Early 2012-13 Ranking: Teams 46 to 60

Early 2012-13 Ranking, here are teams 46 to 60.

Its worth
  repeating that I had to
  make many assumptions about the
  NBA Draft in compiling the
following list, and I've noted which assumptions I've made. This ranking will
be updated later in the summer once players have made their official draft
decisions. Also uncertain is where some remaining unsigned recruits will end
up, and how the coaching carousel will take form. I
purposely made no assumptions about where unsigned prospects will end up. (All
prospect rankings are according to the

  Rivals 150 ranking.)

Early 2012-13 Ranking: Teams 45-60

46
Miami Another
year under Jim Larranaga should find the Hurricanes on the inside of the NCAA
Tournament bubble. Malcolm Grant departs but he did not have a terribly good
season anyways.

47

Butler After a down year, Butler should once again be
the class of the Horizon League. Transfer Rotnei Clarke gives them a
scoring-punch that was severely lacking this year. Three solid guards enter as
freshmen, who should help with depth.

48
Colorado
Carlon Brown and Austin Dufault are not small loses, but the hope is
that Andre Roberson blossoms into a Pac-12 Player of the Year candidate. The
Buffs recruiting haul is easily their best of the last decade.

49
BYU
The Cougars lose veterans Hartsock and Abouo but should still settle into their
usual bubble-bound slot. Another year of improvement from Matt Carlino should
help.

50
Pittsburgh
Coming off of a disastrous season, Pittsburgh has no where to go but up.
Although Gibbs and Robinson depart, the Panthers welcome 4th ranked recruit
Steven Adams, one of their best-ever recruits. A healthy Tray Woodall would
certainly help as well.

51
UCF After
being a fringe-bubble team that last two years, UCF will once again be hoping to
make the tourney. Although PG AJ Rompza graduates, the team returns solid All-CUSA
caliber players in Keith Clanton, Marcus Jordan, and Isaiah Sykes.

52
Temple
The Owls should take a step back with key senior losses, including leader Ramone
Moore, but expect them to still be competitive in the A10. Khalif Wyatt could
score 20 ppg now that the team is fully in his hands. The recruiting haul might
be Temple's best since 2007.

53
Xavier
Besides leader Tu Holloway, they also loses Kenny Frease and Andre Walker. Role
players like Travis Taylor and Jeff Robinson will really need to step it up if
Xavier wants to makes its 8th tourney in a row. 4-star recruit Semaj Christon is
capable of contributing at PG from day one.

54
UCONN
Jeremy Lamb and Andre Drummond will presumably go pro, and the roster looks
pretty thin without them. Last year's shock tourney run covers up what has been
3 years in a row of .500 or worse basketball in Big East play. Add in the
potential sanctions and Calhoun's health, and you have yourself a lot of
questions.

55
Belmont
Seniors Drew Hanlen, Mick Hedgepeth, and Scott Saunders depart, but Kerron
Johnson and Ian Clark are still two of the A-Sun's top players. Incoming PG
Craig Bradshaw is one of Belmont's better pickups and should fit right into the
program.

56
South Florida
Three seniors that played over 25 minutes per game depart, but South Florida
shouldn't expect too much of a drop-off. USF's 4-person recruiting class is
solid for their standards, but still mediocre as far as the Big East goes.

57
Mississippi St
With Dee Bost a senior and Arnett Moultrie presumably going
pro, Mississippi St loses its leading scorer, passer, rebounder, and defender.
Although an underrated 5-person recruiting class was set to come in, Rick
Stanbury's retirement does open some questions.

58
West Virginia
For a team that often struggled to score the ball, it will be interesting to see
how they'll manage without Kevin Jones and Darryl Bryant. Those two scored
almost 50% of the Mountaineers points. Aaric Murray and Juwan Staten are solid
transfers who will help.

59 Southern
Miss USM was never as good as their gaudy RPI
suggested.. Graduations will put a major dent into their major strength, which
was depth, but their top two scorers do return.

60 Iowa St
The key for Iowa St is whether Royce White decides to go pro. I'm assuming here
that he does, which would mean the Cyclones lose their 3 leading scorers. A pair
of solid transfers enter the mix, as well as their best recruiting class in a
few years.

6.2 rpg, 3.5 apg); F Otto Porter, 6-8 Fr. (9.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 51.8% FG). After a
disappointing first three seasons, Sims has been great during his senior year –
and he saved his best for last. In a 72-70 double-overtime loss to Cincinnati in
the Big East Tournament, Sims had 22 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two
blocks and made layup at the buzzer to send the game into the second overtime.

ppg, 3.8 apg, 48.1% 3s); C Scott Saunders, 6-10 Sr. (10.2 ppg, 5 rpg, 54.8% FG).
Hanlen, who is second in the nation in 3-point percentage, was named first-team
All-Atlantic Sun and is a 3-time Academic All-American.

Georgetown:
With the
improvement of Sims and the emergence of Porter, Georgetown has a lot of
offensive options. Four different Hoyas average between 9.5 and 13.9 points per
game. The Hoyas are shooting 46.3 percent from the floor while scoring 69 points
per game. And Georgetown is even better on defense. It has held opponents to
38.7 percent from the floor and 27 percent from deep. The Hoyas have a plus-4.7
rebounding margin.

Belmont:
The Bruins
dominated the Atlantic Sun and they roll into the tournament having won 14
straight. They also have a 1-point loss at Duke that should give them confidence
when they go up against teams from Power 6 conferences. Belmont is fourth in the
nation at 81.5 points per game. It shoots 48.4 percent from the field (13th
nationally), 37.8 percent from 3 (36th in the country) and 73.6
percent from the foul line (41st in the nation). The Bruins’ 299
3-pointers made is second in the country. Six Bruins average 8.5 points or more.

Georgetown:
Georgetown has been blown out in the first round of the last two NCAA
Tournaments by lower seeds. That will have to be on their minds on Friday
afternoon. While a lot of different Hoyas can score, they are far from
explosive. They shoot just 34.7 percent from the 3-point and they have made just
173 3-pointers. The Hoyas have a negative turnover margin and just a
13.7-to-12.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. If the game is on the line, the Hoyas
struggled from the free throw line, hitting just 69.7 percent. Only two
Georgetown regulars shoot over 71 percent from the charity stripe.

Belmont:
Belmont
struggles on defense at times. It gives up 67.3 points per game, 42.4 percent
from the field and 33.8 from the 3-point line. In a 97-81 loss to Memphis on
Nov. 15, the Tigers scored 51 second-half points and shot 58.6 percent from the
field. That’s a Memphis team that was beaten soundly by the Hoyas. Belmont is a
decent rebounding team, but gets just 11.4 offensive boards per contest.

The Bottom Line:
Could go either way. It makes me hesitate because all of the money is coming in
on the Bruins, but Georgetown’s history could catch up with it.

Top 10 Sweet Sixteen Picks: 2012 Tournament

Top 10 Sexy Sweet Sixteen Picks

Its one
thing to pick a few first round upsets (here
are 10 likely ones), its a whole other thing picking cinderella sweet
sixteen teams. Every good bracket has at least one surprise sweet sixteen team
(if not two), so here are the 10 best ones to choose from:

10
#12 VCU

Can last
year's Cinderella team do it again? In a different spot, I'd think they'd have a
much better chance to make a run, but Wichita St might be the best of the 5
seeds. VCU arguably deserved to be a 10 seed considering their top 40 RPI and
strong finish. If VCU can get past Wichita St, then Indiana in the 2nd round
might actually be an easier game.

9
#14 BYU/Iona

The odds
of either of these teams advancing to the Sweet Sixteen is obviously hurt by the
fact they'd need to win an extra game. But these teams are really 11 or 12 seeds
that got knocked down to 14 because of scheduling issues. Both of these teams
run high-octane, high-tempo offenses and thus should fare well against a
Marquette team that plays a similar style.

8
#11 Texas

While
Cincinnati had a good run in the Big East tournament, they're more than capable
of flaming out early in the Big Dance. Texas has a lot of losses, but most of
them are to Top 30 teams, and the computer rankings say that Cincinnati is not a
Top 30 team. The biggest thing holding Texas back is a lack of 3-pt shooting..
if they happen to find a hot streak and J'Covan Brown is on his A game, the
Sweet Sixteen is easily possible

7
#12 Harvard

With wins
over Florida St and St. Joseph's, Harvard has shown ability to beat post-season
quality teams. Facing Vanderbilt in the first round is not a bad draw for
Harvard, considering Kevin Stalling's teams have been known to fizzle out in the
NCAA Tournament. A potential second round matchup with Wisconsin seems favorable
as the Badgers tempo plays right into Harvard's style.

6
#12 Long Beach St

Long
Beach St lost to Top 5 teams North Carolina and Kansas by just 6 and 8 points in
true road games. That shows you how dangerous the 49ers are. Point guard Casper
Ware was hot in the Big West tournament, and he has the ability to dominate a
game. If Long Beach St could somehow top New Mexico, they might even be favored
in the next match against Louisville or Davidson.

5
#13 Ohio

Two years
ago, Ohio won a first round game against Georgetown, and their opening game
against Michigan seems quite similar. Guard DJ Cooper has star potential, but
his scoring ability is highly eratic. When he's on, Ohio can be extremely
dangeorus.

4
#11 NC State

Appropriately seeded in the 11 range, NC St takes on San Diego St to start
things off. According to KenPom.com and other similar computer ratings, NC State
is actually ranked higher than the Aztecs. In a sense, the ratings suggest this
is really a battle between two 11 seeds, exemplified by the game's 1 point
spread. Lurking beyond San Diego St is Georgetown, arguably the weakest of the 3
seeds.

3
#14 Belmont

Many
thought Belmont had an outside shot at the Top 25 this year, but they lost a
couple close games early before finding their groove late in the season. The
A-Sun champs are feared due to their highly efficient offense. Georgetown rarely
loses to lesser teams, but their zone could play into Belmont's hands. The
winner of this game faces San Diego St or NC State.. Las Vegas could easily
favor Belmont against either of those two.

2
#13 Davidson

Davidson
faces West #4 seed Louisville to open things up. Louisville used stifling
defense to win the Big East tournament, but yet somehow they seem vulnerable.
The Cardinals tend to play a lot of close games, and although they tend to win
those game, it always keeps the door open for a potential upset. If Davidson
manages to squeeze by, they'd face the winner of Long Beach St and New Mexico.

#14 Saint Bonaventure

The
Bonnies, led by star Andrew Nicholson, face East Region #3 FSU to start things
off. Despite winning the ACC title, FSU has shown a willingness to play down to
opponents, and Leonard Hamilton teams have lost in the first round two of the
last three years. A potential second round matchup with either Cincinnati or
Texas looms, but neither of those teams strike fear into anybody.

NCAA Tournament Interviews: Belmont's Kerron Johnson

CHN writer Jon Teitel continues with his NCAA Tournament interviews, this time catching up with Belmont guard Kerron Johnson. The Bruins will be making the second consecutive NCAA tournament appearence as winners of the Atlantic Sun, knocking off FGCU in Saturday's title game. Belmont lost to four-seed Wisconsin in last year's tournament appearance.

Jon Teitel: You were an AAU teammate of Jon Hood, who is recovering from a torn ACL on the bench of top-ranked Kentucky. Have you talked to him at all during his rehab from surgery?

Kerron Johnson: I have not talked to him lately, but heard that he tore his ACL. We never really kept in touch, but hopefully he will recover soon.

JT: Last year you led the entire nation in steal percentage. What is your secret to being a great defender?

KJ: It is just about anticipation and being able to study what your opponent likes to do in certain situations. Coach Byrd says that the best defenders look like they are hardly working at all.

JT: You scored 13 points in a second round loss to Wisconsin in last year's tournament. What did you learn from that game that you think can help you this time around?

KJ: The overall experience of being in that type of atmosphere helped us. Now I play with more confidence and know that I deserve to be out there with all those other great players.

JT: You scored 15 points in your season opener, a one-point loss at Duke. What was it like to play at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and what is the key to playing well against a team like Duke?

KJ: Playing at Cameron was awesome; it is one of the best atmospheres in college basketball. It taught me that I have to keep my composure and cannot lose my cool. To beat a team like Duke you have to be disciplined and let the game come to you.

JT: You had 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in a win over Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun tournament title game en route to being named tournament MVP. How on earth does a 6'1" point guard get 11 rebounds in the biggest game of the season?!

KJ: I was just trying to do what my team needed me to do in that game. I was guarding a bigger guard who liked to crash the boards, so I just tried to help our big men rebound. Rebounds are all about toughness, and I just wanted to set an example.

JT: You enter the NCAA tournament on a 14-game winning streak. Do you feel like your team is playing it best basketball of the season right now?

KJ: Definitely. We have hit our stride at the right time. We had a hard schedule, but we are hot and feel ready to make a run.

JT: Coach Rick Byrd is one of a handful of active coaches with 600+ wins. What makes him such a great coach?

KJ: He is really good with Xs and Os and puts us in good positions to score. He is also good at scouting other teams and figuring out what they want to do.

JT: Your team is among the best in the country in scoring and three-point shooting. How important a weapon is the three-point shot to your team's success?

KJ: It is a really big part of our team, but we also rely on our big men and our post defense. Coach Byrd loves the three-point shot and we all have the green light when we are open. That is how we get our 20-point wins. When we are on, we are hard to beat.

JT: Your scoring, field goal and free throw percentages have all increased during each of your three years in college. How have you been able to continue to improve from year to year?

KJ: Just hard work and dedication in the summer to improving the parts of my game that I need to improve.

JT: What seed do you think you deserve, and what kind of team would you matchup against the best?

KJ: I think we have as good a team as last year's team that was a 13-seed, but we are more experienced this year. We deserve a 13, but are just happy to be in the tournament. We are not afraid to play anybody. We are fearless and can play with the best of the best.

Three Teams Punch Their Tickets to the Big Dance

The first three bids to the NCAA tournament were handed out on
Saturday, with the game drawing the greatest amount of attention being
the OVC title game between Murray State and Tennessee State. The
reason: this is the time of the year when bubble teams actively watch
the scoreboard in hopes that no unexpected competitors would show up on
the landscape. At 29-1 entering the title game it was clear that Steve
Prohm's team would be an "unexpected competitor" for an at-large bid and
the Racers were going to receive one had they lost to the Tigers.

However
Jewuan Long removed any doubt with a shot in the final seconds, giving
Murray State the 54-52 win and their second OVC tournament title in the
last three years. The Racers found a way to win a game that was played
at a slower pace than either of the two regular season meetings, and
it's not as if that was the only issue. Murray State was out-rebounded
by ten (34-24) and they shot just 37.5% from the field, making four of
eighteen shots from beyond the arc. In a game that finished with just 57
possessions (compared to 71 and 65 in the two regular season contests)
those problems normally are too much to overcome, but the Racers found a
way.

"[Tennessee State] had a great game plan and slowed it down
on the offensive end," remarked Murray State head coach Steve Prohm,
who won a conference title in his first season as head coach. "They made
us work for everything."

Isaiah Canaan and Donte Poole scored 14
points apiece to lead Murray State, who will be an interesting team to
watch on Selection Sunday from a seeding standpoint given the disparity
between their ranking in the polls and where they stand in the various
computer rankings. As for the Tigers, there's little solace in coming
close to winning a conference title and if anything it hurts even more
given the fact that they had a chance to take the lead on the possession
before Long's shot. But Tennessee State turned the ball over, and their
18th turnover of the day proved to be the costliest.

"We did a
good job defensively," said TSU head coach John Cooper. "Just down the
stretch we had about four possessions where we came up empty. We don't
score or we don't get anything down the stretch and that's hard to do as
a team and really try to finish a game out."

Finishing the game
out wasn't an issue for either UNC Asheville or Belmont, both of whom
won their respective conference titles and earned a return trip to the
Big Dance. UNC Asheville got out of the gates quickly against
VMI, scoring the first six points on the game before the Keydets made
their charge. The two teams were tied at 47 with just over 15 minutes
remaining and that's where the Bulldogs would make their run, outscoring
the Keydets 29-10 over the next eleven minutes to build a lead that
proved insurmountable.

And it was the Big South Player of the
Year, Matt Dickey, who was the catalyst despite not playing well in
either of Asheville's two games leading up to the final. Dickey scored
15 points and all five starters reached double figures, which proved
quite easy to do given their 24 assists on 29 made field goals. And once
again it was UNC Asheville who was able to force turnovers against VMI
as Duggar Baucom's team, which turned the ball over 17 times in both
regular season meetings, turned the ball over 20 times on Saturday. The
end result: an 80-64 defeat.

As for Belmont, Rick Byrd's
team got off to a slow start against a Florida Gulf Coast team making
its first-ever appearance in the A-Sun title game. The Bruins trailed by
as many as 12 points in the first half before closing to within four at
the half, but they kept after it. Belmont would ultimately win 80-64
thanks in large part to guard Kerron Johnson, who was named MVP after
putting up 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Blake Jenkins
scored 15 points and Scott Saunders 14 (and ten rebounds), and the
Bruins' edges in rebounding (44-30) and at the foul line (21-25 to 9-16
for the Eagles) proved to be too much for FGCU to overcome in the end.
Drew Hanlen's three with 18:11 remaining gave the Bruins a lead they
wouldn't relinquish, and while their record isn't as good as it was last
season Belmont will be a tough matchup for some higher seed.

Seeds
and matchups are all discussions for another day however, as the three
winners on Saturday are focused more on the accomplishment of a goal set
at the beginning of the season. Congrats to Belmont, Murray State and
UNC Asheville on earning their automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.

Five Notable Performances

1. G Jamaal Franklin (San Diego State)
35 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in the Aztecs' 98-92 overtime win at TCU.

2. G Will Barton (Memphis)
30 points (12-17 FG), nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Tigers' 78-66 win at Tulsa.

3. F Jae Crowder (Marquette)
26 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists in the Golden Eagles' 83-69 win over Georgetown.

4. F Drew Gordon (New Mexico State)
30 points and 12 rebounds in the Lobos' 76-61 win over Boise State.

5. G Pierre Jackson (Baylor)
35 points, five rebounds and three assists in the Bears' 80-72 loss at Iowa State.

VMI 267. Analysis: VMI’s high-powered offense is rolling, maybe

Murray State 31, Tennessee State 131. Analysis: Obviously, the
Tigers have the ability to beat Murray. Will they do it for the second
time this season? Probably not, but the Racers won’t beat them by 18
points again in Nashville. Line: Murray State -7. Pick:

Saturday's Conference Tournament Primer

Three tickets to the NCAA tournament will be punched on Saturday, beginning with the Big South title game matching seven-seed VMI and regular season champion UNC Asheville. Eddie Biedenbach's Bulldogs have avoided the turmoil on the opposite side of the bracket, which saw both Coastal Carolina and Campbell fall in the quarterfinals. Duggar Baucom's Keydets were the ones who knocked off CCU, as they shot an impressive 14-for-28 from three in their 85-68 win over the Chanticleers. VMI would follow that up with a 75-55 win over Winthrop on Thursday, limiting the Eagles to 32.8% shooting and forcing 15 turnovers.

A repeat of either of those performances will be tougher to come by against UNC Asheville, who relies on the Big South's best perimeter tandem on the offensive end of the floor. Matt Dickey and J.P. Primm average a combined 31.8 points and 7.6 assists per game on the season, and if one struggles the other is more than capable of picking up the slack. The Bulldogs aren't just a two-man attack however, as senior guard Chris Stephenson is scoring just over 13 points a game and forward Jeremy Atkinson adds 11.5 and 6.7 boards. VMI has Stan Okoye and Kenny Gabriel to rely on while Jordan Weethee has shot the ball well this week.

Both teams can clearly score, with UNC Asheville averaging 81 points per game and VMI 80, but the Bulldogs have been the more efficient team with their average of 1.1 4 points per possession. The two regular season meetings were both close, high-scoring affairs with the Bulldogs winning both by a combined 12 points.

VMI can force turnovers with the best of them and they pestered the Bulldogs into 18 of them in the second meeting. But the Keydets can't afford to turn the ball over themselves, something they did in both meetings (17 apiece). Take care of the basketball and VMI's got a shot to go dancing, but if they can't they'll be headed back to Lexington without the crown.

The OVC title game is the one most bubble teams will be tuned into (so long as they're not playing themselves), as Murray State is going to the Big Dance with or without an automatic bid. A Tennessee State win would make the OVC a two-bid league, and given the fact that the Tigers beat Murray State in their gym that's not exactly far-fetched.

Robert Covington is one of the toughest matchups in the OVC, and he put up 24 and 15 in the Tigers' 80-62 loss to Murray State on February 23rd. John Cooper's Tigers have been balanced offensively so it's not just a one-man show, and the same goes for the Isaiah Canaan-led Racers. Donte Poole accounted for 25 and seven rebounds in their win over Tennessee Tech, and Ivan Aska and Ed Daniel are two guys who thrive in physical games inside.

Last but not least there's the Atlantic Sun final which matches top-seed Belmont and six-seed Florida Gulf Goast, who are in their first season of full Division I membership. North Florida entered last season's title game in the same spot as the Eagles, but Belmont was having no part of a "storybook" finish for their opponent. Rick Byrd's Bruins haven't been as dominant as they were last season but they're still the class of the A-Sun with Kerron Johnson and big men Mick Hedgepeth and Scott Saunders leading the way.

FGCU has withstood two off performances from Brett Comer but they need him to be at his best if they're to dethrone the reigning champs. The good news for the Eagles is that big men Chase Fieler and Eddie Murray have played well this week, and another solid outing from them will give FGCU a chance.

Atlantic Sun - Title Game
#1 Belmont vs. #6 FGCU, 7:00 p.m. (ESPN2)

Big South - Title game
#7 VMI at #1 UNC Asheville, 12:00 p.m. (ESPN2)

Ohio Valley - Title Game
#1 Murray State vs. #2 Tennessee State, 2:00 p.m. (ESPN2)

America East - Quarterfinals (at University of Hartford)
#1 Stony Brook vs. #9 Binghamton, 12:05 p.m. (AE All-Access Live Video)
#4 Albany vs. #5 New Hampshire, *2:15 p.m. (AE All-Access Live Video)
#2 Vermont vs. #7 Maine, 6:05 p.m. (AE All-Access Live Video)
#3 Boston U. vs. #6 Hartford, *8:15 p.m. (AE All-Access Live Video)

Binghamton kicked things off in America East on Thursday night with a win over UMBC but the climb gets much steeper for Mark Macon's Bearcats as they take on regular season champ Stony Brook. The Seawolves scored just 67.4 points per game but they're one of the league's better defensive teams, limiting opponents to 59.1 points and 0.93 points per possession. If Robert Mansell and Ben Dickinson can shake free from the likes of league Defensive Player of the Year Tommy Brenton maybe Binghamton can hang around, but it doesn't look promising.

The 4/5 game should be interesting to watch due to the presence of Albany's Gerardo Suero, a junior guard who is one of the nation's best scorers and a guy some feel was robbed in the America East Player of the Year voting. UNH can counter with a solid guard of their own in Alvin Abreu, but slowing down Suero is a task that won't be done with ease. Also keep an eye on Albany's Logan Aronholt, who's been dealing with a knee injury that's forced him to sit for two games and play just nine minutes apiece in two others over the last four games.

Big Sky - Quarterfinals
#5 Idaho State at #4 Eastern Washington, 5:00 p.m.
#6 Montana State at #3 Portland State, 10:00 p.m.

The winners in the Big Sky will move on to play Montana and Weber State next week, and given how tight the race for those final tournament spots was these two contests shouldn't lack in the entertainment department. idaho State features one of the league's hottest scorers in Kenny McGowen, but the EWU trio of Cliff Colimon, Cliff Ederaine and Colin Chiverton will be tough to stop. Add in the fact that ISU is 4-12 on the road this season and it could be a tough day for the Bengals in Cheney.

As for Montana State, the Bobcats lost leading scorer Xavier Blount for the season due to injuries suffered in an altercation and it's been a struggle offensively ever since. They visit a Portland State team that hasn't had such issues thanks to Chehales Tapscott and Charles Odum, which means it could be a tough day on the road for Montana State.

Colonial - Quarterfinals
#1 Drexel vs. #9 UNCW, Noon (CAA-TV)
#4 Old Dominion vs. #5 Delaware, 2:30 p.m. (CAA-TV)
#2 VCU vs. #7 Northeastern, 6 p.m. (CAA-TV)
#3 George Mason vs. #6 Georgia State, 8:30 p.m. (CAA-TV)

The "big guns" in the CAA make their debut in this season's tournament, beginning with regular season champion Drexel taking on UNC Wilmington. The question surrounding the league this weekend is whether or not they can find a second NCAA tournament bid, with the Dragons, VCU and George Mason all owning impressive overall records (Drexel and VCU have won 25 games while George Mason has 23 wins). But the computer profiles are a bit lacking in the eyes of some, which could limit the CAA to just one bid come Selection Sunday.

CAA Player of the Year Ryan Pearson has the ability to put George Mason on his back and lead them to the title, but the same can be said for VCU's Bradford Burgess and Drexel's Frantz Massenat. Also keep an eye on four-seed ODU, led by senior Kent Bazemore. The Monarchs have a tough matchup to deal with in Delaware's Jamelle Hagins, but Blaine Taylor's squad has been solid defensively for much of the season.

Horizon League - Semifinals (at Valparaiso)
#3 Detroit vs. #2 Cleveland State, 6 p.m. (ESPN3)
#5 Butler at #1 Valparaiso, 8:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

The talk following Friday's quarterfinals was whether or not this was the beginning of another March run for Butler, but it would be wise to remember that Valparaiso is the regular season champion. The Crusaders won both regular season meetings: by six at Hinkle Fieldhouse on December 3rd and by 12 (71-59) in the regular season finale for both last Friday. The time off has also given forward Kevin Van Wijk more time to rest his knee, and that should help Bryce Drew's team along with playing at home. Horizon League Player of the Year Ryan Broekhoff was quiet in the second meeting but Van Wijk led the way with 18 and Will Bogan is a solid offensive piece as well.

Butler will need another solid night from Roosevelt Jones and Khyle Marshall along with Andrew Smith if they're to win at Valpo. The first semifinal matches Detroit, who looked very good offensively in their win over Youngstown State, and a Cleveland State team that's struggled since D'Aundray Brown went down. If Brown can go and be effective the Vikings can definitely win, but if he's limited or can't go they likely won't have enough weapons to keep up with the Titans.

Metro Atlantic - Quarterfinals
#4 Fairfield vs. #5 Rider, 2:00 p.m. (ESPN3)
#1 Iona vs. #8 Marist, 4:30 p.m. (ESPN3)
#2 Loyola (MD) vs. #7 Niagara, 7:30 p.m. (ESPN3)
#3 Manhattan vs. #6 Siena, 9:30 p.m. (ESPN3)

The first game of the day in the MAAC tournament is the most intriguing, as not only is the battle between Fairfield and Rider a contrast in styles but both teams have the ability to make a run this weekend. The Stags lost guard Derek Needham for the season due to a broken foot but they've got enough depth to navigate his loss, and in forward Rakim Sanders the Stags have one of the league's toughest covers. Tommy Dempsey's Broncs didn't play as well as expected during the regular season but with weapons such as Novar Gadson, Jeff Jones and Jonathon Thompson, Rider is more than capable of winning a shootout. But can they guard well enough to stick around Springfield for a few days? That's the big question.

Loyola has to be wary of Niagara given the scoring ability of freshmen Juan'ya Green and Antoine Mason, but the Greyhounds' depth and versatility could prove to be too much for the Purple Eagles. In the final game of the night Siena's chances hinge on the health of guard Evan Hymes due to their lack of depth, and Iona needs to take the floor with a killer instinct in their quarterfinal matchup with Marist.

Missouri Valley - Semifinals
#1 Wichita State vs. #4 Illinois State, 2:30 p.m. (MVC TV)
#2 Creighton vs. #3 Evansville, 5:00 p.m. (MVC TV)

The top four seeds meet in St. Louis and while many will expect the Shockers and Bluejays to advance don't sell the redbirds or Purple Aces short. Evansville took Creighton to overtime at home before some costly mistakes in the extra session cost them a win, lost by just three at Wichita State. But given the way Gregg Marshall's Shockers are playing of late it's going to be tough to slow them down given their many offensive options to go along with a solid defense. If Jackie Carmichael can control the paint in his battle with Garrett Stutz then ISU has a chance.

The second game could be a shootout given the offensive ability of both teams. Doug McDermott is a household name and he's got teammates more than capable of scoring as well, but Evansville has a combo in Colt Ryan and Denver Holmes who can get going offensively as well. If Marty Simmons' club can take care of the basketball and limit McDermott's paint touches they can win, but that's a big "if" at this point.

Southern - Quarterfinals
#1N UNCG vs. #5N Appalachian State, 12:00 p.m.
#2S Wofford vs. #3N Western Carolina, 2:30 p.m.
#1S Davidson vs. #5S Furman, 6:00 p.m.
#2N Elon vs. #3S Georgia Southern, 8:30 p.m.

The question is a simple one: which of the other seven teams left in the SoCon tournament can knock off Davidson, the overall regular season champion and prohibitive favorite to win the automatic bid? Jake Cohen and De'Mon Brooks have been outstanding all season long in the frontcourt and five Wildcats are averaging at least ten points per game. The best story may be UNCG, whose interim head coach (Wes Miller) was named league Coach of the Year due to his leading the Spartans to the North Division crown, and they've got a high-flying scorer in Trevis Simpson as well. Wofford's been to two NCAA tournaments under head coach Mike Young and they navigated the loss of a group of seniors led by Noah Dahlman to finish second in the South Division.

Summit - Quarterfinals
#1 Oral Roberts vs. #8 IPFW, 7:00 p.m. (FCS)
#2 South Dakota State vs. #7 IUPUI, 9:30 p.m. (FCS)

Summit League play opens tonight with the top two seeds tipping things off, and two of the country's best players whose names aren't tossed around on ESPN every night will be on display. ORU's Dominique Morrison has been an outstanding scorer this season, and South Dakota State point guard Nate Wolters is one of the country's most efficient players. Those two are expected to end up meeting in the title game, and even though the Jackrabbits did beat IUPUI by 11 in the regular season finale there was also the 97-93 thriller played between the two earlier this season. Alex Young is averaging 20.7 points per game to lead the Jaguars, who can salvage what's been a disappointing season with a run in Sioux Falls.

Sun Belt - First Round
#6 South Alabama vs. #11 Troy, 7:00 p.m. (Summit Arena)
#8 Florida Atlantic vs. #9 Arkansas State, 7:15 p.m. (Convention Center Court)
#7 Western Kentucky vs. #10 FIU, 9:30 p.m. (Summit Arena)

Seeds six through eleven open up play in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and it will be interesting to see if any of these teams can cause some chaos within the bracket. South Alabama may be the best choice due to the Jaguars being the lone team without a losing conference record (8-8), and after that it's anyone's guess. WKU is a very young team but they're talented as well with freshman Derrick Gordon leading the way. Three teams will keep their seasons alive but it's difficult to see any of them getting to the semifinals much less the title game.

WCC - Semifinals
#1 Saint Mary's vs. #5 San Francisco, 9:00 p.m. (ESPNU)
#2 Gonzaga vs. #3 BYU, 11:00 p.m. (ESPNU)

The three teams many expect to get to the NCAA tournament out of the WCC will be on display, but San Francisco has the ability to surprise Saint Mary's and reach the final. The Dons lost a close one to the Gaels in the regular season finale, and the celebration of their first outight WCC title in more than 20 years did go over too well with U.S.F. wing Rashad Green (he reportedly banged on the SMC locker room door and "asked" them to keep the noise down). Cody Doolin and Michael Williams are playing well and Angelo Caloiaro is one of the WCC's most versatile players, so don't be surprised if San Francisco can push Matthew Dellavedova, Rob Jones and company to the brink.

In the nightcap one would think that a BYU win over Gonzaga, which would give them two this season, would truly punch the Cougars' ticket to the Big Dance if it hasn't been already. Noah Hartsock looked good despite being bugged by a knee injury at the end of the regular season on Friday night, scoring 19 points in the Cougars' win over San Diego. But Matt Carlino can't turn the ball over nine times as he did against the Toreros if they're to knock off Gonzaga, who needs consistent play from Elias Harris and Robert Sacre inside.

BYU Avoids a Crippling Defeat: Friday's Quick Hitters

1. BYU survived a pesky San Diego squad to advance to the WCC semifinals.
A win over San Diego wasn't going to do a whole lot for BYU from a resume standpoint. Sure the Cougars would pick up a 25th win on the season, but a loss would have had a much larger impact on their NCAA tournament hopes than a win. That's what made the return of Noah Hartsock so important, given how much the Cougars struggled with the pesky Toreros.

Hartsock, who played just seven minutes at Gonzaga and sat out the Portland game with a knee injury, returned to give BYU 19 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes of action as the Cougars beat San Diego 73-68 in a WCC quarterfinal. The win moves BYU to 25-7 and sets up a third meeting with Gonzaga, but most importantly the Cougars avoid a damaging loss and likely avoid any of the selection committee hijinks that could have sprung up with a loss.

"I knew my knee wouldn't be 100 percent, but the trainers did a great job of helping me rehab and get stronger," said Hartsock. "I was able to come out tonight and really produce. It started to feel, as the game went on, that the adrenaline and blood started pumping."

San Diego's small, quick guards gave the Cougars fits for much of the night, especially point guard Matt Carlino. Carlino, who knocked down two important three-pointers in the second half, had his hands full with Christopher Anderson all night long. Carlino finished with eight points and seven assist but he also turned the ball over nine times. Anderson finished with 14 points and six assists while Dennis Kramer led the Toreros with 17 points and nine rebounds, but unfortunately for them Johnny Dee made just three of his eleven shots after scoring 30 on Thursday night.

BYU gets another shot at Gonzaga, who beat the Cougars by eleven last Thursday, and having a relatively healthy Hartsock is a dimension they were missing in Spokane. The senior went off for 24 points and 14 rebounds in BYU's 83-73 win over Gonzaga in Provo, and there's no doubt that his presence alongside Brandon Davies (16 points, five rebounds against USD) is a key factor in BYU's success. BYU isn't a "bubble" team but a loss to the Toreros could have added some doubt to the situation. Thanks to Hartsock that won't be an issue.

2. The top two seeds advance in the OVC while FGCU upsets host Mercer in the A-Sun semis.
The semifinals of the OVC tournament went according to form on Friday night as the top two seeds, Murray State and Tennessee State, advanced to Saturday's title game. Kevin Murphy scored 31 points to lead Tennessee Tech but with Jud Dillard (3-9 FG, eight points) struggling offensively the Golden Eagles were unable to keep up with the Racers, who went on to win

78-58. Donte Poole scored 25 points and grabbed seven boards and Isaiah Canaan added 18 to set up a rubber match with Tennessee State, who beat Morehead State 59-52. Robert Covington scored 14 points for the Tigers, who also received 13 points apiece from Patrick Miller and reserve Jordan Cyphers. The road team won both regular season meetings between the Racers and Tigers, which should make for an interesting tiebreaker in Nashville.

As for the Atlantic Sun semifinals, for the second straight season a team in its first year of eligibility for an NCAA bid advanced to the title game. Sherwood Brown scored 14 points and Christophe Varidel added 13 off the bench to help lead Florida Gulf Coast past two-seed (and host) Mercer 62-58 in the second semifinal of the night. Jakob Gollon scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Langston Hall added 16 to lead the Bears but they went cold at the wrong time, failing to score a field goal over the final 6:18 of the game.

The opponent for the Eagles in Saturday's title game will be top-seed Belmont, who blew out upstart North Florida in last season's title game. The Bruins beat ETSU 69-61 thanks in part to 19 points, four rebounds and four assists from Ian Clark, who made five of their twelve three-pointers. The 24-point disparity in points from beyond the arc made up for Belmont's poor free throw shooting, as they finished the night 13-for-25 from the charity stripe.

3. Butler dominates the second half to advance to the Horizon League semifinals.
Regardless of what happens in the regular season games that lead into March, Brad Stevens' Bulldogs have been a very tough team to beat in the month of March. Khyle Marshall and Roosevelt Jones scored 17 points apiece (Marshall also grabbed ten rebounds) to help lead Butler past Milwaukee 71-49 to set up a semifinal meeting with top-seed Valparaiso on Saturday.

Beginning with a Marshall dunk with 48 seconds remaining in the first half Butler went on an 11-0 run to push their lead out to 31-18, and another Marshall bucket (with 7:15 remaining) started a 25-5 run that put the Panthers away. Butler was efficient offensively as they shot 50% from the field but they were even better on the other end of the floor. Milwaukee shot just 31% from the field, which included a cold 6-for-23 night from three, and Butler out-rebounded the Panthers 42-23.

Also advancing to the semifinals was Detroit, who shot 60% from the field and had five players score 11 points or more in their 93-76 win over Youngstown State. Ray McCallum Jr. scored 22 points to lead the Titans, who will take on two-seed Cleveland State in the other semifinal on Saturday. Youngstown State did manage to shoot 55% from the field but there were just 6-for-20 from three, and for a team that relies so much on the shot that didn't bode well for the Penguins.

Quick Hitters

1. The higher seeded teams held serve for the second straight day at Arch Madness, which featured Wichita State's dominant performance against Indiana State. The Sycamores weren't helped by the fact that point guard Jake Odum was dealing with plantar fasciitis and a stress fracture in his foot, but to be honest that didn't have much of an impact in the Shockers' 72-48 win. Toure' Murry and Joe Ragland led a balanced attack with 14 points apiece, and the Shockers will take on four-seed Illinois State on Saturday.

2. In the night session Creighton made the plays they needed to make late in order to survive Drake, beating the Bulldogs 68-61. Doug McDermott, who won the Larry Bird Trophy as MVC Player of the Year, scored 26 points and grabbed ten rebounds to lead the Bluejays, who also received valuable contributions from Antoine Young (16 points) and Gregory Echenique (ten points, five rebounds). Next up for Creighton is three-seed Evansville, who received 20 points and eight rebounds from Kenneth Harris to go along with 19 from Colt Ryan.

3. BYU may have avoided a loss to a lower seeded team in Las Vegas but the same can't be said for Loyola Marymount, who dropped a 67-60 decision to San Francisco. The game changed for LMU when point guard Anthony Ireland injured his groin on a collision with the basket support in the second half, but to be fair the Lions were having trouble guarding the Dons for much of the night. Michael Williams scored 19 points and Cody Doolin 16 to lead San Francisco, who gets another shot at regular season champ Saint Mary's in Saturday's semifinals.

4. It was a good day for the five seeds in the Southern Conference tournament as both Appalachian State and Furman advanced to the quarterfinals. The Mountaineers shot 53% from both the field and from three in their 93-81 win over College of Charleston, with Mike Neal leading five starters in double figures with 21 points. As for the Paladins, Bobby Austin and Charlie Reddick scored 15 points apiece to lead them to a 75-66 win over Samford.

5. Three of the four games at the CAA tournament in Richmond went according to form, with the lone exception being UNC Wilmington's 70-59 win over James Madison in the 8/9 game. The Seahawks, who were led by Cedrick Williams' 22 points and eight rebounds, shot just 39.6% from the field but unlike the Dukes (13-23 FT) Buzz Peterson's team took advantage of the foul line (26-32).

6. #19 Notre Dame attempted just ten three-pointers in their 75-69 win over Providence to lock up a double-bye in next week's Big East Championship, and Jack Cooley's play was a big reason why. Cooley scored 27 points and grabbed 17 boards for the Irish, who attempted fifteen more free throws (26-11) than the Friars while also having five players reach double figures.

7. Kyle Casey scored 19 points to lead Harvard past Columbia 77-70 in overtime on Friday night, keeping the Crimson a half-game ahead of Penn in the Ivy League race. Harvard closes their regular season with a game at Cornell on Saturday night while the Quakers, who beat Brown 54-43 on Friday, closes out with games against Yale and rival Princeton. Should the two teams finish tied atop the standings there will be a one-game playoff.

8. One day after their season ended with a loss to Indiana State in the first round of the MVC tournament Southern Illinois decided to fire head coach Chris Lowery. Lowery, who led the Salukis to three NCAA appearances in his eight seasons in Carbondale, struggled the last couple of years culminating in an 8-23 mark this season. Some have already suggested that SIU may be interested in talking to Bruce Weber, who was the head coach at SIU before moving on to Illinois.

9. No surprises in the first round of the MAAC tournament on Friday night as Marist and Niagara advanced to the quarterfinals with two of the conference's best freshmen playing well. Chavaughn Lewis led the Red Foxes to a 64-57 win over Saint Peter's with 17 points and seven rebounds, and MAAC Rookie of the Year Juan'ya Green scored a team-high 20 in the Purple Eagles' 80-70 win over rival Canisius.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Jack Cooley (Notre Dame)
27 points and 17 rebounds in the Fighting Irish's 75-69 win over Providence.

2. G Eric Ferguson (Georgia Southern)
26 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the Eagles' 76-70 win over Chattanooga.

3. G Donte Poole (Murray State)
25 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the Racers' 78-58 win over Tennessee Tech.

East Tennessee State 180. Analysis: Belmont beat the Buccaneers
by a combined 34 points in two meetings this year. Can’t find a reason
why the Bruins won’t blow them out again.

over Lipscomb, but the Bears probably aren’t playing well enough yet to
        take them against the spread.

Afternoon Upsets in the Big South: Wednesday's Quick Hitters

The biggest development on Wednesday night were the wins picked up by Cincinnati, Colorado State and USF, as all three strengthened their arguments for an NCAA tournament bid.

1. Two of the top three seeds in the Big South saw their seasons come to an end in the quarterfinals.
The beginning of an almost nonstop afternoon basketball got underway on Wednesday, and from an upset standpoint the Big South certainly didn't disappoint. But if you're a fan of either Coastal Carolina or Campbell it wasn't a good day, as both saw their seasons come to an end (unless selected for a postseason tournament) despite entering the conference tournament as the two and three seeds. CCU ran into a VMI team that got hot from three, knocking down 14 of their 28 attempts from beyond the arc on the way to an 85-68 victory. Starters Keith Gabriel (20 points) and Stan Okoye (15) played well, but the 17-point outing from Jordan Weethee (5-6 3PT) off the bench was just as important. CCU didn't help themselves by turning the ball over 16 times either.

As for Campbell turnovers were a problem for them as well in their 71-55 loss to six-seeded Winthrop. The Camels turned the ball over 16 times to just eight for the Eagles, who are looking to rid themselves of the bad taste left in their mouths following a disappointing regular season. Campbell also couldn't slow down Reggie Middleton, who scored a game-high 25 points (5-10 3PT) and dished out four assists to lead the way for Winthrop. Darren White led Campbell with 15 points but no other Campbell player reached double figures, and when combined with the turnovers that proved to be too much to overcome. On the other side of the bracket top seed UNC Asheville and four-seed Charleston Southern advanced, and the key for UNCA at this point is to remain focused on the task at hand instead of worrying about how the bottom half of the bracket opened up. Do that and Eddie Biedenbach's team could make a return trip to the Big Dance.

2. Miami follows up their big win over Florida State with...a loss at NC State.
What the Hurricanes have done over the last four days is exactly why concrete verdicts shouldn't be rendered in regards to the tournament prospects of teams based on one game. On Sunday Jim Larranaga's team looked very good as they beat Florida State with Reggie Johnson out of the lineup. But with Johnson back the Hurricanes were unable to build on the positive momentum as they fell to the Wolfpack 77-73. And if not for their 22 offensive rebounds the margin of defeat could have been even larger for Miami, who shot just 35.6% from the field while NC State made half of their field goal attempts.

C.J. Leslie led four NC State players in double figures with 21 points while also grabbing 11 boards as the Pack snapped their four-game losing streak. Rion Brown led the Hurricanes with 15 points off the bench but with Kenny Kadji and Durand Scott shooting a combined 6-for-24 from the field Miami couldn't counter NC State scoring 43 second-half points. With a home game against Boston College being the regular season finale, it's likely that Miami will need to make some noise in the ACC tournament to further state their case.

3. It was also a bad night for bubble teams in the Atlantic 10 as both Dayton and Saint Joseph's fell.
One day after Xavier fell hard at Saint Louis two more teams suffered defeats that could have the A-10 sliding toward being a two-bid league. Phil Martelli's Hawks were unable to build on their win over Temple in Olean as they fell to St. Bonaventure 98-93 in double overtime. Andrew Nicholson, who is a candidate for A-10 Player of the Year, scored 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Bonnies to a win that locked up a first-round bye in next week's conference tournament. The Hawks got themselves in trouble by getting out-rebounded 49-30, with the Bonnies grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.

As for the Flyers, their loss was even more damaging as they fell 82-71 at Richmond. Darien Brothers led the Spiders with 30 points and Kendall Anthony added 20 off the bench as Richmond dropped Dayton into a three-way tie for sixth. Chris Johnson scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Dayton, who was outscored 19-9 at the charity stripe. Richmond held the edge in bench points (29-15) thanks in large part to Anthony, and they were also able to score 21 second-chance points to just 13 for the Flyers. A win over George Washington won't do much for Dayton's profile and Saint Joseph's regular season is done, meaning that both are looking at the prospect of likely needing the automatic bid to go dancing.

Quick Hitters

1. The top two seeds took the floor in the Atlantic Sun quarters, and while Mercer had to work a bit harder than anticipated both the Bears and Belmont advanced. Jake Gollon led Mercer to their 61-53 win over Lipscomb with 19 points and eight rebounds, and as a team the Bears made up for committing twice as many turnovers (16) as Lipscomb by making nine three-pointers. Belmont beat Jacksonville 76-62 behind Kerron Johnson's 19 points, five rebounds and five assists.

2. Three of the four quarterfinals in the Patriot League went according to seed on Wednesday. The lone exception: Lafayette's 84-76 win at Holy Cross in the 4/5 game. Rob Delaney (25 points) and Jim Mower (18) combined to score 43 points for the Leopards, who will visit top-seed Bucknell in the semifinals on Saturday.

3. Mitchell Watt scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to Buffalo to a 74-70 win at Akron in a key MAC battle. The win moves the Bulls to within a game of the Zips for first place in the MAC East with one game remaining, and just as importantly they're a game up on Ohio in the race for second place.

4. Sheldon McClellan scored 24 points and J'Covan Brown 22 as Texas avoided what would have been a rough loss to have on their resume, as they beat Oklahoma 72-64 in Austin. The Longhorns end the regular season with a trip to Kansas, and an upset in Lawrence would undoubtedly punch their ticket.

5. Brian Williams scored all 18 of his points in the second half, and his three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining gave Jacksonville State the lead for good in their 75-70 win over Austin Peay in an OVC first round matchup. In the other OVC tournament game Southeast Missouri State beat Eastern Kentucky 75-65.

6. A rough run through WCC play mercifully came to an end for Santa Clara in Las Vegas as they fell 74-70 to Portland in the first round of the WCC tournament. Losing Marc Trasolini on the preseason trip to Canada with a torn ACL was hard enough to deal with, but once Kerry Keating had to suspend Kevin Foster the Broncos seemed destined for a winless league campaign.

7. Northwestern had a golden opportunity to pick up a signature win, but Jared Sullinger's bucket in the final seconds gave Ohio State the 75-73 win in Evanston. Drew Crawford and John Shurna combined to lead the Wildcats with 45 points but that wasn't enough as the Buckeyes had four players put up double figures. The Northwestern storyline is going to be one of the interesting stories to keep an eye on in Indianapolis next week.
