NBA: Dwight Howard: The Best.. Ever?

By:

Bill Ingram

Last week Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, commonly known as Superman after he wowed the
All-Star crowd in New Orleans with his high-flying slam dunk routine,
recorded his first career triple-double. Playing against the front
court challenged Oklahoma City Thunder, Howard thundered down 30
points, 19 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a 109-92 Magic win.

After the game Thunder head coach PJ Carlesimo couldn't help
himself. The man who was an assistant under Gregg Popovich watching Tim
Duncan win championships called Howard the best big man in the NBA, one of the best players on the planet, and even suggested that he might be the best big man ever.

"That's high praise, but he certainly has the ability to be one of
the best ever," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy told HOOPSWORLD. "That's a
goal that he's working toward and we've told him since we walked in on
day one that the standard we want to hold him to is to be the best
player in the league. That's obviously a very high standard and we can
always find things wrong to make him get better, but Dwight's attitude,
particularly this year, has been that he wants to get better and wants
to reach that level and wants to be pushed on the things that he's not
doing well. He's off to a great start. I'm sure there will be
challenges ahead, people will play him a lot of different ways, but
he's maturing and he has more poise this season."

"I guess you could say he's actually Superman out there," adds
Rashard Lewis, who grew up in Houston idolizing Hakeem Olajuwon. "He
gave a tremendous effort out on the defensive end that game. He was
crawling up the paint getting blocks. I think he had seventy or eighty
percent of the blocked shots before half time. Obviously, rebounding
the ball well and scoring with the ball well, there was nothing out
there that he didn't do. He literally carried us to that win. That's
why we had such a big lead early; they just couldn't get any points in
the paint. They aren't a very good jump shooting team and they couldn't
get a layup because Dwight was there to contest their shot."

"He's one of those guys who just wants to be the best," says Magic
set-up man Jameer Nelson. "It's one thing to say you want to be the
best and something else to actually try to be the best. He's trying to
be the best. He's working at it and continuing to get better every year
and every game so he can put his team in a position to win the
championship."

As much as Dwight's big game
against the Thunder inspires awe and wonder, it's not the Dwight Howard
we see night in and night out. He may be dominant on some nights, but
until he learns to dominate every night he can't truly join the elite
names like Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Wilt Chamberlain on the
all-time list. There are still some areas where "Superman" needs to
improve, though Van Gundy likes the fact that he is now becoming immune
to the most lethal form of Kryptonite: turnovers.

"He's basically been a guy who, over the course of his career, has
basically turned the ball over every ten or eleven minutes," says Van
Gundy. 'As he gets better in that area, obviously, it makes us a more
efficient team. It makes it easier for us to go to him throughout the
game and he can get more done."

Howard is averaging a career-low 2.4 turnovers per contest, and in
nine games in November he's had more than two only once. Hedo Turkoglu
also has first-hand knowledge of Tim Duncan, and points out another
area where Howard has to improve.

"He's going to be one of the best ever, but he has to work on the
things that will really push him to the next level. He's still young,
and all he wants to do is just dunk every ball he gets. That's his
aggressiveness, his adrenalin, but when you look at how other big men
became great players, they all have in-between games. When he starts
making those 15', 17' jumpers off the glass then he's going to be
unstoppable. Even now he's putting up some monster numbers, so all he
has to do is work on his stuff and I think he's going to be like PJ
said."

With a few tweaks, though, Lewis feels like his post man has a chance to have a very special and Hall of Fame worthy career.

"He has a chance to be one of the best big men of all time.
Obviously, to me, he is the best center in the NBA right now. He's
going to be on the top five list once his career is over. He is going
to be a Hall of Famer and he is going to win a couple of championships.
I think he does have a chance to be one of the best big men if not the
best big man. He has a lot of work to do to catch Hakeem and a lot of
other guys but at the same he has a tremendous amount of talent and he
is so athletic. He can move his feet and can move his left and right
hand and has a number of things he can do. He's still pretty young,
developing his game, and has a long way to go in this league."

As for Dwight himself, he's never one to take things too seriously.
He appreciates the attention, but at the end of the day he's going out
and having fun.

"Thank God I finally got a triple-double," says Howard. "One of the
toughest things to do in the league is to get a triple-double and it
was amazing. I had a lot of fun! . . . It's an honor for (PJ) to say
that. I had the opportunity to be coached by him in the All-Star game,
so: Thanks, PJ, you're the best!"

Dwight Howard is already the best center in the NBA, and with a
little more hard work he just might become the player PJ Carlesimo
predicts he will be.

NBA: All-Bust Team

By:

Jason Fleming

No person ever wants to be called a bust. It's a
term most often used to refer to high draft picks who never fulfill
expectations, but could just as easily be the guy in the cube next to
you who everyone had high hopes for but instead spends his days
weighing the options of his fantasy football team. Or his fantasy
racing team. Or bass fishing. Or – well, you get the picture.

Even athletes who end up being called busts
can't shoulder all the blame, though they usually do. Is it their fault
a general manager somewhere thought they were better than they were?
Are they guilty of fraud for convincing someone to spend x amount of
dollars on their services, then producing only y results?

In the NBA
first round picks are locked into two-year contracts at a minimum, with
team options for the third and fourth year. If you recall this is a
change – it used to be three years guaranteed with one team option –
but in the last round of negotiations teams wanted more flexibility to
get out from under bad draft choices. As we all know, that hasn't
stopped the poor selections.

Unfortunately, there are no mulligans in the
draft, so here is a short list of players around the league on rookie
scale contracts who might qualify for the dreaded label as bust.

Adam Morrison, Charlotte Bobcats

Morrison was drafted third overall by Michael
Jordan and the Bobcats, but he wasn't nearly the player – so far –
anyone expected him to be. Known as a jump shooter, his percentages
were horrible (34% from three-point range, 38% overall) as a rookie and
he couldn't guard a chair. Then he missed last season with a knee
injury. Morrison needs to prove, this season, he deserves to stay in
this league. If his performance is anything less than excellent, the
Cats are going to be dishing him to anyone still interested.

Sergio Rodriguez, Portland Trail Blazers

Rodriguez definitely has a following, but
Portland coach Nate McMillan doesn't seem to be among them. His
penchant for making turnovers because he is out of control as well as
his lack of defense are the biggest reasons – and as an NBA point guard
you better be able to do one of those things well in addition to making
passes and hitting jumpers. Rodriguez excites the crowd, but that's
enough when on the next play he'll throw the ball to those same fans
who cheered a fancy pass a minute earlier. In fact, Rodriguez is so in
the doghouse his playing time dipped from 12.9 minutes per game as a
rookie to 8.7 as a sophomore – and then Portland drafted guard Jerryd
Bayless.

J.J. Redick, Orlando Magic

Redick is not happy in Orlando and Orlando is
not happy with Redick. He can shoot to be sure, but a player needs to
have more than one skill to be a player in this league, especially one
drafted in the lottery. Shooters will always have a home in the NBA,
but Redick won't find his until he is either traded to a team
specifically wanting a shooter or the Magic waive him. Unfortunately
for both sides he was drafted to be a starting shooting guard, and his
lack of defense makes it almost impossible to justify playing time – he
gives up as many or more than he would score. Look for Redick to
resurface outside of Orlando sometime – a la Jason Kapono.

Johan Petro and Saer Sene, Oklahoma City

This franchise has been looking for second
coming of Shawn Kemp for awhile now, but this is all they have to show
for it. Combined these two first round picks – both big men who are not
nearly strong enough to play the NBA post – put up these stats: 23.0
minutes, 28 starts, 85 games, 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.12
blocks. Hey, that blocks number is decent in 23.0 minutes. Combine
these two with restricted free agent center Robert Swift – he of the 71
games played over four seasons – and that's quit the poor choice of big
men in Seattle.

Sean May, Charlotte Bobcats

Like Morrison and Swift, May has been hurt. A
lot. In three seasons May has played in only 58 games, including
missing all of 2007-08 (this is another reason why it's so hard to
gauge the 2008-09 Bobcats – no one has any idea what they will have on
the floor), but has produced when healthy. 10.4 and 5.9 rebounds, with
multiple double-doubles, is solid production in 21.3 minutes of floor
time, but it's not enough for a lottery pick. Calling him a bust is
harsh since he has been productive when not nursing one injury or
another, but 58 games is 58 games.

Ike Diogu, Portland Trail Blazers

Maybe he's just cheap, but a lottery pick who
has been traded twice in three seasons isn't someone their team thinks
highly of enough to keep around. Maybe it's just bad luck. Maybe it's
just that Diogu's contract has fit in nicely in two moves Golden State
and Indiana had to make for the betterment of their franchises, but
players drafted at the nine spot should be more valuable; Diogu hasn't
proved much value. Over 158 games in three seasons he has earned
himself 13.3 minutes a game and posted averages of 6.5 points and 3.3
rebounds. Apparently those critics of him before the 2005 NBA Draft who called him too undersized to play power forward at 6-8 may have been right.

Shelden Williams, Sacramento Kings

It all started so well for Williams in Atlanta.
Drafted fifth overall in 2006 he even earned rookie awards early on,
but his production trailed off the longer the season went on. Then the
Hawks drafted Al Horford and Marvin Williams got healthy, and suddenly
Williams wasn't even in the rotation. When they needed a few extra
bucks to make the Mike Bibby acquisition happen, adding in Williams was
a no-brainer. He actually played even less in Sacramento, a team with
overpaid veterans who can't stay in the rotation or healthy, like Kenny
Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. And then the Kings used their 2008
lottery pick on power forward Jason Thompson. Doesn't really seem like
the Kings are that thrilled with what they saw in 28 games from
Williams, does it?

Honorable mention goes to this
following list of players their own team didn't wait around the full
four years on: Yaroslav Korolev (L.A. Clippers), Gerald Green (Boston,
then Minnesota), Julius Hodge (Denver, then Milwaukee), Wayne Simien
(Miami, then Minnesota), Patrick O'Bryant (Golden State), and Shannon
Brown (Cleveland, then Chicago).

That's just a short list – no doubt you, dear
reader, have your own names to add to this list. Who would it be?
Again, keep it to players on rookie contracts, which would be anyone
drafted in 2005, 2006, or 2007. And no, no one from 2008 is eligible to
be called a bust – wait until next summer to do that. Leave a comment…

Summer League Player Grades: Picks 21-30

By:

Preetom Bhattacharya

NBA GMs are judged for their ability to evaluate
talent and the best of them are able to find prospects that have been
overlooked by other teams. Whether it be finding a contributor in the
tail end of the first round or taking a project in the second,
executives in the NBA have plenty of reasons to sit through the
grueling two rounds. The main one? Those players may be integral pieces
in a championship puzzle.

After grading the top and middle 10 picks, HOOPSWORLD rates the last third of the first round:

21. Ryan Anderson – New Jersey Nets (via trade from Dallas)
Noteworthy Performance: 18 points, seven rebounds against the Miami HEAT
Grade: B-
Review: The biggest question mark for Ryan Anderson was whether he was
physical enough to play the power forward position in the NBA or if he
was going to be an oversized 3 – he didn't quite answer that.
Anderson's perimeter game was already known to be very solid, as he has
range to the three-point and his ball-handling and quickness are good
enough to get to the basket. Although he showed a willingness to play
in the paint, Anderson's next step is to continue to develop as a
"big". He's on the right track.

22. Courtney Lee – Orlando Magic
Noteworthy Performance: 27 points (8-14 FG), 4 assists, 3-3 from 3P, 8-9 FT against Oklahoma City
Grade: B+
Review: Courtney Lee did exactly what the Magic had
hoped they would see from him – score. In addition to his notable
statline above, Lee had a 30-point outburst to finish the Summer
League. The variety in which he was getting those points is what will
really makes the Magic happy – he knocked down threes, nailed the
mid-range, and even penetrated to get to the basket and foul line as
well. That kind of diversity will be nice for an Orlando team that was
far too heavily reliant on the three-pointer at times.

23. Kosta Koufos – Utah Jazz
Noteworthy Performance: 12 points, 10 rebounds against the Atlanta Hawks
Grade: INC
Review: Kosta Koufos has shown that he's able to shoot
the NBA three-pointer and he'll be able to develop nicely behind Mehmet
Okur, but his performances in Salt Lake City's Rocky Mountain Revue
have been too inconsistent so far. After a rough debut, in which it
seemed like Koufos could only net fouls, he recovered nicely with the
double-double noted above and then had a mediocre showing in Game 3.
With a few more games left to go, Koufos can still earn himself a nice
grade with solid performances.

24. Serge Ibaka – Oklahoma City (via trade from Phoenix)
Noteworthy Performance: N/A
Grade: N/A
Review: OKC decided to keep Ibaka in Spain for a few years as he continues to develop.

25. Nicolas Batum – Portland Trail Blazers (via trade from Houston)
Noteworthy Performance: 12 points, five rebounds against the Minnesota Timberwolves
Grade: C
Review: The Trail Blazers believe that Nicolas Batum will become a very
solid defender in the future because of his length and athleticism. In
Vegas, though, Batum was overwhelmed by the speed and physicality of
many of his opponents. Although he improved and adjusted as each game
passed, he didn't show much aggressiveness on offense and must develop
a consistent jumpshot. He's only 19-years old, so he has time, but the
Blazers' patience will certainly be tested, as it was with Travis
Outlaw.

26. George Hill – San Antonio Spurs
Noteworthy Performance: 21 points, three assists, four rebounds against the Utah Jazz
Grade: C+
Review: The Spurs have said that George Hill has an
opportunity to be the team's primary backup to Tony Parker and he has
certainly shown talent so far but has been inconsistent. His shot
wasn't falling for him in Las Vegas, but his performances have gotten
better since coming to Salt Lake City. The nice part for the Spurs is
that even if Hill is inconsistent, the team can turn to the steady
veteran hand of Jacque Vaughn.

27. Darrell Arthur – Memphis Grizzlies (via trade from New Orleans and Portland)
Noteworthy Performance: 23 points (10-15 FG), six rebounds, one block against the San Antonio Spurs
Grade: B
Review: Everyone knew that Darrell Arthur had talent,
but too many teams foolishly passed up on him over a rumor that his
kidney isn't 100%. Arthur certainly has a chip on his shoulder and came
out with something to prove in Vegas with a stellar debut. He's been
resilient as well – in Games 2 and 3, he struggled to hit his shots,
but he's clearly confident in his abilities and wasn't fazed. Arthur's
mobility gets him up and down the court and his ability to score in a
variety of ways (jumpers and post moves) will almost certainly make him
a bench contributor for Memphis this season.

28. Donte Greene – Houston Rockets (via trade from Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis)
Noteworthy Performance: 40 points (12-20 FG, 5-10 3P), three assists, three rebounds against the Phoenix Suns
Grade: A
Review: Donte Greene can flat-out shoot the ball,
which is certainly something Rockets' head coach Rick Adelman is
excited about. Greene needs to diversify his offensive game, becoming
more than just a jumpshooter, but he's athletic enough and showed in
college that he has a lot of variety of ways to score. He'll need to
develop as a defender, but was a flat-out dominant scorer in Las Vegas.

29. D.J. White – Oklahoma City (via trade from Detroit)
Noteworthy Performance: 20 points, 7 rebounds, 9-15 from the field against the Chicago Bulls
Grade: C
Review: White started in all of OKC's games, averaging
a nice 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He showed that he was
able to leave the paint and knock down some midrange jumpers and that
he could bang around inside and grab a few rebounds. Because White is a
smart player, he'll adjust as needed and should continue to grow in his
productivity.

30. J.R. Giddens – Boston Celtics
Noteworthy Performance: N/A
Grade: N/A
Review: The Champs didn't get involved in any of the summer leagues and Giddens has yet to sign a contract.

Orlando Magic: NBA Draft Team Needs

2007-08 Record: 52-30; 1st Southeast

Draft Picks: 22

Key Free Agents

G Carlos Arroyo

G Keyon Dooling

G/F Keith Bogans (player option)

How they got here and what they need

The season began in unfortunate fashion, with Billy Donovan first accepting the job opening then deciding that his heart was still in Gainesville. In came Stan Van Gundy and people didn't know what to expect from Orlando this season. And the Magic were able to make sure they had a shot at getting out of the first round, winning the Southeast Division thanks to the trio of Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu. But once again the playoff savvy Pistons proved to be too much, but Stan Van Gundy has this team headed in the right direction.

In terms of where to look to improve this team, they need to bolster their bench some, with a little more emphasis on the wing. If they can find a guy with versatility on the offensive end and a willingness to defend off the bench, look for that guy to end up in Orlando.

Who they take

Despite the inconsistencies that litter his game (he's still young- 19 years old), France's Nicolas Batum may be the kind of player the Magic are looking for on the wing. Given the amount of talent they have returning next season, they can afford to give him time to develop as a player and put on a little more weight.

2006 NBA Draft Statistical Projection Recap

Every season, I project the future statistics of top NBA prospects. Before I get to this season's first projections for the 2007 prospects, I wanted to take a look back at 2006. Overall, I projected very meek stats for last year's class, and my lack of confidence turned out to be right. There just wasn't too much excitement. Luckily on the most part, my projections were pretty solid.

Last year's stats.
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/Draft/2006stats.htm

Sergio Rodriguez - 4,2,2 vs 4,1,3
Rajon Rondo - 5,3,2 vs 6,4,4
Brandon Roy - 12,5,2 vs 17,4,4
Mouhamed Saer Sene - 3,3,1 vs 2,2,0
Thabo Sefolosha - 5,2,1 vs 4,2,1
Cedric Simmons - 7,4,1 vs 3,3,0
Shawne Williams - 7,3,2 vs 4,2,1
Shelden Williams - 9,6,1 vs 6,5,1

All Stats Correct: Jordan Farmar (4,2,2 vs 4,2,2), Kyle Lowry (6,3,3 vs 6,3,3), David Noel (3,2,1 vs 3,2,1)
2 of 3 Stats Correct: Renaldo Balkman (5,3,1 vs 5,4,1 actual), Josh Boone (4,3,1 vs 4,3,0), Mardy Collins (4,2,2 vs 5,2,2), Thabo Sefolosha (5,2,1 vs 4,2,1), Marcus Williams (7,3,3 vs 7,2,3)
All Stats Within 1 Besides Above: Rodney Carney (8,3,2 vs 7,2,1), Randy Foye (9,4,4 vs 10,3,3), Bobby Jones, Solomon Jones, Adam Morrison (13,4,2 vs 12,3,2), Sergio Rodriguez, Mohamed Saer sene, Marcus Vinicius.

Best Projections: Nailing Farmar and Lowry's numbers were nice but a bit of a fluke. The more minutes and numbers a guy puts up, the harder it is to equal the actual stats. For that reason, the projections of Marcus Williams (off by barely a rebound a game), Randy Foye, and Adam Morrison above are better indications of my success. Overall, with the few exceptions noted below, I had everybody in the range that they finished.. and putting guys in the right band is ultimately what I'm trying to achieve.

Worst Projections: The worst projection was Sacramento's Quincy Douby. He only had 4 units of production (pts, rbs, asts) as compared to my lofty 13 total. JJ Redick was another big underperformer. I projected 11,3,2 but he only put up 6,1,1.. basically half of expected production. Forwards Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons also did worse than expected. Armstrong was projected at 12 units but only had 7, while Simmons was projected at 12 but only had 6. Andrea Bargnani and Brandon Roy surpassed my expectations, especially in terms of scoring average. Bargnani averaged an impressive 12 ppg last year compared to 7 ppf projection. Roy popped in 17 a game, compared to my 12.

Check back in a few days for the 2007 statistical projections.
