The Runnin' Rebs overcame a 13 point deficit against Nevada, Reno in the second half to eventually take over the game by 13 points in the end. With star starter Tre'Von Willis in foul trouble only 2 minutes into the game, Lon Kruger was encouraged to use his reserves early on. The first half did not look pretty. However, the Rebel reserves fought back in the middle of the second to propel the UNLV record to 2-0.
Last night's performances by Steve Jones, Anthony Marshall, Justin Hawkins, and Kendall Wallace prove that the UNLV bench runs deep, and well. Jones and Wallace both had important three point shots in critical low moments of the game. While freshmen Marshall and Hawkins continue to garnish attention for their poise as shooting guards. 11 Rebels posted points in the box score last night; an amazing and telling accomplishment of the Rebels' depth.
Oscar Bellfield led the pack with a decisive shooting performance. Other UNLV starters Willis, Derick Jasper, and Chace Stanback contributed in various ways throughout the game, but the most noticeable performances and impact came from the bench. Lon Kruger sounded impressed with his reserve activity and the reserves also seem very content in their roles as "sparks" whether UNLV is struggling or just needs a little extra boost.
One thing is certain, without the assistance of a well prepared bench last night, UNLV would have lost their struggle against UNR. Luke Babbit, UNR's well tested sophomore and the rest of his teammates, gave UNLV everything they had. However, without a UNR bench to back up Babbit and the rest, the Wolfpack was completely disadvantaged.
UNLV goes to 2-0 and faces Southern Illinois in the MWC-MVC showdown on Saturday. A win Saturday could propel the Rebs' national attention and prepare them for next Saturday's decisive match-up vs. Louisville.
Good win for UNLV
I'm looking forward to the Louisville matchup a week from Saturday; the Rebels' depth could be the difference provided they take care of the ball against the Cardinals' pressure.
