NBA Draft: Mike Conley Jr.
College: Ohio State
Accolades: Honorable Mention All-American – AP (07), First Team All-Freshman Team – CHN (07), All-Final Four Team – CHN (07), Second Team All-Big 10 – coaches (07), Big 10 All-Freshman Team – coaches (07), First Team All-Big 10 – media (07), All-Big 10 Tournament Team (07), McDonald’s All-American – high school (06), Parade All-American – high school (06), First Team All-State – AP – Indiana – high school (06), Second Team All-State – AP – Indiana – high school (05).
Scouting Report: A lightning quick floor general.
Strengths: Mature and poised beyond his years – both on and off the court. A big time winner – won at every level he has played at so far. Blazing speed – can blow by his man in the half court or lead the charge on the fast break. Very smart player. Ability to finish with both hands – jump shots, layups and floaters. Takes very good care of the ball – great assist to turnover ratio. Use speed and quick hands on defense to snare tons of steals. Good rebounder for his size. Shoots for an extremely high % for a guard – 51.8%. Has three-point range on his jumper.
Weaknesses: Needs to add some size and strength for the NBA – currently would be undersized for the League. Needs to improve his three-point accuracy – shot for only 30% his freshman year. Despite big games under his belt is still inexperienced – NBA teams may be nervous to hand the point guard duties to a 19 or 20 year old. Not a super explosive leaper.
Projected 2007 Draft Range: Lottery pick.
Consensus: Conley had a better freshman season than many expected. He was the on court leader for the Buckeyes and played very solid in the NCAA tournament. Still, he could use at least another year in college under his belt to work on his game and body, and to get used to playing without Greg Oden on his team.
