Hilltoppers Cap Improbable Run With a Sun Belt Title

Sometimes in conference tournaments, especially for one-bid conferences, the winner is the team that's playing the best basketball at that time as opposed to the team that showed itself to be the best throughout the season. But how often does the winning team not only play their best basketball at the right time but also successfully navigates an in-season coaching change? That's exactly what happened for Western Kentucky, who will make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2009 as a result of their 74-70 win over North Texas.

Ray Harper took over for the fired Ken McDonald on January 6th in a move many criticized nationally. But he was able to develop the young Hilltoppers enough to not only earn the job full-time but also lead the team to the Big Dance, something few people expected to happen. Tuesday's star was forward/center Teeng Akol, who more than held his own inside against the Mean Green's Tony Mitchell. Akol finished with 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting, also grabbing five rebounds and blocking four shots, and George Fant added 17 points and six boards.

"I'm just happy for these young men," said Harper. "Give them credit, they bought in to what we were telling them. And I knew when we left Bowling Green, Kentucky...that we had a chance."

Drawing a player like Mitchell isn't easy for any big man, but Akol showed himself to be more than capable of taking on the challenge. Mitchell finished with 18 points and five rebounds, but despite four starters reaching double figures the Mean Green fell short. But the decisive blow was struck by WKU's lone senior, as guard Kahlil McDonald knocked down a three-pointer with 1:12 remaiing to give the Hilltoppers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Freshman guard Derrick Gordon was quiet offensively as he scored just eight points, but the New Jersey native has been a key component all season long.

Under Harper maybe next season would have been the year in which people expected WKU to get things headed in the right direction, but thanks to a staff and a group of players who continued to work that time is now. WKU could end up with a trip to Dayton, but at this point you'll be hard-pressed to find a Hilltopper upset with that possible development. Only two months ago many left this team for dead, never thinking that an NCAA tournament appearance was possible.

Three Notable Performances

1. G/F Javorn Farrell (Massachusetts)
20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the Minutemen's 92-83 win over Duquesne in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.

2. F/C Teeng Akol (Western Kentucky)
23 points (9-11 FG), five rebounds and four blocked shots in the Hilltoppers' 74-70 win over Nroth Texas to win the Sun Belt tournament.

3. F Ian Hummer (Princeton)
18 points, ten rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals in the Tigers' 62-52 win over Penn.

Tuesday's Conference Tournament Primer

While there's plenty of conference tournament action on Tuesday's
schedule, and three bids to be distributed, there's also a huge game in
the Ivy League as Penn (19-11, 11-2) visits rival Princeton
(18-11, 9-4). What's on the line for the Quakers? A share of the Ivy
League title with Harvard, which would force a one-game playoff between
the two teams at a site to be determined. Jerome Allen's Quakers are led
by the outstanding senior guard triumvirate of Zack Rosen, Tyler
Bernardini and Miles Cartwright, with Rosen being the likely choice for
Ivy League Player of the Year.

Rosen (18.5 ppg, 5.3 apg) has
scored 20 points or more in four of Penn's last six games, and in Penn's
82-67 win over Princeton back on January 30th he scored 28 and dished
out five assists. Job one for any team taking on Penn is to limit
Rosen's impact on the game, but that's a task that's far easier said
than done. And in most instances this season it's fallen short.
Bernardini had to deal with foul trouble in that game yet still managed
to score 14 points in 25 minutes, and the Quakers will need him to snap
out of his current slump tonight if they're to force a playoff.

While
Penn's won seven straight it isn't as if the Tigers come in playing
poorly, as they've won seven of their last eight. Forward Ian Hummer's
been a critical factor all season long for Mitch Henderson, leading the
team in both scoring and rebounding and ranking second on the team with
three assists per game. Hummer's a versatile forward who can be a
difficult matchup for teams, and he combined with center Brendan
Connolly to score 36 points in the first meeting (21 for Hummer).

Those
two got their points but rebounding was a problem at the Palestra, as
Penn grabbed 13 offensive boards and out-rebounded the Tigers 33-19.
Pretty easy to figure out what Princeton needs to change from that first
meeting if they're to defend their home floor. Princeton also has
senior Douglas Davis in the backcourt, who averages 13.0 points per
game, and point guard T.J. Bray has proven himself to be effective as
both a distributor (3.6 apg) and a rebounder (4.5 rpg) at his position.
If Penn wins the battle on the glass and shoots 10-for-18 from three as
they did at The Palestra, there will likely be a playoff this weekend.
But with Princeton playing better now than they were at the end of
January, look for the rematch to be a 40-minute dogfight.

Atlantic 10 - First Round
#9 Duquesne at #8 Massachusetts, 7:00 p.m.
#12 Charlotte at #5 Saint Joseph's, 7:00 p.m.
#10 Richmond at #7 La Salle, 7:00 p.m.
#11 George Washington at #6 Dayton, 7:00 p.m.

The
four winners will advance to the quarterfinals in Atlantic City, where
the top four seeds await. Tonight's action is most important for Saint
Joseph's and Dayton, two teams clinging to hopes of making a run at an
NCAA tournament bid. For that to happen one would think that the Hawks
and Flyers need to get to Sunday's final given recent missteps, but the
simplest thing to do at this point is go out and win; live to fight
another day.

Carl Jones, Langston Galloway and C.J. Aiken have
the ability to lead Saint Joseph's on a run, and it's not like Archie
Miller's Flyers lack for talent either. But keep an eye on La Salle, who
has one of the best point guards in the conference in Tyreek Duren, and
that 8/9 matchup could be the most entertaining given the pressure
applied by both Duquesne and UMass.

Big East - First Round
# 16 DePaul vs. #9 Connecticut, Noon (ESPN2)
# 13 Pittsburgh vs. # 12 St. John's, 2:00 p.m. (ESPN2)
# 15 Providence vs. # 10 Seton Hall, 7:00 p.m. (ESPNU)
# 14 Villanova vs. # 11 Rutgers (ESPNU)

So,
UConn begins their Big East Championship in the same spot they began
their "five games in five days" run last season. But it's an entirely
different scenario for the Huskies, who were safely in the NCAA
tournament last season, and they had an assertive leader in Kemba
Walker. That guy hasn't stepped up yet for the Huskies, who are also
taking a DePaul team that despite their last place finish has improved
since last season. Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young are both very good
sophomores, and freshman Jamee Crockett has improved his play. UConn
can't afford to stumble, but they're likely in better shape than a
slumping Seton Hall squad that dropped games to Rutgers and DePaul to
end the regular season. Providence lacks depth but with Bryce Cotton,
Vincent Council and LaDontae Henton the Friars can definitely scare the
Pirates if not win.

Big Sky - Semifinals (at Montana)
#3 Portland State vs. #2 Weber State, 7:30 p.m. (Altitude)
#4 Eastern Washington at #1 Montana, 10:00 p.m. (Altitude)

The top four teams in the Big Sky meet up in Missoula, and few
are expecting anything less than a Weber State/Montana rubber game on
Wednesday night. Tyler Geving's Portland State team has won four
straight and seven of their last eight game, and with Charles Odum and
Chehales Tapscott he's got two of the better players in the Big Sky. But
the question for PSU is whether or not they can limit Damian Lillard,
and if the two regular season meetings are any indication of what could
happen tonight their chances aren't good. Lillard's two point totals
against the Vikings this season: 38 points on the road, 40 at home.

Eastern
Washington has won three of their last four games, but in a weird
scheduling quirk all three wins came at the expense of Idaho State (two
regular season games, then their conference tournament meeting on
Saturday). And they're running to a Montana squad that swept the two
regular season meetings, and the Grizzlies are hot right now as well
with a streak of 12 straight wins. Will Cherry and Kareem Jamar have
played well on the perimeter all season long, and even with Cliff
Colimon it's going to be tough for the Eagles to win on the Grizzlies'
home floor.

Horizon League - Title Game
#3 Detroit at #1 Valparaiso, 9:00 p.m. (ESPN)

Valparaiso hosts a Detroit team that's gotten things going at
just the right time, winning four straight and nine of their last ten
heading into tonight's title game. The two regular season meetings were
close but Bryce Drew's Crusaders won both, most recently beating the
Titans at home on February 2nd. It was a tale of two halves, as Detroit
shot 61% and scored 45 points in the first half, only to see VU clamp
down and limit them to 34.5% shooting in the second half. Ray McCallum
Jr. and Eli Holman are two key figures for Detroit but it's important to
point out that five Titans finished that game in double figures.

The
key for Detroit: slow down Horizon League Player of the Year Ryan
Broekhoff, who scored 26 points in the second meeting (6-6 3PT). Kevin
Van Wijk has done well inside for the Crusaders, averaging 14.5 points
and 6.0 rebounds per game in Valpo's last two games, and if he can come
close to those numbers tonight Valparaiso will have a better shot at
returning to the Big Dance for the first time since 2004.

MEAC - Opening Round
# 8 Hampton vs. # 9 Morgan State, 11:00 a.m.
# 7 North Carolina A&T vs. #10 Howard, 1:30 p.m.
# 5 North Carolina Central vs. # 12 UMES, 4:00 p.m.
# 4 Bethune-Cookman vs. # 13 South Carolina State, 6:30 p.m.
# 6 Coppin State vs. # 11 Florida A&M, 9:00 p.m.

Given
the nature of the MEAC race beneath regular season champion Savannah
State and second-place finisher Norfolk State this could be a wild five
days in Winston-Salem. The top three seeds take Tuesday off, and
Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina Central shouldn't have much trouble
with South Carolina State and UMES, respectively.

But beginning
with Coppin State/FAMU things could get interesting, especially
considering the fact that somehow the two teams didn't meet during the
regular season. Tony Gallo leads four Eagles in double figures, and with
both teams having issues defensively this could be a wild contest that
goes down to the wire. Hampton/Morgan State shouldn't lack for
entertainment value either with the two teams splitting their regular
season meetings, but neither winner reached 70 points so don't expect
offensive fireworks.

Summit League - Title Game
#4 Western Illinois vs. #2 South Dakota State, 9:00 p.m. (ESPN2)

Many expected the top two seeds to meet for the Summit League
crown, but the Leathernecks took care of those plans with a 54-53 win
over Oral Roberts on Monday night. Defending Dominique Morrison was
tough enough and he still finished with 23 points, but just as it was on
Monday the key for WIU in beating the Jackrabbits will be to make Nate
Wolters' teammates don't go off as well.

Wolters, who led SDSU to
a 63-47 win over Southern Utah with 31 points, seven rebounds and six
assists, has an impact in all facets of the game for the Jackrabitts,
and if he's able to get his teammates going offensively there's no
telling how many points they could end up scoring (they hung 93 on
Washington earlier this season). Ceola Clark III and Obi Emegano lead
the way offensively for WIU, who will need a low-scoring (and
low-possession) game if they're to pull off the upset.

Sun Belt - Title Game
#5 North Texas vs. #7 Western Kentucky, 7:00 p.m. (ESPN2 - Summit Arena)

When
Ken McDonald was fired on January 6th, few people thought that a young
Western Kentucky squad would have enough left to make a run at a Sun
Belt title. But thanks in large part to new head coach Ray Harper and a
freshman in Derrick Gordon who is going to win a conference Player of
the Year award before his career's over, the Hilltoppers find themselves
one win away from an improbable NCAA tournament appearance. On the
other side of the floor is North Texas, a team many pegged as a team
that could win the league thanks to the addition of one-time Missouri
signee Tony Mitchell.

North Texas won the lone regular season
meeting 84-67 back on January 12th, but this is a far different WKU team
than the one that set foot in Denton on that night. Does WKU have
enough left in the tank, playing their fourth game in four days, to win
the title? It will be tough, but there's no reason to assume that can't
at this point.

Saint Mary's Makes History: Monday's Quick Hitters

VCU jumped out to a big lead in the first half, holding on to beat Drexel for the CAA title.

1. Saint Mary's rebounds from a Gonzaga rally to force overtime, beating the Zags to win the WCC crown.
Both late title games featured wild comebacks to force overtime, but
ultimately the team that could have been too crushed to rebound ended up
winning. Elias Harris scored the final five points of regulation for
Gonzaga, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to send the WCC
title game into overtime, but his efforts wouldn't be enough as Saint
Mary's won 78-74. Randy Bennett's team made history with the win, as it
marks the first time in school history that the Gaels have won the
regular season title outright and won the conference tournament in the
same season.

Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points and dished out
four assists to lead the Gaels and Rob Jones added 18 and nine boards,
but Jorden Page was just as important. Page scored 16 points on a night
that saw Gonzaga's guards, most notably Kevin Pangos (3-for-18 FG),
struggle while their big men played well. Harris finished with 22 points
and 13 rebounds, and both Robert Sacre' (17 points) and Sam Dower (14
points) reached double figures. Saint Mary's out-rebounded the Bulldogs
by four and outscored them by five at the foul line, but ultimately it
was Gonzaga's three-point shooting (5-for-22) that caught up with them.
Both teams will dance, and Saint Mary's likely improved their seeding
with the result as they can now claim two wins over the Bulldogs this
season.

2. Davidson finds away to survive Western Carolina despite some poor late-game execution.
Saint Mary's issues late in regulation had nothing on Davidson's, as the
Wildcats looked nothing like the team that ran through the SoCon during
the regular season. There were turnovers as well as silly fouls of jump
shooters, but thanks to the efforts of De'Mon Brooks, Jake Cohen and JP
Kulhman the Wildcats survived 93-91 in double overtime. Brooks and
Kuhlman scored 19 points apiece while Cohen and Nik Cochran added 17 and
16 respectively, and Clint Mann added ten points off the bench. WCU,
who entered the game having won seven straight games, had three players
score 20 points or more but it wouldn't be enough to get them into the
NCAA tournament.

Keaton Cole led the Catamounts with 21 points,
and Tawaski King (ten rebounds) and Harouna Mutombo (seven rebounds,
four assists and three steals) scored 20 apiece. Davidson shot 52.9%
from the field but got themselves in trouble with the turnovers (15
total) and 5-for-21 night from beyond the arc. But it would be wise to
not write off the Wildcats due to this performance, as Bob McKillop's
team plays under control in most instances. Just so happened that they
ran into a team that could speed up their thought process and force
things to happen, and it very nearly got Davidson beat.

3. Loyola (MD) completes a long journey, going from 1-27 to an NCAA tournament berth.
In Scott Hicks' final season in charge the Loyola Greyhounds went an
embarrassing 1-27, a clear indication that change is needed. Jimmy
Patsos was hired and from there he began to rebuild the program, and the
goal of getting to the NCAA tournament was final achieved on Monday
night. Loyola ramped things up defensively in the second half,
pressuring full-court on made basket, which negated the Stags' advantage
inside. The Greyhounds went on to win 48-44 due to both their defense
and the versatility of tournament MVP Erik Etherly, who finished with
ten points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

Ryan
Olander and Rakim Sanders both reached double figures but they combined
to shoot just 6-for-25 from the field, and point guard Desmond Wade
wasn't a whole lot better as he shot 1-for-5. Loyola limited the Stags
to just 28.8% shooting for the game and 14 second-half points. While
Patsos tends to be the center of attention from a media standpoint when
the Greyhounds are playing, it's also important to recognize that
there's a good team at Patsos' disposal as well. If Loyola can get the
right matchup with a 14 or 15-seed, they've got the ability to throw a
scare into someone.

Quick Hitters

1. The top four seeds in the Sun Belt are all gone before the final, with three-seed Denver being the last to go. Western Kentucky
knocked off the Pioneers 67-63 in the second semifinal in Hot Springs,
setting up a date with North Texas for the title. The Mean Green beat
Arkansas State in the first semifinal.

2. There was also an upset in the Summit League semis as top-seed Oral Roberts
lost to Western Illinois 54-53. Dominique Morrison led the Golden
Eagles with 23 points, but his teammates shot just 11-for-36 from the
field. Terell Parks led the Leathernecks with 14 points and eight
rebounds, and Ceola Clark III added 11 points. WIU will take on two-seed
South Dakota State in Tuesday's title game, as the Jackrabbits beat
Southern Utah 63-47.

3. Two of the four road teams in the first round of the MAC tournament found a way to win, with Northern Illinois knocking off Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan
upsetting Bowling Green. The first half between NIU and EMU featured
just 29 points (18-11 NIU) and 17 combined turnovers. As for CMU, a
Derek Jackson three with 1:40 remaining put the Chippewas up for good
and Austin McBroom scored a team-high 20 points.

4. It was a busy day on the coaching carousel as Winthrop decided not the bring back Randy Peele, and Miami (OH)
head coach Charlie Coles retired following the Redhawks' 60-53 loss at
Toledo in a MAC tournament first round game. One name that has already
been mentioned in regards to the Miami (OH) job is Arizona associate
head coach James Whitford, as he spent 11 years on Coles' staff with
eight of those being as the top assistant.

5. Two other coaching moves that didn't surprise many were Brown deciding not to renew Jesse Agel's contract, and UNCG
removed Wes Miller's interim tag. Miller's the youngest head coach in
college basketball, but his promotion sparked the Spartans run to the
North Division title in the SoCon.

Syracuse Suffers First Loss of the Season: Saturday's Recap

With the announcement that starting center Fab Melo would miss Saturday's game due to an unresolved academic issue, the chances that top-ranked Syracuse would remain undefeated took a hit. But few would have thought that the Orange would have few (if any) answers in the paint as a result of his absence, and that's exactly what happened at Purcell Pavilion. Jack Cooley scored 17 points and grabbed ten rebounds and Notre Dame led by as many as 18 points on their way to the 67-58 win, the eighth in school history over a top-ranked opponent.

The biggest problem for Syracuse was their lack of rebounding, as Notre Dame out-rebounded the Orange 38-25 on the night. Syracuse on the season has allowed opponents to rebound 38% of their misses and while Notre Dame didn't reach that number, finishing with an offensive rebound percentage of 34.6%, it was enough to punish the Melo-less Orange. C.J. Fair moved into the starting lineup and was largely ineffective for the Orange, finishing with six points and four rebounds as the Irish took advantage of Syracuse's lack of interior muscle.

"The problem was that when they did that we did not get the rebounds," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "Probably six times we had a good defensive possession and Notre Dame put a shot up at the end of the shot clock and we did not get the rebound. If you give them a long possession and then they miss and they get the rebound, it is just not a good thing."

Notre Dame established their biggest lead of the game late in the first half on an Alex Dragevich three-pointer with 1:28 remaining, and the bonus shot was one of the themes of the half. The Irish made six of their ten shots from behind the arc and Syracuse received underwhelming performances from their starters (reserves scored 15 of their 23 first half points), establishing a distance the Orange were unable to overcome. The second half was where the rebounding came into play as Notre Dame made just two of six from deep, and three other players finished with at least six rebounds to go along with Cooley's ten.

Notre Dame finished the night with just seven second-chance points but it was those extra possessions that proved costly for the visitors in what turned out to be just a 61-possession game. The focus for the Orange now is how they go about fixing the rebounding issue without Melo heading into their game at Cincinnati, but it's been an issue well before his absence. Whatever happens with Melo, if the Orange can't do a better job of taking care of the defensive glass they'll be asking for more trouble down the road.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Michael Snaer's shot at the buzzer pushes Florida State past Duke at Cameron.
It's been an excellent week for Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles, who at this stage are not only a contender to win the ACC but also a logical choice in the "best team in the ACC" discussion. Simply put, Florida State has come a long way since opening conference play with a 20-point loss at Clemson. Florida State went toe-to-toe with Duke on Saturday at Cameron, ultimately winning 76-73 on a three-pointer from Michael Snaer as time expired. But Snaer shouldn't be the only one who receives credit for the final play. Luke Loucks remained under control in that final sequence, having the presence to find the open Snear as Andre Dawkins was too hasty in his help defense. Most players would have forced up a challenged shot but Loucks' composure made the shot possible.

FSU ultimately won the game from inside of the three-point arc despite Duke making ten of their twenty-three attempts from deep, shooting 55.5% from two while Duke made 37.5% of their shots from two. Bernard James (12 points, eight rebounds) and Xavier Gibson (16 points (7-8 FT), five rebounds and three blocks) outplayed the Plumlee brothers inside (combined 13 points and 14 rebounds) for a decent portion of the contest, and Seth Curry socred 12 points but shot 4-for-16 from the field for the Blue Devils. Florida State's offensive efficiency, which has been much improved over the last three games, made up for allowing Duke to grab 14 offensive rebounds and should be seen as a sign that they're figuring things out. ACC title contender? Definitely.

2. Missouri more than holds their own on the glass and wins at Baylor as a result.
Despite the final margin (89-88) it would be safe to say that Frank Haith's Tigers were more impressive than the final margin would indicate. The undersized Tigers out-rebounded Baylor 32-26 and finished the game with an offensive rebounding percentage of 48.3%, further highlighting Baylor's problems on the boards. Toughness could be cited as a reason why, but it shouldn't be at the expense of attention to detail. With the number of tall athletes that Scott Drew's team has the players on the floor seem to be more of the "outjump opponents for the ball" mindset when it comes to rebounding instead of boxing out, and Missouri made them pay on many occasions on Saturday afternoon.

Six of Ricardo Ratliffe's eight rebounds were of the offensive variety, and the national leader in field goal percentage finished the game with 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting. Baylor improved on the glass some in the second half as they allowed just four second-chance points and out-rebounded the Tigers 15-11 but the damage was done. Quincy Miller scored a game-high 29 points and Pierre Jackson added 20 to go along with 15 assists, but the last two games have shown that the Bears have a lot of work to do on the glass if they're to not only contend for the Big 12 crown but also have a shot at getting to the Final Four. As for the Tigers, Saturday's win should be taken as a sign that it's time to stop focusing on what they don't have but rather on what they do.

3. Arkansas and Tennessee pick up some solid non-conference wins for the SEC.
Not a big fan of the "best conference" but with the majority of the discussion centering on the Big Ten and Big 12 to this point in the season, the SEC may have been ignored some. That was before Saturday, as home wins for both Arkansas and Tennessee show that the league is deeper than many believe. The Razorbacks led by as many as 20 points at Bud Walton Arena before holding on to beat #20 Michigan 66-64. B.J. Young and Hunter Mickelson combined to score 26 points off the bench for the Hogs, who benefitted from the Wolverines shooting just 8-for-28 from beyond the arc. Arkansas is now 14-5 (2-2 SEC) on the season, and it may be time to wonder if Mike Anderson's young team has enough to reach the NCAA Tournament. This win will help their resume.

As for Tennessee, the Volunteers are beginning to play with the same toughness that their head coach displayed as a player at Purdue. Cuonzo Martin's team was the tougher of the two on the floor at Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday afternoon and freshman forward Jarnell Stokes outplayed both Alex Oriakhi and Andre Drummond in the 60-57 win over #13 Connecticut. Stokes, playing in just his third collegiate game, finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds in his first start and Cameron Tatum added 15 points. UConn was without the services of Ryan Boatright but that's no excuse for zero bench points or the three starters outside of Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb (combined 41 points) scoring just 16. When shots aren't falling for either team toughness more times than not reigns supreme, and that's why Tennessee ended up with the win.

4. UNLV's depth the difference in their impressive win over New Mexico.
Dave Rice pledged to put the running back in the Runnin' Rebels program when he was hired in the offseason, and while that's happened what makes UNLV even tougher for opponents to defend is their depth. In their 80-63 win over preseason Mountain West favorite New Mexico, UNLV outscored the Lobos 26-0 in fast break points and 28-9 in bench points in what was an outstanding performance in front of the frenzied crowd at Thomas and Mack Center. Carlos Lopez (14 points) and Justin Hawkins (ten points) scored 24 of those bench points and three starter finished in double figures as well for UNLV, who remain a game behind first-place San Diego State with the win.

A couple of notable stat lines for New Mexico underline the difference on Saturday night. Point guard Hugh Greenwood, who has been dealing with a sprained ankle, finished without a point and key reserve Phillip McDonald shot 2-for-7 from the field (five points) one game after scoring 20 in their loss to SDSU. New Mexico also didn't do themselves any favors with 21 turnovers, which led to 32 UNLV points. So after the first "rotation" of the three contenders in the Mountain West it's safe to say that the pecking order is San Diego State, UNLV and then a decent gap between the Runnin' Rebels and New Mexico. But if UNLV can play the way they did on Saturday night, it wouldn't be a surprise if they finished the season on top.

5. LIU Brooklyn wins at Wagner, further establishing themselves as the team to beat in the NEC.
In what may have been the most anticipated game of the season in the Northeast Conference to date it was three-point accuracy that lifted Jim Ferry's Blackbirds past Wagner on Staten Island. LIU Brooklyn, who many believe to have the best frontcourt in the NEC, made up for allowing 17 offensive rebounds by making six of ten shots from beyond the arc with Jason Brickman making all three of his attempts and scoring 17 points. Julian Boyd led the way for LIU Brooklyn with 19 points and 15 rebounds on the night and Jamal Olasewere added 18 for the visitors, who are now two games ahead of the competition with an 8-0 league record.

Latif Rivers led four Seahawks in double figures with 17 points but as a team Wagner made just four of nineteen shots from beyond the arc. In a 69-possession game that proved to be the difference in spite of 17 second-chance points. The win also earned LIU Brooklyn a sweep of the season series (78-73 win on December 1st being the first), which could prove vital in the case of a tiebreaker. LIU Brooklyn is a middle of the pack rebounding team when looking at percentages so that will need to improve if they're to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but if they can continue to shoot as they have (2nd in the NEC in three-point percentage) it's going to be tough to dethrone the NEC's best offense.

Quick Hitters

1. Mississippi State picked up a good road victory, beating Vanderbilt 78-77 in overtime in Nashville. Arnett Moultrie scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Dee Bost scored 24 for the Bulldogs, who moved to within a game of the second-place Commodores with the win.

2. The presence of "College Gameday" provided a spark for Pittsburgh and their fans but it didn't bring a win as Louisville won 73-62 to drop the Panthers to 0-7 in the Big East. Tray Woodall wasn't as effective as Pitt would have hoped but the bigger issue was their defense. Louisville shot 55.3% from the field and received a boost in the form of Kyle Kuric's return.

3. As a result of their 87-72 win over rival Xavier, Dayton moved to 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. Kevin Dillard (16 points, eight assists) and Matt Kavanaugh (20 points) led the way for the Flyers, who are now in sole possession of first place in the A-10.

4. Torrey Craig's putback just before time expired gave USC Upstate a 79-78 win over Belmont and made the Atlantic Sun race a lot more interesting than many outsiders expected it to be. Craig finished with 22 points and six rebounds for the Spartans, who are now one of three teams that sit a game behind the Bruins and Mercer atop the A-Sun.

5. Cincinnati had a chance to pull into a tie for first place in the loss column in the Big East ahead of their game against Syracuse on Monday night, but it wasn't meant to be as West Virginia won 77-74 in Morgantown. Kevin Jones posted another double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds and Gary Browne's three late in regulation sent the game into overtime.

6. E.J. Singler went 16-for-17 from the foul line and scored a career-high 26 points (and seven rebounds) as Oregon came back from a 13-point halftime deficit to beat UCLA 75-68 in Eugene to move to 6-2 in the Pac-12. The Ducks are one of four teams tied in the loss column atop the league standings, with Cal being the other team sitting at 6-2 (Colorado and Washington are 5-2).

7. Tony Mitchell's putback as time expired in overtime gave North Texas a 75-74 win over Denver, moving the Mean Green into a tie for first place in the West Division of the Sun Belt with both the Pioneers and UALR. Mitchell, a transfer from Missouri, scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Roger Williams added 18 and ten boards.

8. The Big West showdown between Long Beach State and UCSB proved to be anything but as Dan Monson's 49ers took over at the Thunderdome, leaving with a 71-48 victory. The Beach, who is now 7-0 in league play, had four starters in double figures with Larry Anderson (19 points) and T.J. Robinson (11 points, 11 rebounds) being two of the leaders.

Five Notable Performances

1. F Leonard Washington (Wyoming)
32 points and 14 rebounds in the Cowboys' 70-51 win over Colorado State.

2. F Tony Mitchell (North Texas)
30 points and 17 rebounds in the Mean Green's 75-74 overtime win over Denver.

3. G Darren White (Campbell)
22 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists in the Camels' 80-73 win over VMI.

4. G Velton Jones (Robert Morris)
35 points, six assists and three steals in the Colonials' 81-73 win at Monmouth.

5. G Langston Galloway (Saint Joseph's)
32 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the Hawks' 84-80 loss to Pennsylvania.

Thursday Recap: Can Pittsburgh or Villanova Turn Things Around?

To understand the funk that Pittsburgh and Villanova are currently mired in, it may take this fact about the two teams they lost to on Thursday night. This is the first time as members of the Big East (since 2005-06 for both) that DePaul and USF have won conference games on the same night. Yes, allowing that to sink in underlines the gravity of the situation for both the Panthers and Wildcats, as both teams are in need of some answers at this point in time.

Pittsburgh, once again playing without point guard Tray Woodall, had their biggest issues show up on the defensive end in their 84-81 loss to the Blue Demons. DePaul scored 53 points and shot 59.4% from the floor in the second half to make their comeback, and point guard Brandon Young was near unstoppable with 26 points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds with just one turnover. Pittsburgh held a 50-32 edge on the boards, but when a team makes 10 of 22 from beyond the arc as DePaul did, winning on the road becomes that much tougher.

Even with all five starters scoring in double figures (Talib Zanna led the way with 16), the Panthers were in trouble for much of the night due to the issues defensively to go along with some bad decisions late. Ashton Gibbs' decision to give the foul on Young as the sophomore was attempting what would be the game-winning layup with 17.2 seconds remaining may be the most glaring mistake, but there were issues in terms of shot selection and some costly turnovers as well.

As for Villanova the situation may be even worse, as Jay Wright's team is extremely young in key areas. And youth doesn't always have to be measured by years; lack of familiarity with a new role can be just as damning for a team and that could be the case for Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek.

Cheek now has to be a feature option for the Wildcats offensively, and while he had a key role last season Wayns is being entrusted with the task of running the show without a Corey Fisher alongside him. Other than these two and Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova is relying a lot on their youngsters, and the 74-57 loss to USF further exposed the fact that they're not ready for the Big East yet.

While Villanova was expected to be a bubble team this season, the expectations were much higher for Pittsburgh. If anything the impact of the loss of players such as Fisher and Corey Stokes (Villanova), and Brad Wanamaker, Gary McGhee and Gilbert Brown (Pittsburgh) was underestimated by those outside of the respective programs.

While many are quick to point out the fact that leagues can eat their young in conference play, it can also expose older players as well. There's still time for both teams to turn things around, but Pittsburgh and Villanova both understand that they need to do so quickly.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Indiana hangs on to beat Michigan and remain undefeated at home.
The battle between the Hoosiers and Wolverines lived up to the pregame expectations, but at the end of the contest Indiana's starting frontcourt and Victor Oladipo's defense made the difference in the 73-71 win. Christian Watford was a matchup nightmare for Michigan, scoring 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, and Cody Zeller added 18, four rebounds and two blocks. By comparison, the Michigan starting frontcourt of Jordan Morgan (12 points, nine rebounds) and Evan Smotrycz (eight points) was solid but didn't have a similar impact.

As a team the Hoosiers shot 55.1% from the field and finished with an effective field goal percentage of 62.2%, well above what Michigan allowed entering the game (47.1%). Another area in which Indiana held their own was three-point shooting. Michigan did make ten, with Stu Douglass making three, but they needed twenty-four attempts to do so while Indiana made seven of their eleven attempts.

But back to Oladipo, who was given the responsibility of defending Tim Hardaway Jr. for much of the night. Hardaway Jr. led Michigan with 19 points, but he needed 19 shot attempts to do so (0-for-7 3PT). Oladipo didn't shoot well himself (2-for-10, five points) but that didn't stop him from taking care of business on the other end. There's also the matter of what Indiana's backcourt was able to do with Michigan freshman Trey Burke, who scored ten points on 4-for-15 shooting. Indiana's offense will get the headlines in many circles, but don't ignore their effort defensively.

2. Good luck making any sense of the Pac-12 this season.
Two happenings on Thursday sum up the conference: Utah won, and so did Arizona State with just six scholarship players after having to suspend three. Yeah, it's going to be a wacky year in the Pac-12, and that's not a good thing for a league that put together a 1-24 record against RPI Top 50 teams in non-conference play. My question on Twitter was a simple one, but one without a clear answer at this point in time. With so many meager non-conference resumes it may take at least 12 league wins to be a seriously discussed at-large candidate, but who can accomplish that in this conference?

The quick responses would likely yield Arizona, California and maybe Washington, but all three went on the road and lost on Thursday. Stanford? They fell at Oregon, who owns one of the two wins for road teams in the first week-plus of conference play (at Washington State last week). Oregon State, who went 0-2 against the Washington schools last week, could also be an option given their talent. But the fact that there are so many question marks is a bad thing for the Pac-12 in terms of their prospects come Selection Sunday.

Just one team remains undefeated in conference play: Colorado, who whipped the Huskies 87-69 in Boulder. But given the way things have played out thus far, the Buffaloes will likely fall against Washington State. One-bid league? Never thought it would be a serious possibility, but that could very well be the reality if a couple of teams don't rise above the rest of the conference.

3. Penn State hands Purdue a 20-point loss for their first Big Ten win of the season.
Patrick Chambers' Nittany Lions have taken their lumps, which was expected to happen given the major personnel losses from last season's NCAA Tournament team. But they gave a serious lump to Purdue on Thursday night, leading from start to finish in a 65-45 romp in Happy Valley. As a team the Boilermakers shot just 31.9% for the game, and outside of Robbie Hummel (14 points, five rebounds) Purdue starters shot 5-for-22 on the night. Tim Frazier played well for Penn State, finishing with 15 points, nine assists and five rebounds, but he wasn't the star as Billy Oliver knocked down seven of eleven three-pointers to score a game-high 21 points.

The 6'8" forward shoots 37% from beyond the arc, but this was quite the explosion for a player who had made three or more from deep in just three games this season. Purdue entered the contest with every opportunity to take care of business as a team hoping to contend for a conference title would, and they came out flat. Sometimes it takes getting drilled to remember that you can't get away with such starts.

Quick Hitters

1. No sequence summed up the night better than Louisiana-Lafayette playing the final seconds of overtime against Western Kentucky with six players on the floor. Yes, six. After nearly turning the ball over Elfrid Payton scored a layup that gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 72-70 win. According to the rules there was no way for the officials, who missed the error coming out of the timeout, to review the play and assess a technical foul (which should have been the call to begin with). There's also no way for the Sun Belt to go back and replay the final seconds, meaning that the Hilltoppers are out of luck.

2. Also in the Sun Belt, keep an eye on North Texas especially with Tony Mitchell now in the fold. Mitchell led the Mean Green to a 78-73 overtime win at South Alabama with 34 points and 16 rebounds, and if this is a harbinger of things to come this is a team that can contend to win the conference.

3. Manhattan was just seconds away from their third MAAC win, but a Dylon Cormier three from the corner gave Loyola (MD) the 61-60 win in Baltimore. Cormier was one of three Greyhounds to score 11 points while Erik Etherly added eight points, seven assists and six rebounds. George Beamon led the Jaspers with 18 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

4. Glen Braica's St. Francis (NY) Terriers moved to 2-1 in NEC play, beating Quinnipiac 73-72 in Brooklyn. The Terriers, who were led by Stefan Perunicic (21 points), likely won't be a contender for the league title but games like this make the difference between hosting and going on the road in the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament. Good win for the Terriers.

5. Congratulations are in order for the Hartford Hawks, who picked up their first win of the season. Andres Torres scored 27 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Hawks beat New Hampshire 56-49 in West Hartford.

6. Wofford may not be one of the teams discussed as a contender in the SoCon, but the defending champs aren't in the business of conceding anything. Karl Cochran led four starters in double figures with 21 points as the Terriers beat College of Charleston 75-58 to move to 2-1 in league play. The Cougars made just 34.4% of their two-point shots on the night as Wofford did a good job of limiting their quality looks.

7. In the Big West, UCSB sent a message to Cal-State Fullerton in the form of a 77-64 win in their first home game since November 30th. Orlando Johnson scored 23 points and James Nunnally 18 as the Gauchos remained undefeated in league play while handing the Titans their first Big West loss. Fullerton will still be a factor in the race, but until further notice it's safe to say that UCSB and Long Beach State are the best bets to win the league.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Tony Mitchell (North Texas)
34 points and 16 rebounds in the Mean Green's 78-73 overtime win at South Alabama.

2. F Jamal Olasewere (Long Island)
29 points and 12 rebounds in the Blackbirds' 87-81 win at Sacred Heart.

3. F Rob Jones (Saint Mary's)
31 points, 12 rebounds and three steals in the Gaels' 78-72 win at San Diego.

Jon Teitel's "Forgotten Legends" Series: North Texas' Kenneth Lyons

In the latest installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Kenneth Lyons, who to this day remains the greatest player in the history of North Texas basketball. Lyons remains the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, and he was a two-time All American in college.
Jon Teitel: Why did you decide to go to North Texas?

Kenneth Lyons: I was recruited by 8 schools, including Oklahoma, Texas, etc. My high school coach's brother was an assistant coach at North Texas so I was funneled that way. I wanted to go to Oklahoma or Wichita State, but I also wanted to play as a freshman, which is why I went to North Texas. I led the team in scoring and rebounding during each of my four years, which you will never find today. I did not have as much talent, but I just outworked everyone. I should have been a small forward at 6'7", but I sacrificed a lot by playing center because they needed someone down low.

JT: In 1983 you scored a school-record 47 points in a win against Louisiana Tech in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament. What are your memories of that game, and was it just one of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were "in the zone"?

KL: I was #8 in the nation in scoring as a senior, but Karl Malone was named conference POY. We were an independent until my senior year, which is when we joined the Southland Conference. I was pissed off that they selected Karl as POY, but I did not understand any of the politics behind it. I went into the game with a vengeance, and set a school record that still stands today. All 47 of my points were right in Karl's eye! He fouled out with only six points, and I would have scored even more if they had not taken me out with several minutes left in the game. I played against several guys that season who were bigger than me (Keith Lee, Mark West, etc.), but I had the best hook shot in the State of Texas. After sending Karl home in the first round, we beat McNeese St. in the semifinals and sent Joe Dumars home.

JT: You were a two-time All American. How were you able to dominate throughout your college career?

KL: It only confirmed that hard work pays off. It is as simple as that, which is what I live by today. I was the strongest undersized center you have ever seen. I worked out every single day and was dedicated to it: bench press, squats, you name it. Opponents had to double-team and triple-team me starting from my freshman year.

JT: In the summer of 1983 you were drafted in the second round by Philadelphia (one spot ahead of Craig Ehlo). Were you thrilled to realize your dream of getting drafted, or disappointed that you did not make the team, or
something in between?

KL: I was named MVP of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament after setting a scoring record against guys like Ehlo and Mark West. I thought I was going to get picked in the first round because my stock went up. I was invited to the pre-draft camp in Chicago, but did not go to Hawaii because my agent said I had already moved up to the first round. I ended up dropping into the second round, and I think about that all of the time. Philly had been scouting me for two years, but I never knew about it until Jack McMahon (director of player personnel) told me about it after I was drafted.

JT: Do you think that anyone will ever break your scoring and rebounding records?

KL: I do not think that anyone will ever break my records. If a player is good enough now as I was back then, there is no way they would go to North Texas. I know records are made to be broken, but I do not see it happening in my lifetime.

JT: When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most?

KL: I want to be remembered as someone who gave 110% and left it all on the court. I played the game with passion because I loved it, and I still love it. If you do not have passion for what you are doing, you are just wasting your time. North Texas has not retired my jersey yet despite all of my accomplishments, but rumor has it that they might do it after I graduate (Ed. note- Lyons graduated earlier this month). I have one class left to complete my degree in sociology, and then I plan on marching. The people who saw me play were amazed by the way I played the game. I am in an exclusive club of guys with 2,000 PTS/1,000 REB (Danny Manning, Elvin Hayes, etc.), so that is what I am proudest of.

Lyons is also on Jon's list of best fantasy players in Sun Belt history.

Arkansas State: John Dickson (1967) 1891 PTS (#2), 1139 REB (#2), 62.5 FG% (#2), 2-time All-American, conference POY
Arkansas Little Rock: Derek Fisher (1996) 1393 PTS (#3), 472 AST (#2), 184 STL (#2), All-American, conference POY
Denver: Harry Hollines (1968) 1879 PTS (#1), 2-time All-American
Florida Atlantic: Earnest Crumbley (2004) 1559 PTS (#1), 505 AST (#1), 181 STL (#1), 286 3PM (#1), 79.2 FT% (#3)
Florida International: Dwight Stewart (1993) 2101 PTS (#1), 806 REB (#2), 264 AST (#2), 128 BLK (#1), 172 STL (#3)
Lafayette: Dwight "Bo" Lamar (1973) 3493 PTS (#1), 520 AST (#4), 3-time All-American, conference POY
UL Monroe: Calvin Natt (1979) 2581 PTS (#1), 1285 REB (#1), 57.4 FG% (#4), 3-time All-American, conference POY
Middle Tennessee State: Kerry Hammonds (1989) 1616 PTS (#3), 955 REB (#2)
North Texas: Kenneth Lyons (1983) 2291 PTS (#1), 1095 REB (#1), 2-time All-American
South Alabama: Jeff Hodge (1989) 2221 PTS (#1), 461 AST (#2), 223 STL (#2), All-American, conference POY
Troy: Anthony Reed (1990) 1875 PTS (#1), 913 REB (#3), 149 STL (#5), 57.9 FG% (#2), All-American
Western Kentucky: Jim McDaniels (1971) 2238 PTS (#1), 1118 REB (#4), 3-time All-American, 2-time conference POY

24-9, 13-5

2009-10 postseason:
NCAA

Coach:
Johnny Jones (150-121 at North Texas, 165-137 overall)

With five starters returning, North Texas was supposed to win their first ever
Sun Belt West divisional title. And that is exactly what they did. They also
reached the NCAA Tournament and were easily the most consistent team in the
conference. With four starters returning, the Mean Green could do it again, but
replacing Eric Tramiel will not be easy.

Key Losses:

G Collin Mangrum, G Richard Thomas, F Eric Tramiel

Key Newcomers:

The Mean Green
hope Alonzo Edwards can help fill the void. The versatile 6-8 forward was a top
recruit coming out of high school and signed with Nebraska. After redshirting in
Lincoln, Edwards failed to find much playing time as a freshman. He then went
off to junior college before landing in Denton. Edwards is very much like
Tramiel in the fact that he can shoot, rebound and play some defense, but he has
pretty much underachieved throughout his career. North Texas will need him to at
least fill part of the void left behind by Tramiel. The other newcomer is 6-5
freshman Ronald McGhee. McGhee is a do-it-all wing and he could find a place in
the regular rotation as a freshman.

Backcourt:

However, there is already a logjam in the starting lineup on the perimeter. Josh
White and Tristan Thompson are both back after averaging 14.5 points per game a
year ago. White also led the squad with 3.5 assists. White and Thompson are the
main two shooting threats on the team and both shot around 39 percent from
beyond the arc. Shannon Shorter is not as prolific of a scorer as White or
Thompson, but he is a decent rebounder and the team’s best perimeter defender.
The depth behind those three is gone, but Dominique Johnson is back after
missing all but four games last season. Two years ago Johnson averaged 11.0
points and a team high 3.8 assists and 1.1 steals. Whether or not he makes it
back into the starting lineup probably depends on whether or not Coach Johnny
Jones wants to play small or if somebody else can man the power forward
position. Thompson, at 6-5, would be the guard who would have to slide up to the
four spot, but this is a team that lacked great individual defense and moving
him out there would not make things any better.

Frontcourt:

Ideally, Johnson or Shorter would come in off the bench and either Edwards or
sophomore Jacob Holmen will fill in at the four spot. Holmen did earn eight
starts during his freshman campaign, but he only averaged 13.5 minutes per
contest. While the 6-8, 220 pound Whitehouse, Texas native did prove to be a
capable scorer and rebounder, it remains to be seen if he can do it
consistently. Cameron Spencer could fill in a few minutes here and there like he
did last season too, but this team really needs Edwards and Holmen to be ready
play some major minutes.

Who to Watch:

No matter what
happens with the power forward position, UNT knows they still have a great
frontcourt as long as George Odufuwa is on the floor. The 6-8, 240 pound senior
is a beast on the glass and ended the season averaging 11.5 points and 10.7
rebounds. Even if the power forward situation remains muddled, Odufuwa will grab
any ball coming his way and the Mean Green will still be a solid rebounding
team. Odufuwa’s ability to score in the paint has really opened up the offense
and given space to the talent on the perimeter. A little work at the free-throw
line and Odufuwa could be looking at 15 points and 12 boards per game during his
senior campaign.

Final Projection:

There may be a few more questions heading into this season than last, but when
Johnson went down all those questions came up again and North Texas had answers.
They should have answers again this season with the newcomers and the
development of some of the younger players. Once again the issue will be finding
players who can contribute off of the bench and that looks like it could remain
a problem all year long.

Why North Texas will win:

UNT is coming into the tourney on a
roll, having won 11 games in a row. The Sun Belt is often an underrated league,
just look to recent Western Kentucky teams for proof. UNT played 2 other top Big
12 teams earlier on the road and lost by 14 at OSU and 10 at Texas A&M. Now UNT
is playing their best and the game is on a neutral court.

Mean Green
to Watch:

George Odufuwa, F - 12 ppg, 11 rpg, 2
apg

K-State doesn't have dominant bigs so
Odufuwa can hold his own, and more importantly he HAS to hold his own and
control the defensive glass to give UNT a chance. Some O-boards wouldn't hurt
either.

Why Kansas St will win:

You don't become a Top 10 team for
nothing. The Wildcats have beaten 7 tourney teams on the way to a 25-7 season.
Jacob Pullen & Denis Clemente form one of the country's best backcourts, but
frontcourt contributions from Jamar Samuels and Curtis Kelly into a great team.

Wildcat
to Watch:

Denis Clemente - 16 ppg, 2 rpg, 4 apg

Clemente is not afraid to fire from
deep, but occasionally the shots simply don't fall. In their dud loss to Iowa
St, Clemente shot 2-12 from three and 5-18 overall.

How it will go down:

North Texas has the pedigree and
track record to give K-State trouble. While K-State is the more talented team
and will ultimately win, the score may be much closer then K-State fans expect.
UNT hasn't lost a game by 15+ all season, which will continue to be true.

Betting Pick: North Texas

Real Pick: Kansas St

Big Wins: 1/14 at Troy (75-72), 1/28 at Western

Bad Losses: 11/28 at Boise State (73-79), 12/20

Last NCAA Appearance: 2007, First Round loss to
Memphis

Coach: Johnny Jones (0-1 in 1 NCAA appearance)

Why They Can Surprise:

North Texas has four great scorers who all offer the team
something different. Josh White is the leader of the team and is a consistent
outside shooter who will also use his speed and athleticism to attack the
basket. Fellow guard Tristan Thompson is often the beneficiary of one of White’s
passes. Thompson is a little less aggressive, but he will certainly do plenty of
damage around the basket. Thompson is the better outside shooter of the duo and
connects on 40.1 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.

The outside shooting would not nearly be as good without
the dangerous scoring duo of Eric Tramiel and George Odufuwa in the frontcourt.
Tramiel, a 6-7 senior who played his first season with the Mean Green last
season, is a great power forward. He is a superb scorer around the basket and
has the athleticism to finish above the rim and slash his way to the basket.
Tramiel is even a pretty good outside shooter and he will stretch out the
defense by consistently hitting the mid-range jumper. Odufuwa is the big man
under the basket. At 6-8 and 240 pounds, the junior can clear space for himself
in the paint. He averages 11.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and is a tough defender to
beat.

Why They Can Disappoint:

White, Thompson, Tramiel and Odufuwa were all starters last
year. The fifth starter a year ago was Dominique Johnson, but he went out for
the season with an injury after playing just four games. For the most part
Richard Thomas took over the starting job after Johnson’s injury. But then
Thomas left the team for personal reasons. That leaves very few options for
Coach Johnny Jones as far as players coming in off the bench. Jacob Holmen has
had some decent outings, but the 6-8 forward is an inconsistent freshman who has
seen his playing time dwindle late in the year. Collin Mangrum has had to play
more minutes. The junior has been around the program for a while, but he has
never had to make much of an impact until this season and it is that lack of
experience off the bench that will be very damaging to UNT.

Who To Watch:

Shannon Shorter was the guy who stepped into the starting
role after all of the injuries and defections and he has done a superb job. He
is not a great scorer like the big four, but he is the glue guy that holds this
team together. Shorter is not a shooter, but he will use his 6-4 frame to attack
the basket and help the Mean Green out on the glass. His ability to score, pass,
rebound and play great perimeter defense has made this the best starting five in
the Sun Belt Conference. But those five will need help sooner or later.
