F Jared
Sullinger, 6-9 So. (17.6 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 53.9% FG); G William Buford, 6-6 Sr.
(14.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 35.4% 3s); F Deshaun Thomas, 6-7 So. (15.4 ppg, 5 rpg, 53.1%
FG). Sullinger was nearly unstoppable in the Big Ten Tournament, going 28-for-50
from the field for 72 points in three games. Sullinger, who has at least 14
points and nine boards in his last five games, also had 27 boards, six steals
and three assists during the run.

6-7 Jr. (13.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 53.1% FG); G Dylan Cormier, 6-2 So. (13.4 ppg, 3.3
rpg, 1.6 spg); G R.J. Williams, 5-8 Fr. (4 ppg, 2.5 apg, 1.2 spg). Olson, who
was named to the All-MAAC Tournament team, has a diverse offensive game, hitting
46.7 percent from the field, 77.8 from the foul line and 44.2 from the 3-point
line.

Why Each Team is Dangerous

Ohio State:
There isn’t
a team in the country with two better finishers around the rim than Sullinger
and Thomas. Ohio State shot 48.3 from the field, which is 16th-best
in the country, from the floor. Despite lacking a true center, the Buckeyes
out-rebounded their opponents by 7.2 boards per game this season. They also
average 7.2 steals per game and turn the ball over just 11.6 times per contest.

Loyola:
The Greyhounds are
all about defense and rebounding. They are 14th in the country with a
38.8 percent offensive rebounding percentage and 26th with an 11.9
steal percentage. Their passive pressure defensive is effective, as is its
half-court defense. Loyola averages 12 steals per game and holds opponents to
63.8 points per game, 42.8 percent from the floor and 34 percent from the
3-point line. The Greyhounds have three good scorers in Etherly, Cormier and
Olson. Loyola is an very good free throw shooting team at 71.8 percent.

Why Each Team is Vulnerable

Ohio State:
Unlike
Buckeye teams of the past, there aren’t a lot of perimeter options for Ohio
State. Buford can be great at times – and Thomas is effective from the outside –
but the Buckeyes aren’t going to beat teams with the 3-point shot. They went
just 165-for-506 from beyond the 3-point arc this season. Buford and Thomas have
both struggled defensively at times against better offensive players. OSU also
struggles from the foul line (69.8 percent). It won’t matter in this game, but
it could down the line.

Loyola:
The Greyhounds
really struggled offensively (67.6 points, 42.8% FG, 34% 3s). Despite a slow
pace, they still turn the ball over 13.5 times per game to just 12 assists. The
‘hounds really have no floor leader with their leader in assists, Williams, at
just 2.5 per game.

The Bottom Line:
The line is just about right. With all of the variables, my advice is stay away
from this one.

The Pick:
Ohio State 77, Loyola (Md.) 57

Greg Against the
Spread This Season:

NCAA Tournament Interviews: Loyola (MD) Justin Drummond

As part of his NCAA Tournament interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel caught up with Loyola (MD) guard Justin Drummond, a key cog in the Greyhound attack as they make their first tournament appearance since 1994. Drummond, who scored eight points in Loyola's 48-44 win over Fairfield in the MAAC tournament final, was named MAAC 6th Man of the Year by the conference last week.

Jon Teitel: During your senior year at Riverdale Baptist High School you played center despite weighing less than 200 pounds. How on earth were you able to survive down in the post?

Justin Drummond: I was the tallest person on my team so I pretty much played every position from one through five. It helped me become a good rebounder and develop some post moves.

JT: Last year you were planning to redshirt, but after missing the first eight games you got in the action and ended up making the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Why was there a change of plans, and how were you able to come in and be so successful so quickly?

JD: We were not doing too well to start the season, and then I got activated in the ninth game and everything quickly came together. I just tried to make an impact.

JT: You were recently named MAAC 6th Man of the Year. What is the key to coming off the bench, and would you feel better if you were starting?

JD: I just like to come in when we do not have any momentum and try to give my guys a boost. I have no problem coming off the bench.

JT: After arriving at Loyola eight years ago to fix a program that had just finished 1-27, head coach Jimmy Patsos was named 2012 MAAC Coach of the Year. What makes him such a great coach, and what is the most important thing you ever learned from him?

JD: He really cares about his players. He helps us with our overall game and shows us what it takes to get to the next level. I am known as a scorer, and he has given me plenty of tips.

JT: In December you scored a career-high 26 points in a loss at St. Bonaventure. Was it just one of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were "in the zone"?

JD: I told Coach to circle that game because I really wanted to play against them. I just wanted to have fun and show them that I could play.

JT: In the next game you made your second career start and scored ten points in a loss at Kentucky back in December. How good are they, and is Anthony Davis (who had 15 points and 11 rebounds) the greatest shot-blocker you have ever seen?

JD: Kentucky is a great team and has a huge fan base. It was a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience to go to Rupp Arena. Davis is the best shot-blocker in college basketball. There are no easy layups with him in the game.

JT: You scored eight points in a 48-44 win over Fairfield in the lowest-scoring title game in MAAC history. How were you able to hang on for the win, and what was the reaction like when you got back to campus?

JD: We just tried to stick together. It was a total team effort as we pulled away at the end. I have never seen anything like the standing ovation and TV cameras that were waiting for us when we got back to campus.

JT: You won seven straight games after losing your season opener, won 10 of 11 after losing your conference opener, lost three of four in mid-February before winning four straight to make the tournament. Do you feel like your team was playing its best basketball of the season earlier this year or right now?

JD: I think we were playing our best during the middle of the season, but we are still playing well right now. We have balanced scoring and good team defense, and I hope we can make some noise in the tourney.

JT: Your top four scorers are either sophomores or juniors. Do you think your team is built to win now, or do you think you can bring back the nucleus next year and make a serious run?

JD: I think next year we can repeat with the four of us coming back and keep the train moving with Coach behind us.

JT: What seed do you think you deserve, and what kind of team would you matchup against the best?

JD: I think we deserve a 12-13 seed. A lot of people have us going up against Michigan State, but I would like to play a team like Missouri who we can matchup with size-wise. After that it is just a battle of who wants it the most.

Saint Mary's Makes History: Monday's Quick Hitters

VCU jumped out to a big lead in the first half, holding on to beat Drexel for the CAA title.

1. Saint Mary's rebounds from a Gonzaga rally to force overtime, beating the Zags to win the WCC crown.
Both late title games featured wild comebacks to force overtime, but
ultimately the team that could have been too crushed to rebound ended up
winning. Elias Harris scored the final five points of regulation for
Gonzaga, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to send the WCC
title game into overtime, but his efforts wouldn't be enough as Saint
Mary's won 78-74. Randy Bennett's team made history with the win, as it
marks the first time in school history that the Gaels have won the
regular season title outright and won the conference tournament in the
same season.

Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points and dished out
four assists to lead the Gaels and Rob Jones added 18 and nine boards,
but Jorden Page was just as important. Page scored 16 points on a night
that saw Gonzaga's guards, most notably Kevin Pangos (3-for-18 FG),
struggle while their big men played well. Harris finished with 22 points
and 13 rebounds, and both Robert Sacre' (17 points) and Sam Dower (14
points) reached double figures. Saint Mary's out-rebounded the Bulldogs
by four and outscored them by five at the foul line, but ultimately it
was Gonzaga's three-point shooting (5-for-22) that caught up with them.
Both teams will dance, and Saint Mary's likely improved their seeding
with the result as they can now claim two wins over the Bulldogs this
season.

2. Davidson finds away to survive Western Carolina despite some poor late-game execution.
Saint Mary's issues late in regulation had nothing on Davidson's, as the
Wildcats looked nothing like the team that ran through the SoCon during
the regular season. There were turnovers as well as silly fouls of jump
shooters, but thanks to the efforts of De'Mon Brooks, Jake Cohen and JP
Kulhman the Wildcats survived 93-91 in double overtime. Brooks and
Kuhlman scored 19 points apiece while Cohen and Nik Cochran added 17 and
16 respectively, and Clint Mann added ten points off the bench. WCU,
who entered the game having won seven straight games, had three players
score 20 points or more but it wouldn't be enough to get them into the
NCAA tournament.

Keaton Cole led the Catamounts with 21 points,
and Tawaski King (ten rebounds) and Harouna Mutombo (seven rebounds,
four assists and three steals) scored 20 apiece. Davidson shot 52.9%
from the field but got themselves in trouble with the turnovers (15
total) and 5-for-21 night from beyond the arc. But it would be wise to
not write off the Wildcats due to this performance, as Bob McKillop's
team plays under control in most instances. Just so happened that they
ran into a team that could speed up their thought process and force
things to happen, and it very nearly got Davidson beat.

3. Loyola (MD) completes a long journey, going from 1-27 to an NCAA tournament berth.
In Scott Hicks' final season in charge the Loyola Greyhounds went an
embarrassing 1-27, a clear indication that change is needed. Jimmy
Patsos was hired and from there he began to rebuild the program, and the
goal of getting to the NCAA tournament was final achieved on Monday
night. Loyola ramped things up defensively in the second half,
pressuring full-court on made basket, which negated the Stags' advantage
inside. The Greyhounds went on to win 48-44 due to both their defense
and the versatility of tournament MVP Erik Etherly, who finished with
ten points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

Ryan
Olander and Rakim Sanders both reached double figures but they combined
to shoot just 6-for-25 from the field, and point guard Desmond Wade
wasn't a whole lot better as he shot 1-for-5. Loyola limited the Stags
to just 28.8% shooting for the game and 14 second-half points. While
Patsos tends to be the center of attention from a media standpoint when
the Greyhounds are playing, it's also important to recognize that
there's a good team at Patsos' disposal as well. If Loyola can get the
right matchup with a 14 or 15-seed, they've got the ability to throw a
scare into someone.

Quick Hitters

1. The top four seeds in the Sun Belt are all gone before the final, with three-seed Denver being the last to go. Western Kentucky
knocked off the Pioneers 67-63 in the second semifinal in Hot Springs,
setting up a date with North Texas for the title. The Mean Green beat
Arkansas State in the first semifinal.

2. There was also an upset in the Summit League semis as top-seed Oral Roberts
lost to Western Illinois 54-53. Dominique Morrison led the Golden
Eagles with 23 points, but his teammates shot just 11-for-36 from the
field. Terell Parks led the Leathernecks with 14 points and eight
rebounds, and Ceola Clark III added 11 points. WIU will take on two-seed
South Dakota State in Tuesday's title game, as the Jackrabbits beat
Southern Utah 63-47.

3. Two of the four road teams in the first round of the MAC tournament found a way to win, with Northern Illinois knocking off Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan
upsetting Bowling Green. The first half between NIU and EMU featured
just 29 points (18-11 NIU) and 17 combined turnovers. As for CMU, a
Derek Jackson three with 1:40 remaining put the Chippewas up for good
and Austin McBroom scored a team-high 20 points.

4. It was a busy day on the coaching carousel as Winthrop decided not the bring back Randy Peele, and Miami (OH)
head coach Charlie Coles retired following the Redhawks' 60-53 loss at
Toledo in a MAC tournament first round game. One name that has already
been mentioned in regards to the Miami (OH) job is Arizona associate
head coach James Whitford, as he spent 11 years on Coles' staff with
eight of those being as the top assistant.

5. Two other coaching moves that didn't surprise many were Brown deciding not to renew Jesse Agel's contract, and UNCG
removed Wes Miller's interim tag. Miller's the youngest head coach in
college basketball, but his promotion sparked the Spartans run to the
North Division title in the SoCon.

66-56. RPI: South Dakota State 58, Southern Utah 244. Analysis:
Nice comeback win for the Thunderbirds against Oakland on Sunday, but that’s as

Arkansas State 243. Analysis: Arkansas State used the second-day
advantage to knock off the top seed, but playing a third straight day is
exponentially tougher. Line: North Texas -1. Pick: North Texas

Illinois State 100. Analysis: After a bit of a late-season swoon,
Creighton is back. The Redbirds can’t get enough points to justify
taking them. Line: Creighton -5. Pick: Creighton

Analysis: Drexel’s defense is among the best in the country. If the
Dragons can slow Kent Bazemore, who scored 37 against them last week,
they should roll. Line: Drexel -3. Pick: Drexel 67,

        Regular-season meetings: Feb. 14 – George Mason 62-61; Feb. 25 – VCU
89-77. RPI: VCU 65, George Mason 79. Analysis: This may be
an NCAA Tournament elimination game. VCU appears to have the slightly
better team. Line: VCU -6. Pick: Virginia Commonwealth

158, Albany 219. Analysis: The top seed isn’t playing as well as

basketball. Line: Stony Brook -3. Pick: Stony Brook 73,

        meetings: Jan. 11 – Stony Brook 89-49*, Feb. 9 – Stony Brook 80-68.
RPI: Stony Brook 151, Maryland-Baltimore County 334. Analysis:
It will be hard for Stony Brook to cover because its starters could be
resting by halftime. Line: Stony Brook -3. Pick: Stony
        Brook 73, Maryland-Baltimore County 56.

        meetings: Jan. 11 – Albany 86-63; Feb. 9 – New Hampshire 69-64.
RPI: Albany 232, New Hampshire 303. Analysis: New Hampshire
has nice balance, but Albany has a solid go-to scorer in Gerardo Suero
for the stretch run. Line: Albany -3. Pick: Albany

        meetings: Jan. 16 – Vermont 79-65; Feb. 6 – Vermont 73-63. RPI:
Vermont 161, Maine 281. Analysis: Vermont is a serious contender
to win this tournament and secure an NCAA bid. Line: Vermont -9.
        Pick: Vermont 75, Maine 63.

        meetings: Jan. 22 – Boston U. 65-46*; Feb. 25 – Boston U. 64-55.
RPI: Boston U. 188, Hartford 308. Analysis: Curious line
after the Terriers whipped Hartford twice. It’s concerning, but you
still have to go with BU. Line: Boston U. -3. Pick:
        Boston U. 66, Hartford 55.

State 280, Eastern Washington 211. Analysis: If familiarity
breeds contempt, this one should be contention. It’s the third time the
two sides have played in two weeks. Line: Eastern Washington -7½.
Pick: Eastern Washington 72, Idaho State 65.

USF Picks Up a Big Win: Sunday Thoughts

It wasn't pretty but USF found a way to get the job done, beating Cincinnati 46-45 to move to 11-5 in the Big East and 18-11 overall. Freshman point guard Anthony Collins made a pair of free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining to give the Bulls the win, and while it isn't a resume-building win the Bulls did the simplest thing a bubble team can do this time of the year: they won. Collins, who is going to be an outstanding point guard in the Big East as he gains experience, led USF with 14 points and five assists and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick added eight and ten rebounds.

The burning question is what this win does for USF's tournament chances, and the response is a simple one: they're still alive. The same goes for Cincinnati in spite of their non-conference strength of schedule (321 going into today's action). While teams can't control what their opponents do there is the simple aspect of taking care of your own business, and if that's done the door will remain open.

Stan Heath's Bulls are 14-1 at home this season, a record that may not impress when considering the opposition but they've played in three different arenas due to renovations to the Sun Dome. For this group to be in position to earn their first NCAA berth in 20 years (1992) is an impressive achievement when all things are considered. USF has games remaining at Louisville and against West Virginia at home before the Big East Championship in New York, and Cincinnati closes with #10 Marquette at home and at Villanova.

Stony Brook wins America East: Dallis Joyner scored 12 points and four other players scored between seven and nine points as Stony Brook beat Maine 55-48, wrapping up the outright America East title and grabbing the one-seed in next week's conference tournament. Steve Pikiell's Seawolves shot just 37% from the field but they were better on the defensive end of the floor, holding New Hampshire to 32.1% from the field and 4-for-21 from three.

Big Games Later Today

#15 Wisconsin at #9 Ohio State (4 PM, CBS)
This is a big one for the Buckeyes in regards to both the Big Ten title and the opportunity to grab a one-seed in the NCAA tournament, while the Badgers would do wonders for their NCAA seeding possibilities with a win. Ohio State is 17-1 at home this season, and a big part of their win in Madison on February 4th was their defending of the three. Wisconsin, who scores 35.2% of their points from three (per statsheet.com), shot 5-for-27 from beyond the arc in that contest.

That was also during a period when Jordan Taylor was struggling from the field, and clearly he'll be the focal point of what the Badgers look to do offensively. Aaron Craft is an outstanding defensive point guard, which will make for a fun battle within the game. If William Buford is scoring at an efficient rate it will be tough for Wisconsin to leave Columbus with a win.

Loyola (MD) at Manhattan (4 PM)
Iona already has the top seed wrapped up for next weekend's MAAC tournament but seeds two through four are all up for grabs. Fairfield (at Rider; 3:30 PM) also has a shot but the focus will be on Loyola's trip north to take on the Jaspers. Loyola won the first meeting 61-60 in Baltimore on January 5th and a lot has changed with both teams since then.

Rhamel Brown is one of the country's best shot blockers when taking height into consideration (he's only 6'6" but averages 2.5 rejections per game), but he'll have a tough matchup with Loyola calling on the likes of Erik Etherly. The first meeting was bizarre in that the Greyhounds won despite shooting 30.5% from two, and a Dylon Cormier three in the final seconds was the difference. Expect another tight affair at Draddy this afternoon.

California at Colorado (5:30 PM, FSN)
The visit from the Bay Area schools could not have gone worse for Colorado to this point, as they were blown out on Thursday night by Stanford...and then watched the Cardinal lose at Utah on Saturday. To say the least this is a huge game for Tad Boyle's team as the Golden Bears are the only team in the Pac-12 with a Top 50 RPI. A win over Cal will by no means punch Colorado's ticket (they aren't close at present time) but it will keep them alive, and in order to do so Carlon Brown needs to snap out of his funk.

Good luck doing that against Jorge Gutierrez, who is one of the best defenders in the country. Add in Justin Cobbs playing outstanding basketball of late and this will be a tough task for Colorado, but it can be done. Spencer Dinwiddie is one of the best freshmen in the conference and Andre Roberson has been good all season long, so they'll have a shot to knock off the Bears if they can keep Cobbs, Gutierrez and Allen Crabbe under wraps.

#16 Florida State at Miami (6 PM, ESPNU)
How's this for a bubble twist: Miami center Reggie Johnson has been declared ineligible by the NCAA and will not play tonight against Florida State, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. That means the Hurricanes will need even more from Kenny Kadji, who has played well this season, if they're to beat the Seminoles at home. FSU is deep inside with Bernard James, Xavier Gibson, Okaro White and John Kreft, meaning that they're better equipped to navigate foul trouble and that was before the Johnson news hit.

Malcolm Grant, Shane Larkin and Durand Scott will need to control the tempo if Miami is to take care of business at home, and if they can turn over the Florida State guards that would be even better. Maybe this is another game Michael Snaer wins at the end as he owns a pair of buzzer-beaters this season, but FSU may have caught a break with the Johnson news.

Lobos Take Win and Driver's Seat: Wednesday's Recap

Wednesday night's game between New Mexico and San Diego State was a big one for the visitors, as Steve Alford's team didn't own a single win over a Top 25 team. But also on the line was sole possession of first place in the Mountain West after UNLV fell at TCU on Tuesday night.

And the team many expected to win the conference before the season began, New Mexico, took control of the wheel ahead of their matchup with the Runnin' Rebels with a 77-67 win at Viejas Arena. Kendall Williams posted his highest point total since January 7th against North Dakota, scoring a game-high 21 points, and Drew Gordon was a handful inside as he finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

"I think Kendall Williams was probably the most important guy, but Drew Gordon was very good with the way he played," remarked SDSU head coach Steve Fisher in his postgame radio interview. "They have guys that stepped up. Whether it was guys that started or coming off the bench, they made it difficult for us."

Speaking of those reserves, the New Mexico bench outscored San Diego State's reserves 33-12 with guard Jamal Fenton providing 15 of those points. The decision-making of both he and Hugh Greenwood was going to be an important aspect of the game to keep track of, and they were solid in combining for just two turnovers (both by Greenwood).

Fenton's scoring was also welcome due to the fact that leading scorer Tony Snell was held scoreless, as he missed all four of his shots from the field. But the Lobos were able to make up for that due to their reserves, which also included Chase Adams scoring eight points in seven minutes of action.

Jamaal Franklin led the Aztecs with 16 points and ten rebounds and Tim Shelton (13 points) and James Rahon (11) also reached double figures, but Chase Tapley couldn't get going as he shot 3-for-11 from the field. As a team SDSU made just three off their fourteen three-point attempts, and when compared to the Lobos' 10-for-19 night that's a tough mountain to climb.

Next up for New Mexico is a home game against UNLV on Saturday, and a win at The Pit would make all three teams 2-2 against each other. That would in turn place more emphasis on how each of the three does against the non-contenders, and New Mexico has yet to drop one of those games. To say the least Saturday offers UNM a golden opportunity to take full control of the Mountain West race.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Illinois drops a close one at home to Purdue, and it may be approacing "that time" in Champaign.
From the orange blazer donned by head coach Bruce Weber to the fact that Illinois had lost five of their last six games, Wednesday's game against Purdue dripped of desperation for the Fighting Illini. But that still wouldn't be enough for Illinois, who fell at home 67-62, dropping their sixth game out of the last seven. While the season still has games left to be played Illinois doesn't have the look of a team poised to turn things around, meaning that the chances of returning to the Big Dance are dwindling away. And in the postgame press conference the words coming from the head coach didn't sound like those of a man confident that his guys could turn things around.

"Instead of creating toughness and developing a team, I coached not to lose this year. That's really sad." To be fair Weber did also say that "it's never too late" to turn things around, and while that is the case one has to wonder if this group has the ability not just physically but mentally to do so. Illinois shot 3-for-21 from beyond the arc against Purdue, and while that didn't reach the depths of SMU's shooting (3-for-29 in a 28-point outing for their entire team) with a 7-footer like Meyers Leonard (4-7 FG, nine points, 12 rebounds) inside that's inexcusable. Until this group executes better offensively they'll continue to struggle, and the longer that happens the louder the "job security" talk gets.

2. Max Good's road warriors tighten up the WCC race with a win at #16 Saint Mary's.
Loyola Marymount may have some mystifying losses to their credit this season, there's little doubt that the Lions are the best road team in the WCC. LMU spoiled "Senior Night" for Saint Mary's as they beat the Gaels 75-60, moving to 7-1 in league road games this season. Drew Viney (17 points) and Anthony Ireland (16 points, seven assists) led the way and Jarred DuBois added 15 off the bench for LMU, who won despite allowing the Gaels to grab 16 offensive rebounds. Rob Jones led the way for SMC with 25 points and 15 rebounds but Matthew Dellavedova was quiet (ten points, six assists) and Stephen Holt was lost for the game early in the second half with a knee injury.

What this result does is drop Saint Mary's into a tie for first place with Gonzaga in the loss column, which more than opens up the possibility of the Bulldogs winning at least a share of their 12th consecutive WCC regular season title. And of course Mark Few's team is the only one to have beaten Loyola Marymount at home, as they beat the Lions 78-59 in Spokane last week. So even with the discussion of NCAA bids stopping at three (adding BYU into the discussion), LMU has the look of a team that can get hot in Las Vegas and leave with the automatic bid.

3. Miami lets a great opportunity slip away as North Carolina grabs 24 offensive rebounds in the win.
North Carolina shot just 5-for-18 from beyond the arc, and while Miami wasn't a great deal better at 8-for-23 the Hurricanes had every opportunity to take advantage of that lack of accuracy. But they couldn't, and UNC's work on the offensive glass was the big reason why. The Tar Heels grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 23 second chance points in their 73-64 victory. North Carolina was also a plus-10 in points from the foul line, as they shot 16-for-23 from the charity stripe (Miami: 6-for-9). Harrison Barnes scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds and John Henson added a double-double with 14 and 11 (with three blocks) to keep the Heels tied atop the ACC in the loss column (9-2; Duke and Florida State are both 8-2). Durand Scott led four Hurricanes in double figures with 15 points but they were unable to add another big win to their resume, and rebounding was the big reason why.

Quick Hitters

1. While beating Villanova isn't a "marquee" win by any stretch of the imagination, the fact that USF
was able to take care of business is a good sign for the Bulls as they
head into the stretch run. In the 65-51 win over the Wildcats, Victor
Rudd Jr. scored 14 points and Anthony Collins added ten points and seven
assists as USF moved to 9-4 in Big East play. The Bulls need to find a
resume-building victory at some point, but to say the least this season
is progress for a program that taken more than its fair share of lumps
during their time in the conference.

2. In a stunning result in the MAAC, Marist beat Loyola (MD)
72-54 in Poughkeepsie as Adam Kemp finished two blocks short of a
triple-double (17 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks) and three other
starters scored in double figures. The Red Foxes' win also gives Iona, who won 75-62 at Rider, sole possession of first place with two games remaining on the league slate.

3. Warren Niles scored 24 points and Michael Craion 18 to help lead Oral Roberts
past IPFW 75-71 in Fort Wayne, clinching the Summit League regular
season crown for the Golden Eagles. ORU has won 17 of their last 18
games and will host Akron as part of the Sears BracketBusters event, and
they're going to be a tough out in the conference tournament in a
couple of weeks.

4. While New Mexico may have locked up a third bid for the Mountain West, thanks to both Wyoming and Colorado State
that may be all the league gets come Selection Sunday. Michael Lyons
knocked down six three-pointers and scored 24 points to lead Air Force
past the Cowboys 58-53 in Laramie. And in Boise it was Derrick Marks who
went the length of the court to score the game-winning bucket with
under a second remaining to push Boise State past CSU 70-69. Given their
tenuous statuses going into Wednesday, Wyoming and Colorado State may
have seen their bubbles burst with these defeats.

5. Back in 2004-05 Savannah State
went 0-28, and there were few who thought it possible that the Tigers
would one day sit in first place in the MEAC. That day has come thanks
to Delaware State's 73-63 overtime win at Norfolk State,
with Tahj Tate's 25 points leading the victors. Brandon Wheeless scored
17 points to lead Norfolk State (10-3), who just like DSU (9-3) is a
game behind Savannah State (9-2) in the loss column but the Tigers have
two games in hand on the Spartans.

6. Neil Watson's game-tying three with less than a second remaining got Southern Miss
to overtime in a key Conference USA battle with Tulsa, a game the
Golden Eagles went on to win 77-69 to remain tied with Memphis atop the
conference standings. Jonathan Mills scored a career-high 25 points and
grabbed ten rebounds to lead Southern Miss, whose win also establishes
two games of separation between themselves and Memphis and the rest of
C-USA.

7. LaMarcus Reed III scored 18 points to help lead UT-Arlington
back from a 15-point deficit in beating Stephen F. Austin 51-47 to
remain undefeated in Southland play at 12-0. The Mavericks will take a
16-game win streak into Saturday's Sears BracketBusters matchup at Weber
State, and with their three-game lead in the loss column UTA is well on
their way to the Southland regular season crown.

8. Garrett Stutz knocked down all four of his three-point attempts and finished with 21 points and ten rebounds to lead #24 Wichita State
past Missouri State 73-58 to clinch at least a share of the Missouri
Valley crown. The Shockers have now won 13 of their last 14 games, and
the defeat was of the triple-overtime variety at Drake. Gregg Marshall's
team seems to be clicking just as the games become magnified in
importance, which is a good thing.

9. Northwestern let a resume-building opportunity slip away as they fell 71-66 at #20 Indiana.
While the win gives the Hoosiers their first 20-win season of the Tom
Crean era, the visiting Wildcats dropped to 15-10 overall and 5-8 in Big
Ten play. John Shurna led Northwestern with 29 points and Frew Crawford
added 18, but no other Wildcat was able to reach double figures. Cody
Zeller led three Indiana starters in double figures with 23 points and
seven rebounds.

Three Notable Performances

1. G Darrion Pellum (Hampton)
33 points, six steals and five rebounds in the Pirates' 82-62 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

2. G Nate Wolters (South Dakota State)
30 points (14-18 FG), five assists and three steals in the Jackrabbits' 80-57 win over North Dakota State.

3. G Kendall Williams and F Drew Gordon (New Mexico)
Williams scored 21 points (7-10 FG) and grabbed four rebounds while
Gordon finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds in the Lobos' 77-67 win
at #15 San Diego State.

Loyola (MD) vs. Iona: Friday Night Thoughts

Friday's schedule may be light but there's some good action to take in as direction of the Ivy and Metro Atlantic races will be determined. Iona (19-5, 11-2) and Loyola (MD) (18-5, 11-2) are tied for first place with two games separating them from the pack (Manhattan and Fairfield leading that group), and the winner would take a big step towards grabbing the regular season crown. What should viewers look forward to? One of the better guards matchups in the MAAC this season as Iona's deep corps led by Scott Machado and Momo Jones takes on a group of Greyhounds led by Dylon Cormier and Robert Olson.

Freshman R.J. Williams leads Loyola in assists with an average of 2.6 assists per game, and he's one of five Greyhounds averaging at least 1.6 assists per game. Jimmy Patsos may not have one guy who dominates the ball at the top of the offense but he's got versatility, as a number of players in the rotation can get things going. Machado runs the show but the Gaels also have Jones and Jermel Jenkins while wings Kyle Smyth and Sean Armand rank among the best shooters in the MAAC.

The interior play, especially concerning the work on the glass, may be the deciding factor in Baltimore. The Greyhounds are one of the best when it comes to attacking the offensive glass as they grab an average of 14.0 offensive boards per game. Erik Etherly and Shane Walker lead the way in the frontcourt for the Greyhounds while the versatile Justin Drummond grabs more than four rebounds per game. Mike Glover and Taaj Ridley start for Iona and while Randy Dezouvre is also a factor in the rotation, the fact that Machado's their second-leading rebounder could be something that comes back to haunt Iona if others don't step up.

Keep an eye on offensive rebounding and turnovers (Iona forces an average of 15.8 turnovers per game while Loyola forces 14.9), especially those of the live-ball variety. If Iona can get running, look out, because while Loyola has the bodies needed to run on occasion it won't be in their best interest to turn the game into a track meet. The battle in the Ivy matches Harvard and Penn, with the Quakers likely being the only team left that can provide some serious intrigue to the title race.

Zack Rosen's been outstanding for Penn this season and with classmate Tyler Bernardini forms one of the best guard tandems you don't see on TV every week. Harvard is deep and experienced, and with Keith Wright and Kyle Casey in the frontcourt Tommy Amaker's Crimson end up being a tough matchup for anyone in the Ancient Eight. They've already blown out Yale on the road, and a win over Penn at the Palestra would go a long way towards punching their first NCAA tournament ticket since 1946.

Milwaukee's trip to Detroit is an important game in the Horizon League from a tournament seeding standpoint as the Panthers are currently third and the Titans are looking to force a four-way tie for third (with Youngstown State and Butler). The Titans have talented pieces with Ray McCallum Jr. and Eli Holman leading the way, but they have issues at times when it comes to making sound decisions and that could be an issue against Milwaukee's tough defense. Saturday's slate is huge and without a doubt the best of the season, but tonight is a good appetizer for the main course.

Top 25 Games
7:00 PM	(21) Harvard at Pennsylvania

NCAA Division I Games
7:00 PM	Dartmouth at Princeton
7:00 PM	Brown at Columbia
7:00 PM	Yale at Cornell
7:00 PM	Milwaukee at Detroit (ESPN3)
7:00 PM	Iona at Loyola (MD) (ESPNU)
9:00 PM	Green Bay at Wright State (ESPNU)

#5 Ohio State vs. #7 Indiana: Sunday Thoughts

Sunday's a quiet day with regards to the number of games on the college basketball schedule, but there's a critical matchup of Top 10 teams in Columbus as #7 Indiana (15-2, 3-2) visits. #5 Ohio State (15-3, 3-2) in their second meeting of the season. The Hoosiers won the first meeting 74-70 back on New Year's Eve, and a big reason why was the way in which they defended point guard Aaron Craft. Tom Crean threw multiple guys at the sophomore point guard, and the varying looks were a big reason why Craft turned the ball over a season-high six times.

Be it Jordan Hulls, Verdell Jones III or Victor Oladipo, the Hoosiers made things difficult for Craft and by extension the Ohio State offense as a whole. William Buford shot 3-for-7 from the field and scored eight points, and also of note in this contest is that Craft attempted the most shots (ten) for the Buckeyes. Jared Sullinger and Cody Zeller essentially canceled each other out with foul trouble for both being an issue for much of the game (Sullinger: 3-5, 15 points and nine rebounds; Zeller: 5-9, 14 points and four rebounds).

From an efficiency standpoint that was Ohio State's worst game of the Big Ten slate thus far, as they averaged exactly one point per possession. Indiana's been the more efficient team when looking at the numbers throughout the season, and they're going to need that to be the case again today if they're to have any shot of winning at Value City Arena. If the Hoosiers can get another good outing from Hulls and Oladipo (combined to score 32 points in the first meeting) they can win, but the return meeting will be an entirely different animal based on how Ohio State played against the two teams they lost to on the road last season.

Ohio State's 87-64 win over Purdue was actually the first meeting of two last season, with E'Twaun Moore going off in the return contest in West Lafayette, so it's likely better to use OSU's rematch with Wisconsin as the example. After losing in Madison 71-67 on February 12, the Buckeyes went off in the March 6 meeting, knocking down 14 of 15 from beyond the arc on their way to the 93-65 victory. Without a Jon Diebler on this year's team that kind of marksmanship is unlikely to happen, but when motivated by the sting of a road defeat Thad Matta's team is extremely difficult to beat.

Also of note: Both Minnesota and Wisconsin have games that they'll be expected to win, and both will need to win for the sake of their respective resumes. The Golden Gophers take on Penn State in Happy Valley and will need to keep Tim Frazier in check, and the Badgers host a Nebraska team that features Bo Spencer. Bo Ryan's team whipped the Huskers in Lincoln in Nebraska's first-ever league game as a Big Ten member, so at the least Doc Sadler's team should have a better feel for the Badgers' style of basketball.

Duke visits Clemson in what could be a trickier game than many will expect, with the Tigers' play at Littlejohn Coliseum being a big reason why. The Tigers, who blew out Florida State at home in their ACC opener, need Devin Booker and Milton Jennings to play well if they're to have a shot at beating Duke. Maryland could use a win to establish themselves as a top-half of the ACC squad, and if they can keep Georgia Tech's Glen Rice Jr. in check the Terps can get it done. Sophomore guard Terrell Stoglin has been one of the league's best scorers to this point in the season, but to be a truly elite player he has to raise his level on the defensive end.

Big games in the MAAC, MVC: The two teams tied for first place in the Metro Atlantic meet in New Rochelle as Iona host Loyola (MD). The Gaels fell to a surprising Manhattan team on Thursday night on an Emmy Andujar three as time expired while the Greyhounds came back to win at Fairfield despite trailing by as many as 17 in the second half. Robert Olson got hot late for Jimmy Patsos' team and in Dylon Cormier the Greyhounds have one of the best players in the league, which should make for an entertaining battle between he and Scott Machado. The Gaels did the exact opposite of Loyola on Thursday, taking their foot off the gas with a 17-point late with less than eight minutes remaining.

And while Wichita State's trip to Terre Haute isn't a matchup of teams atop the Missouri Valley, simply put the Sycamores need the win to avoid dropping to 2-5 in league play. Joe Ragland's played well on the perimeter and Toure Murry is arguably the MVC's best sixth man, but it's been the recent play of center Garrett Stutz that's made the difference for Gregg Marshall's team. Dwayne Lathan and Jake Odum have led the way for Indiana State but the bigger issue has been their defense, as opponents shoot 43.7% from the field. They'll likely need to hold the Shockers to below 40% if they're to win tonight.
