Games of the Night: Tennessee at Vanderbilt

February 26th, 2008
A companion to our daily Three Stars of the Day, we present the top three Games of the Night.

#1 Tennessee (25-2) at #14 Vanderbilt (23-4)

9:00 PM ESPN

Everybody seems to have jumped on the Tennessee bandwagon.. and rightfully so, the Vols not only have a 24-2 record, but their 8-1 record against Top 50 teams is the best in the country. But a road trip to Nashville is never easy, and the Commodores are no pushovers: The #10 RPI team hasn't lost at home all season. The last time these two teams met, Tennessee won big behind a monster game from Wayne Chism. Vandy simply couldn't hit a shot that night, but things will definitely even out this time around. The Vols are the safe pick.

Prediction: Tennessee

#25 Brigham Young (21-6) at New Mexico (22-6)

10:00 PM

New Mexico's won 6 games in a row to slowly move back into NCAA Tournament consideration. Impressively three of those games were on the road, including wins over solid teams like San Diego State and Utah. With home games against MWC leaders BYU & UNLV on tap, this is UNM's time to solidify their spot in the field. The reality is that though UNM has a great record, their RPI of 45 is mediocre, the SOS is weak, and they haven't beaten a Top 50 team all year. This is finally their chance to get a big win, and there's no excuse not to win at home. The home team is the pick, but I actually like BYU as 4.5 point dogs.

Prediction: New Mexico

Southern Illinois (16-12) at Bradley (17-12)

7:00 PM ESPN2

SIU's record doesn't look particularly good, but they definitely still have a chance to squeeze in as an at-large team. The Salukis have a quality RPI, great SOS, and three wins over Top 50 teams.. which is more than many bubble teams. Despite those nice numbers, SIU still has to take care of business and win games.. especially on the road where they've been dismal (2-9). Despite the fact that Bradley has a better overall record, has won 9 of 11 games, and is playing at home.. the Braves are slight underdogs.

Prediction: Bradley
