World Vision Classic Preview

November 27th, 2009
World Vision Classic starts tonight. This round robin tournament includes Monmouth, Pepperdine, Hampton and the host Wyoming.

The Hawks make the long trip out to Wyoming to participate in the World Vision Classic. It looks as if some major players might not be playing. MU's super quick guard Will Campbell (12.3 ppg)is sufferring from flu symptoms and his status is uncertain, but looks as if he won't play and Wyoming's star forward Afam Mujouke(20.8 ppg) reinjured his troubled left knee last game and his status is uncertain as well. These injuries leave gaping holes for arguably the two best teams in this tournament. Assuming both don't play here is my outlook on all of the teams:
Wyoming:
2-2: Good win: over Boise St.87-61.
Key injury: Mujouke 20.8 ppg
Key players: F: Thiam 13ppg 5 rpgG: Davis 12ppg C: Waddell 11ppg
X-Factor: With Majouke out, Wyoming could use more production from key transfers 7-2 mammoth Sylla or diminuitive guard Jaydee Luster.
Pepperdine:
1-3
Key players: G: Keion Bell 21.3 ppg 6.5 rpg 3.8 apg G: Suttle 8ppg Forwards: Darby and Thompson, both averaging 7 ppg.
X-Factor: This team lives and dies with Bell. The team is not very talented, has turnover issues and is young. However, Bell may be the best player in this tourney field. If he can go off for 30+ points and find two players who can offer double digits behind him, Pepperdine could be dangerous.
Hampton:
0-4
Key players: G/F: Pellum: 14.5 ppg 5 rpg G: Simpson: 11.8 ppgF-Freeman 10 ppg F- Funches 6.8 rpg
X-Factor: Big stop or big shot. Hampton has been in it's last three games but hasn't executed down the stretch. They need a leader to step up and hit these big shots, with Simpson the senior as the likely candidate.
Monmouth
1-3
Big Win: 99-70 over FIU
Key loss: G- Will Campbell (12.3 ppg), flu
Key Players: F Travis Taylor 17.3 ppg 7rpg, F Ed Waite 10ppg 6rpg, G Justin Sofman 8.8 ppg
X-Factor: MU needs some added production from guards Whitney Coleman and James Hett. With Campbell out, these two upperclassmen need to be leaders with Hett offerring some scoring punch as in his 13 pt performance last time out against Lehigh and Coleman who is coming off of knee surgery needs to be a scoring compliment on the wing like he was back in 2007-08 when he averaged over 11 ppg.
Prediction (based on no Majouke or Campbell for the whole tourney):
1. Wyoming 2-1 (wins over MU, Hampton, loss to Pepperdine)
2. Monmouth 2-1 (wins over Pepperdine, Hampton, loss to Wyoming)
3. Pepperdine 2-1 (wins over Wyoming, Hampton, loss to MU)
4. Hampton 0-3 (3 losses)
All Tournament Team:
F-Travis Taylor
F- Thiam
G- Keion Bell
G- Pellum
One of the following: G-Davis, C-Waddell, G-Simpson, G-Sofman, F-Waite

MVP: If all 3 top teams go 2-1 I would say either Travis Taylor or Keion Bell.
