DAYTON, Ohio – Creighton overcame a 13-point halftime deficit, but could not survive the heroics of Dayton senior Monty Scott in a 60-54 loss to the Flyers on Wednesday night. The win improves UD to 7-1, while Creighton fell to 3-2 with the loss.
CU was held to a season-low 19 points in the first half, plagued by 7-of-23 (30.4 percent) shooting. Anthony Tolliver had eight rebounds at the break, while Nate Funk had six points to lead the Jays at intermission. UD was paced by 11 points from Brian Roberts, who drained all four of his field goal attempts.
Trailing 32-19 at the half, Creighton unleashed a 15-2 spurt to open the second half. Funk had five of those points, while Dane Watts and Isacc Miles each drained three-pointers during the run. Miles’ trey knotted the score at 34-34 with 15:04 to play.
Scott hit a barrage of big shots for Dayton down the stretch. His first trey came with 7:01 to play and gave UD a 49-43 lead. His next trifecta came after blocking lay-up on the defensive end and then sinking the trey at the 3:38 mark and extended the Flyer lead to 52-46.
Scott added to his dramatics with a pair of circus shots in the ensuing possessions as the shot clock wound down. His jumper with 2:46 left made it 54-48, and his back-breaking trey with 1:08 to go gave UD a 57-50 lead. Creighton got within four in the closing seconds, but missed three late three-point attempts.
Funk with 15 points, while Tolliver had 13 points. Nick Porter added nine points and five rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Tolliver also grabbed 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double. The 13 boards matched a career-high.
Dayton was paced by 13 points from Scott and Norman Plummer. UD shot 48 percent for the game.
