As we get closer to Selection Sunday, standout performances are starting to pop up all over the country, and not just from the usual suspects. With so many teams attempting to make statements with marquee wins, there are plenty of opportunities for players to earn Player of the Week consideration.

 

Midway through the 2009 college basketball season, the top 30 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, the nation's most coveted college basketball honor, were named today by The Los Angeles Athletic Club's John R. Wooden Award Committee. Composed of the players who will compete for this season's player of the year award, the midseason list is based on individual player performance and team records during the first half of the season.

About the Bob Cousy Award:

Nominees for the Bob Cousy Award presented by The Hartford were solicited through all Division I, II and III institutions. A committee comprised of media members narrowed the field to 17 student athletes from all three divisions of men's NCAA college basketball. The group of 17 will be reviewed and a winner chosen by a Blue Ribbon selection committee comprised of Hall of Famers, Mr. Cousy, college coaches, media members, and a vote representing the top vote getter in the on-line poll at www.cousyaward.com.

The last full week of January always means two things: the NFL gets pushed to the back-burner for the first time in over five months and, more importantly, college basketball is about to enter its stretch run. The pretenders and contenders are starting to separate themselves, and conference play is really heating up. This week was arguably the most significant week of the season thus far, as favorites in several conferences began to assert themselves, and the No. 1 team in the country lost yet again.

With other sports mercifully coming to an end, basketball is now taking its rightful place atop the sports landscape. Thanks to this week's Player of the Week, the national media had reason to give college hoops a serious look.

 

The Collegehoops.net Top 100 is the ultimate ranking of college basketball's best players.  This is the second of four quarterly editions for the 2008-09 college basketball season. The next edition will be released in March, prior to the Conference Tournaments.
