Derrick Rose: NBA Draft Profile

February 17th, 2008

Derrick Rose

College: Memphis

Class: Freshman

Position: PG

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 190lbs

Accolades: First Team USA Today All-USA – high school (07), First Team Parade All-American (07), McDonald’s All-American – high school (07), Illinois Mr. Basketball – Chicago Tribune – high school (07), All-State – Illinois – high school (07 & 06), Fourth Team Parade All-American – high school (06), Third Team Parade All-American – high school (05).

Scouting Report: The best point guard prospect in this year’s draft.

Strengths: Off-the-charts athlete – NBA athleticism. Is lightning quick on the court. Explosive leaper who can attack the rim. Fantastic one-on-one moves – killer crossover, shake-and-bake moves. Great ball handler. Can beat any defender off the dribble and knife into the heart of the defense to create for teammates or score on his own. Can hit difficult shots over defenders. Quick on defense and can be a tough defender. Strong physique with good body control. Good rebounder for a point guard.

Weaknesses: Still very young and inexperienced, especially for a point guard. Will take time to learn to run the offense for an NBA team. Not a lot of range on his jumper – hits less than one three-pointer a game in college. Can take questionable shots at times. Playing in Conference USA he didn’t get to go up against NBA prospects on a nightly basis. Despite some highly-touted point guard prospects, Coach Calipari has never produced a top-tier NBA point guard.

Projected 2008 Draft Range: Second overall pick.

Consensus: Athletic point guards like Rose don’t come around everyday, so depending on how the rest of the season and the pre-draft workouts pan out, he very well may go first overall. His package of skills and athleticism should make him a star at both ends of the floor in the pro game. With all due respect to Jalen and Malik, Derrick should very easily become the best Rose to bloom in the NBA’s history.
