Creighton Tops New Mexico 82-75

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton used a 17-0 run in the final 3:30 to overcome a late nine-point deficit and beat New Mexico, 82-75 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 16,107 at Qwest Center Omaha.

Creighton (1-0) led 4-2 in the opening minutes but would not lead again until consecutive three-pointers from P'Allen Stinnett gave CU a 76-72 lead with 43 seconds to play. Stinnett had eight of his career-high 30 points during the 17-0 run, while teammate Booker Woodfox had the other nine in the scoring binge. Woodfox finished with 26 points, four more than his previous best. The duo scored 44 of CU's 55 second half points, including 23 from Woodfox.

New Mexico (1-1) was led by 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting by Tony Danridge, but the star senior did not attempt a shot in the final 8:26. Also in double-figures were Roman Martinez (15) and Dairese Gary (14).

Stinnett, who exploded onto the scene with 23 second-half points in his season-opening debut last year against DePaul, scored 30 on the night to eclipse his previous high of 24. He was 11-for-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 from downtown, while playing a team-high 32 minutes. Woodfox, making his first career start, had 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. The Bluejays second-half turnaround was keyed by the defensive pressure of Josh Dotzler, who tied a career-best with five steals.

The Bluejays went ahead 2-0 and 4-2 in the opening minutes before UNM went on a 12-0 run keyed by four straight baskets by Danridge. New Mexico would build a lead as large as 15 on a pair of occasions in the first half before CU scored the final five of the first half to trim its halftime deficit to 37-27 at the break.

New Mexico would take its largest lead of the game with 10:17 to play at 59-43 after a three-pointer by Nate Garth. Stinnett would counter with a three-point play to ignite a 10-0 run that also included a jumper from Justin Carter and five points by Woodfox to make it 59-53 in favor of the Lobos.

New Mexico would take a 69-59 lead with 4:34 to play on a trey by Martinez, a lead that later was pushed to 72-63 on a nifty lay-up by Gary with 3:39 to play, before the Jays made their run.

Woodfox started the run with a three-pointer from the corner, following which CU coach Dana Altman used his full timeout to rest his line-up for the stretch run. After a defensive stop, Woodfox hit a jumper and Stinnett would deflect a loose ball off Martinez for a turnover. On the other end Stinnett took a feed from Dotzler to make it 72-70.

Woodfox stepped in to take a pivotal charge in the lane on Gary with 1:54 to play. The Jays took their first lead since the opening minutes on a three-pointer from Stinnett, 73-72, with 1:25 to go. After another defensive stop, Stinnett would drain a three-pointer from the top of the key to give CU a four-point cushion with 43 seconds left. As New Mexico tried to hurry the ball back upcourt, Carter would deflect Martinez's inbounds pass and the Lobos had to foul Woodfox. Woodfox would drain both free throws with 28 seconds left before Stinnett added two more from the stripe with 19 seconds to play.

A three-pointer from Gary with 9.5 seconds left ended the run, but it was too little, too late, as Creighton's Dotzler iced the win with two late free throws.

CollegeHoops.net is lucky to have access to some of the best coaches in college basketball. As part of our preseason interview series, we thought it would be appropriate to ask these basketball minds about the best things that their team and college basketball has to offer.

Steve Alford: New Mexico

We continue this month long Q&A Series with Lobos coach Steve Alford, who has reached 9 postseason tournaments in a 13 years at the D1 level. Coach Alford was kind enough to take time out of his busy preseason schedule to answer questions for CollegeHoops.net:

CollegeHoops.net) What will be the best strength of this year's team?

Steve Alford) Our biggest strength this year will be our guard play. We are very deep and talented at the point and shooting guard spots as well as out on the wing. Chad Toppert was No. 2 in the country in 3-pt. FG% last year (48.0%) and he has the highest career percentage in Lobo history (45.7%).

Sophomore Jonathan Wills continues to improve in his second year in the program. We went 14-3 last year in the 17 games he started in the shooting guard spot.

Sophomore Dairese Gary will be one of the top point guards in our league this season. He started 28 games at the point last year and his 105 assists were more than any Lobo had posted in the previous seven seasons.

Tony Danridge and Roman Martinez are both very versatile wing players. Tony was supposed to be one of our top players last year but he had a season-ending injury right before the start of practice. He is 100% healthy now and could be an All-MWC player in his fifth year in the program. Roman is very savvy and knows how to play basketball. He played a lot of forward for us this year, but he can also step out and hit from long range. He gives us a solid performance every time he steps on the floor

We also have three excellent newcomers in freshmen Nate Garth, Phillip McDonald and Curtis Dennis. Garth is a very fast and athletic point guard. His speed and vision are the best parts of his game. Dennis is a big guard who can play on the wing while McDonald was one of the top prep players in the state of Texas last season. We are very excited about what they will bring to our program.

CollegeHoops.net) Are there any weaknesses that concern you?

SA) The one area I am concerned with is our youth in rebounding the ball. Daniel Faris is our only returning post player for the second year in a row. He continues to improve and is one of the top big men in our league, but we are very young in the post. We have three very talented freshmen in Will Brown, A.J. Hardeman and Kem Nweke. Kem was in the program last year as a redshirt, and obviously none of these guys have played college basketball yet. They will all be great players in our program, my only concern is our youth in the rebounding positions.

CHN) Who will be the biggest leaders on this year's squad?

SA) We are counting on our three seniors – Chad Toppert, Daniel Faris and Tony Danridge – to all be leaders on our team this year. They each lead in a different way, but all are very effective in our program. Tony is not as vocal as Chad and Daniel, but he leads by example. Tony doesn’t cut any corners in the weight room or practice and our younger guys see that and learn from it. Chad’s leadership is shown through his hard work. He has built himself into one of the top shooters in the nation (No. 2 in the NCAA in 3-pt. FG% last year at 48.0%). Guys see that Chad’s hard work is paying off and it reinforces what they are doing. Daniel is the most vocal of the group. He helps to set the tone in practice and workouts. He is also the only returning post player we have so he helps the younger post guys during drills and practice.

CHN) Tie score, with just a few seconds left … who will be your go-to guy in those situations?

SA) I don’t want to give away too many of our plans before the season even starts. I will say that I am excited about the fact that we will have a lot of options for that situation this season.

CHN) What's the best change you've made in your coaching style in recent seasons?

SA) I don’t know that I have changed much in recent seasons. What I do try to do is learn as much as I can each year and apply that to my coaching style. I try to take the experiences I have gone through and apply the lessons learned to how I approach the job at hand. Hopefully, that has made me a better coach and will continue to do so in the future.

CHN) If everything goes according to plan, what's the best case scenario this season?

SA) Our goal is to win the Mountain West Conference and get into the NCAA Tournament. After that, we want to be in a position to advance as far as we can in postseason play.

CHN) Any last words to New Mexico fans?

SA) We just want to encourage as many people as we can to get out to The Pit and see a game. The Pit is as good a place to see a college basketball game and be a part of the atmosphere as any in the country. We want everyone to be there in their Lobo red and help us sell out every game this year.

2007-08: 24-9, 11-5, 3^rd

2007-08 postseason: NIT

New Mexico could not quite keep up with BYU and UNLV last season and ended up in the NIT. Those three will battle it out for the top spot once again and this year all three could end up in the NCAA Tournament if all goes well. The Lobos return an experienced group and also bring in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation for a team outside of one of the traditional power conferences. Coach Steve Alford might have some competition from BYU and UNLV this year, but the future of the Mountain West Conference could belong to the Lobos.

Who's Out:

What keeps New Mexico out of the top spot in the conference is the graduation of J.R. Giddens. The guard averaged 16.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks. All of those were team highs except the assists and replacing all of that production will be nearly impossible. Giddens is the big loss, but Jamaal Smith, Darren Prentice, Johnnie Harris and Monquel Pegues all played significant minutes. Smith, who averaged 8.8 points per game, and Prentice were both quality shooters off the bench and Harris and Pegues provided the frontcourt with the only depth they had.

Who's In:

Now the depth up front will have to come from Will Brown, A.J. Hardeman, Ken Nweke and Isaiah Rusher. Brown and Rusher are both 6-9 and tough players who will likely see a majority of the minutes in the frontcourt off the bench. Nweke, at 6-10 and 265 pounds, is a big body who can clog the lane and his year on the bench last season as a redshirt should have him ready to earn some minutes. The class gets even better on the perimeter where Phillip McDonald, Nate Garth, Curtis Dennis and Chris Johanson join the squad. McDonald is the prize of the class. The shooting guard has a nice touch on his shot and can score from anywhere on the floor. Like McDonald, Dennis is 6-5, can shoot and adds good size to the perimeter. The most important newcomer could end up being Garth. The team needs another point guard and Garth is the answer. He might not put up big numbers any time soon, but Garth is a smart player who knows how to handle the ball, dictate tempo and be a leader on the court.

Who to Watch:

But Garth only needs to come in off the bench after the stellar freshman campaign that Dairese Gary had last year. It only took Gary five games before he was inserted into the starting lineup and he stayed there the rest of the season. Gary is not the best shooter around, but he can hit the three-point shot. Much of his scoring was done by getting to the basket and his scoring output should increase this year as everybody tries to help replace Giddens' production. Chad Toppert, the only other player to average double figures in scoring besides Giddens, will likely find a starting spot on the wing. For part of last year he was used as a shooter off the bench and he thrived in that role, knocking down an incredible 48.0 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. He is better suited as a substitute unless he can add another dynamic to his scoring, but he is too experienced and talented to leave out of the starting five for now. Jonathan Wills rarely put up big scoring numbers as a freshman, but he is a great defender. With the newcomers, Gary, Toppert and Wills, New Mexico has a lot of different options on the perimeter and Coach Alford will be able to mix and match them and put the players that give the team the best chance to win during any situation on the floor.

Final Projection:

Roman Martinez will be seeing some time on the wing too. The 6-6 El Paso, Texas product spent most of his time at the four spot last year, but that could change with the return of Tony Danridge. Like Martinez, Danridge is undersized to play the four spot, but the high flying wing spent plenty of time as a power forward two years ago when he averaged 12.5 points per game. He missed all of the 2007-2008 campaign with a broken leg. The small frontcourt puts a lot of pressure on 6-9 forward Daniel Faris. Faris was second on the team in rebounding last year with 4.5 per contest. Without Giddens bailing out of the undersized frontcourt, Faris, Danridge and Martinez will have to work a lot harder on the glass and be much more productive than they have in the past.

State of '08: The Two-Program States

What is the top D1 basketball program in each state.. and which program is the worst? While there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there are great debates to be had in loaded regions like California, North Carolina, and Texas. The State of '08 is a state by state ranking based mostly on recent success (the last five years) mixed in with subjective factors such as conference prestige, historical success, and overall program direction.

Up first today: The seven 2-program states.. followed by individual state articles. Note that 8 states have either one or no teams (Alaska). For more info, check out the State of '08 introduction.

TWO PROGRAM STATES

DELAWARE - The "First State" starts off our cross-country journey..

Delaware - The First State was one of the hardest to rank. While Delaware was a top mid-major program at the turn of the century.. the Hens hit some lean years culminating in an embarrassing 2007 (5 wins). But UDel edges out their counterpart in large part due to being in a far superior conference (CAA vs MEAC).

Delaware State - From 2005 to 2007, the Hornets were easily the better team.. making the Tourney in 2005 and winning 20 games in 2006. This was an amazing run considering how awful the team was earlier in the decade.

MONTANA - Did you even know Montana had two teams?

Montana - Despite having virtually the same success last year (232 RPI vs 236th), the Grizzlies get the nod here based on long-term success and overall statute. Montana made the big dance in 2005 & 2006.

Montana State - The last season that Montana State was significantly better than their rivals was in 2002.. yet Montana managed to sneak into the NCAA Tournament that year and steal State's thunder.

NEBRASKA - Score one for the "mid-majors"..

Creighton - A no-brainer here.. Creighton has been one of the top 40 programs or so over the last decade. Even last year, when it seemed like Dana Altman's crew were struggling, they still beat the Huskers by 12 and finished substantially higher in the computer rankings.

Nebraska - Nebraska is never awful.. but its also been awhile since they've been good. It always seems like they hover between 90-110 in the RPI.. completely mediocre for a BCS program. I don't see any major success on the horizon for the next few years either.

NEVADA - A virtual tie. (This was easily the hardest choice to make)

UNLV - Lon Kruger has done a great job getting this program back on track. Coming off back to back tournament trips, a third is definitely within reach as top players like Wink Adams return. UNLV also has the added benefit of being in a more challenging league (the MWC) and being located in Las Vegas, a nationally recognized (if not respected) city.

Nevada - Coming off four straight NCAA Tournament trips, Nevada had a disappointing season despite winning 20 games. But a recruiting class ranked Top 25 nationally has fans hoping for a return trip in 2009. While Nevada has had better success in the past five years, UNLV's past and projected future is brighter.

NEW HAMPSHIRE - Perhaps the worst basketball state in the union?

New Hampshire - UNH is simply a bad program, as the Wildcats have peaked with an RPI of 250 in the last decade. But UNH has at least been competitive in America East games recently.. winning 20 games in the past three seasons.

Dartmouth - One of the worst programs in the country, Dartmouth hasn't been above 250th in the RPI since 1999. The low was 2004 with an abysmal RPI of 324th (3rd worst in the country). In the last three years, the Big Green have won 11 Ivy League games.. which is so bad that it makes UNH look decent.

NEW MEXICO - Competition between these two programs is high now that NMSU is out of the doldrums.

New Mexico - While the numbers of these program are relatively similar since 2006, UNM gets the edge for long-term stability, for being in a higher-ranked conference ..and playing in a cool arena (The Pit).

New Mexico State - As recently as 2005, NMSU was one of the worst programs in the country. But moving to the WAC (and hiring Reggie Theus) helped lead to a shocking rebound that culminated in a 2007 conference title.

WEST VIRGINIA - WVU is easily the peak of the Mountain State..

West Virginia - Bob Huggins or not, WVU is a far superior program to Marshall making this a no-brainer. WVU has been Top 60 in the RPI each of the last four seasons..

Marshall - On the flip-side, Marshall hasn't approached the Top 100.. and its results haven't improved since moving from the MAC to the CUSA.

JR Giddens: NBA Draft Profile

Accolades: MWC co-Player of the Year (08), First Team All-MWC (08), Honorable Mention All-American – AP (08), Third Team High-Major All-American – CHN (08), Honorable Mention All-MWC (07), Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (04), Big 12 All-Freshman Team (04), McDonald’s All-American – high school (03), Oklahoma’s Gatorade Player of the Year – high school (03).

Scouting Report: A highly decorated wing player with NBA athleticism.

Strengths: Great athlete – track athlete in high school also. Crazy vertical – reportedly 40” or more. Strong finisher – attacks the rim, dunks on people. Nice elevation & extension on his jumper. Exceptional rebounder for a guard. Long arms. Strong physique. Big time scorer in college. Decent assist man. Shot for a great percentage for a guard – 51.6% this year. Gets into the passing lanes for steals. Great shot-blocker for a guard.

Weaknesses: Age – is already 23-years-old. Horrible free throw shooter. Had off-court issues in college. Had attitude issues in the past. Needs to improve on his ball-handling for the NBA. Still inconsistent. Defense still needs improvement. Needs to become a more consistent three-point shooter for the NBA.

Projected 2008 Draft Range: Early to mid second round pick.

Consensus: Giddens has all the tools to be an NBA pro. However, the fact that he is up to four years older than other prospects and has had a shady past casts a shadow on his draft stock.

Today's Game Predictions: NIT & CBI

New Mexico (24-8) at California (16-15)

According to the odds, this is the closest NIT game of the night, as the Bears are favored by just 3 points. Despite everybody's love of the Pac-10, Cal defines mediocrity and doesn't deserve to be hosting a game tonight. When a home team is favored by only a couple points in postseason play, its basically an admission that the road team is more talented. Cal lost to the only other MWC team they've faced, Utah at home back in December. If Cal can't beat the Utes, they probably couldn't beat UNM outside of a monster 30+ night from Ryan Anderson.

Prediction: New Mexico

UAB (22-10) at VCU (24-7)

7:00 PM ESPN2

Both of these teams were considered bubble squads up until the final week of the season.. but apparently the NIT folks didn't think highly of either. This is only a 4-5 game and somehow teams like Nebraska and FSU were seeded higher. Despite a disappointing CAA Tournament loss, VCU is still a legitimately solid team in my eyes and shouldn't have trouble putting away UAB. I like the home team to win big, surpassing the 5.5 point spread.

Prediction: VCU

Miami (17-15) at Tulsa (20-13)

What might be the most competitive game of the CBI's opening round, Miami (OH) heads to Tulsa to face the Golden Hurricanes. I have little respect for anyone in the CUSA not named Memphis (like the above prediction), and I favor Miami here along with Utah against UTEP. The Redhawks started the season on fire, stunk it up in the middle, and then finished on a confident streak.. almost knocking off Kent State in the MAC Tournament.

Why They Can Surprise:

Coach Steve Alford has done something for J.R. Giddens. The senior guard has seen a lot of coaches under his tutelage, but this year Giddens has finally almost lived up to his high expectations. Averaging 16.0 points per game is nothing new, but now Giddens has kept the turnovers down. In fact, the team only commits 12.2 turnovers per game thanks to the development of Giddens.

New Mexico has the best three-point field-goal percentage in the nation and it is not like they do not take a lot of long balls. Chad Toppert knocks down almost three per game and hits at a 48.3 percent clip. Jamaal Smith does not take as many shots from outside, but he hits at an incredible 50.0 percent. Those two boost the percentage, but players like Darren Prentice and Giddens will make some shots from behind the arc.

Why They Can Disappoint:

Giddens leads the team in blocked shots and that is not good since he is a 6-5 guard. The Lobos lack an interior presence on the defensive end and it can become relatively easy for bigger teams to back in and get some easy buckets. Daniel Faris, at 6-9 and 235 pounds, is often the only forward on the floor. He is not a bad defender, but he is not a shot blocker either. Yet, New Mexico still only allows the opposition to shoot about 41 percent from the floor, so they make it difficult to get the ball inside in the first place.

Who To Watch:

The Lobos have ten players who average about a dozen minutes per game or more. Giddens, Smith and Toppert will do a lot of scoring, but there are some other important players who do not put up such gaudy numbers. Dairese Gary can handle the ball and actually leads the team in assists. He is also a superb defender. At 6-6, wing Roman Martinez usually starts at the four position. He is not strong enough or tall enough to compete with most opposing power forwards, but he makes up for it with tenacity and footwork.
