VT Escapes in OT: Box score of the Day

Today's pick is.. Virginia Tech's OT win over NC State.

When breaking down a team's resume, people tend to focus on the few best wins, such as the Hokies 78-71 win over Wake Forest. But sometimes hard fought victories over mediocre opponents can be just as important. Having lost two games in a row, and trailing by 18 with 13 minutes left.. Virginia Tech made a furious come back to salvage a win over lowly NC State, and remain firmly in the thick of the NCAA Tournament race.

While Dorenzo Hudson started the comeback with a big three, it was the Hokie's usual three-headed monster that completed the deal. AD Vassallo, Jeff Allen, and Malcolm Delaney combined for 63 points, and hit the big shots that pushed the game to OT.

NC State was led by Ben McCauley, who had a monster game of 25 & 15. This was the most points McCauley has scored since January of 2007 (when he had 26).  The Wolfpack shot relatively well from the floor, got to the line frequently, and held their own on the glass.. but were killed by turnovers. A lack of point guard leadership has plagued this team all season, and no one on the roster even averaged 3 assists per game.
