Tuesday Recap: Middle Tennessee Evens the Score

With the first matchup between Belmont and Middle Tennessee going to double overtime the rematch on Tuesday was expected to be just as tight. Sure enough the game didn't disappoint, with the Blue Raiders locking up the 65-62 win with a pair of blocked shots in the final 22 seconds. LaRon Dendy led the way for Middle Tennessee with 20 points, and the Blue Raiders haven't reached the ten-win mark in a season this fast since 1990-91. Belmont outscored Middle Tennessee 33-9 in points from beyond the arc but they couldn't get that 12th three-pointer they needed to take the lead or tie late, which is a testament to Kermit Davis' team.

"We are an athletic team, we're long around the rim," said Davis. "But the last two plays, to block perimeter shots, those were unbelievable competitive athletic plays because the way Belmont shot it tonight you just felt if they got a good clean look they were going to make it."

The Bruins really couldn't get much of anything going in the first half, shooting just 33.3% and turning the ball over eight times to go into the locker room down 34-25. On the other side Middle Tennessee executed efficiently on offense, assisting on 11 of their 13 made baskets and shooting 52.0% from the field. But as expected, Rick Byrd's team made a run thanks to their ability to knock down perimeter shots. Belmont made seven of twelve three-pointers and took their first lead since 2-0 with 10:01 remaining on a Kerron Johnson layup. But despite the Belmont run and poor foul shooting Middle Tennessee didn't fold, earning them the win to even the season at one victory apiece.

"We are 32-60 against them at the line," said Davis. "Marcos Knight, one of the toughest players I have ever coached, he missed three even though he felt good about them. LaRon had his struggles, but he steps up and makes some timely free throws."

While the focus of many has been Belmont's chances of earning an at-large bid should they not win the Atlantic Sun, there could be something special brewing in Murfreesboro. Middle Tennessee's now 10-2 on the season, and next Wednesday's game at Ole Miss is more than winnable for the Blue Raiders. But the free throw shooting has to improve if they're to be a championship team in the Sun Belt. But they rank second nationally in field goal percentage (53.2%) and the Blue Raiders have been solid defensively as well. With a three-pronged scoring attack leading the way, Middle Tennessee can have a special 2011-12.

"We understand what's ahead of us," remarked Davis. "Ten wins in the non-conference is a great feat, we are off to a great start, and gives us a chance to have a terrific year."

Other Notable Happenings

1. Florida Atlantic only has themselves to blame for their loss at Mississippi State.
Speaking of Sun Belt teams struggling to make free throws, there's the case of Mike Jarvis' FAU Owls, who made just seven of eighteen from the charity stripe in their 75-68 loss at Mississippi State. Raymond Taylor scored 20 points off the bench for the Owls but the fact that FAU made just two of eight from the foul line in the second half proved costly. By comparison Mississippi State made 17 of 22 from the line, taking advantage of the points many expect to be "free" the way winning teams should. Rodney Hood, who has to be considered one of the top freshmen in the SEC, scored 19 points and grabbed ten rebounds for the Bulldogs and Dee Bost led all scorers with 22 points, but the shot that can't be defended was the difference.

2. Could a dagger be the catalyst Jordan Taylor needs to get back on track?
After a Milwaukee basked with 1:10 remaining cut the Wisconsin lead to 55-52 there was little doubt who would take the big shot for the Badgers. Senior point guard Jordan Taylor, who was coming off of an 0-for-10 outing against UNLV and made just three of eleven two-pointers on Tuesday night, was going to be the guy no matter what. And as All-Americans do, Taylor came up big by knocking down a three from the top of the key to make the score 58-52 with 41 seconds to go. Jared Berggren led the way in the 60-54 win with 17 points and nine rebounds, but that shot may be just what the doctor ordered for Taylor with regards to getting back on track. He's shooting just 36% on the season, more than seven points below last season's mark (43.3%), but the road back begins with that first step.

3. A strong second half propels Villanova to a win over Boston University.
The first half of Villanova's game against Boston University and former VU assistant Joe Jones wasn't a pretty one, with the Wildcats shooting just 18.2% and trailing 26-23 at the half. The Wildcats missed their final 16 shots of the half, and frankly guys didn't look confident in what they were doing on that end of the floor. But whatever Jay Wright, or even the players themselves, said in the locker room at the break had a major effect as the Wildcats rolled to a 68-43 win. Villanova made 14 of 19 two-points shots in the second half and Dominic Cheek got things rolling with 11 points while the Terriers could never get going offensively (17 second-half points). Cheek may ultimately be the key for the Wildcats if they're to reach the NCAA Tournament, meaning that his percentages (38.8% FG, 28.8% 3PT) have to improve. Villanova's relying on a number of young players, be it in terms of games played or the importance of roles, so it's going to take some time. But the second half was a good sign of what Jay Wright's team could be capable of.

Quick Hitters

1. Washington will be without the services of center Aziz N'Diaye for the next 2-3 weeks due to a sprained knee. N'Diaye isn't much of an offensive presence but the Huskies will need to account for his team-best 8.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Desmond Simmons figures to be the player most likely to see a jump in minutes, but Martin Bruenig and Shawn Kemp Jr. will likely be called upon as well.

2. Marquette has been hit hard by the injury bug of late, with Chris Otule (knee), Juan Anderson (shoulder) and Jamil Wilson (ankle) all suffering injuries over the last week or so. Wilson will be the first to return but Anderson will be down for a while and the severity of Otule's injury (suffered against Washington last week) still isn't known. That means more opportunties for Davante Gardner, who scored 14 points in Saturday's win over Green Bay.

3. After struggling in his first two games back from injury, the Chris Fouch many expected to see for Drexel may be back. Fouch followed up a 23-point performance against Princeton with 24 in the Dragons' 71-58 win over Niagara on Tuesday night.

4. After winning ten games all of last season, Wyoming's already reached that mark in their first season under Larry Shyatt. While a SOS that currently ranks 301st in the country has to be noted, it's also fair to point out that the Cowboys have improved their field goal percentage defense by nine percentage points from a season ago. Wyoming beat UC Irvine 58-48 Tuesday night.

5. Despite out-rebounding Point University 48-29 Alcorn State needed two overtimes to beat the new NAIA member 106-101, which had been competing at the NCCAA level prior to this season. Alcorn State is 2-7 on the season but have yet to defeat a Division I opponent. It could be a long year in Lorman.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Jaylen Bond (Texas)
The freshman put up 18 points (9-12 FG), 12 rebounds and two assists in the Longhorns' 93-40 pasting of Nicholls State.

2. G Rodney Hood (Mississippi State)
One of the top freshmen in the SEC thus far, Hood scored 19 points and grabbed ten rebounds in the Bulldogs' 75-68 win over Florida Atlantic.

3. G Marcus Jordan (UCF)
28 points and three assists in the Knights' 77-65 win over North Carolina A&T.

Thirty-Two Impact Freshmen, Part Two

After going over the teams expected to win their regular season titles, we move on to talking about the top freshmen in each conference. Will all automatically take over and become the stars of their respective teams and leagues? It's tough to say at this point in the season, but that doesn't mean that we can't discuss it. Below are the picks for final 16 conferences, and Part One can be found here.

MAC: Kris Brewer (Kent State)
The Memphis native spent last season at Brehm Prep in Illinois, and his presence will add to the options that Rob Senderoff can call upon. The Golden Flashes are expected to contend in the MAC this season due to their returnees, but the ability of a player like Brewer will help as well.

MEAC: Dwight Meikle (Hampton)
Meikle was originally expected to attend St. John's but the school released him from his Letter of Intent in April, clearing the way for Hampton to land a player who could be among the best in the MEAC. Meikle's a versatile wing who can both score and attack the glass, something the Pirates will need if they're to win the MEAC.

Missouri Valley: Christian Kirk (Missouri State)
Kirk had to sit out his senior season due to Missouri transfer rules, but there's no doubt that Missouri State gets a player who is a serious candidate for Newcomer of the Year honors. As a junior at St. Charles (MO) High, Kirk averaged 17.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Mountain West: Hugh Greenwood (New Mexico)
Big things are expected from the Australian, who many expect to slide right into the starting role left open by the departed Dairese Gary. Greenwood averaged 17.1 points per game for the Australian U-19 team at the U-19 World Championships this summer in Latvia, and at 6'3", 209 he's got the size needed to play the point with a physicality not seen in many freshmen.

Northeast: Andrew Nicholas (Monmouth)
Nicholas has the ability to step in and play right away in the first season of the King Rice era at Monmouth. Nicholas can play both forward positions and is a versatile offensive player, something the Hawks need given their offensive issues last season (averaged just 60.5 points per game).

Ohio Valley: Nino Johnson (Southeast Missouri State)
Getting the Memphis native to commit during the early signing period last season was quite the coup for the Redhawks, who get a 6'8" forward more than capable of contributing immediately. Johnson's physical tools have made him the trendy pick to be the best freshman in the OVC, and it would come as no surprise if he were to make good on the preseason praise.

Pac-12: Josiah Turner (Arizona)
The case could be made that the Sacramento native is the best point guard in the Pac-12 before playing a game in college. He's that skilled, possessing the ability to make plays for himself as well as setting up teammates for quality shots. If Turner performs at the level many expect him to, don't be surprised if the Wildcats win the league.

Patriot: Justin Burrell (Holy Cross)
The Crusaders lost their leading assist man in Andrew Beinert, which could open the door for the 5'8" Burrell. The Virginia native averaged 20.0 points, 8.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game as a high school senior and spent last year at Fishburne Military School in Virginia.

SEC: Anthony Davis (Kentucky)
Davis' upside (not going to go into the overused story of his growth spurt during high school) makes him a candidate to be one of the best players in America and not just one of the nation's best freshmen. The power forward can do a variety of things on both ends of the floor, and his play as a senior earned him a McDonald's All-America Game selection.

Southern: Adjehi Baru (College of Charleston)
With returning starter Willis Hall being lost for the season due to a torn ACL it was critical that the Cougars received some good news from the NCAA on Baru. Thursday brought that news, bolstering the frontcourt of a team expected to once again contend for the SoCon title. Baru averaged 19.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game at The Steward School in Richmond, Virginia last year.

Southland: Luke Mergerson (Texas State)
With just two starters returning the Bobcats will likely need to call on some of their nine newcomers to contribute this year. One of those players is Mergerson, who played at Duncanville (TX) High School. At 6'8", 240, Mergerson has the size needed to be an impact freshman in the Southland Conference.

SWAC: LeAntwan Luckett (Alcorn State)
Luther Riley takes over as head coach at Alcorn State with the hope being that he can turn around a program that won just six game over the last two seasons. Luckett will be a key component for the Braves, as he is a slasher who averaged just under 20 points per game as a high school senior. Luckett received offers from BCS programs but chose Alcorn, and the Braves could benefit greatly from his decision.

Summit: Matt Poches (Oakland)
Given the loss of big man Keith Benson, some may not think that Greg Kampe's Golden Grizzlies can win the Summit League again. But they will be right back in the mix thanks in large part to the number of contributors returning on the perimeter. There lies the problem for a talented player like Poches: when and how often can he get on the floor? But the freshman is athletic enough to help Oakland out if he can earn playing time.

Sun Belt: Mychal Ammons (South Alabama)
Ammons led his Vicksburg (MS) High team to a 6A state title last season, averaging 21.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game as a senior. And as Ronnie Arrow looks to rebound from a disappointing 2010-11 without four starters from that team, players such as the versatile Ammons will need to step up.

WCC: Gary Bell, Jr. (Gonzaga)
Mark Few put together a very good recruiting class and the Kent, Washington native is the centerpiece of it. Bell was the state's Mr. Basketball last year, and he also played on the same Seattle Rotary Select team as Washington freshman Tony Wroten Jr. Bell's versatility on the wing will help account for the loss of Steven Gray and allow the Zags to once again contend for a WCC title.

WAC: Shaquille Stokes (Hawaii)
It's probably a safe assumption that Stokes doesn't have issues with homesickness given the fact that the New York City native picked the furthest possible location to attend college. Stokes averaged 18.4 points and four assists per game as a senior at Lincoln (NY) High, helping lead the Railsplitters to a 29-3 record last season.

Jon Teitel's "Forgotten Legends" Series: Alcorn State's Larry Smith

In the latest installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Alcorn State great Larry Smith, who remains one of the greatest players in the history of the SWAC. Smith, who was the head coach at Alcorn since 2008, is now the Director of Athletic Development at the school.

Jon Teitel: Your nickname was "Mr. Mean". Who gave it to you, and how did you like it?

Larry Smith: I got it from our SID because I never smiled a whole lot. I am a real nice guy so the name does not fit me, but I still like it.

JT: In 1979 your team went undefeated during the regular season, including a comeback from eight points down with 1:20 to play to beat Southern in overtime on a jumper by Joe Jenkins. How were you able to pull out the win over Southern, and what did it mean to you to go undefeated?

LS: We had a great collection of talent who believed in one another and played hard each day. We had a great coaching staff and everything just fell into place for us.

1979 NIT

JT: You made a baseline jumper at the buzzer for a two-point win over Mississippi State in Starkville. Where does that shot rank among the most clutch of your career, and how big a deal was it to be the first HBCU to win an NIT game?

LS: I had not really experienced anything like that before. It was tremendous to beat an opponent of that caliber. I was blessed to go to Alcorn State and do something I loved to do: play basketball.

JT: Your team then had a four-point loss to eventual champion Indiana in Bloomington (future NBA teammate Mike Woodson scored 19 points). How close did you come to winning that game, and what was the feeling like in your locker room afterwards?

LS: We competed well but there is no consolation when you lose. It was a major contribution to show that HBCU's can compete on that level. It also opened so many doors for me, as I got to go to the Pan Am Games trials and even tour Europe.

JT: In 1980 your only regular season blemish was a three-point loss to Mississippi State. Do you think that Mississippi State was out for revenge after you beat them in the NIT, and how did it feel to be only a few points away from back-to-back undefeated seasons?

LS: We still had a talented team but you cannot make mistakes against great competition. It was a tough game and we just came up short.

JT: In 1980 you led the nation with 15.1 RPG despite being only 6'8". Did you feel like you were one of the best big men in the country, and what is your secret for rebounding?

LS: I loved to play the game and had the heart and desire to get it done. I was not a great jump shooter so I had to get to the glass to score. I did not have the most talent but I never let anyone outwork me, which I will carry to my grave.

1980 NCAA Tournament

JT: You scored 18 points and grabbed a school tournament-record 17 rebounds in an eight-point win over South Alabama. How did it feel to finally make it to the NCAA Tournament, and how big a deal was it to be the first HBCU to win an NCAA Tournament game?

LS: I thought we could beat anyone because we were a very deep team. South Alabama was a great team so after we beat them we knew that we belonged.

JT: You scored 13 points in a 10-point loss to LSU (All-American Rudy Macklin had 31 points and 19 rebounds). How close did you come to winning that game, and where does Macklin rank among the best college players you ever faced?

LS: LSU was ranked #2 at the time and Macklin had a bunch of other great players around him. We represented ourselves very well but they were so much deeper than us.

JT: You were a two-time SWAC POY. What did it mean to you to win such an outstanding individual honor twice?

LS: It was a great feeling because I had put in a lot of hard work and really believed that I had earned it.

JT: You played for College Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Dave Whitney, who made his players do pushups if they misbehaved at dinner or run laps in the middle of the night if they missed curfew. What made him such a great coach, and were you ever subject to his discipline?

LS: Whitney liked to win and he wanted guys who could compete on every possession with minimal mistakes. He made me a better player and a better person. He made me grow up as a man and become aware of things outside of basketball.

JT: In the summer of 1980 you were picked 24th overall by Golden State (one spot ahead of Jeff Ruland) despite a 1979 SI article that said, "Unless he unveils a perimeter jump shot in his senior year, it's doubtful that Larry Smith will make the pros". Did you end up developing that jump shot or was it just impossible for the NBA to ignore your rebounding skills?

LS: When I got to the pros my agent told me to keep working on my game. I knew that I had a decent jump shot but I was most valuable to the team by working on the glass. I was never a prolific scorer but I could run the floor and make shots from 12-14 feet out. We had guys like Purvis Short, World Free, etc., so there were not a lot of plays that were run for me! I knew that I would last in the league a long time by playing good defense and rebounding.

JT: You were named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 12.1 rebounds per game in your first season, including a career-high 31 boards in a loss to Denver in your home finale. How were you able to come in and contribute as a rookie, and how on earth did you get 31 rebounds in a single game?

LS: I think I had an impeccable work ethic at the time so Coach Al Attles gave me the opportunity to play. Denver was a scoring machine back then so they took a lot of shots that allowed me to get a lot of rebounds. It was great to accomplish that.

JT: In 1987 your team made it to the Western Conference Semifinals before losing to the eventual champion Lakers. What was the biggest difference between the regular season and the playoffs, and where does that Lakers team rank among the best you have ever seen?

LS: It was great to finally put it all together and make it to the playoffs. We just could not beat that Lakers team. They were tremendous and knew how to win with a great nucleus.

JT: Your career average of 9.2 rebounds per game (in only 25.9 MPG) still ranks in the top 75 all-time. How satisfied are you with your career, and do you have any regrets?

LS: I have no regrets at all; God really blessed me. I got to meet some terrific people and visit a lot of places. I think I did an okay job but I played hurt a lot because I would not let anything stop me from playing the game.

JT: You spent a decade as assistant coach with Rockets under Rudy Tomjanovich, including back-to-back NBA titles in your first two years in 1994 and 1995. Did the team see you as a "lucky charm" because they started winning as soon as you showed up, and what were you thinking when Nick Anderson missed four consecutive free throws in the closing seconds of regulation in Game 1 of the 1995 Finals?

LS: It was great to work for Rudy as he had coached me as a player, so I could not have come into a better situation. We had a bunch of blue-collar workers like Robert Horry and Kenny Smith who were very instrumental in us winning, as they did all the little things. I still cannot fathom how Nick missed those free throws because he was such a great player, so I really think it was just destiny.

JT: In 2008 you were an assistant coach for the LA Sparks of the WNBA. What is the biggest difference between coaching men and women, and where do Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker rank among the best female players you have ever seen?

LS: The women are more disciplined in what they do, as they want things to be perfect. Candace and Lisa were true professionals. Nobody worked harder than they did and they became terrific players.

JT: You had been head coach at your alma mater since 2008, but your team started 0-13 last season due to multiple Top 10 opponents and no home games. Does your coaching style change when your team is winless?

LS: We had a young team but the hardest part was that we did not get a chance to go out and recruit. When you have a coaching staff of just one assistant, you just try to make the best of it.

College Basketball Saturday Preview: Top 5 Worst Games

February is a great time for college basketball, but with 149 D1 games scheduled on Saturday, there's sure to be some duds. The games below are hideous, either due to the wide disparity in opponents or the utter lack of quality between the sides.

#25 Cornell vs Brown - 7:00
-- Brown is 5-14 against D1 competition. Meanwhile, Cornell's won their last 3 Ivy games by 36, 34, and 26. This will get ugly, real ugly.

Jackson St vs Alcorn St - 6:30
-- JSU leads the SWAC with an 8-1 record, and has won 10 of 11 games. On the flip-side, Alcorn St is a shocking 0-22 right now and 2nd to last out of 346 teams in the RPI. When first hosts worst, good things never happen.

NC Central vs Savannah St - 7:00
-- NCCU is winless against D1 teams, but have a chance to finally win one against a a Savannah St squad that's just 1-9 away from home. I'm calling a win for the Eagles here to get of the schnide..

Tennessee-Martin vs Tennessee St - 7:00
-- UTM is 0-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while Tennessee St is 1-11. If UTM doesn't win this one, they might not win a game the rest of the season (5 of their last 7 are on the road.) If they go winless the rest of the way, their lone win the entire season against a D1 team would have come against independent SIUE.

UC Irvine vs Cal State Bakersfield - 10:35
-- Irvine is 9-14 and towards the bottom of the Big West standings at 3-7. Their season, simply put, is going nowhere. Making things more meaningless is that CSB is an independent, so this game has no implications. The lone intrigue is that CSB did beat UCI at home on Wednesday, so the Anteaters may be out for revenge. But even if they win, only the most die-hard of die-hards will notice.

Poll: Who Do You Think Will Win the SWAC?

State of '08: Mississippi

Duke or Carolina? BC or UMASS? Gonzaga or Washington.. or Washington State? What is the best program in each state? While there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there are great debates to be had in loaded regions like California, North Carolina, and Texas. The State of '08 is a ranking of every program in every state.. based mostly on recent success (the last five years) mixed in with subjective factors such as conference prestige, historical success, and overall program direction.

MISSISSIPPI

MISSISSIPPI STATE - MSU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first since 2005, when they made 4 trips in a row. This year though, both Ole Miss and Southern Miss could/should be better teams.

OLE MISS - The Rebels don't have the best history when it comes to basketball. Outside of 2001's surprising Sweet Sixteen run, NCAA Tournament wins have been extremely rare. But the last two seasons have been solid under Andy Kennedy (despite last year's post 13-0 collapse), and a Tourney trip would not be a surprise in 2009.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI - Many expected a swift turnaround under Larry Eustachy, but he enters his fifth season at USM without a postseason trip. While 19 & 20 wins looks impressive each of the last two years, the win totals have been padded with joke non-conference wins against DII teams and SWAC opponents.

MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE - They've met Jackson State in the SWAC finals the last two seasons, splitting the Tourney bids. MVSU was unfortunate to face UCLA in the first round, losing 70-29, and shooting just 19% from the field.. the lowest Tournament output in over 20 years. Still, MVSU hasn't finished below .500 in SWAC play since 2000.

JACKSON STATE - JSU is coming off two solid seasons. In 2007, they made the Big Dance, knocking off legit non-conference foes (a rarity for the SWAC) like UTEP, Rutgers, and UIC. Last year they were one basket away from a return trip.. losing to in-state rival MVSU. The Tigers should once again be in the running for the conference title in 2009.

6. ALCORN STATE - It wasn't that long ago that Alcorn was one of the better teams in the SWAC, making the Big Dance in 99 & 02 for example with consistent top of the table finishes. But the last four years have been brutal, with sub-300 RPIs. The Braves haven't won a non-conference game against a D1 team since December 2004.
