Pac-10: End of Season Notes & Wrap Up

The Pac-10 season closed with the OREGON STATE Beavers claiming the postseason title in the College Basketball Invitational. It's the 19th postseason crown all-time for the Pac-10 (15 NCAA, 3 NIT, 1 CBI)... For the first time in Pac-10 history seven or more teams won 20 games, while it's also the first time nine or more teams finished the year with a record of .500 or better... With Oregon State's participation in the CBI, All Pac-10 teams have now participated in postseason play over the last two years... Nine different Pac-10 teams have competed in the NCAA Tournament over the past two seasons. It was the third consecutive year and fourth time overall that the Pac-10 had a record-tying six teams participate in the NCAA Tournament.

 


PAC-10 NOTES...


ARIZONA:
The Wildcats ran their NCAA postseason appearance streak to 25 consecutive seasons, the longest active streak in the NCAA... Arizona named Sean Miller head coach on April 6, 2009... Juniors Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill have declared for the NBA draft and will not return for their senior seasons. Both players earned first team All-Pac-10. Budinger averaged 18.0 points and 6.2 rebounds, while Hill tallied 18.3 points and 11.0 rebounds and became the first Arizona player since 1978-79 to average in double figures in both points and rebounds in the same season.... Junior G Nic Wise averaged 15.7 points, which was sixth in the Pac-10, giving the Wildcats three players among the top six scorers in the Pac-10. The trio (Budinger, Hill, Wise) has tallied 1,799 of the Wildcats' 2,529 points scored - that's 71.2 percent of the offense... Wise will evaluate his status for the NBA draft, but has decided not to hire an agent in order to retain his eligibility... Should Wise return, he will be joined by returning starters sophomore F Jamelle Horne (6.8 ppg/5.1 rpg) and freshman G Kyle Fogg (6.1 ppg/2.5 rpg).


ARIZONA STATE: The Sun Devils posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1980-81. ASU stayed in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' rankings all season for the first time in school history. It peaked at No. 14 and fell to No. 24 in the AP poll, but never fell out... Sophomore G James Harden was a consensus All-America selection. Harden, who averaged a league-leading 20.1 points and was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year, declared for the NBA draft and will not return next season... Senior F Jeff Pendergraph led the nation in field goal shooting. He shot 198-300 (.660) from the floor, the best mark by a Pac-10 player since Todd MacCulloch of Washington led the nation at 66.2 percent in 1988-99. He also played in a school record 126 games... ASU's 60.5 ppg allowed this year is the fourth-best in school history and best since the 1949-50 team gave up 59.8 ppg... Junior G Derek Glasser earned 2009 Pac-10 All-Tournament honors by averaging 13.7 points in the three games and shot 16-of-31 (.516) from the field, 5-of-11 (.455) from the three-point stripe and had 12 assists and just four turnovers while averaging 37.3 minutes per game. With 393 career assists, Glasser already ranks seventh on the school's all-time list and is just 61 short of matching the school record of 454 set by Bobby Thompson (1983-87)... Returning starters with Glasser (8.8 ppg/4.8 apg) include sophomore G/F Rihards Kuksiks (10.3 ppg/3.8 rpg/93 3FG ) and sophomore G Ty Abbott (7.1 ppg/4.0 rpg).


CALIFORNIA: Junior G Jerome Randle led the Bears and ranked second in the league averaging 18.3 ppg. He also shot 46.3 percent from three-point range in guiding the Bears to a team record-setting 42.7 percent from beyond the arc. That figure led the nation this season... The Bears will return four of five starters for next season that accounted for 55.5 ppg... Randle and junior G Patrick Christopher earned All-Pac-10 honors. Christopher was 12th in the league, averaging 14.5 ppg. On Feb. 5 vs. Washington, both Randle and Christopher scored the 1,000th point of their careers, and the players are moving up the school's all-time scoring chart (Randle 20th 1,184 points; Christopher 25th, 1,154 points)... Junior F Theo Robertson (13.1 ppg/3.9 rpg) was second in the Pac-10, shooting 48.7 percent from three[-point range... Junior F Jamal Boykin (9.6 ppg/6.4 rpg) is Cal's fourth returning starter... Head coach Mike Montgomery became the third consecutive Cal coach to win 20 games in his first season at the helm.


OREGON: Junior G Tajuan Porter (15.4 ppg) returns as the career active leading scorer in the Pac-10 with 1,435 points, which currently places him tied for 12th on the schools all-time list. Porter's 279 career three-points rank sixth all-time in the Pac-10 and are three shy of matching the Oregon career record of 282 set by Orlando Williams (1991-95).. Coach Ernie Kent became the school's all-time victory leader, passing former Duck coach and Hall of Fame member Howard Hobson (212-124, 1936-47). Kent's record stands at 219-157 in 12 seasons with the Ducks... The Ducks return all but two student-athletes for the 2008-09 season. Returning players accounted for 2,000 or 2,088 points (95.8 percent). The Ducks had eight freshmen on the roster that combined to score 864 of 2,088 points (41.4 percent). Three of the freshmen - G Garrett Sim (6.8 ppg), F Drew Wiley (4.4 ppg) and F/C Josh Crittle (3.6 ppg/3.3 rpg) appeared in all 31 games. Freshman F Michael Dunigan (8.4 ppg/4.6 rpg) played in 29 games with 24 starts... The five returner starters for the Ducks include Porter, Dunigan, Sim, junior F Joevan Catron (7.2 ppg/6.6 rpg), and sophomore G LeKendric Longmire (9.9 ppg/3.7 rpg).


OREGON STATE: The Beavers finished 18-18 on the season and captured the College Basketball Invitational postseason championship by knocking off UTEP in a best-of-three series... The 18 victories are the most by an Oregon State team since the 1990 squad finished 22-7 and won a share of the Pac-10 title... Oregon State shot 46.7 percent and ranked sixth in the Pac-10 and 46th in the NCAA. In fact, the 46.7 percent is the highest field goal percentage for Oregon State since the 1992 season... The Beavers return four starters for next season - junior F/C Roeland Schaftenaar (10.5 ppg/4.0 rpg/3.3 apg), junior G/F Seth Tarver (8.0 ppg/5.4 rpg), junior F Daniel Deane (5.3 ppg/4.1 rpg), and junior G Josh Tarver (3.9 ppg/1.7 rpg). Overall, the team returns 87.7 percent of their scoring... Sophomore G Calvin Haynes came off the bench to lead OSU in scoring at 13.0 ppg... The Beavers ranked third in scoring defense, allowing 63.3 ppg. That's the lowest points allowed average for the Beavers since OSU led the Pac-10 in scoring defense at 63.0 ppg during the 1987-88 season.


STANFORD: The Cardinal posted 20 wins for the second consecutive season and were perfect against non-conference foes during the regular season with a 11-0 mark. Stanford's appearance in the CBI postseason tournament ran its streak to 16 consecutive postseason appearances. The Cardinal have played in the postseason in 21 of the last 22 seasons. Coach Johnny Dawkins is the first coach in Stanford history to post 20 wins in his first season... Senior G Mitch Johnson finished his career with 534 assists. That's good for second in the Stanford record books, trailing only Brevin Knight (780)... Senior G Anthony Goods led the Cardinal in scoring (16.2 ppg). He's the seventh different Cardinal to lead the squad in scoring over each of last seven seasons... The Cardinal return two starters for next season - junior F Landry Fields (12.6 ppg, team-leading 6.6 rpg) and sophomore F Josh Owens (6.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg).


UCLA: The Bruins posted their 45th 20-win season, and made their 43rd NCAA Tournament appearance ... Freshman G Jrue Holiday (8.5 ppg/3.7 apg/3.8 rpg) announced that he would make himself eligible for the NBA draft but will not hire an agent at this time in order to maintain his NCAA eligibility... UCLA has been ranked in the top 25 in the AP poll for 75 straight weeks (since the 2005-06 preseason) and in the Coaches Poll for 77 straight weeks (since 2004-05 final poll), which is the longest streak in the nation... Seniors Alfred Aboya and Darren Collison set a Pac-10 record for most games played in a career with 143... Senior G Josh Shipp finished his career with 1,734 points, which places him 12th on UCLA's all-time scoring list... Should Holiday return, he and junior F Nikola Dragovic (9.4 ppg/4.3 rpg) are the only two returning starters for the Bruins.


USC: The Trojans captured their first Pac-10 Tournament title... The Trojans made their school-record third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and posted a record third consecutive 20-win season... Junior G Daniel Hackett, junior F Taj Gibson and freshman F DeMar DeRozan have declared their intentions to enter the NBA draft. However, at this date, Gibson and DeRozan have not hired agents and may pull their names out of consideration for the draft... Gibson averaged 14.3 ppg and a team-leading 9.0 rpg. He tallied 100 blocked shots this season (2.9 bpg) and established a school record with 253 rejections. That figure ranks third all-time in the Pac-10... Should each of the aforementioned players enter the draft, that would leave junior G Dwight Lewis as the lone returning full-time starter. Lewis led the Trojans in scoring 14.4 ppg, which ranked 15th in the Pac-10... Freshman Leonard Washington made 13 starts and averaged 6.1 ppg and 4.2 rpg.


WASHINGTON:
The Huskies captured their first Pac-10 title since sharing the crown with USC in 1985. It was the first outright title for the Huskies since taking the Pacific Coast Conference title in 1953... It was the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons for Washington... Senior Jon Brockman completed a storied career as he posted 1,805 points and 1,283 rebounds during his Husky career. His total rebounds are a school record and rank fourth all-time in the Pac-10... Freshman G Isaiah Thomas was tabbed the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after posting a team-leading 15.5 ppg... The Huskies led the league in scoring (78.6 ppg) and rebound margin (+8.2)... The Huskies return three starters in Thomas, junior F Quincy Pondexter (12.1 ppg/5.9 rpg) and freshman F Darnell Gant (3.1 ppg/3.3 rpg).


WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars hired Ken Bone as head coach on April 6, 2009... The Cougars led the league for the sixth consecutive season in scoring defense. The nation-leading 55.4 points per game allowed was the lowest total in the Conference since Oregon State allowed 55.4 points during the 1966 season... The Cougars also led the league in free throw percentage (76.9 percent) and set a Pac-10 single-game record with a perfect 28-of-28 vs. Oregon (Jan. 17)... The Cougars return two starters in All-Pac-10 freshman G Klay Thompson (12.5 ppg/4.2 rpg) and junior G Nikola Koprivica (3.1 ppg/2.4 rpg)... Freshman F DeAngelo Casto (4.4 ppg/4.0 rpg) set a WSU freshman record with 39 blocked shots (1.2 bpg), which ranked fourth in the Pac-10... With its NIT appearance, the Cougars have now played in the postseason for three consecutive seasons (two NCAA appearances, one NIT appearance), matching the feat accomplished from 1994-96 (two NIT appearances, one NCAA appearance).
