Wake 92 - UNC 89: Box Score of the Day
CHN now features a live scoreboard, stats, standings, etc.. here. Occasionally, we'll be featuring a box score of the day, with some commentary on why the box score is interesting. It might be involve a huge upset, a big personal effort, some odd statistical occurrences, or other intriguing tidbit.
Box Score of the Day:
Today's pick is.. Wake Forest's 92-89 Win over UNC.
This was a rare game that actually lived up to the hype. Its unfortunate the game wasn't on network TV or ESPN considering it was the season's premier matchup thus far. Who chose the games CBS has been televising by the way.. Wisconsin at Purdue? Really? Anyways, this game featured three stars.. and none of UNC's "big three" made the list: Jeff Teague and Chas McFarland led the way for Wake, and Danny Green did what he could to keep Carolina in the game.
The real breakout player was Jeff Teague, who is on the verge of entering college basketball's tiny pantheon of nationally known names (Hansbrough, Curry, Griffin). Not only did Teague score 34 points, haul in 6 boards, and dish out 4 assists.. but he brings a calming presence to an otherwise frenetic team. He reminds me of a smaller version of Portland Blazers star Brandon Roy. Seemingly always in control, calm, and collected.. but able to enforce his will with well calculated and effective moves.
Check out UNCs fg% below.. 35.1.. it's amazing they were even able to stay in the game considering that putrid number. 17 offensive rebounds compared to just 8 for Wake is the reason they almost were able to overcome the poor shooting.
