:

Joel Brigham

Training Camp Injuries

Several teams
across the league are seeing guys get hurt during early practices,
putting fear into a lot of fans' hearts before the season even
starts. The Dallas Mavericks for example already have lost Jason Kidd
and Josh Howard for stretches at recent practices, and the Chicago
Bulls have had issues with Joakim Noah's eye and sprained ankles for
Thabo Sefolosha and Aaron Gray.

And these are
just the first that come to mind—several teams are seeing sprained
ankles and twisted knees and other minor lacerations. If we didn't know
any better, we'd assume teams were going to start dipping into their
NBDL teams to put enough guys on the floor for the start of season. But
don't fret, folks. These guys are going to be fine.

From now until
the season starts, there really is no reason to take any chances with
guys who get hurt, even though those injuries are minor. By the time
the season starts, most rosters will be at full strength ready to roll.

Tinsley Deal Still Looming

The latest from
HOOPSWORLD's Travis Heath is that several league sources expect the
Jamaal Tinsley-to-Denver deal to be consummated in the next few
days. The Nuggets keep saying that nothing is imminent, and Chucky
Atkins and Steven Hunter have still been attending practices, but
people around the league keep insisting it's going to happen.

Considering
people in Colorado are still bent out of shape about Marcus Camby being
shipped away for literally nothing, it would be nice to see Denver pick
up the point guard they need so badly without having to really give
anything up. Nothing is done yet, though, but we should have a
definitive idea in the next few days.

Pistons Finally Pick Fifth Starter

It's not that
this a huge surprise, but Pistons head coach Michael Curry has named
Amir Johnson as the team's fifth starter. Several weeks ago the team
made it clear that former starter Antonio McDyess would be heading back
to the bench to open up a starting spot for one of the team's
burgeoning young post players.

While Johnson has
long been considered the likely candidate to fill that role, the drama
involved came from the possibility that Jason Maxiell would be the new
starter. Seeing McDyess and Maxiell on the bench, along with potential
breakout guard Rodney Stuckey, gives the Pistons one of the deepest
teams they've had in years.

Happy Time in the NBA

About 90% of the
articles you're going to read in the newspapers over the next few weeks
are going to be disgustingly optimistic. This is not a time when you're
going to hear a lot in terms of trade rumors because most organizations
are comfortable with what they've currently got heading into the
season. Instead, we're all talking about possibilities and mumbling
optimism—the only time all season when fans of all thirty teams have
hope. You never know what time will be surprisingly excellent, and
which team will be surprisingly bad. Now is the time to enjoy the hope,
folks. We get started for real in just a few weeks!

NBA: Top Six Centers

By:

Tommy Beer

There was a time, not too long ago, when the NBA paint was a far
scarier place. There was a time when All-NBA First and Second teams
were populated by names like Olajuwon, Ewing, Robinson, and O'Neal.
Nowadays, with Shaq on his last legs, guys like The Dream and Diesel
are dinosaurs. Nonetheless, there are some talented young bigs out
there that are trying to revolutionize the game in their own unique
way.

One of the tricky aspects of putting a list like this together is
debating which players qualify as "centers" and which players are
classified as "power forwards." So, for purposes of classification,
let's go with the NBA league headquarters' decision. When they create
All-Star ballots and mail-out All-NBA Team voting slips, they list
certain players at certain positions. Technically, they attempt to
list each player at the position they regularly play. For instance,
although Timmy Duncan is a back-to-the-basket seven-footer, he is
officially listed as a forward; whereas Amare Stoudemire has been
listed as a center. So, instead of wasting time debating taxonomy,
let's go with the NBA's official categorization and move on from
there…

Also, for ranking purposes, I am determining this list by asking
myself the following question, "If I were an NBA GM and I could choose
any center in the NBA to build my team around this season, whom would I
choose and in what order?"

With that preamble out of the way, let the debate begin:

*****

1. Dwight Howard – Orlando Magic: Simply
stated, D Howard is the most dominant, impressive, physically-freakish
center to come into the league since Shaq. The numbers Howard posted
last season, at the tender age of 22, are simply astonishing. He
averaged 20.7 points per game (while shooting 60% from the floor), a
league-leading 14.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks. He recorded an NBA-high
69 double-doubles, including eight 20-20 games. As a point of
comparison, Shaq never averaged 14 boards a contest in a given season.
In fact, since 1980, there have been only three other players in the
NBA to have averaged over 14 rebounds and 20 PPG in the same season:
Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Howard isn't
nicknamed Superman just because he put on a costume in the Dunk Contest
last year; he just happens to be that good. Actually, the scary part
is that Howard may just be Superboy at this stage of his development.
What kind of numbers will be put up when he develops a full complement
of dependable low-post moves? Or if he ever starts making free-throws?
He has improved exponentially every year he has been in the league;
what level will he ascend to in 2008-2009? One last note on Howard, he
has never missed a game in his four-year NBA career (continuing on the
superhero theme – should we also call him Ironman?). When choosing
between players to build your franchise around, durability is obviously
a major concern. Thus, the combination of sheer athletic ability,
proven production, talent, and toughness makes Dwight Howard the clear
choice.

2. Amare Stoudemire – Phoenix Suns: Amare
is the highest scoring center in the league and is coming off an
extraordinary season, arguably the best all-around campaign of his
career - proving that STAT is all the way back. He finished fifth in
the league in scoring (25.2 PPG), and of the top 18 scorers in the
league, he was the only player to shoot above 50% from the floor. (He
ended the season shooting an astonishing 59%) Yes, playing with Steve
Nash in Phoenix's up-tempo offensive system likely inflates his
impressive statistics, but if you stuck Amare at center (he will play a
lot of PF with Shaq in town now) in any NBA city, he would be a
beast.

3. Yao Ming – Houston Rockets: When he is
healthy and playing at his best, Yao is as good as any big man in the
League. The problem for Yao has been staying on the floor. He once
again missed a healthy chunk of the 2007-2008 season, marking the third
consecutive campaign in which Yao has missed at least 25 games. He is
now averaging just 53 games played per season since 2005. Again, when
feels good and is on his game, he is incredibly efficient (over 50%
from the floor and 85%) and undeniably effective (a consistent 20/10
guy). But Yao's propensity for injuries is one of the main reasons why
he finds himself at #3 on this list.

Next Tier –

4. Pau Gasol – Los Angeles Lakers: After
the top three centers listed above, there is a steep drop-off. The
steady Gasol checks in at number four. Pau will likely play more power
forward with Bynum in the Lakers lineup, but he did a solid job manning
the middle for LA last season. With career averages of 18.8 points,
8.6 rebounds, and over 3 assists, Gasol doesn't typically dominate, but
he is multitalented and remarkably consistent.

5. Marcus Camby – Los Angeles Clippers:
Camby won't score much, but he definitely patrols the paint, cleans the
backboards, and protects the basket. Camby, fresh off winning the
Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2006-2007, produced a statically
startling '07-'08 campaign. He averaged over 13 rebounds, 3.6 blocks,
1.1 steals, and even dished out a 3.3 assists per game for good
measure.

6. Al Jefferson – Minnesota Timberwolves:
Minnesotans are still getting over the loss of Kevin Garnett, but
having Al Jefferson locked-up long term has to soften the blow a great
deal. T-Wolves fans were excited about Jefferson heading into last
season, but even the most ardent optimist had to have been pleasantly
surprised with just how well Big Al played. In fact, he was the only
player in the entire league last season to average over 21 points and
11 rebounds per game. Moreover, he was also one of only three players
in the Association to average over 21 PPG and shot at least 50% from
the floor (Carlos Boozer and Amare were the other two.) Already one
of the best bigs in the business, Jefferson, at just 23 years of age,
has the potential to be a special, special player. If we recreate this
list next summer, Big Al will likely rank much higher.

Honorable Mention:
Emeka Okafor - Charlotte Bobcats: Taken just after
Dwight Howard in the 2004 draft, Okafor has been solid, if
unspectacular, through his first four years in the league. Emeka has
dealt with the injury bug and has seen his scoring hover below 14 PPG
since scoring over 15 points his rookie season. But last year, Okafor
played in all 82 games and this summer was rewarded with an enormous
contract extension. The potential to be a dominant center is there, we
shall see if Emeka takes that next step.

Chris Kaman – LA Clippers: With Elton Brand
sidelined last season, Kaman put the Clips on his back and came out of
the blocks on fire. His pre-All-Star break numbers were just
ridiculous - 16.4 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. However, Kaman
succumbed to injury and only played in 11 games over the second half of
the season. With Marcus Camby by his side in '08-'09, Kaman will look
to prove his production last season wasn't a fluke.

Tyson Chandler – New Orleans Hornets: After the
Chicago Bulls basically gave up on him and essentially sold him to the
Hornets, Chandler has experienced a career resurgence running alongside
Chris Paul in New Orleans. Last season, Tyson was one of just four
players in the NBA to average over 11 points and 11 boards. He also
shot 62.3% from the floor, second only to Andris Biedrins.

Andrew Bynum – LA Lakers: Giving Bynum an honorable
mention nod is a speculative selection, as we don't know if a healthy
AB shows up this season. However, over the first few months of the
'07-'08 season, Bynum's emergence, and at times dominance, was
startling. He averaged nearly 15 points and 11 rebounds (while
shooting 65.6% from the floor and blocking 2.3 shots per contest) in
the 25 games he started prior to injuring his left knee in January.
Any time a 20-year-old center can post those kinds of numbers, the
league will take notice. Lakers fans are hoping Bynum is the real deal
and from the looks of it, he has spent his time off in the weight room…

Rasheed Wallace – Detroit Pistons: One of the most
underrated players in the NBA, Wallace's versatility from the center
position is remarkable. Yes, 'Sheed racks up plenty of technicals, but
he also stuffs the stat sheet. Last season Wallace was one of just
four players in the NBA to average at least 1 steal, 1 block, and 1
three-pointer made per game – the other four were LeBron James, Danny
Granger, Shane Battier, and Rudy Gay.

NBA: Top Six Power Forwards

By:

Travis Heath

HOOPSWORLD
continues its look at the top players at each position as the season
draws closer. Today, the power forward position will be examined.

Power forwards in today's game take many
different forms. Some possess perimeter skill sets, while others
dominate in the post with their backs to the basket. This makes
evaluating the four-spot a unique challenge.

Please keep in mind this list will feature your
friendly neighborhood columnist's prediction of the six power forwards
who will have the best seasons in 2008-09, and is not necessarily a
list of the six "best" power forwards in the game today (although there
is admittedly some overlap).

With that understanding, here's a look at the
players HOOPSWORLD believes will have the best season at the power
forward position in 2008-09.

6. Chris Bosh - Toronto Raptors

With Jermaine O'Neal in the fold and Jose
Calderon signed to a long-term deal, Bosh is set up to have a great
season. His versatility offensively and his mobility on both ends of
the floor will be on full display this season since he will not have
the burden of carrying the entire load in the pivot. The Raptors will
be a fun team to watch and could make some noise in the East. If
everything goes right, it wouldn't be a shock for Bosh's name to be a
part of the MVP conversation. Even if that doesn't happen, expect Bosh
to have a career-year in 2008-09.

5. Amare Stoudemire - Phoenix Suns

There was some doubt as to whether or not
Stoudemire would ever be the same player after he underwent
microfracture surgery in 2005. Fortunately for Stoudemire, he appeared
to hit his stride again last season. While he may have lost a little
bit of spring in his leg, he's still a monster for any defense to try
and contain. He's also a solid rebounder and can at times very much
intimidate opposing offenses with his shot-blocking ability. It
remains to be seen whether or not the Suns' championship window has
officially shut as many prognosticators believe, but Phoenix will be a playoff
team next season. The fact Stoudemire will be running with Steve Nash,
still one of the best point guards in the game, virtually ensures
another big season for "STAT."

4. Carlos Boozer - Utah Jazz

This is a player who often gets left out of the
discussion of best forwards in the game today. Boozer has been very
good since arriving in Salt Lake City. The fact he has the ability to
opt out of his deal and cash-in big next summer should provide even
more motivation for him to perform this season. Boozer is very good
offensively and can score from mid-range and on the box. He may be the
best forward in the game today at using his off-hand to score around
the rim, which often puts defenders a little off-kilter when trying to
defend him. With Deron Williams running the point again next season,
expect Boozer to get a ton of easy baskets on the break and off of the
pick-and-roll thus ensuring he will again be one of the most productive
forwards in the game in 2008-09.

3. David West - New Orleans Hornets

For my money, West is the most underrated player
in the Association. Last season, he got some much deserved recognition
after being named a Western Conference All-Star. Even so, it seemed
many people still chalked up a great deal of his success to the play of
Chris Paul. There's no doubt Paul is amazing, but West's performance
is more than just a simple bi-product of playing next to Paul. West
often extends defenses because of his ability to hit the 17-foot jumper
and can also score inside with his back to the basket. It's easy to
forget he also averaged 8.5 rebounds per-game last season, too. He was
great last season and will be even better in 2008-09.

2. Kevin Garnett - Boston Celtics

Despite coming to play every single night for
over a decade, many fans failed to give Garnett his due mostly because
he had never won a title. After one season in Boston, that all
changed. While teammate Paul Pierce has been busy proclaiming himself
the best in the world, Garnett has been training hard and mentally
preparing himself to lead the C's to another title. Garnett's passion,
focus and commitment to the defensive end of the floor completely
transformed the Celtics
last season. Expect Garnett to once again be the unequivocal leader
for a Boston team that will have a fantastic chance of winning the
Eastern Conference again next season.

1. Tim Duncan - San Antonio Spurs

With all due respect to Karl Malone, Tim Duncan
is the best power forward who ever set foot on a NBA basketball court.
Unfortunately, he never seems to get the credit he deserves because of
his non-flashy and business like approach to the game. Make no mistake
about it, though, Duncan is one for the ages. Sure his career averages
of over 21 points and 11 rebounds might not floor folks, but Duncan is
so much more than numbers. Every year Duncan is healthy is a year the Spurs
have a legitimate shot at winning a championship. Since entering the
league in 1997, Duncan's Spurs have won four titles. And despite the
fact he will turn 33 on April 25th, Duncan is still performing at a
high level. Moreover, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich always seems to
find a way to make sure Duncan is fresh come playoff time. Assuming
he's healthy, Duncan will average his 20 and 10 and the Spurs will have
another very good shot at bringing home title number five in the Duncan
era.

Honorable Mention

Elton Brand - Philadelphia 76ers:
Brand looked remarkably sharp during the last couple weeks of the
season after returning from a torn Achilles. If he continues that
trend and returns to his pre-injury form, Brand could be one of the
best forwards in the game next season for Philly. If everything comes
together, Brand's Sixers could win the East.

Dirk Nowitzki - Dallas Mavericks: It's
easy to forget this guy was the league MVP just a couple of years ago.
He's in the prime of his career and remains one of the most unique
scorers in the game today with his 7-foot frame and outstanding outside
shooting ability. Dallas fans are hoping new coach Rick Carlisle will
pump some new life into Dirk and the Mavs. If he does, Nowitzki could
easily be in the MVP discussion once again next season.

Pau Gasol - Los Angeles Lakers: Pau
earned the nickname "Gasoft" during his time in Memphis with the
Grizzlies. While Gasol will never be a power player, he certainly was
very good after arriving in Los Angeles before the trade deadline last
season. If Gasol is your number one guy, you're in trouble. But
playing next to players like Kobre Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom should ensure Gasol has perhaps the best overall season of his career in 2008-09.

Rasheed Wallace - Detroit Pistons: Sheed is kind of like the Manny Ramirez of the NBA.
When he's focused, he can absolutely dominate games on both ends of the
floor. When he's not, though, things can become a circus. If he comes
to camp in shape, keeps his head on straight during the regular season
and maintains his focus once the playoffs commence, Wallace could help
lead the Pistons to another title. On the other hand, Sheed could end
up being traded by the deadline if he gets off to a slow start.

LaMarcus Aldridge - Portland Trail Blazers: Aldridge
split time between the four and the five last season. This season,
though, Aldridge will probably see more minutes -- and quite possibly
the majority of his minutes -- at the four as the season progresses.
As such, it was impossible to keep him off this list. He made huge
strides last season and has the chance to develop into an All-Star in
the very near future. He can score inside and out and rebound the
ball. Playing in the high-post, he should be a very nice complement to
Oden this season and for many seasons to come.

On Monday we took a look at the top six point guards the NBA has to offer, and judging by the reaction every basketball fan out there has their own list that is worth talking about. Without
any further ado, I bring to you HOOPSWORLD's Top Shooting Guards.

It is worth mentioning that the shooting guards
in the NBA are the most dynamic players on the court and most times are
looked upon to carry their teams in clutch moments.

Here are the rankings...

6. Kevin Martin - Sacramento Kings

After averaging 23.7 points per game a season
ago, Kevin Martin has established himself as one of the best shooting
guards in the NBA. It is no accident Martin has emerged as a superstar
for the Kings due to his sharp shooting ability and elusiveness on the
court last season. With Ron Artest shipped off to the Houston Rockets in a trade, this Kings team is now all Martin's to lead. That huge
responsibility should bring about great results from the fifth-year pro.

5. Michael Redd - Milwaukee Bucks

Considered by many as one of the most underrated guards in the NBA, Michael Redd has been a solid sorer for the Milwaukee Bucks
in his seven seasons in the NBA. Playing in 72 games last season,
averaging 22.7 point a night, Redd shined once again as a bonafide
threat every time he touched the basketball. His big play abilities
earned him a spot on the gold medal U.S. National team where he
contributed off the bench. Coming off a great summer, Redd will look
for another stellar season and another shot at being an All-Star for
the Eastern Conference.

4. Tracy McGrady - Houston Rockets

Healthy or not Tracy McGrady is still one of the
best guards in the NBA. With Yao Ming going down in the second half of
last season with an injury, he was able to show the world that he was
still a big-game player. Leading the Houston Rockets to the playoffs in
a tightly knotted Western Conference, McGrady averaged 27.0 points per
game last season and was a legitimate contender for the NBA MVP award.
McGrady has taken a lot of criticism for not winning in the playoffs,
but the way he plays the game with great effort makes him an invaluable
asset for his team.

3. Allen Iverson - Denver Nuggets

Who said Allen Iverson has lost a step or is
slowing down as a player? Well if "The Answer" has slowed down it did
not show last season. In his eleven seasons in the NBA, Allen Iverson
has consistently been one of league's best guards every season since
entering the league. Last season, Iverson took a back seat to teammate
Carmelo Anthony as the go-to guy on offense, but in crunch time head
coach George Karl did not hesitate to put the ball in Iverson's hands.
This season should be no different for Iverson as he will once again be
one of the league's top guards.

2. Dwyane Wade - Miami HEAT

Not one of his better seasons since entering the NBA, Dwyane Wade only played in 51 games for the Miami Heat last season due to nagging injuries. After playing this summer for the
gold medal U.S. National Team and showing his dominance, it is safe to
say Wade is due for a big year for the HEAT. With playing alongside
Shawn Marion this season and rookie Michael Beasley, Wade is set for
another All-Star campaign.

1. Kobe Bryant- Los Angeles Lakers

Hands down the best shooting guard in the NBA, Kobe Bryant
proved that in his MVP campaign a season ago and this past summer
playing for the U.S. National team. Bryant was dominant for the Los
Angeles Lakers,
leading his team to the top spot in a very competitive Western
Conference. Bryant's ability to take on double-teams, to find the open
teammate or make big shots in the final seconds of close games is what
makes this eleven-year pro the best overall player in the NBA.

Honorable Mention

Brandon Roy (Portland Trail Blazers) & Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks): Easily
could eventually be in the top six and in a year or two they both may
be near the top of the list, but for now this duo should be considered
as on the rise. Having the consistency is key when being considered one
of the best at your position and both Roy and Johnson are starting to
show that genuine attribute.

Manu Ginoboli - San Antonio Spurs:
Considered the best sixth man in the NBA, Manu Ginoboli's speed and
electrifying skills have earned him respect by the opposition and is
considered one of the NBA's best shooting guards.

Richard Hamilton - Detroit Pistons:
Always a consistent and reliable player, Richard Hamilton has turned
himself into one of the NBA's best players especially in clutch
moments. His tough nose defense and mid-range game makes Hamilton a
handful on a nightly basis.

Ray Allen - Boston Celtics:
Even though Ray Allen averaged 15.6 points per game last season, he is
still looked upon as one of the best shooters in the NBA.

Vince Carter - New Jersey Nets: Vince Carter is not the same player that made a living doing 360 dunks while playing for the Toronto Raptors at the beginning of his career. But overall he is still a big time scorer who can erupt on any giving night.

NBA: Top Six Point Guards

By:

Preetom Bhattacharya

With
the season so near, it's time to look at the impact players at each
position on the basketball court. That's exactly what HOOPSWORLD will
be doing this week – looking into our ever-so-powerful crystal ball to
see which players at which positions will have the greatest impact on
their teams (both on the court and on fantasy island).

Today, it's the point guards' turn.

First, though, something worth mentioning: point
guards aren't what they used to be. There's been a movement in the NBA
towards point guard play that emphasizes the lead guard's ability to
not only set the table for those around him, but to also score when
asked to. Although the "pure point guard" still exists, most on this
list are the "pure point guard" plus so much more.

The bottom line for a point guard, though, is to
lead his team to bring victories to his squad. With that out of the
way, on to the rankings ..

6. Chauncey Billups – Detroit Pistons

When the Detroit Pistons put Chauncey Billups on
the block this summer, plenty of squads had interest in him, but the
Pistons couldn't find a package to their liking. Since signing a big
contract, Billups has lost some of the luster on the "Mr. Big Shot"
reputation he developed, but there's no doubt that the team has seen
tremendous success under his steady leadership. Despite supposedly
declining abilities, Billups still averaged 17.0 points and 6.8 assists
per game last season and shot .448 from the field and is poised for
another steady year with basically the same numbers.

5. Baron Davis – Los Angeles Clippers

When healthy and motivated, Baron Davis is one
of the most awe-inspiring athletes in the world. He's strong. He's
quick. He's brash. He's thoughtful. Unfortunately, Davis' career has
been marred by both injuries and playing for teams that haven't been in
contention. But Davis is coming home now, which should push him to push
as hard as he ever has to play through injuries and position in the
standings. It'll be a lot to ask Davis to once again play 82 games and
score 21.8 points and dish out 7.6 dimes again this season as he did
last – he doesn't have the same weapons around him (Monta Ellis,
Stephen Jackson), but he'll get serious recognition as an All-Star if
he can make something of a run with the Clippers.

4. Deron Williams – Utah Jazz

One of the best young guards in the league,
Williams' growth before everyone's eyes has certainly justified his
high draft pick ahead of Chris Paul. They're not the same player –
Williams is bigger and a better outside shooter and worked better in
the very structured offense the Jazz employ. Williams and Carlos Boozer
have brought the Jazz back to prominence in the Western Conference with
Williams averaging a double-double with 18.8 points and 10.5 assists
per game and Boozer doing his part in the paint.

3. Tony Parker – San Antonio Spurs

It's weird – Tony Parker doesn't get the respect
he deserves. Maybe it's because there's a hesitation to call him great
because he plays with a Hall of Fame big man or a jealousy because he's
married to a super hottie or just some sort of nationalistic disdain
for Europeans (Frenchman, in particular). In any case, Parker's game
easily makes him one of the best point guards in the NBA. Off the
dribble, there isn't a more lethal player in the NBA (although Monta
Ellis is close) and his ability to get creative and do unconventional
things around the basket to score is impressive and incredibly
entertaining. Parker must continue to expand his game beyond his
quickness, though, specifically improving upon his outside shooting.
But, as one of the criteria for a point guard was laid out above, there
hasn't been a point guard that parallels the success Parker has helped
bring to the Spurs.

2. Chris Paul – New Orleans Hornets

Surprise! It's easy to say that Chris Paul is
the best point guard in the league now, but that's definitely one of
those "what have you done for me lately" moments. There's no doubt that
the dynamic guard can do anything on the court – averaging 21.1 points,
11.6 assists, and 2.7 steals per game last season (at the ripe age of
23) and there hasn't been a team that has improved in the win column
more than Paul's Hornets. But anointing him the best in the league for
a few years of success is a bit premature – there's no doubt that he's
going to get better and unseat the man ahead of him on this list, but
where Paul goes from here is essential to seeing where he'll rank as
time goes forward. Paul has all the tools to be not just the best point
guard in the league, but the best player in the league – he's quick and
he's smart, but he must remain healthy (there are some durability
concenrs) and must continue to get better (especially his outside
shooting). The only reason he isn't number one on this particular list
is because the guard ahead of him has had a more prolonged success and
is poised to surprise people this year by bringing success to a team
that many will sleep on.

1. Steve Nash – Phoenix Suns

Anyone else forget about this guy? The two-time
MVP has largely been forgotten because the Suns seem to have fallen off
the map a little bit, but there isn't a better lead guard in the NBA
even though Paul is closing in on this title very, very quickly. When
it comes to leading an offense, though, there hasn't been anyone over
the past few years in the NBA that has been better and Nash is still on
top. Nash has been hampered by injuries, specifically in his back and
shoulder, but he still goes out and is tremendously productive, to the
tune of 16.9 points and 11.1 assists per game last season. He still is
shooting above 50 percent from the field, above 90 percent from the
line, and almost 50 percent from three-point range. He's not the same
player he was a few seasons ago (age does tend to do that), and it'll
be a challenge for him to integrate Shaquille O'Neal into the offense
this season, but there's no one more capable and smart to do that.
With an aging Shaq, a budding Amare Stoudemire, and nice role players
in Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa, Matt Barnes, and Grant Hill, the Suns
will be good again and it's all going to be because of Nash because
he's the straw that stirs it all for them and will keep the team
together. Nash's quickness has tapered, but he's still a formidable
offensive foe in the league and will find a way to get things to work
again in Phoenix this season, which should surprise a whole bunch of
people around the league.

Honorable Mention

Gilbert Arenas - Washington Wizards: The
only reason he's off the list is because he's always injured and it's
tough to say exactly how successful the Wizards can be with him
consistently in the roster.

Monta Ellis - Golden State Warriors: Out for the beginning of the season and the de facto point
guard for the Warriors, Ellis is arguably the most efficieint perimeter
player in the league .. but he's not really a point guard, is he?

Rafer Alston - Houston Rockets: Honestly,
this guy is under the radar more than any point guard in the league.
When Houston went on their streak last season, there weren't many lead
guards playing better in the league.

Andre Miller - Philadelphia 76ers: Seeing
what Philly did last season without a bona fide superstar was
impressive and Miller was the cog that made that machine really work.
With Elton Brand headed to Philadelphia, Miller will be able to set the
table for many weapons and will serve as the lynchpin for the team's
success.

And with that .. LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!

NBA: Western Conference Franchise Players

By:

Jason Fleming

Every
team has one player who is the face of the franchise. Often this player
also happens to be the best on his team, but not always. He is the
player the coach talks to first about any issue, the player management
may consult on possible roster moves, the one in the locker room after
a game the local media congregates around because you have to get his
sound bite, the player the fans think of first when talking about their
team.

A couple weeks back we looked at the Eastern Conference, now HOOPSWORLD takes a look at the Western Conference and picks the franchise player for each team.

Dallas Mavericks – Dirk Nowitzki

Nowitzki didn't fit this role at first, but as
his game has expanded so has his impact on all parts of the franchise.
On the court he is an All-Star and MVP, but off the court he is also
the one player everyone wants to talk about every possible issue. On
any other team Jason Kidd would fill this role, but Nowitzki is so
established as a Maverick he's only second. We do know, though, it's
not Josh Howard.

Denver Nuggets – Carmelo Anthony

Whether he embraces it or not Anthony is the
face of the Denver Nuggets. At times it hasn't been positive, but for
the most part Anthony has grown and learned from all of his adverse
situations. It's surprising for a team that also boasts Allen Iverson
to not have Ivy as the franchise guy, but by the time Ivy came in
Anthony was already the man. Still, it's probably a case of 1 and 1A in
this case for Anthony and Iverson.

Golden State Warriors – Monta Ellis

Seeing your player you just gave $60 million to
go down with a devastating ankle injury of questionable origin, and
then seeing his name on this list, probably isn't a good thing. With
Baron Davis gone Ellis was supposed to take the franchise player
mantle, but the injury could change things. Question: if not Ellis,
then who?

Houston Rockets – Yao Ming

Tracy McGrady is a fantastic player, but the Rockets go as Yao goes. They can win games
if McGrady misses his customary 20, but without Yao they will struggle
mightily as evidenced last year after the legendary winning streak came
to an end. McGrady isn't indispensable, but they can cover for him.
With Yao there is no cover.

Los Angeles Clippers – Baron Davis

This should be Elton Brand, but he's now in
Philly. With Corey Maggette in Golden State it's a changing of the
guard with the Clips and the veterans on this team – like Cuttino
Mobley and Chris Kaman – just aren't franchise-worthy. That's why Davis
is the pick, because after he turned around the Golden State Warriors
there is evidence he can have that same kind of impact – on and off the
floor – for Coach Mike Dunleavy and the Clips.

Los Angeles Lakers – Kobe Bryant

It would be easy to wax poetic on why Kobe
Bryant is a franchise player, but if this really needs any
explanation…I can't help you.

Memphis Grizzlies – Rudy Gay

It's hard to say who is the best young talent
the average NBA fan doesn't get to see – is it Gay or Sacramento's
Kevin Martin? On a team where he was overshadowed a bit last year with
the continual talk of Mike Miller's status, Gay quietly put together
the second-best sophomore season in the league. Now, with Miller in
Minnesota, Gay will be this team's leader as O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley
acclimate themselves to NBA life as starters.

Minnesota Timberwolves – Al Jefferson

It's a tough call with the Wolves. The
aforementioned Miller is the veteran, but he's new to the team. Randy
Foye is a solid floor leader. But, Jefferson is the big money player,
the leading scorer, and the one player who could possibly replace the
gigantic legacy left behind by Kevin Garnett. The Wolves, like a few
teams on this list, have had a lot of turnover recently and their
franchise player is still getting used to the role.

New Orleans Hornets – Chris Paul

What, you were expecting Tyson Chandler or David
West? No disrespect to those two outstanding talents, but Paul is this
team's leader on and off the court. He pushes the offense, keeps
everyone in line, takes full responsibility when the team loses, and
shares appropriately when the team has success. In three short seasons
Paul has become one of the best players in the NBA, and he's already
one of the league's great people.

Oklahoma City Thunder – Kevin Durant

This is a big role for a sophomore to fill, but
it should be old hat by now to Durant. Why? Because he filled the same
role as a rookie. By filling in for the traded Ray Allen (sent to
Boston for Jeff Green and Wally Szczerbiak) Durant has learned what
it's like to be focal point of the media, of defensive schemes, and of
national attention as the NBA's Rookie of the Year. As he continues to grow the future looks bright for young KD.

Phoenix Suns – Steve Nash

The Suns boast two future Hall of Famers in Nash
and center Shaquille O'Neal, plus they also have devastating scorer and
rebounder Amare Stoudemire. Still, it is Nash who runs the show, who
keeps people in line, and who helped – with ex-coach Mike D'Antoni –
architect the fabled "seven seconds or less" brand of offense. Because
of the size of Stoudemire's ego this will be Nash's team as long as he
wears purple and orange.

Portland Trail Blazers – Brandon Roy

Perhaps, in the long run, center Greg Oden may
have a lot to do with whether or not this team wins a title, but
Brandon Roy is the man in charge. His teammates respect him, the
coaching staff and the front office listens to him, fans love him, and
he has embraced every single aspect of being a true team leader.

Sacramento Kings – Kevin Martin

With Ron Artest now in Houston Martin will be
able to show everyone what a truly efficient first-option player can do
on the floor. However, he's not a rah-rah guy and he's not the outgoing
type to be a vocal leader. Trouble is, neither is anyone else on the
Kings, unless you count Brad Miller. Will Martin grow into the role?

San Antonio Spurs – Tim Duncan

Attempts to make cases for Tony Parker and Manu
Ginobili are certainly possible, but they wouldn't hold much water.
Outside of Kobe Bryant in L.A. Duncan is the closest to a sure thing
franchise player out there. He may not be as young as he used to be and
he may have a lot of miles, but Duncan is indisputably a team leader
and respected by opponents, coaches, teammates and media all across the
league. Oh yeah, and he's also a two-time NBA MVP, three-time NBA Finals MVP, has four NBA championship rings and is a 10-time NBA All-Star. Those are the kinds of things that make a franchise player.

Utah Jazz – Deron Williams

No doubt Carlos Boozer is a fantastic player and
the Jazz would sorely miss his service should he opt out of his deal
after this season and then leave the team as a free agent, but no
player is more important to Utah's success than Williams. Coach Jerry
Sloan's favorite target early in his rookie season (that's not a good
thing), Williams is eminently coachable, an excellent leader, and not
as far behind Chris Paul for the title of best young point guard as
some may believe.

Those are our picks - do you agree? Would you
have picked someone else? Leave a comment with your choice for a given
team and tell us why you would have picked Greg Oden over Roy, Amare
Stoudemire over Nash or Tracy McGrady over Yao.
