NBA Draft: Rudy Fernandez
Team: DKV Joventut
Accolades: Spanish National Team, FIBA Euro Cup MVP (06), FIBA World Championship Gold Medallist – Spain (06).
Scouting Report: A great athlete able to shoot from outside and slash to the hoop.
Strengths: Experienced for a young player – plays in one of the top domestic leagues in Europe (ACB in Spain) and in the second best league in the world behind the NBA – the Euroleague. Already has played 4 full seasons in the ACB league, despite only turning 22 years old this year. Shoots for an extremely high percentage for a guard (currently shooting 56% in the Euroleague). Can knock down the outside shot consistently (48% for 3-pointers currently in the Euroleague). Is athletic enough to drive to the hoop also. Great free throw shooter. Good rebounder for his size. Showed off his great athleticism and basketball instincts playing for gold medal winning Spain in this past summer’s FIBA World Championships.
Weaknesses: Needs to get stronger physically – only weighing 170 pounds will get him hammered in the NBA. Defensively he will have to work the hardest on his game - not used to guarding NBA quality guards (big and athletic).
Projected 2006 Draft Range: Late lottery to mid first round pick.
Consensus: Fernandez’s experience, both in the highly competitive pro leagues in Europe and as a member of the Spanish National Team, will make him more prepared for the rigors of the NBA than your average 22 year old draft prospect. Once he gets his body stronger and gets used to the NBA style of ball, he should be a keeper and could be a star.
