Games of the Night: Texas A&M at Texas

February 18th, 2008

Games of the Night

A companion to our daily Three Stars of the Day, we present the top three Games of the Night.

#16 Texas A&M (20-5) at #11 Texas (21-4)

9:00 PM ESPN

The Aggies put a beating on Texas when the teams met in College Station, A&M's only true big signature win of the year. Since then, Texas has won 5 straight to move back into the conference title race.. but they've done so despite horrible shooting by star DJ Augustin. It was perhaps that game against A&M that started Augustin's slide, and things are only getting worse. He's only hit 8 of his last 38 threes (21%).. and even worse, just 15 of his last 68 shots (22%). He's bound to turn it around sometime..

Prediction: Texas

#13 Xavier (21-4) at Rhode Island (20-5)

7:00 PM

This is arguably a better game than the one above, since the better team is on the road and the spread is closer (1.5 points in XU's favor.) Rhode Island has an impressive RPI of 26 and is most likely on its way to the Big Dance. But they still need more wins, especially after a disappointing OT loss to Temple earlier in the week. A win over Xavier would be their true signature win, trumping victories against Dayton, Providence, Syracuse, and UAB.

Prediction: Rhode Island

Syracuse (17-9) at Louisville (20-6)

7:00 PM ESPN

Louisville has won 5 straight and may very well be in the Top 25 when the polls are released later today. The Cuse are obviously coming off the big win over Georgetown, but still have work to do to make the big dance. This continues a rough stretch of games for the Orange, with Notre Dame and Pittsburgh following the Cardinals. Syracuse hasn't won a big road game in a couple years.. so I don't see any reason why that trend should end. Cardinals win big.

Prediction: Louisville.
