First of all, Happy New Year everyone. I realize this is the first time I’ve chimed in here on SLAMonline in the 09, so let’s get the good wishes out of the way. After going home for Christmas, I took a few days off and washed ashore on a Carribbean isle, which was nice, even if Khalid immediately pointed out I didn’t get any sun — hey, just because I’m at the beach doesn’t mean I have to be on the beach.

The other night, Wifey asked me if I have a vote in the All-Star voting. At first I said No, because she meant did I get a vote in the same way I get to vote on the NBA’s end of season awards. But then I realized that yes, I do have a vote in the awards — we all get to vote!

First of all, happy holla-days to everyone out there. It’s late the night after Christmas, and I’m here at the computer, typing away. And what a Christmas Day it was, with a collection of great games. The main event, Boston and L.A., tipped in L.A.’s favor. This doesn’t mean the Lakers are suddenly absolved from losing in the NBA Finals, but it should provide some measure of relief and, perhaps, revenge for the Lake Show.

ATLANTA — Last night, I went down to Philips Arena to see the Oklahoma City Thunder lose to the Atlanta Hawks. As a Hawks fan, I’d looked forward to this game for a few days. The Hawks could use the win, and the Thunder generally oblige every other team in the L.

Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but things done changed around here today. Your boy Ryne Nelson (a.k.a. our online editor) and the rest of the SLAM crew have been working behind the scenes for a minute to overhaul SLAMonline, and it’s finally happened. Well, happening, I should say, because even as I type this, Ryne and Susan are on the horn with the designer going over things that need tweaking. And yes, there are things that need to be tweaked.

A friend of mine sent me this and I thought it was worth posting…pretty remarkable work by whoever edited this thing together.
(BTW, I’m not trying to hate on Kanye here. I like his music, like his new album a lot. And so maybe he does sample rather heavily. Whatever. Dude’s talented.)

A few weeks ago, a few minutes after the defending champion Celtics barely squeaked by the Hawks in Boston — you know, the game where the Hawks were missing two of their best players, had two other players in foul trouble all night — and then celebrated as though they’d dominated the 1996-97 Bulls, I got a text from a friend, a Hawks fan, with a simple query:

Let me begin by apologizing for not having a comment for each team (and being two days late). I’m writing this week’s Dirty Thirty from the road and internet access is a little spotty. I should have a post later tonight, however, that will make up for the lateness of the hour.
