Hofstra Signs Pair of NYC Products

April 26th, 2007

Hempstead, NY * Guard Devon Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lincoln HS) and forward Darren Townes (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center HS/Globe Institute of Technology) signed national letters of intent with the Hofstra Men's Basketball team during the spring signing period, it was announced today by Head Coach Tom Pecora.

Peterson and Townes join swingman Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie HS) and power forward/center Dane Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Robeson HS/Mt. San Jacinto College), who signed with Hofstra during the early signing period, to give Hofstra a four-member class of New York City-based recruits.

Peterson, a 6-2, 175-pound combo guard, guided Lincoln to a 24-6 record and a
New York state title this past winter. He scored 23 points in the New York state championship game victory over Rice in Glens Falls, N.Y., and was named to the All-Tournament team. He led Lincoln to a pair of Public School Athletic League (PSAL) championships during his career, and recently teamed with Lester on the City team at the Jordan All-Star Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Townes, a 6-7, 210-pound power forward, helped the Globe Institute of Technology to a 25-4 record this past winter. He nearly averaged a double-double, tallying 9.5 points and 9.8 rebounds for GIT while shooting 57 percent from the floor. He played scholastically at Manhattan Center High School, and was rated among the top New York City prospects by Hoop Scoop.

Lester capped off his stellar high school career by helping Canarsie to the PSAL Semifinals this past season, including a 30-point performance in Canarsie's semifinal loss to Peterson's Lincoln squad. Lester averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds a game this winter in the PSAL. Johnson, meanwhile, helped Mt. San Jacinto College to an 18-14 record this winter after overcoming knee surgery.
