Murray State Suffers First Loss: Thursday's Recap

As the streak grew longer, it seemed as if it became a foregone conclusion in the eyes of many that Murray State would simply run through the Ohio Valley Conference on their way to a Sears BracketBusters contest against Saint Mary's. Steve Prohm's head coaching career got off to a dream start, as the Racers won 23 straight games with Isaiah Canaan and Donte Poole leading the way. That run came to an end on Thursday night as the Racers fell 72-68 to a Tennessee State team that relied on balance to grab their eighth win in the last nine games.

Robert Covington led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points (and eight rebounds), scoring on a key tip-in with 1:25 remaining to give TSU a 69-65 lead. Just as important were the contributions of Kenny Moore (16 points) and Jordan Cyphers (ten points, three assists), who led a Tennessee State bench that outscored Murray State's reserves 30-10. Canaan scored 31 points to lead all scorers and Poole added ten but they were the only Murray State players to reach double figures, and their reliance on Canaan got the Racers in trouble down the stretch.

Jewuan Long's attempt to get Canaan (who was being double-teamed) was stolen by Patrick Miller and ultimately ended up in the hands of Covington, who missed both free throws to keep the score at 69-68. Canaan would drive the length of the floor before getting into trouble as he approached the foul line, ultimately turning the ball over and getting called for a foul with 3.5 seconds remaining. But if there's a question about how Murray handled their final possession (following a pair of Moore free throws), it would have to be why they attempted a length of the court baseball pass.

Why? The Racers had two timeouts remaining, and with that amount of time on the clock a play in which Murray State could complete the inbounds pass at around half court and use one of those timeouts may have been best. But hindsight is 20/20, and for a team that hasn't been in many situations like this down the stretch Murray State will get better from this.

The key: achieve better offensive balance, because while there certainly isn't a problem with Canaan and Poole being the primary options those two are going to need more consistent help. Outside of those two, Murray State shot 10-for-27 from the field, and the 18 turnovers the Racers racked up (Canaan: six) didn't help matters either. Does this outcome make the Saint Mary's game more important? From a seedind standpoint yes, due to the fact that Murray State is 3-0 against the RPI Top 100 and 12 of their 23 wins (three don't "count" in the NCAA evaluation process since they came against non-Division I opponents) are against teams with an RPI of 201 or worse.

But can someone honestly say with a straight face that Murray State, provided the wheels don't fall off, wouldn't be one of the 37 best teams should they not grab the OVC's automatic bid? Remember that bubble so many criticize (annually) for being weak? Let's step away from the ledge when discussing the at-large possibilities for Murray State, because there's a long way to go. The Racers now have the task of learning from their late-game miscues, and while this current team hasn't had to do that there's enough experience on the roster to make sure they do so.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Gonzaga not ready to hand over the WCC crown just yet.
There were many (myself included) who wondered if there was about to be a changing of the guard in the WCC on Thursday as Saint Mary's visited Gonzaga, as a win would give the Gaels a three-game lead with four to go. But the Bulldogs, who have won the last eleven regular season titles, weren't ready or willing to hand over the crown as they won 73-59. Kevin Pangos scored a game-high 27 points and three other starters reached double figures for the Bulldogs, who are now just a game behind Saint Mary's in the loss column. Matthew Dellavedova scored 20 points in a losing effort, but he shot 1-for-5 from the field in the second half and as a team the Gaels shot just 36% in the final 20 minutes.

By comparison the Bulldogs found just about any shot they wanted and knocked them down too, shooting 60% from the field (second half efficiency: 133.0) with Pangos scoring 15 of their 39 points. Robert Sacre, who wasn't a factor in the first meeting, scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who still have a home game against BYU on the schedule. Mark Few's team may not be in the driver's seat at this point, but if Saint Mary's is going to win the WCC the Bulldogs made sure it wasn't going to happen in their house.

2. As soon as we think we know who the Pac-12 frontrunner is, of course Washington gets blown out.
At this point it may be best to institute a rule stating that no one will attempt to anoint anone as the pacemaker in the Pac-12 race, because as soon as it seems like something is "known", that fact gets ripped to shreds. Lorenzo Romar's Huskies went to Eugene and got manhandled by Oregon, who raced out of the gates on an 8-0 run (all eight scored by Garrett Sim) and didn't look back until the 82-57 romp ended. Carlos Emory scored 16 points off the bench and Sim was one of three starters to score 13 points, and Dana Altman's team just looked far more prepared for what what going to happen on the floor than the Huskies.

That result dropped the Huskies into a tie for first with California, who took advantage of Maurice Jones picking up his third foul to whip USC 75-49. And just a game behind those two are Oregon, Arizona and Colorado, with the Wildcats beating the Buffaloes 71-57 thanks in part to double-doubles posted by Solomon Hill and Jesse Perry. Winners of three straight Arizona is the hottest team in this quintet, and with Utah visiting on Saturday afternoon it would be expected that the Wildcats earn the sweep. The Pac-12 needed some separation to ensure multiple NCAA bids (Cal and Arizona look to have the best resumes to date), but that doesn't seem likely to happen at this point.

3. Indiana proves to be too much for Illinois in the second half.
Illinois is a likely NCAA tournament team at this point, but they've done themselves no favors of late to say the least. The issue on Thursday night: Indiana's parade to the foul line, where they made 35 of 42 in their 84-71 win over the Fighting Illini. Illinois attempted just 15 free throws (making 12), and when a team can shoot 60% from the field and attempt 26 free throws (making 19) as Indiana did in the second half it's highly unlikely that they lose anywhere much less at sold-out Assembly Hall. Cody Zeller scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Hoosiers while Christian Watford and Victor Oladipo scored 18 apiece for a team that's won consecutive games for the first time since early January.

D.J. Richardson led the illini with 19 points and Meyers Leonard added 17, but the problem offensively for Illinois was that they essentially had three scorers to Indiana's four. Joe Bertrand and Tracy Abrams were both quiet in their starting roles, and Illinois made as many three-pointers as Indiana (seven) while attempting nine more (21-12). Indiana worked the ball inside of the arc for quality shots and it paid off, as they were frequent visitors to the foul line down the stretch. Bruce Weber's team has dropped five of their last six games, and with a trip to Michigan next on the schedule the Illini had better be careful. This isn't rock bottom, but things could spiral out of control if Illinois doesn't take care of their issues soon.

Quick Hitters

1. Minnesota
was unable to take advantage of the opportunity to add a quality win to
their resume as they fell at home to Wisconsin 68-61 in overtime.
Wisconsin didn't make a field goal over the last ten-plus minutes of
regulation but they were still able to get to the extra session, where
Jordan Taylor and company took care of the Golden Gophers. At 17-8
overall and 5-7 in league play, Tubby Smith's squad still has home games
against Ohio State, Michigan State and Indiana and they need to take
advantage of those opportunities.

2. While transfers have played
a major role in the success being enjoyed at Iowa State and Cal State
Fullerton, it can be argued that the transfer with the biggest impact is
Mississippi State's Arnett Moultrie. Moultrie scored 18 points
and grabbed nine rebounds in the Bulldogs' 70-60 win over Ole Miss, and
Dee Bost added 15 points and 13 assists. Moultrie's play has been a big
reason why Mississippi State has been one of the best teams in the SEC.

3. The Horizon League featured a matchup of the top two teams in the standings, and unfortunately for Cleveland State they couldn't get much of anything going offensively. Valparaiso
jumped out to a 22-4 lead and really weren't challenged in a 59-41 win
to take over sole possession of first place. Unfortunately for the
Crusaders however, they lost Kevin Van Wijk to a knee injury in the
first half and did not return. More should be learned about his status
on Friday, and Van Wijk being out for an extended period of time would
be a tough blow to take.

4. The race of interest in the South Division of the SoCon has
been the one for second place (and the other first round SoCon
tournament bye) thanks to the play of first-place Davidson, and Georgia Southern
took a big step towards grabbing that spot with a 63-49 win over
Wofford. The Eagles, who were led by Eric Ferguson's 15 points and 11
rebounds, moved to 10-4 in conference play while dropping the Terriers
to 8-6.

5. Guess who could be making a charge into the top three of the MAAC: Fairfield.
The Stags moved to 9-4 in conference play with a 60-54 win over
Manhattan, who sits alone in third with a 10-4 mark. Sydney Johnson's
team was expected to be Iona's toughest challenger but things haven't
worked out that way to this point. With a deep rotation led by the likes
of Derek Needham and Rakim Sanders however, Fairfield is more than
capable of winning the automatic bid.

6. The Summit League race took a turn in the wrong direction for South Dakota State
on Thursday night as they lost 72-68 at South Dakota, dropping two
games behind Oral Roberts in the loss column. The Golden Eagles beat
IUPUI 76-74 in overtime with Roderick Pearson's driving shot as time
expired being the difference.

7. With UCSB off Bob Burton's Cal State Fullerton
Titans could have taken over sole possession of second place in the Big
West and that they did, scoring 60 points in the second half of their
100-94 win over UC Irvine. D.J. Seeley and Kwame Vaughn combined to
score 51 points as the Titans won despite not having the injured Omondi
Amoke at their disposal. Long Beach State is the class of the Big West,
but Fullerton is just as capable as UCSB of knocking the 49ers off in
the conference tournament.

Three Notable Performances

1. C Ben Aird (Utah Valley)
24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in the Wolverines' 99-97 win at NJIT.

2. C Al'Lonzo Coleman (Presbyterian)
26 points (10-14 FG), 12 rebounds and two assists in the Blue Hose's
94-74 win over VMI. Coleman's shot 20-for-28 from the floor over the
last two games.

3. G Alex Young (IUPUI)
34 points, seven rebounds and two steals in the Panthers' 76-74 overtime loss at Oral Roberts.

Saturday Recap: Five Ranked Teams Fall to Unranked Opponents

The first Saturday of the new year proved to be far more exciting than anticipated, much to the detriment of ranked teams who took their show on the road. Removing #7 Missouri and #20 Marquette, who both lost on the road to ranked opponents (more on both of those games below), five ranked teams lost to unranked opponents with four of the losses coming on the road. The Big East provided the most intrigue, with #8 Connecticut and #9 Georgetown falling on the road while #10 Louisville lost in double overtime at home. So which of the three defeats is most concerning? That's likely a toss-up between the Huskies and Cardinals.

Connecticut lost at Rutgers, who already owned a win at The RAC over then-#10 Florida, 67-60 with Eli Carter leading the Scarlet Knights with 19 points. It was a Saturday night to forget for Jeremy Lamb, who scored just eight points before fouling out. With the preseason All-America dealing with foul trouble for much of the night, Rutgers head coach Mike Rice was able to go with a zone defense to take advantage of the Huskies' issues in dealing with zones.

While UConn's 36.5% shooting from deep on the season isn't a great number it's definitely better than the 4-for-19 performance they put up against Rutgers. But of more concern than the lack of perimeter shooting is the lack of leadership and toughness for this group, something that was lost with the departure of Kemba Walker. And it's a sore subject for head coach Jim Calhoun, who returned to the bench after missing the last three games due to an NCAA suspension.

"There's not a lack of leadership, there's none," said Calhoun. Short, and to the point.

As for Louisville, their issues of running a half-court offense with cohesion has been well documented, and for that reason it's reasonable to say that Rick Pitino's team was given too much credit earlier in the season. Eric Atkins' shot with 17 seconds remaining gave the Fighting Irish a 65-63 lead and his two free throws in the final seconds of the second overtime sealed the 67-65 victory, giving Notre Dame their first win in the Commonwealth of Kentucky until 1980.

Louisville shot much better from the field, making 42.3% of their shots compared to 31.7% for Notre Dame. But when you hand the ball over 18 times, allowing Notre Dame to score 16 points off of turnovers, there's a good chance that the outcome won't be a positive one. The Cardinals now already have two home conference losses, and that's definitely not a good spot to be in if they're to contend for a Big East title.

"Hard fought game, but if you break it down, they made their free throws and we didn't," said Pitino. "To lose two home games in the Big East with the type of schedule we have is very destructive to say the least."

The other two losses to unranked opponents came in the SEC, with Florida kicking off the crazy day with a 67-56 loss to Tennessee (more on that below) and #15 Mississippi State getting lit up at Arkansas 98-88. The Bulldogs weren't much more than a sieve defensively, allowing the Razorbacks to shoot 56.5% from the field for the game. Rick Stansbury's team seemed to be in solid shape at the half, trailing by just six (43-37) despite turning the ball over eleven times to just two for Arkansas.

But that optimism was misguided as the Bulldogs allowed 55 points in the final 20 minutes with the Hogs making 67.9% of their shots. Julysses Nobles and B.J. Young scored 24 points apiece to lead Arkansas, who finished with five players in double figures, and they were also aided by the fact that three players scored 63 of Mississippi State's 88 points. Arnett Moultrie scored just nine but did grab ten rebounds before fouling out with over six minutes remaining, but his fifth foul essentially signaled the end of the game for Mississippi State. The lesson the Bulldogs learned was similar to that learned by the other ranked teams to fall: anyone can fall on any given day.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Kansas State takes advantage of #7 Missouri's lack of interior depth and hands the Tigers their first loss.
There were certainly concerns about how Frank Haith's team would deal
with bigger teams as the season wore on, as Missouri has just seven
scholarship players and two true frontcourt players. And at the "Octagon
of Doom" the Tigers got their first glimpse of how difficult things
could be, especially if their perimeter scorers aren't as productive as
expected. Missouri shot just 32.7% from the field and were out-rebounded
39-25 by #23 Kansas State in the Wildcats' 75-59 victory, suffering
their first loss of the season.

It didn't help matters that
starting forward Ricardo Ratliffe played just 14 foul-riddled minutes,
scoring two points and grabbing one rebounds. The Tigers can't afford
that level of production when their guards are on, much less when Phil
Pressey misses all six of his shots from the field and the team shoots
7-for-24 from three. Rodney McGruder led K-State with 20 points and as a
team the Wildcats assisted on 18 of their 28 field goals, resulting in
an efficiency (111.9) 21 points higher than what Missouri opponents
averaged on the season.

2. Syracuse runs out to a big lead and hangs on to beat Marquette in the Carrier Dome.
Thanks to a 23-1 run in the first half to turn a 12-11 lead into a
seemingly insurmountable 35-12 edge, top-ranked Syracuse seemed to be
well on their way to an emphatic victory over #20 Marquette. But Jim
Boeheim's team apparently left their intensity in the locker room, as
they came out of halftime flat while Buzz Williams' team displayed the
fight expected of his program. Marquette would eventually pull to within
two points (59-57) but could get no closer as the Orange would
eventually win 73-66, moving to 17-0 and by the end of the night sitting
alone atop the Big East standings.

Marquette could hit nothing
in the first half, shooting 30% from the field and going 1-for-7 from
beyond the arc. But led by Darius Johnson-Odom (19 points), Jae Crowder
(15 points, seven rebounds) and Junior Cadougan (10 points, five
assists) the Golden Eagles attacked the inside of the Syracuse zone,
resulting in quality looks that were few and far between in the first
half. But with Kris Joseph scoring 17 points and reserves C.J. Fair and
Dion Waiters combining to score 25 points Syracuse was able to sew
things up late, and while they weren't as efficient as usual the Orange
did assists on 19 of 24 made baskets. While the landscape beneath them
is too muddled to make sense of, it's pretty clear that the Orange are
the class of the Big East.

3. Florida has some things to work on defensively if they're to be a factor come March.
The first thing that will stick out in#13 Florida's 67-56 loss at
Tennessee is likely the fact that they scored just 56 points, shooting
35.7% from the field in doing so. But what should really be taken out of
the defeat is their play on the defensive end of the floor, because
despite the struggles offensively Billy Donovan's team won't lack for
scoring options. Simply put, can Florida get the stops needed when the
possessions become even bigger in March? If they're going to do so some
things will need to change, with one being the lack of ball pressure on
the perimeter. The issue against Tennessee wasn't about what the
Volunteers could do off the dribble but rather the lack of pressure on
entry passes.

On multiple occasions the lack of pressure on
passers allowed a Jeronne Maymon (12 points, seven rebounds) or Kenny
Hall (13 points, five rebounds) the time to walk their man up the lane
and out of prime defensive position. If Florida couldn't get away with
this against Tennessee, what are they going to do in their two meetings
with Kentucky? And it's not out of the realm of possibility that a team
like Alabama (or even Mississippi State) that has multiple big men could
give them a hard time inside. The Vols entered Saturday's game scoring
33% of their points from three, but they didn't have to do that as the
paint was open for business. Florida can't allow that to happen if
they're to reach their full potential, prolific offense or not.

4. George Mason beats Georgia State to take over sole possession of first place in the CAA.
In prior seasons the three-game stretch for Georgia State of
Drexel/VCU/George Mason would elicit bets of what the Panthers' combined
margin of defeat would be. To say the least things have changed under
Ron Hunter, as they'd won the first two games of that stretch going into
Saturday's showdown with the Patriots for sole possession of first
place in the CAA. But despite Ryan Pearson failing to make a single
field goal it was George Mason who was able to make the key baskets late
on their way to the 61-56 win. Neither team shot well from the field
and George Mason turned the ball over 19 times, but the deciding factor
was the charity stripe.

George Mason, who shot 67.3% from the
line on the season, made 18 of 21 on Saturday night and outscored the
Panthers by eight in that department. Vertail Vaughns (17 points) and
Mike Morrison (14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks) more than made up
for Pearson's 0-for-4 night, while the Georgia State combo of Josh
Micheaux and Devonta White shot a combined 3-for-15 (they entered the
game averaging a combined 20.2 points/game). Jihad Ali led Georgia State
with 19 points, and while they didn't win the Panthers have the look of
a team that could hang around the race throughout the season. But they
didn't have enough down the stretch, allowing the Patriots to take
control of the driver's seat a quarter of the way through CAA play.

5. Oral Roberts blows out South Dakota State and moves to 6-0 in the Summit League.
The matchup between the Golden Eagles and Jackrabbits was anticipated by
some due to not only the matchup of early Summit League POY
frontrunners Dominique Morrison (ORU) and Nate Wolters (SDSU) (Oakland's
Reggie Hamilton will also figure in the discussion). But they game
didn't live up to that, much to the detriment of the Jackrabbits, who
fell 97-75 in Tulsa. Morrison was outstanding as he finished with 38
points and seven rebounds, but he had plenty of help as Steven Roundtree
scored 17 off the bench and Michael Craion and Warren Niles scored 15
apiece.

Wolters led five SDSU players in double figures with 22
points to go along with six assists, but the Jackrabbits' biggest
problem was they they couldn't stop the Golden Eagles. ORU shot 60.7%
from the field on the night and 67.5% from two while also making ten of
twenty-one from beyond the arc, and when ORU's got it rolling like that
they're extremely difficult to beat at the Mabee Center. Oral Roberts
finished the game with an offensive efficiency of 154.0, scoring 1.5
points/possession on the night. To say the least South Dakota State will
do their best to make sure that doesn't happen in the rematch on
February 2nd.

Quick Hitters

1. Saturday marked the first step towards another March in which Virginia Tech
is once again discussed as a bubble team, with the Hokies losing at
Wake Forest 58-55. Erick Green was solid for the Hokies, finishing with
19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but more is needed from
Dorenzo Hudson (4-13, eight points) if they're to be a tournament team.

2. Entering the week with an 0-2 league record, UCLA
couldn't afford anything less than a split with the Arizona schools if
they wanted to be a contender in the Pac-12 race. Ben Howland's squad
did better than that, wrapping up a sweep with a 75-58 win over Arizona
State. Travis Wear scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and
Joshua Smith added 18 off the bench.

3. Few people gave Colorado
a shot at being in first place in the Pac-12 at this point in the
season, but there they sit after sweeping the Washington schools this
weekend. A big reason why: defense. In their 71-60 win over Washington
State, Colorado limited the Cougars to 36.5% shooting and none of their
three league opponents have shot over 40% from the field. Also in
forward Andre Roberson, Tad Boyle's got one of the most underrated
players in the country.

4. Of the four teams tied for first place in the MVC the most surprising has to be Illinois State, who beat Evansville 75-73 on a miraculous
shot by Jackie Carmichael. Carmichael, who finished with 17 points,
seven rebounds and four blocks, banked in his first career three-pointer
as time expired to win the game. We'll find out how much staying power
the Redbirds have immediately too, as they visit Wichita State and host
Creighton in their next two games.

5. In a matchup of teams undefeated in SoCon play Davidson
shot 60% from the field and made 11 three-pointers in their 96-74 win
over Georgia Southern. Jake Cohen (29 points) and De'Mon Brooks (24
points) combined to score 53 points with Cohen also grabbing 12 rebounds
in the victory.

6. There was also a matchup of undefeated teams
in the NEC, and that game wasn't particularly close either. Ken Horton
scored 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds while Robbie Ptacek scored 24
points and Kyle Vinales 18 in Central Connecticut State's 68-53 win over Robert Morris. Robert Morris shot just 30.3% from the field and turned the ball over 15 times in defeat.

7. Back in the ACC, Florida State
laid a serious egg in their ACC opener as they fell 79-59 at Clemson.
Not only did the Seminoles struggle offensively, shooting 35.5% and
turning the ball over 15 times, but they also allowed the Tigers to
shoot 60% from two and 49% overall. Leonard Hamilton's team can
ill-afford the defensive breakdowns they had on Saturday if they're
going to be a tournament team.

8. Both Temple and Saint Joseph's
dropped conference games at home on Saturday, with Dayton pulling away
late to be at the Owls 87-77 and Charlotte shocking the Hawks 57-52.
Archie Miller's Flyers picked up a key resume-building win, and
Charlotte's victory was a good step for Alan Major as he looks to
rebuild that program.

9. Bowling Green also provided a
surprise in their MAC opener as they beat Ohio 67-57. Jordon Crawford
led the way, scoring 16 points to go along with five assists, four
rebounds and two steals. BGSU turned the ball over 20 times (Crawford:
six turnovers) but the Bobcats shot 4-for-20 from three, alliowing the
home team to lock up the victory.

10. And in terms of a possible changing of the guard Nevada
may have struck the biggest blow, handing Utah State their first
conference home loss since 2007 by the final score of 78-71. Deonte
Burton, who finished with 25 points and five assists, provided the
dagger in the form of a four-point play with 37 seconds remaining while
Dario Hunt scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Five (plus one) Notable Performances

1. F Doug McDermott (Creighton)
44 points (18-23 FG), eight rebounds and two assists in the Bluejays' 92-83 win at Bradley.

2. F Dominique Morrison (Oral Roberts)
38 points (11-15 FG), seven rebounds and two assists in the Golden Eagles' 97-75 win over South Dakota State.

3. G Damian Lillard (Weber State)
38 points (8-14 3PT), five rebounds and five assists in the Wildcats' 88-81 win at Portland State.

4. G Isaiah Canaan (Murray State)
35 points (7-8 3PT), five assists and two rebounds in the Racers' 87-75 win at Austin Peay.

5. F Kevin Jones (West Virginia)
22 points (8-12 FG) and 16 rebounds in the Mountaineers' 74-62 win over #9 Georgetown.

Plus One: F Royce White (Iowa State)
18 rebounds, ten points and ten assists in the Cyclones' 74-50 demolition of Texas A&M in College Station.

Game of the Day: Stanford 103, Oregon State 101 (4 OT)
If you missed this one late that's too bad, because the Cardinal and Beavers combined to play an instant classic. The game didn't truly take off until the final moments of regulation, as Stanford's game-winning basket was ruled to have come after time expired. Stanford would eventually win as Roberto Nelson's three-point attempt as time expired missed the mark. Chasson Randle led six Stanford players in double figures with 24 points off the bench while Nelson and Jared Cunningham led six Oregon State players in double figures with 19 apiece.

Friday Afternoon Conference Tournament Happenings

You know it's March where there's midday college basketball to be discussed. Friday afternoon delivered just six games (one in progress) but there hasn't been a lack of drama. The Colonial, Missouri Valley and Southern conferences all had afternoon doubleheaders in their tournaments, with the MVC in the quarterfinals while the other two leagues are playing first round games today.

Colonial

(8) Georgia State 58, (9) UNC Wilmington 52

The collegiate career of UNC Wilmington guard Chad Tomko came to a tough end in the first game of the day in Richmond. Tomko led the Seahawks with 19 points but he shot 7-for-21 from the field and finished with four turnovers, the last of which came with just over a minute remaining and UNCW trailing by five (54-49). As a team UNCW shot a season-worst 29.5% from the field, and they could never get into a groove offensively. It also didn't help that the Seahawks made just 10 of 20 from the foul line. Josh Micheaux led the Panthers, who earn the honor of facing regular season champion George Mason at noon tomorrow, with 14 points while Eric Buckner added 12 and Jihad Ali grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with his nine points. And the play of Marques Johnson shouldn't be overlooked either as he dished out seven assists to just one turnover on the day. George Mason beat Georgia State 66-51 in their lone meeting on January 15th.

(5) Drexel 75, (12) Towson 69

Considering the fact that Towson went into today's game winless in CAA contests this season, many expected Bruiser Flint's Dragons to simply run through the Tigers on their way to a matchup with VCU on Saturday. But that wasn't the case as Pat Kennedy's squad remained competitive throughout, but they couldn't take advantage of an opportunity to tie the game late due in part to some bad foul shooting by Drexel. The Dragons survive with Samme Givens leading the way, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. Chris Fouch added 15 points of the bench while CAA All-Rookie Team member Frantz Massenat scored 13 and handed out five assists. Dartaye Ruffin, who had a rough time at the charity stripe late, grabbed 12 rebounds while also scoring eight points. Josh Brown led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points but they were whipped on the boards by a 43-26 margin.

Missouri Valley

(1) Missouri State 58, (8) Southern Illinois 56

Southern Illinois got out of the gates quickly, outscoring the regular season champion Bears 11-3 over the first 2:53 of the game and led 32-24 at the half. But despite those facts and a 56-47 lead with 2:49 remaining, the Salukis went out in heartbreaking fashion as a Kyle Weems basket with 1.4 seconds to go capped an 11-0 run to end the game. Adam Leonard led Missouri State with a game-high 20 points while Weems added 14, making up for a 5-for-18 afternoon from the field with the late-game heroics. Mamadou Seck led SIU with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Kendal Brown-Surles and Justin Bocot scored 11 apiece. Rebounding (38-28 edge) and points from the foul line (15-6 advantage) helped out Cuonzo Martin's club, who has to come out with more energy to start in tomorrow's semifinal against Creighton if they're to get to Sunday's final.

(5) Creighton 70, (4) Northern Iowa 67

The Blue Jays survived some suspect play late, most notably a missed layup that would have sealed the game by Jahenns Manigat, to beat the Panthers in the second quarterfinal of the day. Kwadzo Ahelegbe tried to draw a foul on the final shot of the game but Manigat stayed on the ground, not falling for the shot fake and forcing the senior to put up a challenged shot that fell short. Forwards Doug McDermott and Kenny Lawson, Jr. were the difference for the Blue Jays, with McDermott scoring 16 points (including nine of the first 11) to go along with seven rebounds and Lawson dropped in 18 off the bench. UNI took away the inside play that hurt them in the first half, but all that did was allow the preseason MVC Player of the Year to do damage via Creighton's pick-and-pop game. Antoine Young scored 11 points and racked up seven assists, being every bit the problem for the Panthers that he was in the regular season. Ahelegbe finished with 14 points and four assists, and Anthony James added 10 for UNI.

Southern

UNC Greensboro 71, Davidson 64

To say the least it's a bit weird to talk about Davidson in March with the subject being their loss in the first round of the conference tournament. But that's exactly what happened to Bob McKillop's team, as UNCG sent them home in the first game of the day in Chattanooga. It doesn't help matters when you shoot 24% from the field, as the Wildcats made just 18 of 75 shots on the day. Freshman Trevis Simpson led the Spartans with 15 points and 10 rebounds and teammates Brandon Evans (12) and Kyle Randall (11) each reached double figures as they won their seventh game of the season. Brendan McKillop led Davidson with 14 points and J.P. Kuhlman added 11. Next up for UNC Greensboro is a matchup with the top seed in the North Division, Western Carolina.

Appalachian State 65, Georgia Southern 57

Donald Sims led three Mountaineers in double figures with a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists in the win over Georgia Southern. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc (combined 3-for-19) but Appalachian State scored 27 of their 65 points from the foul line in the win. Ben Drayton III led the Eagles with 16 points but it wasn't enough to prevent the end of their season. Next up for Appalachian State is defending tournament champion Wofford in the second quarterfinal tomorrow.

Tonight's Games

Atlantic Sun Semifinals (ESPN3)
(1) Belmont vs. (5) Mercer
(2) East Tennessee State vs. (6) North Florida

CAA First Round (CAASports.com)
(10) Northeastern vs. (7) Delaware (29-27 Northeastern at halftime)
(11) William & Mary vs. (6) James Madison

Horizon Quarterfinals (ESPN3)
(6) Wright State vs. (3) Cleveland State (31-27 Cleveland State at halftime)
(5) Detroit vs. (4) Valparaiso

MAAC First Round (MAACSports.com)
(8) Niagara vs. (9) Marist
(7) Siena vs. (10) Manhattan

Missouri Valley Quarterfinals (FSN Midwest)
(7) Bradley vs. (2) Wichita State
(6) Evansville vs. (3) Indiana State

Ohio Valley Semifinals (ESPNU)
(4) Tennessee Tech vs. (1) Murray State
(3) Austin Peay vs. (2) Morehead State

Southern Conference First Round (SoConSports.com)
(N6) Samford vs. (S3) Furman
(S5) The Citadel vs. (N4) Elon

WCC First Round (ESPN3)
(8) Loyola Marymount vs. (5) Portland
(7) San Diego vs. (6) Pepperdine

Other Games (regular season)
Brown at Cornell
Princeton at Dartmouth
Penn at Harvard
Yale at Columbia
Akron at Kent State
Ohio at Miami (OH)

HOOPS TALK LIVE SATURDAY 11am-NOON

MAAC Hoops

Poll: Who Will Win the Southern Conference?

conference tournament previews, in which I run down all the teams involved, give

particular conference, and I’m sure there are some mis-characterizations on some
players I’ve seen sparingly at best, so please add your thoughts in the
comments. Anyway, with no further ado, the preview follows below:

Between Davidson, Charleston and The Citadel, the South
division should dominate the tournament, with the hosts Chattanooga a having a
decent shot to make the final, but not looking good against the dominant

The Mocs may be North Division champions, but that’s more
about the strength of the South than a ringing endorsement of their play, as
Chattanooga has just barely been better than a .500 team. They put up a lot of
threes, but make a fairly poor percentage, and are excellent at getting to the
free throw line, where they shoot just 65%, adding up to a lot of wasted
chances. Chattanooga has struggled to stop the three-point shot, allowing
opponents to hit 38% of attempts, and their defensive style means more than 45%
of opponents’ shots come from behind the arc, more than any other team in the
country. It doesn’t take much statistics knowledge to realize how damaging that
is. The saving grace for the Mocs’ defense is that they force turnovers and do
well on the defensive glass, but they are still only an average team at best.

three-point shooting on nearly 300 attempts. He doesn’t tend to do much else
besides score, but when you’re this good a scorer, that’s more than enough.

While the Wildcats’ hopes for an NCAA at-large bid basically
disappeared with a two-week period that saw them drop three games, including
both their conference losses, they are still heavy favorites to win the
conference tournament, and clearly the SoCon’s dominant team. While the Davidson
offense gets a lot of focus because of Stephen Curry, the team’s major asset is
its defense, the best in the conference by a wide, wide margin. It holds
opponents under 40% from the field, and forces a lot of turnovers, in the top 25
in the nation in both areas. If it has a defensive weakness, it’s a tendency to
commit a few too many fouls. Offensively, the Wildcats’ shooting percentages
aren’t particularly good, but their turnover rate is one of the country’s
lowest.

6-3 JR Stephen Curry, 28.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5.8 APG, 2.6 SPG,
55.1 eFG% - You might have heard of this Curry fellow, as he only happens to be
the nation’s leading scorer. He also leads the conference in both assists and
steals, and is among the national elite in both of those categories. The amazing
thing about Curry is how he manages to stay so efficient when he gets so many
possessions; a lot of players have shot as well as he has, percentage-wise, but
only Curry can maintain that level over nearly 40% of his team’s shots. He may
not get enough credit as a ball distributor, as he has a great assist rate with
very few turnovers.

- Lovedale is a quality defensive player, and important to Davidson’s strong
play at that end of the floor; he leads the team in rebounding and shot-blocks,
and is an important influence inside. He’s not a huge scorer, but he doesn’t
need to be: he takes his chances pretty well when he gets them.

I promise to stop harping on it, but it’s a little unfair to
the South division that the North #2 is has actually been outscored in
conference play, yet still earns a first round bye. The Catamounts have allowed
the highest opponent FG% in the conference, including 53% on two-point attempts,
and commit more than 21 fouls a game, but actually have a league average defense.
This is due to good rebounding and the best rate of forcing turnovers in the
SoCon. Western Carolina is also an average shooting team, but thanks to its
ability on the offensive glass, gets a lot of second-chance opportunities.

While much of the talk about the SoCon has focused solely on
Davidson, one of the great stories in college basketball this season managed to
gain some well-deserved attention when the Citadel beat Davidson in
mid-February. This was the highlight of a run that saw the Bulldogs go 11-1 over
the last month or so of the season, and the first time that the team had reached
20 wins in thirty years. If any team has a chance of stopping the Curry show
from making a stop at the NCAA tournament, this looks like it. The Citadel has
depended on a dynamite defense, the only non-Davidson unit to hold opponents
below a point per possession on the year. It managed this with tough perimeter
defending, allowing just 39% on opponent three-point attempts, and good
defensive rebounding. The Citadel’s offense is only at the league average, but
it’s a solid shooting team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, good enough to
carry them through a defensively deficient league.

Samford’s overall record is a little misleading, they’ve been
an .500 team in efficiency margin, though they don’t have the wins to show for
it. The Bulldogs run one of the country’s slowest offenses, and take 50% of
their field goal attempts from behind the arc. This has helped their inside play
somewhat, as they are among the best two-point shooting teams in the country,
but they’ve struggled with offensive rebounding and turnovers. Samford is also
poor at defensive rebounding, and is vulnerable to opponents inside, but forces
a lot of turnovers, rarely fouls and gets teams it plays to shoot a lot of
threes.

separate categories, including rebounds and assists. A lot of this is due to the
fact that Samford has tended to spread out its possessions and playing time, as
his rates aren’t great, but he plays a lot. He’s a good shooter who scores
mostly inside, and has a good complimentary long-distance shot.

The Cougars are the fourth favorite for the tournament title,
and twice fought Davidson down to the final possession, including causing the
Wildcats’ first conference loss in early February. They feature the conference’s
best offense, hitting shots well inside and outside, and rarely giving up the
ball. Charleston’s defense has only been average, and its weak spot has been
rebounding, as opponents have managed to get back a lot of their own misses.
With the Cougars forcing few turnovers, this has meant a lot of chances for
opposing teams to score.

The Mountaineers just barely finished with a positive
efficiency margin, and featured a pretty solid conference offense. They are the
best pure shooters in the SoCon, leading the league in free throw and
three-point percentage, and get back a lot of the shots they do miss. They need
to maximize these chances, as they generally lose out in the turnover battle by
a wide margin, the worst in the conference in both forcing and committing them.
The problem that Appalachian St. has had is that its opponents make a lot of
shots, and while it is as good on the defensive glass as the offensive glass,
it doesn’t force enough misses to really take advantage.

Wofford is the last of the teams in the top 8 of the
conference; after it, there is a large drop-off to the teams in the league
basement. It’s had a pretty good offensive showing, making a fair number of its
threes, avoiding turnovers, and doing well on the offensive glass. The Terriers’
problem has been defensive, especially from behind the arc, where opponents have
shot 39%.

6-6 SO Noah Dahlman, 17.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 61.1 eFG% - Dahlman
is one of the SoCon’s most efficient players, as he does a lot of things really
well, an over 60% shooter who is an excellent offensive rebounder and has
committed just 37 turnovers all season.

6-2 JR Junior Salters, 15.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 54.4 eFG% - Salters
is a good three-point shooter who has seen his scoring numbers drop over the
month of February, and will need to find some form if Wofford is to make any
noise in the tourney.

North #5 – Elon Phoenix (10-19, 7-13) ; Efficiency Margin:
-0.083

All of the teams from here and below have averaged less than
a point-per-possession offensively, and all are underdogs in their opening round
games. Elon is the best of these teams, as it has an above-average defense,
holding opponents to a fairly low percentage from behind the arc and forcing a
lot of turnovers. The Phoenix have needed this defense to be good, as they’ve
had the conference’s second worst offense, shooting just 43% from the field and
not being able to get their misses back very often, resulting in a lot of
one-and-done possessions.

6-8 SR Ola Atoyebi, 14.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 57.3 eFG% - Atoyebi

6-5 SR Brett James, 13.1 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 1.5 BPG, 46.4
eFG% - James is an impressive defensive player, leading the team in both blocks
and steals, but his relatively poor shooting, including just 30% on
three-pointers, holds back his offensive game.

South #5 – Georgia Southern Eagles (8-21, 5-15) ; Efficiency
Margin: -0.108

Georgia Southern seemed to be going pretty well when it was
5-4 in conference in the final week of January, but totally lost its way from
then on, losing 11 straight games to finish just one game out of a tie for last
place. The Eagles have fallen this far because of their conference-worst defense,
which has been one of the country’s worst in several areas, allowing opponents
to shoot 38% on threes and 52% on twos, and getting very few defensive rebounds.
Their offense has been better, but still not particularly good, below average in
pretty much every statistical category.

5-10 FR Ben Drayton, 11.7 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 57.0 eFG% - Drayton
has been an excellent three-point shooter, over 50% from behind the arc, and
while he hasn’t taken a huge number of them, he’s made enough to raise his
efficiency. Drayton’s scoring average is somewhat dampened by his start, in
which he played little; in the last month he’s averaged more than 17 points a
game.

6-2 JR Antonio Hanson, 11.9 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 53.2 eFG% - Hanson
hasn’t shot as good a percentage as Drayson, but he’s taken more threes than
anyone else on the team, and made nearly 40% of them. His only real contribution
is with his shot, so when he can’t get it to fall, he’s pretty much invisible
statistically.

North #6 – NC Greensboro Spartans (5-24, 4-16) ; Efficiency
Margin: -0.114

Only Georgia Southern has defended worse than the Spartans in
the SoCon this year, despite the fact that Greensboro has been better than
average at defending shots. The problem for Greensboro has been limiting the
number of chances its opponents get; it rarely gets opponents to turn the ball
over, and picks up relatively few of its opponents’ misses. The Spartans have
also struggled on the offensive side of the ball, sitting second to last in the
conference in shooting on both three-pointers and two-pointers.

6-5 JR Ben Stywall, 11.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 52.5 eFG% -
Stywall is one of the SoCon’s better rebounders, and is pretty efficient on the
offensive end, shooting 52% from the field and getting to the free throw line a
lot. His 59% shooting at the stripe is a drop-off from previous seasons and an
area he needs to improve.

6-4 JR Mikko Koivisto, 12.5 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 50.5 eFG%
- The Vantaa, Finland native is the only major three-point shooting threat on
the Spartans, and the team’s leading scorer, though he tends to be inconsistent.

South #6 – Furman Paladins (6-23, 4-16) ; Efficiency Margin:
-0.146

Last NCAA Tournament bid: 1980 (1st Round)

Furman is the weakest team in the Southern Conference, with
two of its six wins on the season coming against non-D1 opponents. It is the
conference’s worst shooting team, barely managing to crack 40% from the field,
and is one of the SoCon’s worst teams at committing turnovers. Defensively,
they’ve been pretty weak inside, and while they’ve done a decent job of forcing
turnovers, they just haven’t been good enough to cover for their offensive woes.

6-2 SO Jordan Miller, 13.7 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 42.0 eFG% -
Miller takes a lot of the Paladins’ shots, and is the team’s leading scorer, but
his percentages are weak, especially his sub-40% two-point shooting.

6-5 SO Bryson Barnes, 8.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 48.5 eFG% -
Barnes has only started 10 games, but leads the team in both rebounding and
shot-blocks, and is a decent inside scorer. He’s increased his role in recent
games, averaging 12 points in his last six games.

Georgia Southern Beats Houston in First Competitive Game

MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF HOUSTON 65-63

DURHAM, N.C. --- Georgia Southern held Houston scoreless for the final 2:42 and got a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds from senior Trumaine Pearson (Stuart, Fla.) to win 65-63 Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The game, which opened the 2008-09 season, was a part of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. The Eagles will now play the winner of Duke-Presbyterian Tuesday night at 9 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

"It was obviously a hard-fought win," said GSU head coach Jeff Price. "You had two teams with a lot of new players early in the season and two teams that really struggled offensively. We were really solid on the defensive end. Our zone was good in the first half and we had to get stops in the second half with our man-to-man and we did."

GSU held a 65-50 lead with just under four minutes left on a tip-in by senior Julian Allen (Waterbury, Conn.). Desmond Wade hit a long 3-pointer with 2:42 to play, but the Cougars missed their last three shots and committed two turnovers in the final 1:31.

"You could really tell our defense was way ahead of our offense at this point in the season," said Price. "I thought our zone threw them off in the first half then we switched defenses a little bit in the second half. Our man-to-man, when we had to get stops at the end of the game, we did. We showed a lot of heart and were really scrappy."

Five of Georgia Southern's six newcomers saw action, including junior Sandy Perry (Perth Amboy, N.J.) who scored 12 on 6-of-10 shooting.

"I thought Sandy Perry was really good - he stood out and played well," said Price. "Antonio Hanson struggled a little bit from the field but he's going to be a good player. We played our two freshmen in the first half - not a lot - but we wanted them to get a feel for the game. We just have to continue to play those guys."

Pearson notched his first career double-double and shot 7-for-10 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from long range.

"He's been outstanding," said Price. "He's shown consistency through two scrimmages and now the first game so we're really happy with his play."

- GSU -

Duke or
Carolina? BC or UMASS? Gonzaga or Washington.. or Washington State? What is the
best program in each state? While there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there
are great debates to be had in loaded regions like California, North Carolina,
and Texas. The State of '08 is a ranking of every program in every
state.. based mostly on recent success (the last five years) mixed in
with subjective factors such as conference prestige, historical success, and
overall program direction.

GEORGIA
TECH - After making the National title game in 2004, and being good again in
2005, Paul Hewitt was on the verge of entering the coaching stratosphere. But
the past few seasons have been disappointing, and Tech should once again finish
in the bottom half of the ACC. In Hewitt's eight seasons, the Jackets have never
finished below 7-9 in ACC play.. and going 7-9 in the ACC is more impressive
than winning most conference titles.

GEORGIA
- The Bulldogs are coming off one of the more shocking seasons in NCAA history.
After a completely sub-par season, which included a 4-12 SEC record, the team
somehow managed to run through the SEC Tournament, knocking off 4 other
postseason teams along the way. But don't be fooled by that March magic, Georgia
still hasn't really recovered from the mess that Jim Harrick created, and
2008-09 should be similar to last year (at least in terms of the 4-12 SEC
record..)

GEORGIA
SOUTHERN - Although Georgia Southern hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since
1992, the program has been consistently solid in Jeff Price's 9-year tenure. In
2006, he guided the Eagles to the NIT, where they lost to Charlotte in the
opening round. Last year was another solid campaign, which included 13 wins in
the Southern Conference, and upset victories over highly touted UAB and
Cleveland State.

GEORGIA
STATE - The Panthers haven't had much success since making the move from the
Atlantic Sun to the CAA. In three years in the more competitive league, GSU has
hovered around the bottom of the standings and rarely been competitive against
the better teams. But there was serious improvement last year, a win over George
Mason, and a ton of close losses (including a one-point loss in the CAA
tourney). 2008-09 could be Georgia State's best season since Lefty Driesell's
imprint was still on the program.

MERCER
- After an impressive 2003 campaign in which the Bears went 14-2 in the A-Sun,
the program's fortunes have steadily gone down hill. Since that time, Mercer
hasn't even won a game in the A-Sun tournament. Even worse, Mercer has finished
behind D1 newcomer Kennesaw State each year since the Owls joined the A-Sun in
2006.

6.
KENNESAW STATE - Considering the Owls are only entering their 4th full
season of D1 basketball, the results haven't been half bad. They've finished 7-9
in the Atlantic Sun the past two seasons, and knocked off conference leader
Belmont (a Top 100 team) in January. The next step for the program is to find a
way to win some games away from home.

SAVANNAH STATE - From 2003 to 2006, this was simply the worst program in the
country. I'm sure many fans remember the embarrassing 0-28 season of 2005. But
there's been major improvement in the last two years including 10 D1 wins in
2008. Last year's RPI of 254 trumped in-state rivals Georgia State, Kennesaw
State, and Mercer. I give Kennesaw the nod though due to their conference
alignment, and because the Savannah State's horrible run isn't far enough in the
past.
