Northwestern and USF Stumble Late: Thursday's Quick Hitters

It was a tough day for bubble teams in the Pac-12 as both Washington and Oregon fell in the quarterfinals.

1. Also stumbling on Thursday were Northwestern and USF, with the former being in far greater trouble at this point.
Northwestern University has never made the NCAA tournament, and with their 75-68 overtime loss to Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten tournament that could very well remain the case after Sunday. In each of the last two seasons there seems to be a moment where Bill Carmody's team needs to make one play, be it a score or a defensive stop, to get the job done but the Wildcats simply can't. The problem against Minnesota: they couldn't shoot inside of the arc.

Both teams finished the game 11-for-26 from beyond the arc, but the Wildcats squandered a 17-6 edge from the foul line (points) by making just nine of their thirty-one shots from two (29%). John Shurna scored 21 points on the afternoon but made just two of eight two-point shots, and Drew Crawford did the same while scoring just eight. If not for JerShon Cobb putting up 24 points and eight rebounds, there likely would not have been an overtime period to play.

As for USF, while many can argue with the aesthetics you really can't argue with the results, as Stan Heath's Bulls have won 13 conference games when adding their second round win over Villanova. But against a team that also plays a deliberate brand of basketball USF was unable to pick up the signature win they needed, falling to Notre Dame 57-53 in overtime in the final game of the night in the Big East Championship. Stan Heath's team looked to be in good shape late in regulation, but stunning decisions lef the door for the Irish, and USF's execution on their final possessions of overtime provided a fitting ending for a frustrating night. But unlike Northwestern the Bulls were able to win a game in their conference tournament, so they have that going for them at least.

2. Texas was one team that took advantage of their opportunity as they beat Iowa State.
It seemed to take a while on Thursday to find a team that truly took advantage of its opportunity to make a statement to the selection committee, but Rick Barnes' Longhorns didn't disappoint in the final game of the night at the Big 12 tournament. After shooting 26.3% from the field in the first half Texas shot 50% in the second, scoring 46 points to beat three-seed Iowa State 71-65 to advance to the Big 12 semis. Texas shot 54% from two and got to the foul line at a higher rate, knocking down 14 of their 17 attempts while the Cyclones could manage just four attempts.

J'Covan Brown led the way with 23 points and five rebounds while Myck Kabongo added 11 and five assists with no turnovers, and Clint Chapman was solid on both ends of the floor with ten points and eight rebounds while also helping defend Royce White. Texas should feel good about their NCAA hopes but there is the matchup with Missouri on Friday night, and a win there would provide a nice boost to their seeding as well.

3. Indiana beats Penn State but they may have lost Verdell Jones III for the remainder of the season.
Tom Crean's Hoosiers knocked off Penn State 75-58 in a Big Ten tournament game, out-rebounding the Nittany Lions 45-29 to make up for shooting just 36.5% from the field. But it may have been a Phyrric victory, as senior guard Verdell Jones III went down with that was reported to be a sprained knee during the first half. More tests will be done on Friday, but when an injury occurs like Jones' (non-contact) there isn't a very positive outlook.

Head coach Tom Crean was near tears when discussing the injury in postgame interviews, and it's easy to see why. Jones III was one of the guys who was there with Crean from the start, going through the horrible 6-25 campaign and the tough process of bringing Indiana basketball back to this point. Do the Hoosiers have the depth needed to make up for Jones' loss if he can't go in the NCAA tournament? They do, and this likely means more minutes for a Will Sheehy, but it's deeper than that. For all the work Verdell Jones III put into the program it would be fitting that he's on the floor in the Big Dance. Sadly, that may not happen.

Quick Hitters

1.
One more team was added to the NIT field on Thursday night as the
regular season champ in the Southland, UT Arlington, fell 92-72 to McNeese State.
The defense let the Mavs down as McNeese State shot 54.2% from the
field and knocked down 11 of 24 three-point shots to ensure the win.

2. Also of note in New York was Syracuse's
58-55 win over Connecticut, and for a team that's had so many answers
this season the Orange found another on Thursday. James Southerland
scored ten points off the bench and Scoop Jardine 18 as Syracuse
advanced to Friday's quarterfinal.

3. Two players their
respective teams will need to step up in the Big Dance did just that in
the Big 12 quarterfinals, as Perry Jones III put up a double-double (31
points, 11 rebounds) in Baylor's 82-74 win over Kansas State. As for the other player that would be none other than Kansas' Elijah Johnson, as he scored 26 points in the Jayhawks' 83-66 win over Texas A&M.

4.
Iowa may have brought an end to the Bruce Weber era in Champaign,
beating Illinois 64-61 in the first game of the day at the Big Ten
tournament. Matt Gatens paced the Hawkeyes with so 20 points and Aaron
White added 13 and nine rebounds off the bench. In fact it was announced that Weber will not be retained as head coach on Friday morning.

5. The game of the day may not have been artistic by any means, but that's of little concern for a Marshall
team that outlasted Tulsa 105-100 in triple overtime. DeAndre Kane led
all scorers with 40 points, and it would come as no surprise if the Herd
were to reach Saturday's title game.

6. Cal State Fullerton
picked arguably the worst time of the season to have their three-point
shot to betray them. In the Titans' 65-59 loss to UC Irvine the Titans
shot 5-for-20 from three while the Mustangs shot 10-for-22 from beyong
the arc. Chris McNealy led the way with 24 points.

7. ACC bubble teams NC State and Miami took care of business on Thursday night, beating Boston College and Georgia Tech respectively to advance to the quarterfinals. Next up for the Wolfpack is four-seed Virginia, while the Hurricanes take on Florida State in the day's final quarterfinal.

8. It wasn't the prettiest shot but all that matters is the end result, as Jamaal Franklin's three as time expired gave San Diego State a 65-62 win over Boise State in a Mountain West quarterfinal. The top four seeds all advanced and that includes Colorado State, who beat TCU 81-60 and should be safely in the NCAA tournament field at this point.

Bearcats Pick Up Needed Win: Thursday's Quick Hitters

In the game of the night Duke rode the hot shooting of Andre Dawkins and the playmaking of Austin Rivers to avenge an earlier loss to Florida State, winning 74-66 in Tallahassee.

1. The game wasn't pretty but Cincinnati did enough to beat #17 Louisville.
It went without saying that Mick Cronin's Bearcats needed another good win for their resume due in large part to their weak non-conference slate. Their contest with #17 Louisville won't be a video that basketball purists eagerly throw into the DVD player but all that matters is the result, a 60-56 Bearcat victory to move to 10-5 in the Big East. Cashmere Wright rebounded from a second half ankle injury to lead Cincinnati with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists, and the Bearcats' superiority from beyond the arc proved to be the difference. Cincinnati made 11 of their 27 shots from deep while Louisville finished 1-for-14.

Peyton Siva scored 14 points and Gorgui Dieng and Chane Behanan scored 11 apiece (20 combined rebounds as well), but the struggles of Kyle Kuric and Chris Smith were critical. Those two combined to shoot 0-for-15 from the field with Kuric missing all seven of his three-point attempts, and Louisville can't win when that happens. There's more work for Cincinnati to do to make their Selection Sunday as stress-free as possible, but beating the Cardinals at home is a good start to the stretch run.

2. Likely needing a weekend sweep to enter the bubble conversation, Colorado gets whipped at home by Stanford.
With a 13-1 home record entering Thursday's action, Tad Boyle's Colorado Buffaloes had the look of a team that would enhance its NCAA prospects by winning at home against Stanford. But the Cardinal had other plans, as they jumped the Buffs in the first half on their way to the 74-50 victory. Chasson Randle scored 20 to lead the way offensively, and Johnny Dawkins' club was able to navigate 18 turnovers by limiting the Buffaloes to 29.6% shooting. Askia Booker led Colorado with 14 points, but a look at their resume depicts a team in need of a major run to reach the Big Dance. Andre Roberson (nine points, 11 rebounds) struggled, but he found other areas in which he could attempt to have an impact.

The same can't be said for guard Carlon Brown, who shot 1-for-8 from the field and has shot 6-for-28 over the last three games. As a result of Stanford's victory the Cardinal are back in the tournament discussion, but just ilke Colorado nothing other than the Pac-12's automatic berth will get them in at this point. Next up for Colorado is Cal on Sunday afternoon, and with a national audience watching that could be the Buffs' last stand. The hope in Boulder is that they find a way to avoid the slow start that has been their Achille's heal in recent weeks.

3. Gonzaga evens the score with BYU to keep alive their hopes of a 12th straight WCC title.
Elias Harris scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 74-63 win over the Cougars, avenging their loss in Provo and moving into sole possession of second place in the WCC. Brandon Davies led BYU with 23 points and ten rebounds but it was obvious that BYU was missing something with Noah Hartsock (knee) sitting out the majority of the game due to his injury. The Cougars attempted 37 more field goals than Gonzaga (78-41) but they made just 30.8% of their shots, and making the same number of three-pointers as the Bulldogs (six) with fifteen more attempts (28-13) didn't help matters either.

Gonzaga turned the ball over 20 times but their parade to the foul line more than made up for that. Gonzaga attempted 44 free throws, making 36 and pushing the Bulldogs' total to 72 free throw attempts in two games against BYU. Gonzaga didn't have much of an answer for Davies in the post when he received the ball, but the Cougars had their issues in the second half as well. The win moves Gonzaga to second place with one league game remaining, which also means that the Bulldogs are still alive for their 12th consecutive WCC title.

Quick Hitters

1. Two more teams locked up postseason (NIT) berths on Thursday night: Belmont (Atlantic Sun) and LIU Brooklyn (Northeast). The Bruins whipped Kennesaw State 90-50 as Mick Hedgepeth and Scott Saunders scored 12 points apiece to lead four players in double figures. Jamal Olasewere scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Julian Boyd went off for 21 and 20 to lead LIU past Fairleigh Dickinson 91-80.

2. JaMychal Green didn't play but Alabama still found a way to pick up a key road win as they beat Arkansas 79-68. Andrew Steele scored 15 points and Trevor Releford 14 for the Crimson Tide, who also received 31 points from Rodney Cooper (17) and Nick Jacobs (14) off the bench. At 18-9 and 7-6 in the SEC, Anthony Grant's team will likely reach the Big Dance with a respectable finish to the regular season.

3. Long Beach State clinched a share of the Big West title and the top seed in the conference tournament, but they still aren't the outright champs...yet. Cal State Fullerton needed an Isiah Umipig three with 13 seconds remaining to beat Pacific 69-68, moving the Titans to 10-3 in league play. Fullerton is a game up on UCSB in the race for second with three games remaining for both.

4. It was the "Matt Gatens Show" in Iowa City, complete with a bobblehead given out to fans before the game, as Gatens led Iowa to a 67-66 win over #15 Wisconsin. Gatens scored a career-high 33 points, and the last player to do that against the Badgers was Stephen Curry ('08 Sweet 16).

5. Don't look now but Butler is a win away from locking up the two-seed in the upcoming Horizon League conference tournament. Brad Stevens' team won on Tuesday, and Cleveland State's 77-64 win over Detroit eliminates the possibility of the Titans winning a tiebreaker between the two. But locking up the seed will be tough, as the Bulldogs visit regular season champ Valparaiso on Friday night.

6. Isaiah Canaan scored 24 points and Donte Poole 16 to lead #12 Murray State to an 80-62 win over Tennessee State, the team responsible for the lone blemish on the Racers' record. Murray won despite being out-rebounded 33-22, but that tends to happen when a team shoots 56.5% from the field and 12-for-22 from three.

7. Also locking up a postseason berth on Thursday night was Middle Tennessee, who won 94-61 at Louisiana-Monroe to move to 14-1 in Sun Belt play. Kermit Davis' team assisted on 30 of their 35 field goals and 12 of the 15 Blue Raiders who played ended up scoring.

8. Thanks to 26 points and 14 rebounds from center Mike Muscala, Bucknell won 55-50 at American to clinch at least a share of the Patriot League title. The Bison entered Thursday's game on a two-game losing streak, which added some unexpected drama to the league race. Daniel Munoz led three Eagles in double figures with 15 points, and they now need a win and some help this weekend to wrestle away the two-seed from Lehigh.

Cal State Fullerton's Success With Transfers Paying Off

Note: The original version of this story can be read here

Last season Bob Burton's Cal State Fullerton
Titans took more than their fair share of lumps on the way to an 11-20
record. Fullerton was unable to recover from a 4-11 non-conference
record, and the fact that they were able to go 7-9 in Big West play
despite a seven-man rotation was likely an achieve unto itself. While
the Titans took their lumps in games however, they could take solace in
the fact that three very talented transfers were awaiting their chance
to take the floor. Those three first-year players, combined with
returnees who have accepted their augmented roles, are a bid reason why
Burton's Titans are two wins away from a 20-win campaign.

Kwame
Vaughn, D.J. Seeley and Omondi Amoke all arrived from Division I
programs within the state, with Vaughn showing up by way of San
Francisco while both Seeley and Amoke began their college careers at
Cal. They're now three of the top four scorers for the Titans, who have
won five straight and eight of their last nine games to move to 18-7
overall and 9-3 in conference play. In spite of the seven-win turnaround
to this point it really shouldn't be a surprise that the Titans are
having success with transfers. It's been something that Coach Burton and
his staff have been able to do for some time now.

"We're
notorious for transfers," Burton said in a phone conversation last week.
"It's a way to get top-rated players here as opposed to recruiting them
out of high school."

Given the presence of the Pac-12 and
Mountain West in southern California when it comes to recruiting, it's
not a bad strategy at all provided the guys taken in are good for team
chemistry. Fullerton's most recent NCAA tournament trip (2008) was led
by Washington State transfer Josh Akognon and their entire lineup
consisted of transfers, the lone team in that tournament able to make
that claim. But once again such strides can't be made if all parties
aren't on board, and the chemistry of this current group of Titans is a
big reason why they've played so well.

"Our number one concern
was chemistry, but it was really good that most of our returnees knew
that we needed help," noted Burton. "It's been difficult at times but
we're really together right now."

Seeley (16.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and
Vaughn (16.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.1 apg) are the leading scorers, and with
regards to Vaughn's play the ninth-year head coach pointed to
Fullerton's 73-66 loss at Cal State Bakersfield on November 26th as the
turning point. In the middle game of Fullerton's three-game losing
streak Vaughn scored a team-best 17 points but didn't tally a single
assist, and for a player being used in a point guard role something had
to give. And it isn't very often that the head coach will step up and
admit that he needed to change his approach, as Burton did with Vaughn.

"At
first we moved him to the two but after Fullerton we just let him
settle in and play," said Burton of his scoring point guard. Since that
game Vaughn has gone without an assist in just one game and he's
averaging 5.2 helpers per contest over the last five. His best game was a
37-point, six-assist effort in the Titans' 99-86 win over UCSB on
February 4th, a contest that did wonders for a program given the
national TV audience and a sold-out Titan Gym.

While Seeley's
been free to go to work on the perimeter as the Titans' primary scoring
option, Amoke's been the anchor in the frontcourt for Fullerton. The
6'7" senior is averaging 12.2 points and a team-best 8.7 rebounds per
game on the season, and he's got a 23-point, 17-rebound performance to
his credit as well (94-84 win over UC Irvine). Amoke's had help inside
as well, as one-time USF Bull Orane Chin has been a quiet, steady force
with averages of 10.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and Sedric
Martin's been able to earn more minutes in recent games.

There's
another returnee who certainly merits mention on the perimeter in
sophomore Isiah Umipig, who averaged 7.4 points and 1.2 assists per game
in 20.4 minutes of action as a freshman. Umipig has increased both his
scoring (13.6) and assist (2.4) numbers playing alongside Vaughn, and
there's no doubt that his experiences as a freshman have helped improve
his game as a sophomore. Having Vaughn allows Umipig to continue to
mature as a player, with the goal being that he's ready for more point
guard responsibilities next season.

"He'll eventually be a point
guard," said Burton of Umipig, who scored 25 points in the win over
UCSB. "He just needs to keep maturing and get better at getting to the
basket."

It's clear that Long Beach State, who is currently
undefeated in Big West play (13-0), is the class of the conference
heading into the stretch run and Coach Burton even said that in his view
UCSB remains the second-best team in the Big West (they did win the
first meeting in Santa Barbara). But thanks to their productive
transfers and all parties (newcomers and returnees alike) being willing
and able to coexist, it would be wise to keep an eye on Cal State
Fullerton down the stretch. There's enough talent at Coach Burton's
disposal for this season to go from being good to special.

Murray State Suffers First Loss: Thursday's Recap

As the streak grew longer, it seemed as if it became a foregone conclusion in the eyes of many that Murray State would simply run through the Ohio Valley Conference on their way to a Sears BracketBusters contest against Saint Mary's. Steve Prohm's head coaching career got off to a dream start, as the Racers won 23 straight games with Isaiah Canaan and Donte Poole leading the way. That run came to an end on Thursday night as the Racers fell 72-68 to a Tennessee State team that relied on balance to grab their eighth win in the last nine games.

Robert Covington led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points (and eight rebounds), scoring on a key tip-in with 1:25 remaining to give TSU a 69-65 lead. Just as important were the contributions of Kenny Moore (16 points) and Jordan Cyphers (ten points, three assists), who led a Tennessee State bench that outscored Murray State's reserves 30-10. Canaan scored 31 points to lead all scorers and Poole added ten but they were the only Murray State players to reach double figures, and their reliance on Canaan got the Racers in trouble down the stretch.

Jewuan Long's attempt to get Canaan (who was being double-teamed) was stolen by Patrick Miller and ultimately ended up in the hands of Covington, who missed both free throws to keep the score at 69-68. Canaan would drive the length of the floor before getting into trouble as he approached the foul line, ultimately turning the ball over and getting called for a foul with 3.5 seconds remaining. But if there's a question about how Murray handled their final possession (following a pair of Moore free throws), it would have to be why they attempted a length of the court baseball pass.

Why? The Racers had two timeouts remaining, and with that amount of time on the clock a play in which Murray State could complete the inbounds pass at around half court and use one of those timeouts may have been best. But hindsight is 20/20, and for a team that hasn't been in many situations like this down the stretch Murray State will get better from this.

The key: achieve better offensive balance, because while there certainly isn't a problem with Canaan and Poole being the primary options those two are going to need more consistent help. Outside of those two, Murray State shot 10-for-27 from the field, and the 18 turnovers the Racers racked up (Canaan: six) didn't help matters either. Does this outcome make the Saint Mary's game more important? From a seedind standpoint yes, due to the fact that Murray State is 3-0 against the RPI Top 100 and 12 of their 23 wins (three don't "count" in the NCAA evaluation process since they came against non-Division I opponents) are against teams with an RPI of 201 or worse.

But can someone honestly say with a straight face that Murray State, provided the wheels don't fall off, wouldn't be one of the 37 best teams should they not grab the OVC's automatic bid? Remember that bubble so many criticize (annually) for being weak? Let's step away from the ledge when discussing the at-large possibilities for Murray State, because there's a long way to go. The Racers now have the task of learning from their late-game miscues, and while this current team hasn't had to do that there's enough experience on the roster to make sure they do so.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Gonzaga not ready to hand over the WCC crown just yet.
There were many (myself included) who wondered if there was about to be a changing of the guard in the WCC on Thursday as Saint Mary's visited Gonzaga, as a win would give the Gaels a three-game lead with four to go. But the Bulldogs, who have won the last eleven regular season titles, weren't ready or willing to hand over the crown as they won 73-59. Kevin Pangos scored a game-high 27 points and three other starters reached double figures for the Bulldogs, who are now just a game behind Saint Mary's in the loss column. Matthew Dellavedova scored 20 points in a losing effort, but he shot 1-for-5 from the field in the second half and as a team the Gaels shot just 36% in the final 20 minutes.

By comparison the Bulldogs found just about any shot they wanted and knocked them down too, shooting 60% from the field (second half efficiency: 133.0) with Pangos scoring 15 of their 39 points. Robert Sacre, who wasn't a factor in the first meeting, scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who still have a home game against BYU on the schedule. Mark Few's team may not be in the driver's seat at this point, but if Saint Mary's is going to win the WCC the Bulldogs made sure it wasn't going to happen in their house.

2. As soon as we think we know who the Pac-12 frontrunner is, of course Washington gets blown out.
At this point it may be best to institute a rule stating that no one will attempt to anoint anone as the pacemaker in the Pac-12 race, because as soon as it seems like something is "known", that fact gets ripped to shreds. Lorenzo Romar's Huskies went to Eugene and got manhandled by Oregon, who raced out of the gates on an 8-0 run (all eight scored by Garrett Sim) and didn't look back until the 82-57 romp ended. Carlos Emory scored 16 points off the bench and Sim was one of three starters to score 13 points, and Dana Altman's team just looked far more prepared for what what going to happen on the floor than the Huskies.

That result dropped the Huskies into a tie for first with California, who took advantage of Maurice Jones picking up his third foul to whip USC 75-49. And just a game behind those two are Oregon, Arizona and Colorado, with the Wildcats beating the Buffaloes 71-57 thanks in part to double-doubles posted by Solomon Hill and Jesse Perry. Winners of three straight Arizona is the hottest team in this quintet, and with Utah visiting on Saturday afternoon it would be expected that the Wildcats earn the sweep. The Pac-12 needed some separation to ensure multiple NCAA bids (Cal and Arizona look to have the best resumes to date), but that doesn't seem likely to happen at this point.

3. Indiana proves to be too much for Illinois in the second half.
Illinois is a likely NCAA tournament team at this point, but they've done themselves no favors of late to say the least. The issue on Thursday night: Indiana's parade to the foul line, where they made 35 of 42 in their 84-71 win over the Fighting Illini. Illinois attempted just 15 free throws (making 12), and when a team can shoot 60% from the field and attempt 26 free throws (making 19) as Indiana did in the second half it's highly unlikely that they lose anywhere much less at sold-out Assembly Hall. Cody Zeller scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Hoosiers while Christian Watford and Victor Oladipo scored 18 apiece for a team that's won consecutive games for the first time since early January.

D.J. Richardson led the illini with 19 points and Meyers Leonard added 17, but the problem offensively for Illinois was that they essentially had three scorers to Indiana's four. Joe Bertrand and Tracy Abrams were both quiet in their starting roles, and Illinois made as many three-pointers as Indiana (seven) while attempting nine more (21-12). Indiana worked the ball inside of the arc for quality shots and it paid off, as they were frequent visitors to the foul line down the stretch. Bruce Weber's team has dropped five of their last six games, and with a trip to Michigan next on the schedule the Illini had better be careful. This isn't rock bottom, but things could spiral out of control if Illinois doesn't take care of their issues soon.

Quick Hitters

1. Minnesota
was unable to take advantage of the opportunity to add a quality win to
their resume as they fell at home to Wisconsin 68-61 in overtime.
Wisconsin didn't make a field goal over the last ten-plus minutes of
regulation but they were still able to get to the extra session, where
Jordan Taylor and company took care of the Golden Gophers. At 17-8
overall and 5-7 in league play, Tubby Smith's squad still has home games
against Ohio State, Michigan State and Indiana and they need to take
advantage of those opportunities.

2. While transfers have played
a major role in the success being enjoyed at Iowa State and Cal State
Fullerton, it can be argued that the transfer with the biggest impact is
Mississippi State's Arnett Moultrie. Moultrie scored 18 points
and grabbed nine rebounds in the Bulldogs' 70-60 win over Ole Miss, and
Dee Bost added 15 points and 13 assists. Moultrie's play has been a big
reason why Mississippi State has been one of the best teams in the SEC.

3. The Horizon League featured a matchup of the top two teams in the standings, and unfortunately for Cleveland State they couldn't get much of anything going offensively. Valparaiso
jumped out to a 22-4 lead and really weren't challenged in a 59-41 win
to take over sole possession of first place. Unfortunately for the
Crusaders however, they lost Kevin Van Wijk to a knee injury in the
first half and did not return. More should be learned about his status
on Friday, and Van Wijk being out for an extended period of time would
be a tough blow to take.

4. The race of interest in the South Division of the SoCon has
been the one for second place (and the other first round SoCon
tournament bye) thanks to the play of first-place Davidson, and Georgia Southern
took a big step towards grabbing that spot with a 63-49 win over
Wofford. The Eagles, who were led by Eric Ferguson's 15 points and 11
rebounds, moved to 10-4 in conference play while dropping the Terriers
to 8-6.

5. Guess who could be making a charge into the top three of the MAAC: Fairfield.
The Stags moved to 9-4 in conference play with a 60-54 win over
Manhattan, who sits alone in third with a 10-4 mark. Sydney Johnson's
team was expected to be Iona's toughest challenger but things haven't
worked out that way to this point. With a deep rotation led by the likes
of Derek Needham and Rakim Sanders however, Fairfield is more than
capable of winning the automatic bid.

6. The Summit League race took a turn in the wrong direction for South Dakota State
on Thursday night as they lost 72-68 at South Dakota, dropping two
games behind Oral Roberts in the loss column. The Golden Eagles beat
IUPUI 76-74 in overtime with Roderick Pearson's driving shot as time
expired being the difference.

7. With UCSB off Bob Burton's Cal State Fullerton
Titans could have taken over sole possession of second place in the Big
West and that they did, scoring 60 points in the second half of their
100-94 win over UC Irvine. D.J. Seeley and Kwame Vaughn combined to
score 51 points as the Titans won despite not having the injured Omondi
Amoke at their disposal. Long Beach State is the class of the Big West,
but Fullerton is just as capable as UCSB of knocking the 49ers off in
the conference tournament.

Three Notable Performances

1. C Ben Aird (Utah Valley)
24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in the Wolverines' 99-97 win at NJIT.

2. C Al'Lonzo Coleman (Presbyterian)
26 points (10-14 FG), 12 rebounds and two assists in the Blue Hose's
94-74 win over VMI. Coleman's shot 20-for-28 from the floor over the
last two games.

3. G Alex Young (IUPUI)
34 points, seven rebounds and two steals in the Panthers' 76-74 overtime loss at Oral Roberts.

Saturday Recap: Missouri's Finishing Kick Proves to Be the Difference

Rivalry games bring more to the table when it comes to intensity, and
that was definitely the case in the battle between #4 Missouri and #8
Kansas in Columbia on Saturday night. In a game that featured many
momentum swings and neither team leading by more than eight points, it
was Frank Haith's Tigers who landed the final blow. Kansas led 71-63
with 3:25 remaining but they would not score again, as Missouri finished
the game on an 11-0 run to win 74-71. Marcus Denmon, who entered the
game having made just 34.9% of his shots in Big 12 play, shot 10-for-16
from the field and scored a game-high 29 points to lead the way.

"He
made some tough shots," said Haith. "He got into a rhythm and when
Marcus gets into a rhythm he can rattle off a few shots in a row. And I
think at that point in time he just got in a rhythm."

But Denmon
wasn't the only star for the Tigers, with Kim English scoring 18 points
and Michael Dixon Jr. adding 15 off the bench. English received a lot
of attention from the Kansas defense due to his three-point shooting
ability but the senior from Baltimore made things happen in other ways.
The foul line was huge for the Tigers, as their shot 14-for-20 from the
charity stripe with Kansas making five of nine and being called for ten
more fouls (20-10). Thomas Robinson led the Jayhawks with 25 points and
13 rebounds, and Tyshawn Taylor added 21, but the Missouri comeback was
aided by player control fouls called on both down the stretch.

Robinson's
fourth foul with 1:45 remaining ultimately led to a Denmon three to
make the score 71-69, and Taylor's foul with ten seconds remaining led
to a pair of Dixon Jr. free throws to give Missouri a 74-71 lead. Elijah
Johnson ended up with the ball in his hands in the final seconds but he
hesitated, eventually having to put up a highly-contested shot as time
expired. Kansas played with a great deal of poise for just over 36
minutes, but when the Jayhawks needed sound execution to close out the
contest the Tigers proved to be too much.

"We definitely did it
to ourselves," remarked Jeff Withey when asked about the decisive
stretch. "We had the lead and if we would have just held onto the ball, I
think it would have been a way different outcome."

The end
result: a three-way tie atop the Big 12 with Missouri boasting a 2-0
record vs. Kansas and Baylor. Ricardo Ratliffe was quiet due to his
being in foul trouble for much of the night but others stepped up to
help the Tigers hold their own on the glass. Denmon grabbed nine
rebounds and five other players grabbed at least two as Missouri was
out-rebounded by just three (29-26) on the night. Continue to point out
Missouri's lack of size if you wish, but it should be pretty clear by
now that they've got more than enough to compete for a national title.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Memphis comes back from ten down in the second half to beat Xavier, picking up a needed non-conference victory.
There was no mistaking how important the contest between Xavier and
Memphis was for both teams with regards to their NCAA resumes, and the
Musketeers looked to be well on their way to the key win. A Dezmine
Wells three-point play with 6:16 remaining gave Xavier a 62-51 lead, but
Josh Pastner's team refused to lie down. A Wesley Witherspoon three
started a 17-1 run over the next six minutes, and Memphis would put away
the 72-68 win from the foul line (Joe Jackson hit all four of his free
throws to seal the deal). The question is which team needed the win
more, and while it was vital for both teams a look at their remaining
schedules will reveal the answer. Memphis won't have another shot at an
RPI Top 50 win the remainder of the regular season while Xavier still
has matchups with Temple and Saint Louis (both on the road) to deal
with.

2. Florida State holds off Virginia at home to remain tied atop the ACC.
Low-scoring games tend to amp up those who feel that basketball has to
be high-scoring in order to entertain, and those who took this route
missed a very good battle in Tallahassee. Okaro White scored 13 points
off the bench and Xavier Gibson added ten as Florida State won their
seventh straight game to move to 7-1 in the ACC as they beat Virginia
58-55. Joe Harris and Mike Scott scored 16 apiece to lead the Cavaliers
and Malcolm Brogdon added ten off the bench, but the struggles of Sammy
Zeglinski (2-for-7, five points) down the stretch were just one reason
why the Hoos were unable to pick up what would have been a very good
road victory. In a game that finished with 63 possessions it was Florida
State's work on the offensive glass (OR% of 34.3%) that made the
difference (12-7 edge in second-chance points). Work of art? No,
especially with the two teams combining for 39 turnovers. But it
definitely was an entertaining show that the ACC's two best defensive
teams put forth in Tallahassee.

3. Notre Dame puts it to Marquette in the second half to move to 7-3 in the Big East.
Once again Mike Brey is one of the favorites in the race for Big East
Coach of the Year, as a team that looked to be well on its way to the
NIT (or worse) in December finds itself in the thick of the race for
second place. The Irish shot 57.7% from the field in the second half as
they ran away from #15 Marquette to win 76-59, moving to within a
half-game of second place as a result. Freshman Pat Connaughton led four
Notre Dame players in double figures with 23 points, and the growth of
he, Eric Atkins and Jerian Grant has played a huge role in Notre Dame
not only surviving but thriving in dealing with life without the injured
Tim Abromaitis. Grant's versatility was on display against Marquette,
as he not only scored 11 points but dished out a team-high eight assists
while Atkins scored 18. The play of Syracuse has turned the Big East
into a league that will offer more suspense in the race for second, and
at this point Notre Dame is just as capable as anyone else to grab that
spot.

4. Iona's second half execution on both ends of the floor too much for Manhattan.
At the under-8 media timeout in the first meeting between the rivals
separated by just nine miles, Iona held a 67-49 lead in a game that
would eventually end on an Emmy Andujar three as time expired (75-72
Manhattan win). No such heroics this time around as the Gaels made sure
to not allow the Jaspers to storm back, winning 85-73 thanks to improved
play on the defensive end of the floor in the second half. Iona limited
the quality looks for George Beamon, who finished with 26 points after
scoring 19 in the first half, and as a team Manhattan shot just 38.2%
from the field. Mike Glover led a balanced attack with 19 points and
seven rebounds while Scott Machado (nine assists) and Momo Jones scored
18 apiece for the Gaels, who remain in first place with the win. Next up
for Iona is a trip to Loyola (MD) on Friday night, which could also be a
battle for first is the Greyhounds take care of business against Saint
Peter's.

5. George Mason hangs on at home to beat ODU, resulting in a three-way tie atop the CAA.
Paul Hewitt's Patriots have now won seven of their last eight games,
rebounding from a loss to Delaware to beat ODU 54-50 in a matchup of two
of the four teams that entered Saturday tied for first in the CAA.
George Mason got the job done by doing something simple in the second
half: they made shots. GMU shot just 20% from the field in the first
half, trailing 26-20 at the break and their 12 turnovers didn't help
matters either. The second half was a different story as the Patriots
shot 41.2% from the field while also refusing to settle for threes as
they did in the first. George Mason's parade to the foul line (19-for-23
in the second half, 27-for-35 for the game) would prove to be the
difference as the Patriots outscored the Monarchs by 17 from the charity
stripe. VCU and Drexel are a part of the tie at this point, and while
Mason doesn't play Drexel again (the Dragos won the first meeting) they
do get two shots at VCU. Can someone in this group earn an at-large
berth? The possibility is definitely there at this point.

Quick Hitters

1. No Kevin Parrom to start the trip and no Jordin Mayes on Saturday as well, but that didn't stop Arizona
from beating Stanford 56-43 in Palo Alto. That completes the Wildcats'
road sweep of the Bay Area schools and keeps them two games back the
Pac-12 behind Washington. Kyle Fogg led four players in double figures
with 14 points and the Wildcats limited Stanford to 25.4% shooting from
the field.

2. Victor Oladipo scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Indiana
past Purdue 78-61, snapping their five-game losing streak to the
Boilermakers and moving the Hoosiers to 6-6 in the Big Ten. Robbie
Hummel led the Boilers with 16 points and ten rebounds, but Purdue shot
just 29.6% from the field in the loss.

3. One team that picked up a much-needed win for their resume was Wyoming,
who knocked off #13 UNLV 68-66 in Laramie. Leonard Washington and Paco
Cruz scored 16 points apiece and Luke Martinez 15 as the Cowboys made up
for a disappointing loss to TCU earlier in the week. Larry Shyatt
deserves a little more pub nationally than he's received for the Pokes'
18-5 start.

4. How the Atlantic 10 will shake out from an NCAA
tournament bid standpoint has been one of the major points of
conversation recently, but there may not be much doubt as to who the
best team is. Temple sits alone in first place due to their 73-56
win over Rhode Island and La Salle's 70-66 loss to Saint Joseph's. The
Owls' perimeter trio of Juan Fernandez, Ramone Moore and Khalif Wyatt
may be the best in the A-10, something that seemed preposterous to
suggest before the season started due to the presence of Tu Holloway and
Mark Lyons at Xavier.

5. There's now a tie for first in the Missouri Valley as Northern Iowa knocked off #12 Creighton 65-62 on an Anthony James three as time expired. Wichita State
took advantage of this, beating Indiana State 71-66 behind Garrett
Stutz' 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. The February 11th rematch
in Omaha (Creighton won the first meeting) will likely determine the
top seed in Arch Madness.

6. Nevada took their first
loss in WAC play as they fell 72-68 to Idaho in Reno. Kyle Barone scored
16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Vandals, who were able to
take advantage of Dario Hunt and Malik Story combining to shoot 3-for-12
from the field. While the Wolf Pack are 19-4 overall (8-1 WAC) this is a
tough loss to take in regards to a possible at-large bid should they
need it (entered the week with an RPI of 59 and an SOS of 182 per the
NCAA's numbers). That Sears BracketBusters game at Iona became a lot
more important for the visitors.

7. While much of the country
focused on the Kansas/Missouri battle there was a big matchup in the Big
West, with the winner likely emerging as the biggest threat to Long
Beach State in the conference tournament. Bob Burton's Cal State Fullerton squad made quite the statement, beating UCSB
99-86 thanks in large part to 37 points from Kwame Vaughn and 25 from
Isiah Umipig. Fullerton shot 52.6% from the field and a ridiculous
17-for-26 from three to move into a tie for second with UCSB.

8.
The majority of the talk surrounding the Conference USA race has
centered around the four teams that looked to have the best shot at
earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. But don't forget about Tulsa,
who beat Marshall 79-70 at home to move to 7-2 in league play. Doug
Wojcik's Golden Hurricane have won seven straight and while they do have
to visit Southern Miss, Tulsa gets Memphis at home in the regular
season finale.

9. Yes Fab Melo returned to the lineup for #2 Syracuse,
but while the big man is definitely a major part of their plans to say
his return was the only reason for the Orange's 95-70 win over St.
John's would be short-sighted. Dion Waiters and C.J. Fair each scored 14
points and Michael Carter-Williams 13 off the bench and five Syracuse
players finished in double figures.

10. Jared Sullinger scored 24 points and corralled ten rebounds as #3 Ohio State
avenged last season's loss in Madison with a 58-52 win over Wisconsin.
Deshaun Thomas added 16 for the Buckeyes while Wisconsin was done in by
their 5-for-27 shooting from beyond the arc.

11. There have, and will be, matchups in which it looks unfair to have teams play #1 Kentucky.
That's what happened to South Carolina, who was in over their heads in
the 86-52 pasting that wasn't that close. Anthony Davis missed out on
that elusive triple-double but 22 points, eight rebounds and eight
blocks is nothing to scoff at. It will be fun to see how #11 Florida matches up with the Wildcats on Tuesday night, as the Gators may be the "last stand" for the rest of the SEC.

12. Florida took care of business at home with a 73-65 win over Vanderbilt
in Gainesville with Kenny Boynton (18 points) and Bradley Beal (16
points, seven rebounds) leading four players in double figures. Jeffery
Taylor led the Commodores with 25 points and John Jenkins added 15 but
it's tough to win anywhere much less in the O-Dome when you shoot
8-for-25 from beyond the arc.

13. Without Jim Calhoun on the sidelines it was time for the Connecticut
Huskies to step up both their play and their leadership. That happened,
as UConn beat a Seton Hall team without the services of Herb Pope 69-46
in what would turn out to be a bad afternoon for Big East coaches from
the Garden State. Kevin Willard would get ejected in the loss (Rutgers'
Mike Rice was run at Louisville), the sixth in a row for the Pirates.
Ryan Boatright led the Huskies with 19 points and Jeremy Lamb added 17
for UConn.

Five Notable Performances

1. G Kwame Vaughn and G Isiah Umipig (Cal State Fullerton)
Vaughn
put up 37 points, six rebounds and six assists in the Titans' 99-86 win
over UCSB while Umipig added 25 points, five assists and four
rebounds.

2. F Josten Thomas (Hawai'i)
29 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in the Warriors' 83-81 overtime win at San Jose State.

3. G Reggie Hamilton (Oakland)
40 points (9-14 3PT), four rebounds and four assists in the Golden Grizzlies' 74-70 double overtime win at Western Illinois.

4. G Damian Lillard (Weber State)
34
points (12-18 FG), five assists, three rebounds and two steals in the
Wildcats' 93-81 win over Northern Colorado. It's beyond time that
Lillard receive some National Player of the Year pub.

5. G Marcus Denmon (Missouri)
29 points (10-16 FG), nine rebounds and two assists in the Tigers' 74-71 win over #8 Kansas.

Saturday Recap: Iowa State Hands #5 Kansas Their First League Loss

To say that there were some complaints about the "quality" of Saturday's schedule would be an understatement as many felt that the college basketball slate wouldn't provide much intrigue. But once again college basketball didn't disappoint the fans, with the big result being Iowa State's 72-64 win over #5 Kansas. The Cyclones won despite turning the ball over 19 times by getting to the foul line and controlling the boards. ISU attempted 34 free throws (making 25) to just sixteen for the Jayhawks (who made ten) in handing the visitors their first Big 12 loss. Add in a 36-23 rebounding edge (with 11 offensive rebounds) and some "Hilton Magic" and the end result is a signature win for an Iowa State team that needed one for their NCAA Tournament hopes.

"It's the second time we've played Kansas and in both games our bigs did a heck of a job against some of the best front line players in the country so you have to take your hat off to them," said guard Scott Christopherson, who finished with 14 points (9-10 FT) and three assists. "Not only did they rebound but they defended really well. Kansas puts pressure on your bigs to guard, and our bigs definitely answered the bell today."

Royce White and Melvin Ejim combined to turn the ball over 13 times but they were also the teams leading scorers and rebounders. White, whose versatility has made him one of the best players in the Big 12, finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Ejim added 15 and eight rebounds. Iowa State won the majority of the 50/50 battles and that proved to be one of the key factors down the stretch despite their scoring just eight second chance points.

"We talk about 50/50 balls all the time. We don't put football pads on and dive after them but we talk about it a lot," said Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg. "We were the first to the floor a couple times and we talk a lot about that as well. Overall a great effort. The first few minutes of the second half was disappointing but we called a quick timeout and got them back out there and refocused. We finished off and played our best stretch of basketball of the season."

The play that essentlally clinched the game for Iowa State came by way of a Kansas turnover, with Chris Babb getting a steal with 1:21 remaining. The Penn State transfer would cash in on the change in possession 25 seconds later with a three-pointer to make the score 67-59, and Iowa State would go on to make five of their last six free throws to sew things up. Tyshawn Taylor led the Jayhawks with 16 points and ten assists and Thomas Robinson added 13 and seven rebounds, but on an afternoon that saw all five KU starters reach double figures their bench didn't provide much help.

Iowa State's reserves outscored the Jayhawk bench 15-5 with Anthony Booker and Tyrus McGee providing the points (and ten rebounds) for the victors. McGee's three-point play with 6:06 remaining broke a 53-all tie and gave the Cyclones the lead for good. Kansas will remain the favorite to win the Big 12 despite this result, but the win was huge for an Iowa State team that went into Saturday without a single RPI Top 50 win (going by realtimerpi.com's numbers). If they can continue to attack the boards (37.9% offensive rebounding percentage on Saturday) and play aggressive basketball, Iowa State has the tools needed to get to the Big Dance.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Saint Mary's takes care of BYU in Provo to remain undefeated in WCC play.
Having already dropped one game at home in conference play, Dave Rose's BYU Cougars needed a win over first-place Saint Mary's if they were to remain a major player in the WCC race. But with the Gaels showing a level of play on the road that's been absent in recent years BYU now finds themselves three games out of first with two games against Gonzaga still left on their schedule. Saint Mary's made up for 24 turnovers and allowing 17 offensive rebounds by shooting 55% from the field and going 25-for-33 from the foul line, winning 80-66 in front of a frenzied Marriott Center crowd that crossed the line at times with the throwing of objects onto the floor. What makes the win (and the margin) all the more surprising is the line that starting point guard Matthew Dellavedova put up, as he finished 1-for-4 from the field (ten points) to go along with seven rebounds, six turnovers and four assists.

But he had plenty of help, with redshirt freshman forward Brad Waldow (19 points, eight rebounds) continuing his solid play of late and Clint Steindl adding 16 points off the bench. Rob Jones scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Saint Mary's, who still has a trip to Gonzaga on their schedule to address. The BYU trio of Matt Carlino (15 points, three assists), Brandon Davies (14 points, seven rebounds) and Noah Hartsock (15 points, three rebounds) led the way but they didn't receive much help while the Gaels' stars did and that proved to be the difference. In prior seasons the late-season fade was an issue for Randy Bennett's team, but in their winning of a chippy affair (the officials were a little too vigorous in their use of the whistle, which didn't help either team) Saint Mary's showed that they've got the staying power needed to not only win the WCC but make some noise in the Big Dance.

2. #4 Syracuse survives a challenge from West Virginia...and the officials marred the ending as well.
What tends to happen in games that are marred by a missed call is that both teams get cheated. The losing team for obvious reasons but the winning squad as well, as they have to defend an outcome that came through no fault of their own. Three officials missed a clear goaltending violation by Baye Keita in the final seconds that would have tied the game, and with Gary Browne missing a last-second three West Virginia left the Carrier Dome with a 63-61 loss. Frankly the Mountaineers have a right to be furious over the missed call, which also overshadows the fact that they out-rebounded Syracuse 41-20 on the afternoon with 19 offensive rebounds. Safe to say that on the interior the Orange miss starting center Fab Melo, but when you get whipped like this one the glass the issue is bigger than one missing player.

Kevin Jones led the Mountaineers, who responded well to the whipping they took at St. John's on Wednesday night, with 20 points and eight rebounds and four other players grabbed at least five boards (three being guards) for the visitors. Looking at the box score it's natural to ask how did Syracuse win. They scored two more points at the foul line (13-11) but they also made up for a 4-for-18 afternoon from beyond the arc by shooting 63% from inside of it. West Virginia on the other hand shot 16-for-44 from two, which to a certain extent nullified their offensive rebounding performance (OR%: 55.9) as they only scored 13 second-chance points to eight for the Orange. Brandon Triche scored 18 points and Kris Joseph 13 to keep the Orange alone atop the Big East standings, leaving West Virginia to wonder what could have been had that violation been called.

3. Washington outlasts Arizona to complete their road sweep, and the Wildcats lose Kevin Parrom too.
Road sweeps will eventually determine who wins the Pac-12, as it tends to do in most seasons. But given the conference's struggled they've become even more important, making Washington's 69-67 win at Arizona that much bigger. Tony Wroten may have shot 5-for-18 from the field in scoring 17 points but his aggressiveness was just what the Huskies needed in front of a frenzied crowd, and his block of a Josiah Turner layup attempt just before the final buzzer preserved the win. Terrence Ross scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and C.J. Wilcox added 15 off the bench (and five key free throws down the stretch) to keep the Huskies tied for first place in the conference. Solomon Hill was outstanding for Arizona as he finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds and Jesse Perry added 13 and 12, but the Wildcats were unable to finish off their late rally.

And Sean Miller's team was hit with another blow after the game as it was announced that wing Kevin Parrom would miss the remainder of the season with a broken bone in his right foot. Parrom missed the second half with the injury and it's a cruel twist for a young man who has fought a great amount of adversity this year. His loss is big for the Wildcats, as Parrom's versatility and savvy gave Arizona a player they could rely on to do whatever was required of him on the floor at any particular moment. Are youngsters such as Turner and Nick Johnson ready to step up? Can Kyle Fogg and Brendon Lavender give them more? The answers to those questions will determine Arizona's fate down the stretch. As for Washington the play of Wroten is quickly becoming the key to their hopes of winning the Pac-12, and if he can continue on this path the Huskies will be right there at the finish.

4. Good luck trying to figure out the Atlantic 10, but Temple made quite a statement at home.
Just as wild as the Pac-12 race (but better in terms of quality at the top) has been the Atlantic 10, which seems to become more unpredictable by the day. But if there's one thing that stands out after Saturday's action it's that Fran Dunphy's Temple Owls are currently a step ahead of the competition. Led by Ramone Moore (21 points) and Juan Fernandez (17 points) the Owls whipped city rival Saint Joseph's 78-60 in a game that saw all five Hawks starters fail to reach double figures. Khalif Wyatt added ten points and eight rebounds and Micheal Eric chipped in with 11 off the bench in a game Temple led by as many as 28 points late in the second half.

As a team the Owls shot 60% from the floor and 53.3% from three, overwhelming a Saint Joseph's team that was led by 6th man Ronald Roberts (17 points, ten rebounds). Temple is part of a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 with surprises Massachusetts (who beat Saint Louis) and La Salle (winners over Duquesne). Saint Louis, who has already won at Xavier, will remain a factor in the race as well Xavier (who won at Charlotte) and Dayton (who inexplicably lost at home to Rhode Island). But if one were to handicap the race right now Temple would be the likely choice to win the conference. The guard play has been well-documented and the return of Eric adds a big man the Owls were missing earlier in the season. If Temple continues to execute on the offensive end as they did against the Hawks they're going to be tough to knock off.

5. #13 Florida's shooting from deep proves to be the difference in their win over #16 Mississippi State.
In the first half of the Gators' 69-57 win over Mississippi State on Saturday the Bulldogs outscored the Gators 10-8 in the paint. That statistic flipped in a big way in the second half, with Florida outscoring the visitors 20-4 on their way to the win. Florida's ability to knock down three-pointers will get the majority of the headlines as they knocked down 11 of their 24 attempts on the day, but don't overlook the importance of their paint scoring. Bradley Beal led Florida with 19 points with Erik Murphy adding 14 and Patric Young 12, and nine of Florida's final eleven field goals were scored in the paint.

Murphy's ability to shoot from the perimeter (4-for-7 3PT) helped open things up for Florida inside, and the combined nine assists and no turnovers from Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton was key as well. Dee Bost and Arnett Moultrie scored 12 points apiece to lead Mississippi State (Moultrie also grabbed 13 rebounds) but Rick Stansbury's guys fell victim to an 11-0 run that put the game out of reach after a Bost three cut Florida's lead to four (51-47) with 8:01 remaining.

Quick Hitters

1. #6 Duke hung on to beat St. John's 83-76 but head coach Mike Krzyzewski was none too pleased after the game. The Blue Devils were sloppy in the second half offensively and defensively they didn't have an answer for Moe Harkless, who finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Kelly scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Mason Plumlee scored 15 and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who need better guard play if they're to win the ACC.

2. Nasir Robinson scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Pittsburgh's 72-60 win over #10 Georgetown, moving the Panthers to 12-0 all-time at the Petersen Events Center against Top 10 opponents. This game is also another step in the right direction for Pitt, who assisted on 20 of their 25 made baskets. With Tray Woodall finally healthy the Panthers have their point guard back, and they can definitely make a run towards an NCAA berth.

3. There's more work to be done for Colorado State to earn an NCAA Tournament berth but their 77-60 win over #12 San Diego State was a step in the right direction. Wes Eikmeier scored 19 points and Will Bell 17 and five rebounds for the Rams, whose win also resulted in a tie atop the Mountain West as UNLV won in overtime at Air Force. Whether or not Tim Miles' team can make a run at the bubble (or better) remains to be seen, but this kind of win was absent from there resume before Saturday.

4. Wichita State was involved in a thriller but their 93-86 triple overtime loss at Drake dropped the Shockers a game behind Creighton in the Missouri Valley standings. Ben Simons led the Bulldogs with 29 points and eight rebounds and Kurt Alexander's 17 points off the bench were also key. Garrett Stutz led Wichita State with 27 points and Joe Ragland scored 25, but as a result of this loss the Shockers will likely need to win the games approaching the February 11th battle at Creighton to remain a game out.

5. So much for the momentum gained from their win over first-place LIU Brooklyn for Robert Morris, as they fell 81-68 to St. Francis (NY). The loss drops the Colonials two games behind LIU in the NEC, which is where they were before Thursday night's win. Glen Braica's Terriers, who were led by Brent Jones (19 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Travis Nichols (16 points off the bench), are now tied with Wagner a game behind their Brooklyn rivals.

6. Cal State Fullerton got their chance to not only make a statement but add some intrigue to the Big West race but Long Beach State was having no parts of that as they put together a late run to win 75-61. Dan Monson's team closed the game on a 22-10 run after having their lead cut to two points, and at 9-0 in league play the 49ers look to be in good position to win another regular season crown.

7. Kenny McGowen's three-pointer as time expired gave Idaho State a 64-62 win over Weber State, who entered the game undefeated in Big Sky play. McGowen scored 19 points to lead all scorers while Scott Bamforth led the Wildcats with 17 and Damian Lillard added 15. While the win breathes life into the Bengals' hopes of qualifying for the conference tournament it also gives new life to Montana, who is now tied in the loss column with Weber State atop the standings.

8. Dominique Morrison scored 28 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field as Oral Roberts moved to 12-0 in the Summit League with a 77-67 win over UMKC. The Golden Eagles attempted just seven three-pointers but made five while also shooting 22-for-38 from two, and at 20-4 ORU hasn't received the level of national respect that they deserve. This team will be a tough out come March.

9. Speaking of March, good luck to the selection committee finding 37 at-large teams better than Middle Tennessee should the Blue Raiders not win the Sun Belt's automatic bid. Middle Tennessee lost 84-77 at Vanderbilt in what's a good win for the Commodores but the skill of players such as LaRon Dendy should not be lost in the final score. Few teams will be lining up to play Kermit Davis' club anytime soon.

10. Memphis and Southern Miss won the two matchups of the top four teams in Conference USA, setting up a showdown for sole possession of first place Wednesday night in Hattiesburg. Will Barton was outstanding for Memphis in their 83-76 win over Marshall, scoring 29 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Neil Watson (23 points) and Darnell Dodson (22 points, eight rebounds) led Southern Miss to a 78-65 win at UCF.

11. Both Purdue and Illinois had chances to either move to or remain at the head of the pack in the middle of the Big Ten standings but only the Boilermakers took full advantage. Robbie Hummel's jumper from the left baseline in the final seconds gave Purdue a 58-56 win at Northwestern, but Illinois made some poor decisions late and ended up falling 77-72 at Minnesota. Tough to figure out how the middle of the conference will shake out but the ability to win tight games on the road will set teams apart.

Five Notable Performances

1. G Shane Gibson (Sacred Heart)
43 points (16-28 FG) and five rebounds in the Pioneers' 81-80 double overtime loss to Mount St. Mary's. Gibson's three at the end of regulation tied the score at 70 and sent the game into overtime.

2. F Ryan Pearson (George Mason)
29 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Patriots' 89-79 win over James Madison.

3. F Moe Harkless (St. John's) and F Mason Plumlee (Duke)
Harkless accounted for 30 points and 14 rebounds in the Red Storm's 83-76 loss at #6 Duke while Plumlee led the victors with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

4. G Reggie Hamilton (Oakland)
37 points, six assists and four rebounds in the Golden Grizzlies' 78-75 loss to North Dakota State.

5. F Tony Mitchell (North Texas)
21 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in the Mean Green's 76-64 win over Arkansas State.

Special Note: Towson picks up their first win of the season
Congrats to Pat Skerry's Towson Tigers, who picked up their first win of the season (and ended a 41-game losing streak) with a 66-61 win over UNC Wilmington. Marcus Damas led the way with 18 points while Deon Jones (15 points, six rebounds) and Robert Nwankwo (12 points, 11 rebounds) were also good. And Erique Gumbs, the lone member of the team to have experienced every loss, chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Good to see the program get rewarded for the hard work put in; hope Binghamton (0-20) gets to experience this feeling soon as well.

#13 Florida vs. #16 Mississippi State: Saturday's Preview

While Kentucky is the clear favorite to win the SEC, the battle beneath them should be a spirited one. #16 Mississippi State (17-4, 4-2), who has already won at Vanderbilt, could win the tiebreaker with #13 Florida (16-4, 4-1) with a win in Gainesville on Saturday afternoon. That's easier said than done as Billy Donovan's team is 10-0 at home this season, but the Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings in this series. A big reason why Rick Stansbury's team can win at the O-Dome is UTEP transfer Arnett Moultrie (17.1 ppg, 11.2 rpg), who has to be considered one of the early favorites for SEC Player of the Year.

Moultrie is shooting 56.3% from the field and his arrival has allowed the Bulldogs to not have to rely on the enigmatic Renardo Sidney as much. Sidney has a great amount of potential, and to be fair he's played solid if not spectacular basketball of later, but he's essentially a bit player at this stage. They'll be faced with the task of slowing down Florida's Patric Young (11.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg), one of college basketball's most impressive physical specimens. But Young has been banged up recently, and when adding that to the fact that the Gators tend to forget about him in the paint Mississippi State should be able to guard him effectively.

Florida also has Erik Murphy (10.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and Will Yeguete (4.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg) to rely on inside, with Murphy being the just as comfortable if not more on the perimeter while Yeguete does a lot of the dirty work in the paint. What will ultimately decide the contest is the play of the guards, most notably a Florida group that's extremely talented but doesn't always make the best decisions. Erving Walker (12.8 ppg, 5.1 apg) and Kenny Boynton (18.0 ppg, 2.9 apg) are the primary ball-handlers for Florida, and while they've improved some when it comes to decision-making there are still strides to be made.

Florida's best guard? That could very well be freshman Bradley Beal (13.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg), who at this stage needs to be more assertive on the offensive end of the floor. The McDonald's All-America has the talent needed to take over games but he's almost deferential to a fault within their offense, and Rutgers transfer Mike Rosario (8.5 ppg) provides scoring off the bench. Mississippi State is solid on the perimeter as well with senior Dee Bost (16.0 ppg, 4.7 apg, 3.6 rpg) leading the way. Bost has been a steadying influence for the Bulldogs, something that didn't happen at times last season. His role is made important by the fact that outside of classmate Brian Bryant the Bulldogs rely on youngsters in their rotation.

Freshman Rodney Hood (11.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is one of the best jumpers in the SEC but don't let that overshadow his skill set. Hood's shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.7% from beyond the arc on the season and his assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.6 is the best on the team. Sophomore Jalen Steele and freshman Deville Smith are also important contributors for Rick Stansbury's team on the perimeter. Florida's been the better team in regards to efficiency numbers while Mississippi State's been slightly better on the glass, which should make for a good contest.

Also of note on Saturday is a big matchup in the WCC between first-place Saint Mary's and BYU in Provo, with the Cougars needing to hold serve at home in order to remain in the race. Matthew Dellavedova and Rob Jones were difference-makers in their first meeting, a 98-82 SMC win in Moraga, and the play of redshirt freshman Brad Waldow of late has been a solid boost for the Gaels. The key for BYU: run more of their offense through forwards Brandon Davies and Noah Hartsock. Matt Carlino has been ice cold of late and the same could be said of Charles Abouo, and frankly it isn't realistic to expect this perimeter group to do what Jimmer Fredette did last season in his role.

Kansas visits Iowa State in what could be a dangerous game for the Jayhawks given how tough it is to win in Ames. Two of the best forwards in the Big 12 will be on display as well, and the fact that they get the job done in different ways will make for a fun matchup. Thomas Robinson is an elite finisher and Kansas calls on him for interior offense while also being able to step out and knock down the occasional jumper. Iowa State features Royce White, who they use in a point guard role and he's done a very good job in his first season of eligibility for the Cyclones. If Fred Hoiberg's team is to make a run at an NCAA bid they'll need a win like this for their resume.

Middle Tennessee visits Vanderbilt in a critical contest for the Blue Raiders when it comes to possibly earning an at-large bid because their gaudy record the resume lacks a marquee victory. LaRon Dendy is the ring leader for Kermit Davis' squad, which leads the Sun Belt in scoring and field goal percentage, and they're more than capable of knocking off the Commodores. In order to do so the Blue Raiders will need to keep John Jenkins and Jeffery Taylor in check while also holding their own on the glass against Festus Ezeli and Lance Goulbourne.

Other games to keep an eye on include Saint Joseph's visiting Temple in a key matchup within both the Atlantic 10 and the Big 5, Georgetown visiting Pittsburgh in a game the Panthers could definitely use for their resume and West Virginia visiting Syracuse. Virginia/NC State should be a fun battle in the ACC with both teams hoping to further establish themselves as upper echelon squads, Cal State Fullerton has a chance to make a statement as they visit Long Beach State and in the NEC surprising St. Francis (NY) visits a Robert Morris team fresh off of their win over first-place LIU Brooklyn.

Monday Recap: Baylor Workmanlike in Win over Texas A&M

With the Baylor Bears achievig the highest ranking in school history on Monday it would have been easy for Scott Drew's team to suffer a letdown against Texas A&M. But the fourth-ranked Bears were ready from the start, scoring the first eight points of the game on their way to a 61-52 win that wasn't as close as the margin would indicate. The Bears shot just 35.7% from the field in the first half but still went into the break with a 30-17 lead thanks to their defense, which limited the Aggies to 21.4% shooting. Perry Jones III led four starters in double figures with 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds and the Bears led by as many as 19 points early in the second half.

"We came in prepared, but we played very timidly and a little bit overwhelmed," said Texas A&M guard Elston Turner, who led the Aggies with 21 points. "The fact that we weren't making shots didn't help either. Like coach said, the foul trouble kind of got our offense out of sync."

Khris Middleton, who entered the game as Texas A&M's leading scorer, finished with 14 points but played just ten minutes in the first half due to foul trouble (scoring three points). It also didn't help that David Lobeau picked up three first-half fouls and didn't attempt a shot, and he was unable to get into the flow of things at all for that reason. Texas A&M needed guys to step up to assist Turner and that simply did not happen, with the other three starters scoring 15 points combined and the bench getting outscored 13-2 by Baylor. That didn't get it done in Waco and similar production will land the Aggies in serious trouble down the line as well, but they won't encounter many defenses like Baylor's either.

"The back line of that zone is very big and takes time to adjust to," said Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy. "I thought we got some pretty good looks early. We just didn't make them and got in foul trouble. We didn't get a whole lot of help from the bench either."

Baylor won comfortably despite 16 turnovers (Pierre Jackson had seven) and A&M limiting Jackson and Brady Heslip to four points combined, as A.J. Walton picked up the slack with 10 points and two assists. That's the scary thing about the Bears: while they've had some good wins the potential is there to be a much better team. And with the players Baylor has on the back line of that zone, from Jones III to Quincy Acy to Quincy Miller, Anthony Jones and even Cory Jefferson they're an extremely difficult matchup. The turnovers and rebounding need to be cleaned up, but this could be a special season in Waco.

"One game it might be the guards, one game it might be the wings and one game it is the inside players," said Drew of his team's versatility. "It all depends on what the defense gives you and that is what makes us good - our depth. We're unselfish and we work for each other."

Other Notable Happenings

1. Another rough day for the bottom of the ACC as Boston College and Wake Forest both fall.
The ACC hasn't had the best start to the season from a non-conference standpoint when you remove Duke, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Florida State is 0-2 against the Ivy League and other teams have also had their issues. So what Boston College and Wake Forest did on Monday didn't help matters despite the fact that neither has the look of a team headed for postseason play come March. The Eagles fell 78-72 in double overtime to a Rhode Island team that's won just three games on the season, with the combination of 16 turnovers, URI making 27 free throws to BC's 11 and a 46-35 URI rebounding edge dooming Steve Donahue's team.

As for the Demon Deacons, with C.J. Harris (groin) out they fell to Wofford 56-52 in Winston-Salem. Wake shot 34.8% from the field in the first half as they trailed 32-22 at the break, and they couldn't do enough in the second half to make it up. Results like these won't do the ACC any favors in the computers, and that could be the difference for a league bubble team. So for the sake of the middle of the pack, the teams at the bottom needed to do more to carry their weight outside of the league. Safe to say that hasn't been the case.

2. Robert Morris finds a way to win at Ohio despite turning the ball over 31 times.
Very rarely will a team that turns the ball over 31 times and shoots 21 fewer shots than their opponent ends up winning, but that's exactly what happened for Andy Toole's Colonials as they beat Ohio 70-67. Why was Robert Morris able to end the Bobcats' nine-game win streak? Because of their defense, which didn't allow Ohio to take advantage of those extra opportunities. Ohio shot just 35.3% from the field and Walter Offutt and D.J. Cooper combined to make six of their thirty-two shots from the field, and as a team the Bobcats also shot 3-for-26 from beyond the arc.

Velton Jones led three RMU starters in double figures with 17 points, and it's difficult to see the Colonials turning the ball over 31 times in a game again. With Wagner's excellent holiday run and this win the Northeast Conference has received a welcome boost, which should make the race for the regular season title all the more entertaining. Robert Morris will definitely be a player, and an NCAA Tournament bid is definitely possible for a team that was one win away last season.

3. Orlando Johnson makes up for a quiet night with a big shot to lead UCSB past Cal Poly.
Monday marked the first game in over a week for UCSB and it wasn't an easy contest either, as the Gauchos were on the road to take on a Cal Poly team that's surprised folks this season. Orlando Johnson, UCSB's leading scorer, made just three of his first thirteen shots from the field in what was one of his worst outings of the season. But he saved his best for last, getting a shooter's roll on a three-pointer with 5.1 seconds remaining being the difference in UCSB's 58-57 win. Alan Williams was the unsung hero for UCSB with 13 points and ten rebounds off the bench as the Gauchos picked up a key Big West victory, while Will Taylor led the Mustangs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Even with the time off not playing a home game in 35 days took its toll on UCSB, who is expected to be right there with Long Beach State in the run for the regular season title. And with Johnson and James Nunnally leading the way, Bob Williams team should be able to do just that.

Quick Hitters

1. Staying in the Big West for a moment, keep an eye on Cal-State Fullerton. Bob Burton's Titans moved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in league play with a 78-73 win over Pacific, and their surplus of Division I transfers could make them the dark horse in that title race. Cal transfer D.J. Seeley scored 20 points and San Francisco transfer Kwame Vaughn scored a team-best 21, while another former Golden Bear (Amondi Omoke) scored 11 and grabbed 11 rebounds.

2. It wasn't pretty as the two teams combined to turn the ball over 31 times but Virginia did what they had to do in beating LSU 57-52 in Baton Rouge. Sammy Zeglinski led three starters in double figures with 17 points as the Cavailers had the offensive balance that LSU failed to create (outside of Justin Hamilton (21 points, 9-14 FG) the Tigers shot 12-for-34 from the field.

3. Can Rider (4-11) find a way to snap out of their funk and be a factor in the MAAC race? That remains to be seen, but the Broncs took the first step in their 88-77 win at Manhattan. Novar Gadson led five players in double figures with 21 points and Brandon Penn posted a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) as Rider avenged their loss to Manhattan last month. The talent's there to make a run but the productivity needs to be there as well.

4. Staying in the MAAC, Niagara picked up a big victory as they won 66-61 at Loyola (MD). Juan'Ya Green and Antoine Mason combined to score 35 points while Ameen Tanksley added 15 (averaging 8.2 per game) as the Purple Eagles handed the Greyhounds their first conference loss.

5. Campbell moved to 3-0 in Big South play as they beat Coastal Carolina 70-65 in overtime. CCU turned the ball over 20 times as they fell to 3-1 in league play and Trey Freeman led the Camels to the win with 20 points and five assists. Look for these two teams to be right there with UNC Asheville in the run for the Big South crown.

6. Big news from early Monday in Stillwater as Oklahoma State announced that guard J.P. Olukemi would miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. With the Cowboys losing two guards at the end of the semester (transferring) this was one loss they didn't need. Even more will be asked of Keiton Page and Cezar Guerrero now, and going into Big 12 play shorthanded could be too much for Travis Ford's team.

7. It's early but VCU is looking to be the class of the CAA right now. The Rams have won 10 of their last 11 games, beating Hofstra 80-63 in Hempstead. Also preseason favorite Drexel fell at Georgia State 58-44, and even with players such as Chris Fouch at his disposal scoring could once again be a concern for Bruiser Flint.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Kenny Gabriel (Auburn)
24 points (11-13 FG), 13 rebounds, ten blocked shots, four steals and three assists in the Tigers' 67-41 win over Bethune-Cookman.

2. F Kenny Kadji (Miami) and G Trevis Simpson (UNC Greensboro)
Both players put up career-best performances in the Hurricanes' 99-89 victory. Kadji finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds while Simpson paced the Spartans with 36 points and some emphatic above-the-rim finishes.

3. F Stan Okoye (VMI)
25 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks in the Keydets' 76-72 win over Gardner-Webb.

Jon Teitel's Coaches Interview Series: Cal-State Fullerton's Bob Burton

In the latest installment of his Greatest Coaches interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with current Cal-State Fullerton head coach Bob Burton, who has won 123 games and made one trip to the NCAA Tournament since taking the job in 2003. Coach Burton has been a head coach for forty years and shares the honor of being a member of the California Community Colleges Coaches Hall of Fame with the likes of Jerry Tarkanian and Lute Olson. The task for Burton and his staff going into 2010-11 is to replace four starters from last year's team (16-15, 8-8 Big West; t-3rd).

Jon Teitel: At West Valley CC you went 488-158 in 21 years, were named conference Coach of the Year nine times and made three appearances in the state title game. How were you able to be so successful and why did you decide to leave?

Bob Burton: The success came when I started getting good players. I changed my whole recruiting philosophy, and then I was able to get the top players in the area, and later a few kids from outside the area. I was honestly close to getting out of college coaching at the time, as I was getting tired of driving vans around after games at 1AM. However, my former player Ray Lopes got the head job at Fresno State and I think he just wanted an old guy around, so he brought me in and let me run the offense. Coach Jerry Tarkanian left us a lot of good players, and we were able to win the WAC. I had never gotten a serious interview with a Division I program before, but after one year at Fresno I got a serious interview with Fullerton and they hired me.

JT: You came to Fullerton in 2003 and inherited a program that was coming off of NCAA probation and lost several potential starters for a variety of reasons (concussions, cancer, knee injuries, etc.). Were you a little worried about the situation you were stepping into, and how were you able to pull it all together?

BB: My 1st year was just disastrous, as it was a constant battle, but we had a nucleus of some good young kids (including Bobby Brown, who was our first recruit). After making it through that first year, I was able to keep the nucleus together and bring in some new players, and we had a dream season and made it to the NIT and got some credibility. What really helps is when your good players have friends who are also good players!

JT: In your first season your team was 0-4 in overtime games but in your second season you were 3-0 in such contests. What caused the turnaround, and how does your coaching style change when a game goes into overtime?

BB: It is basically just about the players. We had the ball and were leading USC late in a game that 1st season. However, the ball went right through our big man's hands, USC came down the court and hit a three, and then they won it in OT.

JT: In 2004 you were inducted into the California Community Colleges Coaches Hall of Fame. What did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding individual honor?

BB: I do not think guys at the D-1 level can relate to that, but I grew up as a California JC guy. I remember going to the first state tourney in 1964 and seeing Tarkanian walk in with his team. When I got the job at West Valley, they had not won in awhile, and I thought I was in over my head. As a historian of the JC sports scene out here, to get inducted into the Hall which had guys like Tarkanian and Lute Olson was very special.

2005 National Invitation Tournament

JT: Ralphy Holmes scored 27 points and had 13 rebounds, and his fade-away jumper at the buzzer gave you a two-point overtime win over Oregon State. Did you think he was going to make the shot, and where does that rank among the most clutch shots you have ever seen?

BB: We designed the play for him, which was called "Taco". As a pessimist, I was not sure if were heading for another OT. It was one of the great moments of my life. Ben Howland joked with me before the game that we could not win in Corvallis, but we proved him wrong.

JT: In your school's first nationally-televised game in 15 years, you lost to Georgetown in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 2,604 in McDonough Gymnasium because circus preparations made the MCI Center unavailable. How big of a home-court advantage did the Hoyas have, and what was the feeling like in your locker room afterwards?

BB: Two things hit us hard: the small gym was a tough environment, and Ralphy hurt his knee and was unable to play. We only had eight healthy guys, as another guy got hurt during warm-ups. We had another kid trip over an ESPN cable before the game, but thankfully he was able to play.

JT: In 2008 you won the conference title and led your team to its first NCAA tourney in 30 years before losing to Wisconsin (despite a career-high 31 PTS from Josh Akognon). What are your memories of that game?

BB: We were playing really well at the end of the year, and were a match-up problem for other teams because we were a small team that was deceptively good. Wisconsin was the Big Ten champ, and had two 7-footers, so it was actually an awful match-up for us. What I remember the most is how it was such a first-class event; we had a charter plane (unlike the NIT, when I had to send different players on different planes!), we went to practice with a police escort, etc. The toughest thing for a guy like me vs. a guy like Coach K is that it is a pretty quick stay. Once you get a taste you cannot wait to get back, but you might never get another chance.

JT: In February 2010 your team hung on for a triple overtime win over Cal-State Northridge by a score of 113-112 thanks to a go-ahead three-point play in the final seconds from walk-on guard Eric Williams, who was only playing as a result of 11 total players fouling out. Was that the most amazing game you have ever been a part of, and how on earth was your team able to keep from collapsing due to exhaustion?

BB: I was more worried about a guy my age not collapsing! One of the big debates now is how to play defense when you are up by three points at the end of a game. Every possible scenario happened in that game (let the team shoot, foul them before they shoot, etc.), and we capitalized on every single one. I thought that CSUN had it won, but the ball just bounced perfectly for Eric. We ran off the court and were just shaking our heads in disbelief that we won the game. It ranks as one of the weirdest wins I have ever had.

JT: In the first round of the 2010 Big West Conference Tournament Jacques Streeter threw a bounce pass to Gerard Anderson who jumped over Vinnie McGhee and threw down a tomahawk dunk that became an instant internet sensation. What do you remember about that dunk, and where does it rank among the best you have ever seen?

BB: The CSUN coaches are all really good friends of ours. At the post-game press conference I said, "Guys who say slam dunks are only worth 2 points are out of it". When Coach Bobby Braswell heard that, he wondered what he should tell his team afterwards, so they gave me a lot of grief about that. I have seen Gerard do a lot of incredible things like that, but it was such a spectacular dunk that it helped change the momentum of the game.

JT: You are known for having one of the highest scoring teams in the country. What is the key to your offensive philosophy?

BB: The biggest thing is to keep it simple and let them play. I give them the confidence to shoot the ball, but the key is to get good players. As long as you play hard and play together, you can live with an occasional bad shot. The only time we had 1 guy who really dominated without a lot of other scorers was Josh. I think it has a lot to do with why kids come here, as it was with Josh (who wanted a more up-tempo style).

JT: You have been a head coach for 40 years. What is the key to sticking around so long, and how do you want to be remembered once your coaching days are over?

BB: The key is passion and love for the game. I still feel the same way I did when I started out coaching in 1969. If you love it and enjoy it like I do, then you will never really look at it as a job. I loved it on every level, be it high school, JC, or 4-year college. In D-1 it is more about winning, so that changes things a lot. I hope to be remembered for being honest with everybody, which I have done from day 1 to a fault. I tell my players that "the only agenda here is that there will never be an agenda", so they all know that they will get treated the same.

Coach Burton is on Jon's list of best coaches in Big West history

Cal Poly: Jeff Schneider (1995-2001) 70-84, one conference title
CSU Fullerton: Bob Burton (2003-present) 123-92, one NCAA Tournament appearance, one conference title
CSU Northridge: Bobby Braswell (1996-present) 205-181, two NCAA Tournament appearances, three conference titles, three-time conference Coach of the Year
UC Riverside: John Masi (1979-2005) 462-269, six-time conference Coach of the Year
UC Davis: Bob Williams (1990-1998) 158-76, four conference titles, one Division II title, one-time national Coach of the Year
Long Beach State: Jerry Tarkanian (1968-1973) 122-20, four NCAA Tournament appearances, four conference titles
Pacific: Bob Thomason (1988-present) 365-262, four NCAA Tournament appearances, five conference titles, five-time conference Coach of the Year
UC Irvine: Pat Douglass (1997-2010) 197-191, two conference titles, one-time conference Coach of the Year
UCSB: Jerry Pimm (1983-1998) 222-201, two NCAA tourneys, one-time conference Coach of the Year
