Wednesday's loss at the hands of Villanova has to make you wonder about the direction in which Fred Hill's program is headed and not because of the result. The Wildcats aren't going to lose many this season, but to go down in the fashion that the Scarlet Knights did was embarrassing. In regards to who played hard throughout, who else can you point out besides Hamady Ndiaye and Dane Miller? Jonathan Mitchell? Before getting into the importance of Rutgers moving forward it's important to revisit Wednesday's happenings in order to determine the ultimate destination.

The MAAC slate offers up a split schedule before the weekend, with two games tonight and three more on Friday. Siena hosts a shorthanded Loyola squad and Fairfield visits Marist in tonight's games, but one of the better matchups could be the one that's being televised by ESPNU on Friday night. Iona, winners of four straight and nine of their last eleven, take on Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium with tip time set for 9 PM.

UNLV: Love/NeedMore

January 21st, 2010
We are half way through the season and the Rebs are 15-4. I want to tell you what I love and I need a little more of from each of the Rebels' impact players: Let me know what you love or think needs some work from our favorite team.

It's "Rematch Week" in the NEC with games being returns of last weeks' matchups. The game of interest tonight is Saint Francis (PA) visiting Monmouth, who will be without the services of leading scorer Travis Taylor. Taylor, who shared Choice Hotels Player of the Week honors with Quinnipiac's James Feldeine, is suspended for the next seven games for a violation of team rules. The good news (if there is any when you lose your leading scorer) is that the Hawks play their first two without Travis at home, where they're 3-0 in NEC games this season.

League favorite Siena established further separation between itself and the rest of the Metro Atlantic with their win at Fairfield on Saturday, opening a gap of two games between themselves and the Stags. But for the solid play of teams such as Fairfield, Iona and Saint Peter's, the bigger story may be the struggles endured by preseason contenders Niagara and Rider. What's up with these two?

Saturday's games offered little in the way of clarity when it comes to who should be considered the favorite to win the Northeast Conference, instead jumbling the picture from top to (almost) bottom. Long Island showed up at Mount St. Mary's undefeated in league play and left with an 86-67 loss, dropping them into a tie for first place with Robert Morris.

UNLV: Stepping Backward

January 17th, 2010
UNLV came off the success of two conference marquee wins at UNM and at home vs. SDSU. However, the momentum of those wins was not enough for a Rebel team aching to find consistency in every aspect of their play.

Michigan Upsets #15 Connecticut 68-63

January 17th, 2010
Michigan has struggled living up to the expectations so far this season, losing pretty much all meaningful non-conference games so far. I’m sure the Wolverines had this one circled on their schedule as a “must win”. It was their last chance at a quality out of conference win. The Wolverines delivered and outplayed U-Conn nearly the entire way winning 68-63. Michigan was able to get U-Conn to play the Wolverines style of play, a half court slowed down pace.

Lucas Leads Michigan State To Win Over Illinois

January 16th, 2010
Michigan State prevailed against Illinois 73-63 to remain undefeated in Big Ten Conference play. This was Illinois’ first conference defeat. The Spartans showed flashes of greatness today, but still haven’t played their best basketball. That’s not good news for Big Ten foes. Illinois had a rather soft Big Ten schedule to this point, but that changed with their visit to East Lansing. Illinois battled hard and didn’t give up even when they trailed by 23 points in the 2nd half. In the end, Michigan State was just too much for the Illini to handle.

Georgia Lets Lead Slip Away Against Mississippi State

January 16th, 2010
I was really impressed with Georgia for about the first 35 minutes of the game. They had a game plan and executed it very good. I had to check their record twice because they didn’t look like a .500 ball club. Then the last 5 minutes of the game came. I saw why they’ve lost as many games as they’ve won this year. Mississippi State turned up the pressure on defense and put on the full court press. Georgia lost their composure and looked like a middle school basketball team trying to break the press. Mississippi State erased a 13 point deficit and held on to a 3 point advantage (their largest lead of the game) for the win.
