UNC 79 - Duke 71: Box Score of the Day

It might be involve a huge upset, a big personal effort, some odd statistical, occurrences, or other intriguing tidbit.

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. UNC's 79-71 win over North Carolina.

With Duke trailing 70-68 with 3:25 left, it looked like episode #227 of this fine rivalry would turn into a classic.. but the Heels pulled away late for a rather anti-climactic win. UNC locked up the ACC crown and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament as well. A lot of talk was made about Ty Lawson's injured toe, but did anyone really think he wasn't going to play?

In a lot of respects, this game played out just how you'd expect. UNC was able to control the boards against a Duke team lacking a true big man. (A lot of talk was made that Lawson is what separates UNC from everyone else.. but what Duke truly needs is not Lawson, but a legitimate big man who can handle the likes of Hansbrough or Thompson). Duke tried to outshoot their opponent, but it didn't work against a UNC team that has a much more versatile attack. Singler kept them alive early, while Scheyer did his best late. Ultimately, UNC just had too many options. (Again, its not merely Lawson that separates UNC from Duke, but that UNC has 6-7 offensive weapons, while Duke has 3-4.)

Did we learn anything about UNC today? Not really. The win just re-affirmed what we already knew: this is a team on the verge of making a legitimate National Title run. I think we learned more about Duke: this is a team, despite the loss, that's playing their best ball of the season.. who the doubters will probably have to to pay serious attention to.

Wake Forest 65 - Maryland 63: Box Score of the Day

Today's pick is.. Wake Forest's 65-63 win over Maryland.

In my estimation, this was a make or break game for Maryland. Up 7 at the half, and 6 with 6:16 left, it looked like Maryland was going to make it. But then a pair of Wake threes and an untimely 5-minute scoring drought may have broke Maryland's season barring some kind of heroic ACC Tournament effort. This loss drops them to 4-10 against Top 50 teams, which along with a 4-7 record away from, doesn't bode well for an at-large bid.

Maryland's big win over UNC and their close losses to Duke & Wake all featured solid defensive efforts. They held UNC to 38% shooting, Duke to 43%, and Wake to 40%. The Terps simply don't have many offensive weapons, so the increased defensive pressure at least kept them in these big games.

The reason they were able to topple UNC, but not Duke & Wake? Greivis Vasquez. He went off for 34-points against UNC, but averaged just 13 on 34% shooting against Wake & Duke. In each of the recent big games, Maryland got a good secondary effort from a support player, 19 from Neal last night, 19 for Milbourne against Duke, and 22 from Tucker against UNC. But ultimately they needed at least 20+ from Vasquez to have a chance.

Lastly, and this is nothing new for Maryland, but the Terps got crushed on the boards last night. The defensive intensity, which led to a good amount of forced turnovers, wasn't enough to overcome a -19 rebounding margin. This was even worse than the -12 against Duke and the -8 against UNC.

Xavier Loses Again: Box Score of the Day

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. Charlotte's upset win over #17 Xavier.

For the third time in a row Xavier lost on the road, this time to 10-15 Charlotte. The recent struggles started after an 11 game winning streak that saw the Musketeers move into the Top 10, and now their in danger in falling out of the Top 20. What's happened? There are a couple of trends in the three losses.

Turnovers - In each of the three loses, Xavier had between 14-15 turnovers.

Lack of assists - Xavier hit a low with just 7 assists in tonight's loss, and has had a negative a/to ratio in the losses.

Poor FG% - They've shot under 45% in each of the losses.

Poor 3-Pt% - BJ Raymond did get hot in the close Duquesne defeat, but they've hovered around 25% against UD & Charlotte.

Lack of steals - In the three games, they've combined for just 9 steals total.

What does all this mean? It means that Xavier's point guard deficiencies, which they somehow managed to skirt by early in the year are finally catching up. Defensively, they've still been solid, and they don't get outplayed on the boards, but ultimately you're not going to go far if you turn the ball over and don't hit shots.

Butler Falls to Lowly Loyola: Box of the Day

Today's pick is.. Loyola's 71-67 Win Over Butler.

When Butler lost to Green Bay two weeks ago, it was disappointing, but not Earth-shattering. The Phoenix are a solid team, and it was on the road. Today's home loss to lowly Loyola (Ill), who entered with an RPI of 218th, and having lost six straight, does raise some questions. The Bulldogs, who entered the week at 15th in the AP Poll, will surely drop.. but by how much? Are they in danger of falling out of the Top 20? Top 25? And with a challenging game at Davidson coming up, not to mention 3 other league games, and the HL Tournament, are they no longer a lock for the NCAA Tournament?

Statistically, Butler wasn't dominated in any category. Matt Howard set a career high with 30 points, and the team shot a respectable 44% from the floor. Hayward's 6 turnovers look bad, but the team's 12 total TO's are in line with the numbers they put up in wins. Butler's 23% shooting from three obviously didn't help the cause either.

But there were a couple major differences in today's loss, as compared to their 23 point over the Ramblers in Chicago. In that game, Butler dominated the boards, but here that advantage was nullified. The other difference was the sudden emergence of Jordan Hicks for Loyola. Hicks came into the game averaging 2.9 ppg, and he scored 0 points in 16 minutes in the first meeting. But today, he lit up the scoreboard for 23 points and 8 boards. Hicks transformation started 3 games ago against Wright State when he broke out for 14 points on 5-8 shooting. He followed that up with 4-4 shooting in mostly mop up duty against Valpo, into today's all-star performance. Besides Hicks, Loyola also got a standout performance from Justin Cerasoli. Fans around the country may be familiar with Cerasoli, as he's had stops at Seton Hall, Ole Miss, and now Loyola.

Notre Dame Snaps Losing Streak: Box of the Day

Today's pick is.. Notre Dame's 90-57 win over Louisville.

Is it possible that a team possessing a 7-game losing streak on their resume could still make the NCAA Tournament? The Fighting Irish are going to try and push the limits. Look at the games remaining on their schedule: home against USF, Rutgers, St. John's. Winnable road games against Providence & West Virginia. If the Irish somehow can get back over .500 in Big East play, you'd have to once again consider them for a fringe at-large bid. Of course, that's a lot of what if wins that may never come to fruition. But if they do, you can owe it to this blow out win over #7 Louisville.

As always with Notre Dame, you start with Luke Harangody. His 32 & 17 follows up what was perhaps the worst ever performance of his life against UCLA. But the real difference today, and perhaps you can simply chalk it up to chance, was that Ryan Ayers & Kyle McAlarney both had their best shooting days in about a month. The two combined for 10-16 from three. Behind those threes, and Notre Dame's dominance on the boards, Louisville had little chance.

Louisville, you may remember, was the team that started Notre Dame's losing streak by knocking them off in OT. Terrence Williams was a monster that night, but on Thursday he was barely visible with just 5 points and 4 boards (vs. 24 & 16 the first meeting). More troublesome though for Louisville is the play of Samardo Samuels. The freshman big man hasn't played over 25 minutes in a month, and has hauled in a whopping 9 boards in the last 4 games. 6-9, 260 lbs and 2 rpg don't go together.

Kentucky Edges Florida 68-65: Box Score of the Day

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. Kentucky's 68-65 Win Over Florida.

Trailing by 6 with 4 minutes to go, Jodie Meeks came alive and carried Kentucky on his back. He scored 10 points down the stretch including the game-winning three with 5 seconds left. Meeks' heroics not only saved the game for Kentucky, but potentially their NCAA Tournament at-large hopes. UK entered the game having lost 3 games in a row, including two at home.

For Florida, not surprising that Nick Calathes was basically a one-man show. The sophomore guard set a career high with 33 points, but he was held without a field goal in the final 4 minute period that Meeks took over. The Gators didn't shoot particularly well, finishing at 40% from the floor, and missing 9 big free throws. Despite these poor shooting #'s, Florida was kept in the game due to Kentucky's usual turnover issues.

A couple other statistical notes. Kevin Galloway, who had only managed 6 assists since New Year's, set a career high out of nowhere with 9 assists. Rarely used big man Josh Harrellson scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting, including 6 points in a crucial stretch mid-way through the 2nd half.

VT Escapes in OT: Box score of the Day

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. Virginia Tech's OT win over NC State.

When breaking down a team's resume, people tend to focus on the few best wins, such as the Hokies 78-71 win over Wake Forest. But sometimes hard fought victories over mediocre opponents can be just as important. Having lost two games in a row, and trailing by 18 with 13 minutes left.. Virginia Tech made a furious come back to salvage a win over lowly NC State, and remain firmly in the thick of the NCAA Tournament race.

While Dorenzo Hudson started the comeback with a big three, it was the Hokie's usual three-headed monster that completed the deal. AD Vassallo, Jeff Allen, and Malcolm Delaney combined for 63 points, and hit the big shots that pushed the game to OT.

NC State was led by Ben McCauley, who had a monster game of 25 & 15. This was the most points McCauley has scored since January of 2007 (when he had 26). The Wolfpack shot relatively well from the floor, got to the line frequently, and held their own on the glass.. but were killed by turnovers. A lack of point guard leadership has plagued this team all season, and no one on the roster even averaged 3 assists per game.

Utah State Wins Again: Box Score of the Day

It might be involve a huge upset, a big personal effort, some odd statistical occurrences, or other intriguing tidbit.

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. Utah St's 78-59 win over NMSU.

This might seem like an odd choice for Box of the Day. A Top 25 Aggies squad beat a mediocre New Mexico St team by 19 at home, big deal. Which is the point: that Utah St. wins have become a given by now, yet virtually no ink has been spilled about them.

Last night's Box is a great example of what makes Utah St so tough. First, notice that the Aggies shot 50% from the floor and 55% from three. For most teams this is a huge outburst of offensive efficiency, but for USU its simply par for the course. According to Ken Pomeroy, Utah St is 3rd in the country in effective Fg%, and 2nd in raw offensive efficiency (behind UNC, not bad company). The Aggies play a very low-tempo game that is all about maximizing points per possession. They manage to shoot well from all spots on the floor, in the top 31 of FG%, FT%, and 3-Pt%. You see these numbers at work in the Box below (although reserve Brady Jardine killed the FT% by going 1-5).

When you talk about high % offense, it starts with a pair of forwards: Gary Wilkinson & Tai Wesley. Both shoot above 60% on the season, and are amongst the national leaders. Wilkinson, who was 5-5 last night, has made 19 of his last 22 shots.

Indiana Gets First Big Ten Win: Box Score of the Day

Today's pick is.. Indiana's 68-60 Win over Iowa.

Last week, we had a little fun at Indiana's expense, making fun of the Hoosiers for their horrid (but expected under the circumstances) start. Today, as predicted though, the Hoosiers finally got off the Big Ten shnide by knocking off fellow conference cellar-dweller Iowa. If the Hoosiers (6-15, 1-8) were ever going to win a conference game, a home game against Iowa was the one.

What stands out for the Hoosiers is the play of Juco newcomer Devan Dumes. Dumes, the Hoosiers leading scorer and best player, came up clutch with his best ever game: 27 points on an amazingly efficient 8-9 shooting from the floor. He hit 5-5 from three, and 6-8 free throws. This led to a ridiculous average of 3 points per shot attempt. Such efficiency is unheard of.

It is no surprise that Indiana won due to the scoring prowess of Dumes. Their closest Big Ten defeat (2 points to Northwestern) came when Dumes set his previous high of 25 points. And their worst defeat (31 points) came when Dumes only played a couple minutes against Illinois. Indiana struggles in large part because they're one of the worst offensive teams in the country. 245th according to Ken Pomeroy's adjusted offensive rankings. No other Big Ten team is below 90th in the country. Dumes no doubt has a couple 20+ outbursts left in him, which could perhaps lead to a few more league wins.

For Iowa, they didn't get destroyed in most statistical categories, but you have to wonder how they allowed a poor offensive team to shoot 49% from the floor and 53% from three. Their offensive star was Matt Gatens, a freshman who tied a career high with 22 points. Gatens came into college with the reputation of being a three-point gunner, which has proved to be true. But in recent weeks, he's shown an improved ability to contribute within the arc. He's certainly a player with a bright future down the line.

SDSU Beats UNLV in OT: Box Score of the Day

Box Score of the Day:

Today's pick is.. SDSU's Overtime Win over UNLV.

The MWC had a very successful non-conference season, which has led to high computer rankings, and the assumption that the league will get at least two bids. However, the main teams you hear about receiving those bids are UNLV, BYU, and even Utah. However, after knocking of UNLV in Thomas & Mack last night, it is San Diego State that leads the conference with a 6-2 record. The Aztecs, 16-5 overall, were the 48th ranked team in CHN's preseason preview and are hovering around that number in the RPI right now. This was however, their first true "big" win away from home, and a very important one if SDSU should be fighting with UNLV for the final Tourney spot.

For UNLV, it simply came down to not hitting shots. Most of the stats were relatively even, with UNLV getting a couple extra possessions due to better offensive rebounding and forced turnovers, but they couldn't buy a bucket. The Rebels leading scorers, Wink Adams & Tre'Von Willis combined for just 5-23 shooting. Ouch. Adams had finally hit a groove the past few weeks after a sluggish start to the season, so this bad game was unexpected.

For SDSU, the star of the game was forward Kyle Spain, who led the team with 17 points, 8 coming in OT. Besides the points, he also added 5 boards, 5 steals, and 4 assists.
